what is interesting is the inability/unwillingness of a lot of the Kos folks to see that Dave’s readership is what is bringing him votes and solicitations– in their eyes he must be somehow campaigning for votes (unlike, oh, their preferred candidate?)

  2. purpledawg on November 17th, 2008 8:36 am

I kind of feel sorry for Justin Varner. Only 27 votes. Not sorry enough to vote for him, but still…

  3. Carson on November 17th, 2008 9:27 am

Now, are those stats for the whole site or just Dave? If it’s the later, I wish I had a second vote.

  4. Carson on November 17th, 2008 9:33 am

    @msb

Does this guy even blog for that Kos? Does he just share their views, so they’re giving him a boost? I’ve never been to that blog, so I’m just assuming based on what is said in those posts you showed.

    Has Dave hit up fangraphs?

  5. JLP on November 17th, 2008 9:55 am

Dave posted at Fangraphs about this a while ago.

  6. Broadcast James on November 17th, 2008 9:57 am

So where’s the 303 comments they don’t want us to see?? :)

I don’t get this “he’s campaigning for votes” thing. When it’s setup as a competition of who can get the most votes (with a pretty sizable reward), what is it, that you’re supposed to do? What’s wrong with mobilizing your base?

In four years, I’m going to run for President and accuse my opponents of campaigning.

  7. galaxieboi on November 17th, 2008 9:59 am

And Appelman posted this morning about it too.

  8. vj on November 17th, 2008 10:07 am

Check out his blog. I did and don’t feel sorry for him. There are some other blogs with very few votes in the competition that I’d consider more deserving of our sympathy.

  9. msb on November 17th, 2008 10:29 am

Mauro has been a contributor to dKos, and a number of people there have read his blog. This appears to have taken on a life of its own after he asked for their help with voting, though, to the point that the other “progressive” dKos contributor up for the scholarship has been ignored, presumably because he didn’t post diaries promoting his part in the competition.

  10. Jim Thomsen on November 17th, 2008 11:19 am

I’ve voted for Dave at home and at work. Maybe I could log on at FedEx/Kinko’s this afternoon ….

  11. Otto on November 17th, 2008 11:46 am

Have posted the link on several of the websites I frequent. Trying to get you back up on top Dave.

I know Dave’s wishes on the subject of poll flooding on his behalf, but at this point I’m pretty frustrated with having the moral high ground. Principle, apparently, isn’t going to get him a 10k scholarship.

  13. Dave on November 17th, 2008 11:58 am

    I’d rather have principles.

Seriously, I’m ready for this whole thing to be over. Can we get back to talking baseball now?

  14. Gregor on November 17th, 2008 12:11 pm

I hope that Dave somehow pulls this out. That said, if this whole discussion illustrates one thing, it is that awarding real-life money based on the outcome of open internet polls is a bad idea.

  15. zzyzx on November 17th, 2008 12:12 pm

Can we get back to talking baseball now?

Yeah, but unfortunately that involves talking about the Seattle Mariners which isn’t always the happiest conversation…

  16. naviomelo on November 17th, 2008 12:53 pm

The deficit is down to 533 votes…

  17. Typical Idiot Fan on November 17th, 2008 1:13 pm

    I’d rather have principles.

I know you would, but I’d rather you have a $10,000 scholarship. If anything, fighting against these poll flooding monkeys is a princple. Losing a fair and square contest is one thing, losing a contest like this sucks.

  18. Bach on November 17th, 2008 1:27 pm

I probably sound like an idiot saying this but I cannot figure out how to vote on that site. This is the second time I’ve tried and I’ve looked the site up and down.

  19. msb on November 17th, 2008 1:32 pm

sigh. Rubygal just doesn’t get it.

“Cameron? Did you see how he got the bloggers from all sorts of sports blogs to post for him and they have the nerve to complain about our modest effort here..!!! Truly, I was dumbfounded by one of the Cameron supporters who came in here and read us the riot act last night.. I don’t want to annoy people with these support diaries, but now I am ticked and I really want to see David Mauro win.”

as I understand it, if you or someone else haven’t already voted from the ISP, there is a place to click next to the name you choose. If the vote has already been made, it shows the vote total instead.

  21. msb on November 17th, 2008 1:42 pm

oh, and Dave has a thoughtful response to the whole mess up over at LL

  22. Bach on November 17th, 2008 1:42 pm

I’ve tried it on my computer and 2 of my co-workers and no luck. I will have to try from my home computer. I know none of these people have voted too.

  23. ooter on November 17th, 2008 1:45 pm

sigh. Rubygal just doesn’t get it.

It’s really frustrating to read what she types. Especially her political views. They are so far from reality it’s mind boggling. I really want to sit her down and explain both politics and life in general to her.

  24. IP on November 17th, 2008 2:06 pm

Me and several others tried to vote from work today and only one of us could. We all share the same public IP address at work so I suppose they must be logging IP addresses of voters. To make up for the lost votage I logged on to the servers at our provider (which all have different public IP addresses) and voted several times from there. Heh…

  25. Steve T on November 17th, 2008 2:22 pm

I have to say, I’ve checked out a few of the leading blogs, and some of them are pretty good — but David Mauro’s didn’t do a thing for me. Obviously I have no reason to care about local Texas politics, but it doesn’t even seem to be very well-written — and Mauro doesn’t even post that often. And they get hardly any comments — lots of zeroes, a few twos and fives. I don’t get it.

  26. msb on November 17th, 2008 2:34 pm

but he’s one of their own! he is! and Texas must be turned blue! (like THAT is ever going to happen)

  27. Evan on November 17th, 2008 2:42 pm

    RE: IP

Hey, all the computers in my office have different public IP addresses (so we can use VPN)…

    Grass roots! Grass roots!

I’m at the point where I’m ready to quote the movie Real Genius. We have to get even with them. It’s a moral obligation.

  29. ooter on November 17th, 2008 4:12 pm

Dave only 40 votes behind Mauro. Woo!

  30. naviomelo on November 17th, 2008 4:40 pm

Dave is up by 2 votes!!!!!!!!!

  31. WorldofWARPcraft on November 17th, 2008 4:40 pm

Dave C. is winning as of now! Lets keep it up!

  32. purpledawg on November 17th, 2008 4:53 pm

I bet I can vote for Dave again on my iPhone, connected on the Edge network. Everyone, grab your iPhone or Blackberry and vote again!

  33. Goob on November 17th, 2008 5:00 pm

I posted about voting a few hours ago on all of my sites – here’s to hoping you win this thing, Dave!

  34. Seattle-Kurt on November 17th, 2008 5:02 pm

    Ok…
Emailed co-workers, who in turn will email friends families.

Wife, who works at large NW company and is a member of a ton of Yahoo groups, emailed all with voting link.

Put out bulletins on all Myspace Seattle Mariner groups. Will hit Facebook tonight.

I figure, it’s based on online voting because they want to see how each blogger gets the word out to the masses. I don’t post here, but I read every word and sometimes, it’s all about getting out the vote!

  35. ooter on November 17th, 2008 5:28 pm

Hey I’ve been given fantasy football advice in exchange for votes for Dave on ESPN. Been working pretty well but now I’m getting swamped (which is good for votes but hard to keep up with). If anyone with a good amount of fantasy football knowledge wants to help out, it would be cool. Here’s the link. http://boards.espn.go.com/boards/mb/mb?sType=mbread&tid=3832646&tsn=6&st=1&sport=fanboard&id=ffl

  36. Benne on November 17th, 2008 6:09 pm

This thing has become a horse race. Go Dave!

  37. PLU Tim on November 17th, 2008 6:52 pm

A new diary for Mauro just went up on dKos. They are convinced that right-wing blogs are “freeping” the poll for Dave.

  38. Typical Idiot Fan on November 17th, 2008 7:13 pm

I gotta apologize to Dave and the others here at USSM. Earlier today I was pretty emotionally wrapped up in the idea that winning by any means was the way to go. Originally I wanted Dave to win because he deserved it but this whole damn thing as evolved into a personal desire to make the ones who’ve been slagging him cry like little babies.

Though I think revenge is a perfectly valid motivation to do something, but in this case it’s the worst motivation to do something. By proxy, Dave will be criticized for our actions; fair or unfair. This has delved too deeply into biased partisan moral outrage and while I can’t stop anybody else from doing it, I can stop myself and apologize for it.

SO that’s it. I’ve voted and will sit back and wait. Hopefully, the best person will win, come what may.

  39. PLU Tim on November 17th, 2008 7:17 pm

    TIF….

Please explain. Did you get the loons at the Free Republic, Red State, and NRO to start voting for Dave?

They have to be good for something other than comic relief.

  40. gag harbor on November 17th, 2008 7:27 pm

Acorn is behind the votes going to Mauro. It’s grassroots. Stuff that ballot box people…
I wonder if the original intention of this was to have a single person vote in every IP he/she can think of?
That’s a lot of money that I hope is not just going to be awarded to the highest vote getter. The system is really flawed and brings out some bad sides of people. If the vote was a portion of the deciding factor, it would seem more fair.

  41. ooter on November 17th, 2008 7:33 pm

God, I hate those people so much…

I swear to god I will sit here and bump my threads on ESPN every 5 minutes till Thursday if that’s what it takes.

  42. DMZ on November 17th, 2008 7:40 pm

Nah, no hatred. That’s not good.

  43. ooter on November 17th, 2008 7:46 pm

You’re right…but have you read the stuff they are saying over there? It’s really frustrating. And then they criticize political campaigns for doing the same thing. Arg.

  44. SpikeKC on November 17th, 2008 7:49 pm

Please ooter — the people who have been obnoxious are catching flack for it over there.

  45. PLU Tim on November 17th, 2008 7:51 pm

It appears that another Mariners blogger, who lives in San Diego has made an appearance over at dKos.

They seem flabbergasted to find out that Kos is the founder of Sports Blog Nation.

  46. ooter on November 17th, 2008 7:54 pm

To clarify, I did not mean Daily Kos as a whole. Just the bad apples. But forget about that, not important.

Anyways, does anyone know why the voting site is not loading anymore?

  47. beef on November 17th, 2008 8:11 pm

“They seem flabbergasted to find out that Kos is the founder of Sports Blog Nation.”

By they, do you mean the other mariners blogger or someone else?

  48. PLU Tim on November 17th, 2008 8:14 pm

beef – the posters on Kos. The other M’s blogger helped point that out.

  49. beef on November 17th, 2008 8:15 pm

    ah, thanks for the clarification.

I wonder if someone is putting a DDOS on the site? it’s been down for a little while now.

  50. Typical Idiot Fan on November 17th, 2008 8:16 pm

I might be a fiscal conservative, but in no way am I associated with those folks or what they’re supposedly doing. I can only guess that this is somehow Corco’s fault.

God, I hate those people so much…

See… this is exactly why I’m backing away from this. I don’t want to hate people no matter how stupid they are. Worse, I don’t want Dave associated with my emotional outrage.

They seem flabbergasted to find out that Kos is the founder of Sports Blog Nation.

    “Forbidden

You don’t have permission to access /blog/2008/11/06/vote-for-the-winner-of-the-2008-blogging-scholarship/ on this server.”

    on the voting page?

  52. Sports on a Schtick on November 17th, 2008 8:27 pm

Yea, it’s officially the forbidden zone now.

  53. ooter on November 17th, 2008 8:30 pm

Hmm. Maybe I should not have reloaded the page five times a minute checking the vote totals…

Speaking of which, does anyone have the latest totals before it went down?

  54. beef on November 17th, 2008 8:40 pm

i think sports were beating politics by a few 100 the last time it loaded.

  55. Colm on November 17th, 2008 9:03 pm

Yup, I’m now locked out too – which is a shame cuz I’m here on a third computer trying to squeeze in another vote for Dave.

  56. bedir on November 17th, 2008 9:04 pm

I tried to get Dave a tiny bit of help from my own blog, since the Kossacks are slamming Mauro (who is a damn fine blogger by the way).

  57. msb on November 17th, 2008 9:26 pm

    Hi Ruby,

if you stop by again, please know that:

    1. no one was attacking you. We have been frustrated and baffled by some of your remarks over the last week, especially as we know that Dave has only posted here, on his own blog, and has not been going out and asking other sites to vote for him, or to spread the word. Dave really does have a lot or readers, including those at the Times and other national publications. They have posted on their own.

    2. not everyone who has posted on the baseball sites and dKos is male and/or conservative. This is Seattle, after all.

    3. If you read the thread above, you will see that any remarks about inciting “right-wing websites” to vote was made in jest.

    4. if you read the comments at Lookout Landing, you can see that the entire thread is full of black humor and dry (and bad) jokes, including those about Dave Cameron.

    5. half-way down the long Lookout Landing page is a big green, asterisked comment by Dave Cameron. It was his only post to LL about the scholarship, and it will explain more about him than any snide remarks made by arc14, who (if you check) signed up with dKos just to write hatefully about Dave C., and who himself admitted in one of your diaries that he does not actually know Dave, but just does not like his website.

  58. vj on November 18th, 2008 2:46 am

I just spent a few minutes going through the comment threads. Entertaining drama.

  59. Osfan on November 18th, 2008 7:40 am

I voted for Dave – just once. It’s a poorly thought out scholarship offer. I’m sure the people who set up the contest didn’t want it to turn into something like this. All this is going to prove is that more people care about politics than Baseball. I love baseball, but more people should care about politics. Dave is a much better writer and puts out much more thoughtful and original content than that political guy. I think nearly every clear thinking person would agree with this, regardless of what they think of baseball. The vote is unfair. Donate a couple of bucks instead of stooping to the level of the KOS people by stuffing the ballot box.

  60. Colm on November 19th, 2008 7:42 pm

801 vote spread, in favor or Mauro, as of my latest check.

Voting seems to have stalled somewhat.
