No DePo

Dave · September 29, 2008 at 5:42 pm · Filed Under Mariners

For those of you hoping that the M’s would interview/hire Paul Depodesta for their next GM spot, you can cross him off the list – the note that I put at the end of the GM update about DePodesta agreeing to not pursue a GM job in exchange for the three year contract extension he received has been confirmed by a “clubhouse insider”. And yes, I just wanted to use that term.

So, DePo’s out. At least we can keep reading his blog, which is awesome.

His blog kicks butt and really reveals him as a thoughtful, engaging fellow.

Since he’s actually in management, shouldn’t that be “front office insider” instead?

    well, DePshaw.

    I dunno– maybe it is a really well-informed clubbie…

He answers readers’ questions on his blog? That’s frankly incredible. There aren’t too many people at his level in ANY business who do that, let alone baseball (which has a tendency to be both secretive and cliche-ridden). AND he’s smart, and intensely thoughtful.

I’m going to cry myself to sleep if I read any more of it.

So, does that mean DePo was

    a) not the least bit interested in the M’s job
    b) pretty sure the M’s weren’t the least bit interested in offering it to him.
    or
    c) convinced San Diego is a really, really nice place to live.

No DePo? That’s so MoFo! But seriously folks, was he the guy who was run out of L.A. or am I thinking of somebody else? If he’s as smart as he appears to be, why would he want to join one of the most backward-looking organizations in professional sports? (Sorry, but today I read NOT ONLY Thiel’s piece about the lack of leadership on the M’s this year but also a Sporting News piece on how Troy Percival was bringing leadership to the Rays. Never mind that one team has talent and the other doesn’t.)

He was run out of LA because Bill Plaschke didn’t like him. True story.

There is no way DePo will ever be welcomed into the Mariner organization….not with his forward thinking and all. Could his straight forward and insightful blogs be one of the things holding him back from another front office gig?
