    You’re predicting a win?

  2. coasty141 on September 20th, 2008 12:32 pm

So where are you on your load test? If 154 is the failing point I’m somewhere in the 110 region. I can take a lot more suffering. Losing and having a horrible front office is half the fun.

I really think we should throw all the remaining games so we get a higher draft pick. That said, even if we play our strongest healthy side, we may not have much of a say in the matter…

  6. Mike Snow on September 20th, 2008 1:12 pm

Actually, the key to Strasburg is that the Padres are playing the Nationals this weekend.

  7. Slurve on September 20th, 2008 1:15 pm

I hope we get 3rd round draft I want Grant Green the SS and the Padres will take Strasburg.

I have to say that if I was going to put money on how the M’s would break the streak, “LaHair homers, driving in Cairo” wouldn’t have been my choice.

  9. Mike Snow on September 20th, 2008 1:38 pm

    Another Betancourt double play.

  10. torx on September 20th, 2008 1:39 pm

I have to say that if I was going to put money on how the M’s would break the streak, “LaHair homers, driving in Cairo” wouldn’t have been my choice.

Niehaus called it in the pregame show. His “pick to click” was LaHair based on a nice swing late in the game last night.

However, in that same pregame show, Blowers said the key to winning close games was a veteran team. His reasoning: they know when to get hits, when to catch the ball (as opposed to young guy bobbling it in close situations), knowing what the manager wants them to do, and laying down bunts (especially to get that lead-off double to third).

  11. Pete on September 20th, 2008 1:56 pm

Blowers on veterans: “they know when to get hits, …”

Cairo whispers to Yuni: “Ok, see, right now is one of those times I was talking about. This isn’t the time for a hit. …I’ll let you know when.”

  12. Mike Snow on September 20th, 2008 2:00 pm

    Trade Betancourt!

That explains why the M’s were 20 games over .500 before they got rid of Sexson and Turbo.

I’m making a rare appearance here this last month, but am I the only one glad that Silva pitched poorly? the last thing we need is for this unbelievably bad front office to get a good start out of him.

  18. DMZ on September 20th, 2008 2:25 pm

I always hate to see the team get beat up. And it’s not as if they’re going to offer Silva an extension right now anyway.

  19. Slurve on September 20th, 2008 2:27 pm

We’re gonna have Silva for another 3 years you should hope he pitches well…

  20. Pete on September 20th, 2008 2:27 pm

    Silva…

Well, I guess it depends on your perspective. Somebody has got to eat the $36 million (or whatever it is) and three years remaining on his contract. If he doesn’t pitch well, we continue to lose his starts, …plus we can’t trade him.

…Actually, I can’t think of too many scenarios where it’s good for him to be pitching poorly.

    Try again.

  21. Pete on September 20th, 2008 2:28 pm

    Yep.

  22. abender20 on September 20th, 2008 2:29 pm

Well I guess it’s just you and me DMZ. I agree, as a fan it hurts to see them struggle, but I would like to see Silva out of the rotation if possible. Since you appear to have time, how off am I here?
    Next year
Felix – “Ace” or ACE!!!! of the staff, depending.
Morrow – Not unlike Felix this year, probably a little worse, but filthy with struggles.
Feierabend – relief. He is bad.
RRS – probably a long relief/spot start guy. worse than league average, but not too far below.
Bedard – Yankees or some other god forsaken hellhole.
Washburn – hopefully not a mariner.

I don’t see any guys in the minors ready to perform at the big league level, actually for offense either. Does this team win 65 games next year?

  23. Pete on September 20th, 2008 2:31 pm

Uh… I thought DMZ was disagreeing with your thought on Silva.

  24. abender20 on September 20th, 2008 2:32 pm

My opinion re: silva’s success bases around my belief that is not capable of being a good pitcher. Therefore I see any OK start he has as being flukey.

  25. DMZ on September 20th, 2008 2:34 pm

There’s no reason a good GM couldn’t put together an 80-win team next year. Okay, there is, and it’s Lincoln/Armstrong potentially.

Worst case, your staff runs Felix/Morrow/Washburn/RRS/Silva (Batista?) which isn’t great but it’s something, and you can upgrade that with some scrap-heap pickups. That’s not so bad at all.

I know this is probably all too obvious, but I’ve really been impressed with Morrow’s progress this year where I used to worry he’d end up cast in the setup and then closer roles, never throwing anything but fastballs. I have high hopes again.

  26. Pete on September 20th, 2008 2:36 pm

So basically, you want Silva to pitch poorly so the front office will realize he sucks, cut him, and eat his ginormous, impossible-to-trade salary?

    Guess I’m missing something.

  27. abender20 on September 20th, 2008 2:37 pm

I see your worst case of felix morrow wash rrs silva/batista as a real problem. The staff this year was put together with exactly the same, but replace Morrow with Bedard. Assuming morrow doesnt have a torn labrum, he’s still unlikely to dominate. Therefore you are still running out a questionable number two and poor 3-5.

  28. DMZ on September 20th, 2008 2:42 pm

Dave wrote a nice post on this a couple days ago.

  29. Slurve on September 20th, 2008 2:42 pm

Where do you get the assumption of Morrow won’t dominate?

  30. notanangrygradstudent on September 20th, 2008 2:47 pm

Silva will either pitch well enough to trade, or not. My fear is that if he does pitch that well for a stretch, this particular FO may become convinced that he can actually pitch and keep him. But I’d still rather he pitched well, because having choices to make is still better than not having them. I can second-guess the choices after they are made.

  31. DMZ on September 20th, 2008 2:49 pm

It’s going to take a lot of success for Silva to have any trade value right now. Unfortunately, yeah, the risk is that success would reinforces their belief that Silva was a top starter and quality FA and, like Washburn, they’d increase their asking price and be unable to move him.

  32. Slurve on September 20th, 2008 2:50 pm

What is wrong with RRS people? He walks too many guys but he is a solid BOR guy…

  33. Milendriel on September 20th, 2008 3:05 pm

To be fair, Derek, Dave’s post assumed we’d get 140 innings of Bedard. Since it’s looking likely to be more like 0 innings, it’s going to take a good move or two to get the staff to league average. Either way, though, the M’s have major work to do on the position player side of the equation, and I’m not sure they can pull it off in one offseason.

  34. notanangrygradstudent on September 20th, 2008 3:07 pm

Who said anything was wrong with RRS? He’s been performing well this season, and although conventional wisdom says he isn’t this good, he sure has been pitching well. I don’t think he should get $10 mil per, but he’s been plenty solid and a definite bright spot this year.

  35. DMZ on September 20th, 2008 3:14 pm

Sure, but with 140 innings of Bedard Dave had them as a league-average staff. If you assume that Bedard is done, and they have to get those 140 innings out of Silva/Batista or whoever’s walking by the stadium, that’s still a long ways from a team that can only win 65 games.

    Sorry if that wasn’t clearer.

  36. notanangrygradstudent on September 20th, 2008 3:39 pm

And we give up the go-ahead run….

    I hate the A’s.

  37. Mike Snow on September 20th, 2008 3:39 pm

Who remembers the disastrous 0-11 road trip we had a couple years ago? Looks like we’re headed for a repeat.

  38. DMZ on September 20th, 2008 3:46 pm

    This is so, so bad.

  39. Mike Snow on September 20th, 2008 3:49 pm

    Why?

  40. Mike Snow on September 20th, 2008 3:51 pm

They do learn “never make the first out at third base” in Tacoma, right? I mean, you have Ichiro coming up next.

  41. notanangrygradstudent on September 20th, 2008 3:52 pm

There is a Mariner play, for you. Safe by a mile according to N-i-e-h-a-u-s, but called out. What’s he doing stretching with the potential tying run, anyway? Shouldn’t even give the ump a chance to blow the call.

  42. Live4Night on September 20th, 2008 3:52 pm

That wasn’t even close to an out. One of the worst calls I have ever seen

    154…BOOOM!!!! 154…BOOM!!!

Hopefully that’s the sound of doors slamming behind Armstrong and Lincoln. Here’s to hoping it hits both of them, firmly, in the ass.
