Per LaRue: Woo! Draft picks, here we come.

Also, Lee Tinsley was hired as the first base coach, and Ty Van Burkleo will be officially introduced as the new bench coach.

I hope he goes to a winner, both for his sake and so that we get better draft picks (1st round and sandwich rather than sandwich and 2nd round if I understand the system correctly).

Thanks for the hitting and hard work Raul. Hopefully you can get Yuni to drop 20 pounds this off-season as a parting gift.

  2. msb on December 1st, 2008 12:47 pm

man, I do NOT remember Tinsley’s 49 games in ’97.

  3. Mike Snow on December 1st, 2008 12:48 pm

Do you remember his 11 games in ’93?

  4. xxtinynickxx on December 1st, 2008 12:54 pm

Would it be to brash to offer Edgar Renteria a contract and trade off Yuni or Lopez. I know Edgar had a down year last season but he did pretty well before hand if i remember right.

  5. galaxieboi on December 1st, 2008 12:55 pm

I, however, vividly remember Mr. Tinsley’s 49 games in ’97. *shudder*

It’s so nice to not worry about the GM screwing up easy decisions like this.

  7. msb on December 1st, 2008 1:36 pm

    official release is up

  8. Alex on December 1st, 2008 2:00 pm

Nice! Now we just need to convince Ibanez to not take it. They should tell him that they have no plans for him other than DH, and then collect the draft picks.

It’s so nice to not worry about the GM screwing up easy decisions like this.

And also not to believe that every decision will be made on the basis of:
    -loyalty
    -veteran leadership
    -clubhouse presence
    -all of the above

Too bad we didn’t do it with Guillen last year…that would have been another two picks…

  12. Jeff Sullivan on December 1st, 2008 2:26 pm

I believe Guillen would have netted us one pick.

  13. Teej on December 1st, 2008 2:31 pm

Too bad we didn’t do it with Guillen last year…that would have been another two picks…

Guillen was a Type B, so it would have only been one pick. But yes, it was an awful decision not to offer him arbitration.

EDIT: Jeff beat me to it.

Both Hickey and Larue report that Zduriencik says “he has one contract offer on the table to an unnamed free agent”. hmm.

Draft picks! Draft picks! ‘doing the Hampster Dance’ So is this yet another indication that the new regime knows what it is doing (assuming they don’t go ahead and make him an offer he can’t refuse like that Arlington-based team did with shortstop a few years back?)?

I hope we’re offering CC Sabathia a lifetime supply of Dick’s Cheeseburgers in exchange for a 5 year contract.

Actually, scratch that, that’d be in the hundreds of millions of dollars anyways…

  20. philosofool on December 1st, 2008 4:05 pm

Sweet. There’s no way he’s going to take it. There are about ten teams that have expressed interest in signing him to a multiyear deal, apparently under the misapprehension that he’s a poor man’s Manny. (Well, maybe he is a poor man’s Manny, and the problem is that the Manny skill set is badly overvalued. I digress…)

He will certainly take look to take one of those offers over a one year stint in Seattle.

2009 is probably the most important draft in M’s history.

From the Mariner’s press release today:

“SEATTLE — The Mariners offered free-agent left fielder Raul Ibanez salary arbitration on Monday, well before the 9 p.m. PT deadline, but similar offers were not made to utility players Willie Bloomquist and Miguel Cairo. ”

That sentence makes me immeasurably happy.

  23. John D. on December 1st, 2008 5:01 pm

    I do NOT remember Tinsley’s 49 games in ‘97.

Then you probably don’t remember that he had 68 putouts and two assists. (He fielded flawlessly–1.000 Fielding Percentage.)
On most teams, the base coaches handle the coaching of infield and outfield defense.
My assumption is that Tinsley will also coach outfield defense. He’ll be all right.

  24. Sports on a Schtick on December 1st, 2008 5:05 pm

Man this offseason keeps getting better. Keep it up Z!

  25. G-Man on December 1st, 2008 5:23 pm

I remember Tinsley’s two periods in Seattle. For those who remember the endless parade of left fielders who flanked Junior for all those years, this brings to mind a trivia question:

Late one season, Junior himself finally played LF for a couple innings, waving the left fielder over to center so that he himself could be added to the list of players who played there in those years.

The player who switched with him was Tinsley.

  26. The Ancient Mariner on December 1st, 2008 5:27 pm

Didn’t Dave write over at Fangraphs about the Giants signing Renteria?

  27. Taylor H on December 1st, 2008 7:38 pm

    Z is the man!

I can’t wait to turn on ESPN next May and watch Raul “play” the outfield in a Mets uniform.

  28. joser on December 1st, 2008 7:56 pm

    Ty Van Burkleo…Wakamatsu…Zduriencik

Seriously, at least when it comes to off-field hires, this team is collecting one of the greatest sets of names in the history of baseball. They may not win the World Series, but they’ll absolutely crush Scrabble.

  29. Lucky Number on December 1st, 2008 10:15 pm

In the off-season most fans gather around the water cooler to talk about how adding certain players will help their team next season.

Mariner fans gather around to talk about how losing certain players will help their team next season.

  30. wabbles on December 1st, 2008 11:46 pm

WHAT? No abitration offers to Bloomquist or Cairo? Has this franchise learned nothing? What about WFB’s grit and hustle and versatility? What about Cairo’s ability to tutor young players like Lopez and Yuni (remember THAT crap?)? They just don’t KNOW what they are letting away for NOTHING! (Or, maybe they do, and it’s a new day in Seattle. mmmmmm)

Just curious how the compensations work say a Team like the Mets signs two Type A players?? They only have one first round pick so how is it decided who gets that one??
The last draft list I saw showed the Mariners with the 2nd and 23rd pick already. Would Fields not signed be the reason for the 23rd pick or is that yet another??

  32. The Ancient Mariner on December 2nd, 2008 6:31 am

It goes by relative rating of the players. Let’s say the Mets signed three Type A free agents — they’re all Type A, but within that range, each has a different numerical rating. The team that lost the highest-ranked player gets the Mets’ first-rounder, then the team that lost the next-highest-ranked player gets their second-rounder, and then the team that lost the third guy gets their third-rounder.

A few years ago, somebody or other (Baltimore? I think) went out and signed four Type A guys, and we saw this play out; I forget which team got a fourth-rounder back, but I remember thinking that was really a gyp.

  33. Colm on December 2nd, 2008 6:44 am

Wow. How low have the past five years set our expectations? The team makes three no-brainer decisions that I could explain to my 8 year old, and we’re both impressed and surprised.

Wow. How low have the past five years set our expectations? The team makes three no-brainer decisions that I could explain to my 8 year old, and we’re both impressed and surprised.

The life of a Mariner fan these days, I’m afraid.

Does anyone know Raul’s rating compared to other notable Type A’s on today’s market? I just have this nagging feeling that we’ll be the team that gets another teams third-rounder because that team signed two higher rated Type A’s.

  35. Colm on December 2nd, 2008 7:40 am

That’s possible – but it hardly invalidates this decision.

  36. Omerta on December 2nd, 2008 7:54 am

    Welcome back Lee Tinsley.

  37. wabbles on December 2nd, 2008 8:27 am

Regarding the one free agent offer on the table, KING 5 Sports had a voice over of Z-man while showing a clip of a certain former Cincinnati center fielder playing that same position for the Chicago White Sox. I don’t know what the source was, maybe they were just asking and Z-man was being coy/diplomatic but DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN He’s baaaaaaaack!

  38. Teej on December 2nd, 2008 8:35 am

Does anyone know Raul’s rating compared to other notable Type A’s on today’s market?

Among the DH/1B/OF group, Raul is behind only Teixeira. Here’s the full list.

  39. The Ancient Mariner on December 2nd, 2008 8:44 am

Yeah, if you only count the AL — Manny’s ahead of him too.

  40. Teej on December 2nd, 2008 8:51 am

    Ah, yes. Thanks.

  41. bakomariner on December 2nd, 2008 8:57 am

    Wabbles-

Not saying that The Kid won’t be back, but Z has stated that he has NOT made an offer to Griffey, but has only talked with his agent…so I think this official offer to a free-agent isn’t Griffey…

  42. Taylor H on December 2nd, 2008 9:46 am

Griffey could be a target for some coaching job in the organization.

  43. DMZ on December 2nd, 2008 9:52 am

Like “go coach Griffey to play defense in left”? That’d be Lee Tinsley’s job, wouldn’t it?

  44. bakomariner on December 2nd, 2008 10:23 am

Nice DMZ…I hope it’s not Griffey out there…but really, I’m excited to see ANYBODY out there instead of Raul…

  45. msb on December 2nd, 2008 10:58 am

I love all the wild headlines & speculation stemming from a simple comment like:

“I have had some discussions with Ken Griffey’s agent, and we talked of some possibilities,” Zduriencik said, “but it was more inquiry than anything else. Nothing more than that.”

  46. wabbles on December 2nd, 2008 4:00 pm

I’ve always thought that Griffey as a coach would be very similar to Magic Johnson as a coach: “Okay, starting in right-center, you’re supposed to run down the line drive in left-center and then fire to second for the double play, like this… Okay, now you try.”

  47. msb on December 3rd, 2008 10:40 am

Kirby Arnold decided to call Brian Goldberg.

I’m sure you’ll be surprised to hear that Jr’s agent says he is in great shape, and raring to play anywhere, anytime.
