say, didja know that under Jim Riggleman, Willie Bloomquist has finally gotten consistent playing time for the first time in his career?

must be true, ’cause it was on the radio.

I sense a slow comment thread ahead.

After an extended vacation… and on Felix Day no less! Tough times in Marinerville.

  4. MattThompson on July 18th, 2008 6:49 pm

Felix Night notwithstanding, it is a beautiful Friday night, which usually bodes ill for plentiful game threads.

  5. BurkeForPres on July 18th, 2008 6:53 pm

Interesting lineup today. Something we haven’t really seen all year.

I noticed that on the Mariner’s website, they have taken down the standings as one of the features that loads on startup. They have replaced it with the Mariners leaders in batting and pitching statistics. I laughed when I saw that.

  6. Sports on a Schtick on July 18th, 2008 6:55 pm

And I guess with the new Batman movie and all…

But really, shouldn’t this team give Clement all the ABs it can at this point? sadfkl;dshnfi;dslhfb

  7. msb on July 18th, 2008 6:57 pm

Baker blogs about Bedard & reduced time for Vidro & Burke.

Of course, there they are, both are in tonight …

  8. DMZ on July 18th, 2008 6:57 pm

    Mariners’

  9. HamNasty on July 18th, 2008 7:02 pm

Yay Felix… Boo everyone else! This game is in serious need of rum and cokes.

  10. Tom in Edmonds on July 18th, 2008 7:04 pm

    No Vidro?

Gameday has Cairo at 1st as does Baker???

    Guess we’ll soon know.

  11. Slippery Elmer on July 18th, 2008 7:04 pm

They did not just show the Market with guys throwing fish! What is this, every Seahawks game?!

  12. jlc on July 18th, 2008 7:06 pm

When did Rizzs lose the satanic goatee? I liked him better that way. Enjoy your vacation, but come back, Dave N.

  13. galaxieboi on July 18th, 2008 7:09 pm

    The lineup isn’t horrible…*sigh*

Wow, Aaron Laffey has more than a run difference between his ERA and his FIP. Perhaps his luck runs out tonight…or something.

  14. galaxieboi on July 18th, 2008 7:10 pm

Wow!!! An edit link with a ‘this will self-destruct’ timer. Kewl, nice work guys.

  15. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 18th, 2008 7:13 pm

Batman was freakin’ awesome, by the way.

And we also saw a preview for Watchmen!

  16. msb on July 18th, 2008 7:15 pm

I think the Evil Rizzs goatee is an off-season/ST thing.

say! I hear Grady Sizemore is from the area!

  17. jlc on July 18th, 2008 7:15 pm

With Bedard out, Burke may not get much more playing time. Be nice to see him do something special tonight.

  18. Slippery Elmer on July 18th, 2008 7:16 pm

    Nice start for Felix.

  19. jlc on July 18th, 2008 7:18 pm

Batman! I’m so jealous. I took the grandkids to Kit Kittredge yesterday. Though we did see the Incredible Hulk last week. William Hurt was never Spicoli, but he was enough on the goofy side that seeing him as a rah rah general was weird. Maybe not as weird as Edward Norton as a mild-mannered scientist, though.

  20. Dave on July 18th, 2008 7:19 pm

This Cleveland line-up stinks – look for Felix to dominate tonight.

  21. galaxieboi on July 18th, 2008 7:19 pm

I <3 fangraphs, really. Felix is hardly throwing his slider at all anymore. Elbow issue? Or, since they’re upping his innings is the team being more cautious with the slider? It appears Mel is a believer in the ‘establish the fastball’ mantra too. Felix’s groundball rate is also way down.

  22. HamNasty on July 18th, 2008 7:20 pm

1K 2 weak ground balls, glorious!

  23. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 18th, 2008 7:20 pm

    19… Norton seemed… mis-cast.

Aaron Eckhart was excellent; I’ve become a fan of his after seeing “Thank You For Smoking.”

  24. Mr. Egaas on July 18th, 2008 7:21 pm

This lineup is so freakin’ awesome.

  25. galaxieboi on July 18th, 2008 7:21 pm

say! I hear Grady Sizemore is from the area!

    You don’t say?! Everett perhaps?

  26. galaxieboi on July 18th, 2008 7:23 pm

This Cleveland line-up stinks – look for Felix to dominate tonight.

    Dave, wtf happened to them?

  27. edgar for mayor on July 18th, 2008 7:23 pm

Another day another stupid line-up with 4/9 players not worth watching. Mariners are lucky Batman sold out and i have nothing else to do for the evening.

  28. galaxieboi on July 18th, 2008 7:23 pm

    Woohoo! M’s @ 58% WE!!

  29. edgar for mayor on July 18th, 2008 7:24 pm

So anyways…Willie needs to stopp getting hits. A long 0 for 30 might be enought to get him out of the line-up.

  30. Dave on July 18th, 2008 7:25 pm

Wow – Peralta has no range. Every SS on the planet makes that play.

  31. joser on July 18th, 2008 7:25 pm

Edward Norton will always be, first and foremost for me, the neonazi from “American History X.” Since the Hulk is kind of the ultimate Nietzschean Übermensch, it’s not much of a stretch. The mild-mannered part, maybe, but we all know Banner was just a fig leaf and Hulk was the real deal.

  32. MedicineHat on July 18th, 2008 7:26 pm

Batman….pfft. I’m going to see Space Chimps tonight…lol

  33. galaxieboi on July 18th, 2008 7:27 pm

Is Peralta mis-cast as a SS?

  34. joser on July 18th, 2008 7:28 pm

Yeah, kind of lost in the “disappointment” of an M’s season “unexpectedly” falling well short of the play-offs is the question of WTF happened to the Indians. They went deep last year. They were supposed to be the class of that division. They have geniuses in the front office. So what happened?

  35. DMZ on July 18th, 2008 7:28 pm

Why would 0-30 keep Bloomquist out of the lineup when 0-season can’t keep Vidro out?

  36. msb on July 18th, 2008 7:31 pm

so, Laffey, is what 12? Howsabout we get some runs here for Felix, eh? It is Felix Day, after all.

me, I just re-watched “Born to kill”– it may be 60 years old, but it is still damned weird.

  37. edgar for mayor on July 18th, 2008 7:32 pm

Why would 0-30 keep Bloomquist out of the lineup when 0-season can’t keep Vidro out?

You’re right I am being reasonable. Slap me next time, I should know better.

  38. tgf on July 18th, 2008 7:33 pm

DMZ, You forgot to modify Cairo’s handedness to “nil” in the lineup.

  39. HamNasty on July 18th, 2008 7:35 pm

  42. BillyJive on July 18th, 2008 7:37 pm

Why would you want anybody on this team to go 0 for 30? Gawd aren’t we awful enough?
Anyone know if Richie is playing for the Yanks tonight?

  43. Phightin Phils on July 18th, 2008 7:37 pm

Oh no. Please no. Felix is doing that stretching thing with this back, and winced a bit after that walk.

  44. edgar for mayor on July 18th, 2008 7:38 pm

    Yuni shines at short…

Well…after Dan Uggla in the ASG, Yuni looks fine ;)

  45. HamNasty on July 18th, 2008 7:38 pm

    BillyJive- 1-3 Rbi single.

  46. Paul B on July 18th, 2008 7:40 pm

I don’t expect many runs in this game.

We know the M’s can’t have a big inning with 4 replacement level or worse hitters in the lineup to stop any rallies.

And the Indians aren’t going to score much off of Felix.

  47. BillyJive on July 18th, 2008 7:40 pm

    So he’s still a singles machine…

  48. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 18th, 2008 7:43 pm

So we have three and a half more years of both Johjima and Silva, right?

  49. JerBear on July 18th, 2008 7:43 pm

Ahh…I missed Felix. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with his back. I wouldn’t worry about his back, I think that was just a “stretching face.”

Speaking of old-tv-to-new-movies, I thought the new Get Smart was pretty good. Anything with Carell has potential to be hilarious…

  50. msb on July 18th, 2008 7:45 pm

watching Burke hand the ball that smacked the dirt to the ump reminds me, there is a great section in Feinstein’s Living on the black about scuffed balls.

“Older pitchers like Glavine and Mussina are constantly amazed when they see young pitchers get a ball back after a grounder to an infielder and throw it in to an umpire asking for a new ball because it has been scuffed by the infield dirt.

“Boggles my mind when I see that”, Mussina said. “You treat a scuffed ball like gold and hang onto it for as long as you can.”"

  51. praetore on July 18th, 2008 7:45 pm

AHHH why do we still have burke, there is no reason for three catchers

  52. edgar for mayor on July 18th, 2008 7:45 pm

I am really bored with the offensive side of our team. I really don’t know if I watch this game if Felix isn’t pitching.

  53. BillyJive on July 18th, 2008 7:45 pm

Man, that Burke kid can hit…he can catch, he can pitch…He must be our most valuable trading chip…

  54. Tom in Edmonds on July 18th, 2008 7:47 pm

    So kewl. Thanks USSM!

  74. vitalogist on July 18th, 2008 8:00 pm

    Any Sirius Satellite listeners here?

So Scott Ferrall had Jeff Nelson on his show just now, and lets just say he wasn’t the best interview in the whole world, being of straightforward, non-confrontational nature… anyway- I called in to agree that Nellie is a tool (his show sucks), and I was gonna rip Softy from KJR (honestly guys, that’s an unlistenable show…), whom Scottie flamed as well…. so I’m on hold as Rauuuuuuuul hits his blast. They were just talking about the M’s and went to me at the perfect time, I busted out “Get out your rye bread and mustard, it’s Grand Salami Time!” Thats as close to being a play by play guy as I’ll ever get… I was happy anyway! :)

  80. Paul B on July 18th, 2008 8:10 pm

So who is on the radio tonight? Although Rick’s story about Phelps singing the National Anthem was interesting.

OK, I said the M’s wouldn’t have a big inning. In my defense, it took a single by Burke, an error by the shortstop, and a two out, bases loaded, four pitch walk to Willie Boom Boom. Oh, and a HBP to Betancourt.

  81. msb on July 18th, 2008 8:12 pm

that didn’t ‘get away from the catcher’– it pretty much never got to the catcher.

  82. pumpkinhead on July 18th, 2008 8:13 pm

  83. jlc on July 18th, 2008 8:14 pm

joser, I pretty much agree with American History X, except for me there’s always that creepy grin from Primal Fear.

  84. Phightin Phils on July 18th, 2008 8:15 pm

Did Yuni try to swing at the wild pitch, while warming up?

  85. joser on July 18th, 2008 8:16 pm

Sims is on the radio. I got out of the shower in time to hear “And the bases are loaded for Willie Bloomquist” and my eyes rolled so far I had trouble grabbing the towel.

Sims’ “Grand Slam” call needs work. Then again, how often has he had to use it?

Fun fact: Felix now has 50% of the grand slams hit by M’s this year. And that BB by Bloomquist represents ~14% of all his RBIs this year.

  86. msb on July 18th, 2008 8:19 pm

So who is on the radio tonight?

huh. it appears to be Sims, solo.

Typical managerial garbage. LaHair is called up, but Cairo plays, and somehow Clement doesnt end up in the lineup either. Great.

Laffey is a lefty. According to Mike Curto, the Mariners are still waiting for LeHair to hit a left-hander.

They had to pitch to Jose, cause if they walked him… VIDRO. Just sayin’.

  95. Paul B on July 18th, 2008 8:33 pm

Actually, even Cairo is a more threatening hitter than Vidro.

So either there is no protection effect (duh), or Cairo is really scary.

and yet the pi printed an article last week how the m’s were going to lose money this year and may have to make a cash call on owners for next season. I’m supposed to have sympathy for the guys that were netting over 20 mill a year for the past decade? And the pi has the nerve to publish this as bad news? We’re just being set up for the under 80 mill payroll next year.

Oh. KEWL. I’ve spelled it that way for as long as I can remember. Like I spell grrrl. Things like that.

Hmmm. Pretty slow game thread, with Felix day and all. On the other hand, it was also Dark Knight Day, which was an amazing movie. Ledger friggin’ owned The Joker.

Oh yeah, and the Watchmen trailer was pretty awesome. When it came on I raised my fist and cheered, and I was probably the only one in the theater who even heard about the comic, much less read it.

I’m actually good with that. This year’s payroll includes two highly paid players who are worth having (Ichiro and Beltre), some reasonably priced guys under club control and more dead weight than the Titanic. If the $80 million doesn’t include Vidro, Cairo, Washburn, Batista, Johjima and Yuni, there’s a chance it would be a far better team than this year.

Hey, wait, if Vidro was protecting Ibanez, what happens now?

    The Power of Beltre, bubba.

We’re just being set up for the under 80 mill payroll next year.

Just getting rid of Sexson has got them more than a third of the way there already. Subtract the stupid money they have sunk in Silva, Vidro, and Washburn ($25.35M) they’d be in the $77M range already. Unfortunately they’re on the hook for even more stupid money in Silva ($11M), Washburn ($10.35M), and Johjima ($8M) for next year.

And that’s the real problem. Heaven forbid the M’s were an $80M payroll team like the Brewers; I mean, just look at their respective records — clearly, having less than $117M is certain doom and $117M is guaranteed success, especially in a non-competitive division like the NL Central. Last I checked, the M’s were looking up, way up, at the Rangers ($68M) and Oakland ($48M). (Let’s not even mention Florida –$20M– or Tampa Bay –$43M). No, it’s clear you can have a winning team with an $80M payroll. But the real problem for the M’s is all those contracts Bavasi has wound around their necks, so that now they need more than $80M just to make up for the deadweight they’re already paying for. This is a hole the next GM will spend years digging the team out of, and more money will just allow him (or her) to do that faster.
