Like many other out-of-work, old school general managers, Bavasi finds himself as a special assistant in a different franchise. Good luck in Cincinnati, Bill.

Bill has some really valuable skills. Unfortunately, they simply weren’t the skills that were going to make him a top GM in today’s game.
But he was a great guy, and he can be an asset to a team that uses him well. I wish him the best.
So…Fontaine out of here then?
One hopes he’s in Jocketty’s office right now telling him about Washburn’s new pitch.

It’s always been presumed likely because Fontaine and Bavasi have ties that go back to the Angels (if not before, I’m not sure). I suppose other considerations include what other offers Fontaine gets – somebody is sure to want him, of course – and who the new GM is. To that end, Geoff Baker pointed out a little while ago that he’s “close” to Tony LaCava, whose name keeps getting mentioned. They also worked together with the Angels.
Graham is one of the moderators. We occasionally chip in when the authors aren’t available.
I wonder who we can now trade to the Reds for their top prospects.
I think a Silva trade is in order! He did so much better in the midwest.
Oh. I’m sorry, Graham, I never noticed you, which is I suppose the hallmark of a good moderator!
Who’s the Reds scouting director now? Hmm, Chris Buckley, fairly new in the position, well thought of. I don’t think Special Assistants get to bring in a raft of their own people. Bavasi’s not the boss of anything anymore. And I don’t think Fontaine is looking to take a demotion if he doesn’t have to, either.

Boggles the mind. In what way could he be of any use? Any talent related choice he made was disasterous. Only way he could be of use, Is to use him as a sounding board of what not to do…
Glad the Bill found work! He is a nice guy and all that. . .but at least he can’t run the Reds franchise downhill–it is one of the few around that is lower than the M’s.

Headline on ESPN – “Reds tap ex-Angels GM Bavasi as special assistant”. Hmm… looks like Bill isn’t including his tenure in Seattle on his current resume. Wonder why that might be?
