Donate to the USSM Dave scholarship

DMZ · November 21, 2008 at 7:48 am · Filed Under Site information

Dave lost out in the internet polling for the $10k fund, which obviously I regard as a pretty huge injustice in the world. If that org wants to award based on clicks though, it’s their money. Still, Dave ran up over 11,500 votes before the last day, when his candidacy got any attention for non-baseball reasons, and I’ve been asked here, elsewhere, and via email, to try and set something up for direct college donations.

I think this is a great idea: Dave is newly married, awesome, the money will make a huge difference, and I have every faith that he’ll do good works with his economics degree, here and elsewhere.

So, I give you the 2008 USSM Scholarship Fund. All contributions go to Dave except what Paypal skims. I’ll match the first $500 myself.

If you want to give Dave some cash directly, email us and we’ll work something out. Contributions are not tax-deductible because I have no idea how to arrange that on short notice.

Updated: hey, it’s a pledgie badge! I have no idea if or how this works, but check it out.

Click here to lend your support to: The USS Mariner Dave Scholarship and make a donation at www.pledgie.com !

Two things to note: this doesn’t count my $500, which you managed to match in apx ten seconds (brief digression: when that happened, I stared at the monitor with a huge grin of surprise on my face for a good half-minute). And it doesn’t count the not-in-Pledgie donations.

And let’s not rehash the scholarship voting here. If you want to support this, that’s great, and if you don’t, or you want to hate on the winner, this is not the place.

Or here’s the original paypal button if you think Pledgie is Sketchie or something.

Throwing Dave a few bucks so he can make himself smarter was indeed a pleasure. Glad you’re doing this, DMZ.

  2. Teej on November 21st, 2008 8:31 am

I donated with the regular PayPal button last night, but consider that to be a donation to the scholarship fund. Glad to help out.

  3. ooter on November 21st, 2008 8:33 am

I think we should have the pledgie thing people were talking about. That way we can see his progress.

  4. JWay on November 21st, 2008 8:33 am

    email sent!

  5. DMZ on November 21st, 2008 8:38 am

I don’t know how to do that. I’m happy to post updates.

  6. ahhruff on November 21st, 2008 8:51 am

    Donation sent!

  7. Matt the Dragon on November 21st, 2008 8:58 am

My vote wasn’t enough, but seeing as I learned last week that I’m not being made redundant (bad time to start a new career in banking) I guess I can contribute this way.

  8. PositivePaul on November 21st, 2008 9:07 am

Cool, couple of mouse clicks, a few real bucks. Truly an honor to send some cash Dave’s direction!

Good on all of you – DMZ for centralizing this, and everyone else for contributing!

  9. DoesntCompute on November 21st, 2008 9:18 am

    Done, gladly.

  10. jamhov on November 21st, 2008 9:20 am

I may be a simple lurker, but I just thought I’d say I was more then happen to donate

  11. DKulich on November 21st, 2008 9:25 am

Glad to be able to help out… Thanks for setting this up, Derek; good luck to you, Dave!

  12. Evan on November 21st, 2008 9:30 am

I stopped giving change to panhandlers this year because now I have a baby to worry about, but Dave’s way more valuable than panhandlers.

    Donation sent.

  13. Sklyansky on November 21st, 2008 9:37 am

The way things went down were pretty sickening, so I sent what I could (I’m unemployed, so it wasn’t much).

  14. scotje on November 21st, 2008 9:56 am

I know somebody was working on a Pledgie yesterday, but after looking at it more and seeing that it was easy to verify the money was going to the right place, I went ahead and set this one up myself:

    USS Mariner Dave Scholarship Pledgie

When you go to donate through that page it will take to you the PayPal page where you can clearly see it’s going to the same PayPal account as the normal USSM PayPal link. The only difference being that Pledgie will keep track of how much has been donated and show progress towards a goal.

I sent the Pledgie people an e-mail to see if there was a way to update the progress with the amount that people have already donated in the last couple days. (They already replied! I guess, they are going to add this feature “very soon”.)

Derek you can snag the “Add A Badge To Your Site” if you want to put the little progress bar on the page.

  15. tanner829 on November 21st, 2008 10:19 am

Who wouldn’t want free money for college, what about everyone else?

  16. Wilder83 on November 21st, 2008 11:00 am

I did the PayPal link. Hopefully it gets added to the Pledgie total.

  17. Evan on November 21st, 2008 11:03 am

It looks like you have to use the Pledgie link to get the donation counted there. And most of us haven’t.

  18. arbeck on November 21st, 2008 11:08 am

I used the old link too, and my money isn’t counted.

  19. dasBoot on November 21st, 2008 11:12 am

    Pledgied. Happy learning, Dave.

  20. scotje on November 21st, 2008 11:17 am

Yeah, I asked Pledgie about updating the total manually, they said that’s like their top requested feature right now and they will have it soon.

I could try to get them to do some sort of manual database update for us, I’d just need to know from Derek what the total so far should be. (You can send the numbers to my account e-mail if you want me to try Derek.)

  21. JWay on November 21st, 2008 11:18 am

Good luck Dave! Check is in the mail! Go Mariners!

  22. Robert on November 21st, 2008 11:25 am

Don’t have much to give but I glad that I could give something.

  23. Sports on a Schtick on November 21st, 2008 11:48 am

    Donated!

  24. scotje on November 21st, 2008 12:05 pm

I guess the other thing I could do is just reduce the goal amount based on what was donated before the Pledgie was set up. That’s really easy to update.

  25. gwangung on November 21st, 2008 1:11 pm

Frap. That number is embarassingly low.

    Gonna have to fix that.

And ya gotta keep this close to the top around paydays….

  26. SCL on November 21st, 2008 1:28 pm

It’s ironic that I’m giving to Dave’s education, when he’s been the one educating me. Thank you Dave and God Bless you!

  27. Steve T on November 21st, 2008 1:33 pm

But I don’t want Dave to go to school! I want him to stay locked in Derek’s basement writing for USSM!

    Here’s an interesting thing:[ot]

  28. arbeck on November 21st, 2008 1:34 pm

I wish I could have donated more than I did.

I did post a diary on Daily Kos urging people to come donate. Lets see how that works.

  29. longbeachglenn on November 21st, 2008 2:04 pm

Dave has more than earned this and I am glad to help knowing how much he has meant to me in my education.

  30. egreenlaw9 on November 21st, 2008 2:05 pm

Is there any way to place the pledgie badge up on top of the left hand column, where the scholarship thing used to be?

It’d be great to be able to see the progress and have it at the top of the page every time we stop by.

  31. kmsandrbs on November 21st, 2008 2:29 pm

As someone said at one point during the voting … if everyone who voted gave just $1 … Dave would have his scholarship (and then some).

Of course, if you voted more than once …

  32. Dave Clapper on November 21st, 2008 2:33 pm

Donated! Considering The Stranger tried to help out with the voting on Slog yesterday, y’all might wanna send the link to them as well.

  33. Typical Idiot Fan on November 21st, 2008 3:52 pm

    [no politics]

Now that I’m off my soapbox, I will happily contribute to this fund the moment I get home and onto my Paypal account.

  34. scotje on November 21st, 2008 4:37 pm

Well, we’re thoroughly dominating the first 3 pages of “recent pledges” at Pledgie.

  35. Dave Clapper on November 21st, 2008 4:47 pm

Looks like we’ve already met the $500 match Derek said he’d do. Woo!

  36. Capo on November 21st, 2008 4:53 pm

Donated through Pay Pal instead of the Pledge Drive link, can you update the total of the two so we know how much we need to raise?

  37. scotje on November 21st, 2008 4:56 pm

Quoting myself from earlier this afternoon:

Yeah, I asked Pledgie about updating the total manually, they said that’s like their top requested feature right now and they will have it soon.

Maybe Derek will have time to total the pre- and post-Pledgie totals and give us an approximate number when he isn’t otherwise saving the world from injustice.

  38. JenV on November 21st, 2008 4:56 pm

Shoot, I donated before the Pledgie went up. Ah well.

Arbeck, thanks for diarying this on DKos. People get a little over-excited there at times but they are good people. I plan to post a diary myself soon since diaries fall of the front page so fast if they don’t get on the Rec list.

Also, I am going to email Kos and ask him to do a Story or a mention on the front page with a link. Any other Kossacks here want to do the same?

  39. Typical Idiot Fan on November 21st, 2008 5:49 pm

    [no politics]

    What? No “ZOMG!”?

Sorry, I just wanted to get in a parting shot at the commie pinkos. Making my donation now.

I have no idea how Daily Kos is set up (it’s not particularly easy on the eyes or intuitive on first visit), could you link us to where we could read this? I’d love to see something positive on that website to get the bad taste out of my mouth and put a cap on this silliness.

  41. drag0n on November 21st, 2008 6:53 pm

That’s true folks… no need to hate on the winner here… There has been and will be plenty of that over there ;-)

There are actually nice users over there. A number of whom have already kicked in.

Also, I did very nicely ask that we not take up the previous vote here, soooooo… yeah.

  43. Steve T on November 21st, 2008 8:35 pm

    I’m sorry. I wasn’t hatin’, just askin’.

Sorry, sorry. I almost just left it, but we really need to return to our normal “no politics” rule and you were a convenient person to pick on to make that point. :)

    Awesome. Thanks!

I’ll be donating a 10 spot when I get paid next week. It’s very cool seeing USSM come together like this.

  46. Steve T on November 21st, 2008 9:04 pm

I am pro-commie-pinko, but I support Dave. I clicked the wrong link, though, so I’m not in the Pledgie.

By the way, USSM is the ONLY website for which I will tolerate comment-editing. I look forward to being the first to eat the crow and celebrate our 20?? WS victory. Hopefully not as drunk as I am now.

  47. ooter on November 21st, 2008 9:24 pm

Hmmm. I’m pretty sure my donation isn’t showing up on the Pledge thing. I sent it to the link on this thread. Was I supposed to see something about pledgie? Because I just saw the paypal page. I know it went to derek@ussmariner.com

  48. DMZ on November 21st, 2008 9:32 pm

If you went straight to paypal, no worries, it just doesn’t show up in the pledgie widget.

  49. ooter on November 21st, 2008 9:40 pm

Oh ok. So, out of curiosity, what is it up to now?

  50. JerBear on November 21st, 2008 10:27 pm

Glad to do what little I can. Good luck, Dave.

Thanks, Derek, for putting this up. We all think you’re just as cool as Dave, btw. :)

  51. OppositeField on November 21st, 2008 10:32 pm

That we do. I wish this Pledgie thing went to $10,500 so we could buy DMZ a year’s supply of Redhook ESB once Dave has his scholarship.

  52. Beniitec on November 22nd, 2008 12:00 am

I think we shouldn’t put a 10k limit. I say we blow that scholarship out of the water. Donation coming soon…

I think we shouldn’t put a 10k limit. I say we blow that scholarship out of the water. Donation coming soon…

For the sake of all the shit that went down, I think $10,000 is where it should stay. It’s closure, if nothing else.

By the by, DMZ, give us some updates periodically on the amount given. I know the Pledgie link shows the amount given to that account, but from what I’ve read thus far the Paypal donations don’t get recorded there.

  54. ooter on November 22nd, 2008 7:49 am

I think donation over $10,000 should go the general ussmariner fund. Let’s not forget about the importance of that either!

On a related note, what is the total received so far?

  55. Envirohawk on November 22nd, 2008 8:21 am

Donation sent. Diggin’ the pledgie thingy.

DMZ – thanks sincerely for putting this up, and for giving all of us another chance to say thanks for everything you both have put into this site. It’s honestly a privilege.

  56. JLP on November 22nd, 2008 9:56 am

Thanks for listening to suggestions and setting this up, Derek. You know, it’s nice to know that there are actual people on the other end of the internet, not just some stuck-up dicks that don’t listen to their readership. There were plenty of us sending emails and writing suggestions in threads saying that this needed to be done. Dave is more than deserving. Maybe we could make this an annual thing.

  57. hairofthedawg on November 22nd, 2008 10:31 am

Hell, Corco’s giving beer money, it must be a good cause…

  58. DMZ on November 22nd, 2008 11:23 am

The initial Paypal donations didn’t get in there. I haven’t gone back and reconciled this.

  59. scotje on November 22nd, 2008 3:52 pm

Cracked $1500 on Pledgie alone, keep it up guys!

  60. katal on November 23rd, 2008 2:56 pm

Just threw a few dollars towards the cause. Great idea, Derek.

  61. Typical Idiot Fan on November 24th, 2008 3:39 pm

2k mark came and went + whatever’s in the PayPal.

  62. Steve T on November 25th, 2008 9:35 am

$2800 + whatever’s in the Paypal (including mine) plus Derek’s match — I’m very pleasantly surprised. It’s not $10k, but unlike an online click it’s genuinely out of our pockets. Money well spent, if you ask me.

  63. Evan on November 26th, 2008 10:39 am

Since Derek’s matching target was apparently met before the Pledgie went up, that means the total so far is a minimum of $1000 above whatever the Pledgie says.

So we’re at least 1/3 of the way there.

  64. Taylor H on December 1st, 2008 7:40 pm

2662 smackers for Dave! I’d be happy to drive up the count.
