Game 120, Mariners at Angels

DMZ · August 13, 2008 at 6:05 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

King Felix v Santana. 7:05.

Here’s how ancient I am: Growing up, I used to like MTV’s 120 Minutes but we didn’t (and couldn’t) get cable in my bit of unincorporated King County, so I used to bug friends in other states to mail me video tapes. If you grew up here with me, listening to the big Puget Sound radio stations, you must understand.

Today marks an unimportant milestone: Riggleman has now managed as many games as McLaren lost before being fired.

McLaren: 25-47, .347
Riggleman: 20-27, .426

So we’re .378 since Hargrove left.

    That’s pretty crappy.

  2. Mike Snow on August 13th, 2008 6:27 pm

No, we’re .378 this year. We’re .433 since Hargrove left. McLaren’s overall winning percentage with the Mariners is actually slightly better than Riggleman’s.

    You misspelled “young”.

Well, I was looking forward to watching this game, but my wife’s water just broke…so it’s off to the hospital!!!

    Have fun without me!

lame excuse. They do have tv’s in the rooms now. That said, congrats and good luck.

That’s gotta be good karma for JerBear’s unborn child…coming into the world on King Felix Day.

  7. Tek Jansen on August 13th, 2008 6:37 pm

Prior to the internet, 120 minutes was one of the few ways to hear new music. (I grew up in Wenatchee, so, yes, I understand.) I would record it on Sunday nights and watch it during the week. It was cool.

  8. daveblev on August 13th, 2008 6:38 pm

wow, i’d never thought i’d see 120 Minutes mentioned on this site…i loved that show..Dave Kendall, Lewis Largent, Matt Pinfield, etc. I have the 1994 episode of 120 Minutes that the Beastie Boys hosted on a vhs tape.

He’ll be exciting at first, but turn out to be kind of a disappointment.

on my way to the game. God help me. Felix better bring his A game

  11. Colm on August 13th, 2008 6:54 pm

You think you had it rough!
Growing up in’t Northern Ireland we didn’t get Channel Four until I was 17. I missed the first four seasons of The Tube. I’m still pissed off.

    J Reed bringing the hustle!

  13. CaptainPoopy on August 13th, 2008 7:15 pm

God, I hate it when Beltre is selfish and gets an RBI with two out.

  14. MG8222 on August 13th, 2008 7:23 pm

Vlad swung the bat like a golf club but somehow gets a hit..wow…and now the bases are loaded with 1 out for Garret Anderson….but Felix gets a huge double play ball..But, game is tied now 1-1

4 – We had a good laugh at work because of how you let us know before you left! Good luck!

Is the Strasburg starting for the US Olympic team (live right now free stream http://www.nbcolympics.com/baseball/index.html) the same Strasburg often mentioned here.

He just fanned the side in the first inning.

    Yes. And good.

  20. msb on August 13th, 2008 7:53 pm

I contemplated making a drinking game out of Rizzs saying “they do the little things” but I can’t afford to get snockered by the 3rd inning

  21. MattThompson on August 13th, 2008 8:00 pm

I’m watching the USA game, too. It’s so nice to watch a game without commentary, and just be able to hear the players’ chatter.

  22. Jim_H on August 13th, 2008 8:01 pm

Strasburg strikes out 5 in the first two innings.

  23. Non Hippo on August 13th, 2008 8:06 pm

You even get to hear an American heckler.

  24. Sinking Away on August 13th, 2008 8:11 pm

The man can hit, the man can pitch, the man can catch. The man, King Felix.

  25. MattThompson on August 13th, 2008 8:14 pm

NOOOOO! Olympic baseball has stupid mascots, too! This thing makes the Moose look cool.

Oh, and Felix? Please don’t scare me like that again.

  26. Broadcast James on August 13th, 2008 8:15 pm

Strasberg (sp?) is pitching on nbcolympics.com (live video, no play by play) right now….

In case you wanted to get a look at the potential M’s #1 pick….

  27. DarkKnight1680 on August 13th, 2008 8:20 pm

OK, the Clement-as-catcher thing has to end now.

And for #26, no way the Nationals don’t end with the #1 pick…they’re beyond awful. Only hope is they decide they can’t sign him.

  28. Jim_H on August 13th, 2008 8:24 pm

Or the decide to draft offense/defense. :D

Rauuuuuuul! Might be the last time this year.

  30. naviomelo on August 13th, 2008 8:26 pm

    Raul!!!

  31. juneau_fan on August 13th, 2008 8:27 pm

I know it’s all about results, but Raul has to have the ugliest swing in baseball. Looks like he’s trying to break his back, and then that weird, churning run….but I’ll miss you, bud, if you’re hitting the road.

  32. MattThompson on August 13th, 2008 8:30 pm

Man, the Chinese are thorough. For a country that doesn’t know baseball, they got all the in-stadium sound effects nailed. They’ve got the house-organ ‘Charge’ theme, the hand-clap cadences, “We Will Rock You” at appropriate times, and even, for foul balls that leave the stadium, a shattering glass sound effect. Sounds just like a minor league game, but then every few minutes you get the stadium announcements in Mandarin. I wonder if they do dizzy-bat races for the seventh-inning stretch?

    Yeah Raul!

  33. juneau_fan on August 13th, 2008 8:32 pm

On one of the NBC filler shows, they mentioned that China imported the clay for the infield and the grass seed from the US. Guess they threw an organ and the sound effects board too?

  34. MattThompson on August 13th, 2008 8:37 pm

Yeah. Now they’ve got Bon Jovi going between innings.

It took me a while to notice this, because all that is such a part of the sounds of baseball here in the US, but then it struck me as really out of place at the Olympics. I mean, do they do the NBA stadium-sound stuff at basketball games? But I’m really into it, now.

    Edit: Hey, it’s Eugene Kingsale!

  35. metz123 on August 13th, 2008 8:55 pm

120 minutes was cool. I was so excited when 107.7 came on the air in the Puget sound area in 1991? Now I’m such an old fart I don’t even listen to it any more (but I love KEXP).

In fact I’m so old that when MTV came on the air we couldn’t get cable so I watched the horrible Friday Night Videos on ABC, late night Fridays to get my fix of those new fangled music videos.

I still don’t understand why they are kicking baseball out of the Olympics (softball I totally understand, it’s boring and the US is too dominant), baseball is global and competitive and fun to watch.

  36. MattThompson on August 13th, 2008 9:00 pm

Ha! I’m so old I knew right away FNV were on NBC. And I’m old enough that KJET (AM) was the coolest radio station in town all through my high-school days. Sad day when they went off the air.

  37. oac001 on August 13th, 2008 9:02 pm

i swear if i hear the stupid angels announcer mutter the words “mighty maicer” just one more time…

  38. cody on August 13th, 2008 9:02 pm

Oh god, they have a mercy rule in Olympic baseball.

Hey, the Dutch DH is 2-31 in the Olympics. The foriegn equivalent of Jose Vidro!

    C’ mon Raul! Jack one!

    Edit: Dang.

  39. metz123 on August 13th, 2008 9:08 pm

Oh yeah…it was the Saturday Night Live ripoff that was on ABC. It’s where Michael Richards first started…

  40. MattThompson on August 13th, 2008 9:18 pm

    Oh my. KJET lives.

Oh, and K-Rod time, too. Darn. US-Netherlands game getting boring, NED can’t do anything against Strasburg.

  41. msb on August 13th, 2008 9:21 pm

They’ve got the house-organ ‘Charge’ theme, the hand-clap cadences, “We Will Rock You” at appropriate times, and even, for foul balls that leave the stadium, a shattering glass sound effect.

    they also have Jim Lefebvre

  42. msb on August 13th, 2008 9:25 pm

I dunno. tomorrow we have Silva vs Liriano …

  43. msb on August 13th, 2008 9:29 pm

    and there goes “mighty maicer”

  44. G-Man on August 13th, 2008 9:29 pm

    Wow, two men on.

Hanging a blown save on K-Rod would be worth a half-d0zen wins in this sorry season.

  45. Sinking Away on August 13th, 2008 9:29 pm

Late game sacrafice situation for Ichiro. Come on gritty veteran. Ooops.

  46. G-Man on August 13th, 2008 9:32 pm

Somebody tell Cairo that Vlad has a cannon.

    JR!!!!!!!!!

  53. MattThompson on August 13th, 2008 9:35 pm

    they also have Jim Lefebvre

And, soon, an army of 1.3 billion Lefebvre Believers.

  54. msb on August 13th, 2008 9:36 pm

is this karma for last night’s cheap save?

oh, no, wait, it’s all the umpire’s fault …

  55. enazario on August 13th, 2008 9:36 pm

I just realized that K-Rod has more saves than Mariners have wins.

  56. Sinking Away on August 13th, 2008 9:36 pm

    Rauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuul Again!

  57. CC03 on August 13th, 2008 9:37 pm

Are Angels fans seriously booing? “Fans” I mean.

    That’s sort of pathetic.

  58. Jim_H on August 13th, 2008 9:37 pm

Can we pleeeeeeeeze keep Raul? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze ?

    Raul Ibanez: earning his u’s

  61. Carson on August 13th, 2008 9:40 pm

Green in line to get the Vulture!

  62. Slippery Elmer on August 13th, 2008 9:42 pm

Re keeping Ibanez — sure, if he accedes to being DH and/or 1B, I’m all for it.

  63. CC03 on August 13th, 2008 9:42 pm

    Draft picks sound better.

  64. msb on August 13th, 2008 9:43 pm

is that some exotic new French watch they award the winning pitcher?

  67. Carson on August 13th, 2008 9:45 pm

Yeah, yeah. I fixed the spelling (before you posted even).

  68. Jim_H on August 13th, 2008 9:45 pm

    ugh… Did JJ clear waivers?

  69. Sinking Away on August 13th, 2008 9:45 pm

    CRAP. Putz.

  70. PaulMolitorCocktail on August 13th, 2008 9:46 pm

    Well that sucked.

  71. Carson on August 13th, 2008 9:46 pm

Aaaaand, now it doesn’t matter how I spelled it.

  72. G-Man on August 13th, 2008 9:47 pm

Still, a blown save for KR. Did they finally say that was his first of the year, not his fifth?

  73. Carson on August 13th, 2008 9:47 pm

Look at the bright side, Ichiro might get to extend his hitting streak now.

  74. G-Man on August 13th, 2008 9:48 pm

At least they didn’t get good wood on anything against JJ ;)

  75. jordan on August 13th, 2008 9:48 pm

Too bad we didn’t have Vidro to get in some of that late rally action.

  76. MattThompson on August 13th, 2008 9:54 pm

Still, a blown save for KR. Did they finally say that was his first of the year, not his fifth?

    It’s his fifth.

  77. MattThompson on August 13th, 2008 9:58 pm

By the way, Strasburg tonight, vs the Netherlands:

7IP, 0R, 1H, 11K (hit came vs the next-to-last batter he faced). His breaking stuff is better than I thought it would be. Of course, he was facing the Netherlands. Most of their players were Dutch Antilles guys who haven’t seen the minors in years.

  78. Jim_H on August 13th, 2008 10:01 pm

    G-Man,

Not sure where you are getting your stats. That is definitely K-Rods 5th blown save this season.

  79. Mike Snow on August 13th, 2008 10:04 pm

    Ichiro gets another chance now.

  80. JoseMesa69 on August 13th, 2008 10:05 pm

“Joe’s Tracer” is ridiculously off. Maybe if everyone’s strike zone was the size of a container of Chinese food… How could our announcers not notice that by this point in the season?

  81. Mike Snow on August 13th, 2008 10:09 pm

Oh well, shoot for the fourteenth now.

  82. PaulMolitorCocktail on August 13th, 2008 10:15 pm

    Nacho cheese burger…

  83. Breadbaker on August 13th, 2008 10:15 pm

Roy Corcoran: one of those cheap assets that can make up part of an effective bullpen. Doesn’t need a “role”, just goes out and gets outs.

  84. Jim_H on August 13th, 2008 10:19 pm

    I’m gonna beg some more…

Can we pleeeeeeeze keep Raul? Pretty Pleazzzze?

  85. Sinking Away on August 13th, 2008 10:19 pm

One last time for Rauuuuuul. 4 in a row. We can’t have a better chance than that. Get him home. Just in spire me.

  86. enazario on August 13th, 2008 10:19 pm

Ibanez is fun to watch these days.

  87. MattThompson on August 13th, 2008 10:21 pm

    And Beltre sacrificing. Just gross.

  90. HamNasty on August 13th, 2008 10:25 pm

4 K’s and the biggest hit of his career. Nice Game Wlad.

  91. Breadbaker on August 13th, 2008 10:26 pm

Damn that Wlad, didn’t leave anyone on base for Cairo.

Update: Tanks for the runs, Mr. Balentien. Nice work! Thanks for the win!

  96. Sports on a Schtick on August 13th, 2008 10:33 pm

One of the finest wins of the year.

  97. JoseMesa69 on August 13th, 2008 10:37 pm

94 – The umpire got hit on the arm with the ball and a gourd-sized bunyon sprouted near his wrist, shortly followed by a Dave Valle erection (if you were listening, you know).

  98. msb on August 13th, 2008 10:42 pm

well, that was an unexpected outcome.

  99. Sports on a Schtick on August 13th, 2008 10:48 pm

The home plate umpire got hit with a foul ball near the end so there was a little delay.

Earlier Macier Izturis left after reinjuring his thumb. I think that was on Yuni’s single in the awesome ninth inning.

  100. msb on August 13th, 2008 10:58 pm

caller to the postgame is concerned that those young players from Tacoma are taking too many fast balls.
