    Yay KIRO Yay!

Stand-up RBI triple from Tui. Clement throwing out a guy trying to steal 2nd. Endy getting a lead-off single and stealing a base. Nice.

3rd base coach waving an M into an easy out at the plate. Not nice. Some things never change.

Fortunately, that also includes the lovely, summery sounds of Dave Niehaus.

It may be monsooning outside my window, but baseball is back.

Not streaming via KIRO. Are those of us beyond the radio waves out of luck?

  4. BBOneFive on February 25th, 2009 1:35 pm

An M’s third base coach waving a runner into an easy out is better than an M’s third base coach waving a runner into a blown up knee…

You know it’s spring when we can listen to a game against the hated, hated Padres…

  6. Nate on February 25th, 2009 1:45 pm

    down 3-2 after 2.

    Dave’s chatting with JackZ
says he’d “like” to go north with 12 pitchers, but obviously non-committal on anything.

he also said “realisitically we’re the 4th best team in this division right now”.

praised Gutierrez’s range, reads, and arm in the outfield.

At least Z is realistic about things.

Thank you Bill Bavasi for leaving behind a crater.

You know, rebuilding wouldn’t be so bad if EVERY TEAM I CARE ABOUT DIDN’T HAVE TO DO IT AT THE SAME TIME!!!!

And yes, I’m aware I was typing in ALL CAPS.

    I liked Dave’s interview with Z.

Some good comments, explaining some basic things such as why it is better to have Cedeno than Bloomquist (age and club control primarily).

  9. Wells on February 25th, 2009 2:10 pm

I tried to listen to the broadcast on MLB.tv and was, lo, surprised to hear the Jim Rome show. Annoying.

    3 – 2 Pads after 7 innings.

M’s have been leaving runners on base.

OK, most players on both sides won’t be on the major league teams, but still this is probably something we will be seeing a lot.

  11. Nate on February 25th, 2009 2:25 pm

yeah, 2 runs on 11 hits so far I think.

Mike Carp at bat (lucky to be here after his automobile accident) takes a walk after running the count full. always good to see.

  12. Nate on February 25th, 2009 2:30 pm

Chris Shelton up with a runner on and one out…
    takes a walk on a 3-1 ball.

I hope Yuni is watching this.

  13. Nate on February 25th, 2009 2:34 pm

after a fielding error (1B threw a grounder into the back of the runner going to 2nd) we’ve got bases loaded and one out.

Crab (Spelling?) is batting with Wilson (just re-signed) on deck. Crab swings and misses at a full-count, high fastball.

  14. Nate on February 25th, 2009 2:36 pm

Wilson strikes out on a 2-2 pitch out of the strike zone.

    still down by one.

  15. wabbles on February 25th, 2009 2:40 pm

Yeah, I can’t even get one of those text-only play by play thingys. I’m having to settle for hitting refresh on the line score. ‘sigh’ But baseball is back!

  16. Nate on February 25th, 2009 2:49 pm

Rob Johnson hits a line-drive home run in the top 9th to tie the game.

    good stuff.

  17. Nate on February 25th, 2009 2:50 pm

    ’sigh’ But baseball is back!

I know! win or lose today (or for spring), I’ve got baseball on the radio!

that was too long for winter, snow, and discontent.

heading to the bottom of 9th tied 3-3.

  18. Nate on February 25th, 2009 2:59 pm

ok, so it’s spelled Callix Crabbe. my apologies.

heading to extra innings in the charity game? I think the padres have used at least one pitcher per inning…

    yep. 10th inning baseball

  19. Secret Agent Man on February 25th, 2009 3:09 pm

Ernesto Frieri. Now there’s a cool name.

  20. joser on February 25th, 2009 3:11 pm

In his interview Zduriencik certainly sounded like the plan was to have Endy in the outfield a lot of the time. When they were talking about Junior, Z talked about him being 39 and recovering from surgery and then emphasized how he and Wakamatsu have had discussions with Griffey about wanting to rest him and keep him healthy so they have him for the full season. Later when they were talking about the outfield he raved about Franklin Gutierrez and talked about having three center fielders. Griffey didn’t come up at all.

  21. Nate on February 25th, 2009 3:21 pm

padres score on a GRDouble over the fence in the bottom of the 10th.
    they win 4-3

    still fun to listen to.

I don’t understand why anyone(ok, I guess I’m talking mostly about the press) would even think Endy was brought in to be the 4th outfielder when Zduriencik has made it pretty clear from the get go that Endy is the starting LF.

  23. LloydBraun on February 25th, 2009 3:33 pm

We can afford to lose this one. After all, it doesn’t even count in the standings.

  24. joser on February 25th, 2009 3:33 pm

Crap, there goes the perfect season. The team is already in a hole, and even worse it’s a loss to their Hated, Hated Rivals.

Wait, what do you mean this doesn’t show up in the standings?

  25. Slippery Elmer on February 25th, 2009 3:47 pm

    I blame Silva.

  26. Alex on February 25th, 2009 4:11 pm

Thats good news on the Zduriencik interview!

The Griffey interview yesterday had me very worried.

Z has the power in this situation, so its much more likely that he’ll get his way over Griffey and we’ll see Chavez in LF and Griffey DH.

Maybe Griffey just feels a need to show to fans that he wants to play LF, but will be willing to settle for DHing in the end.

Anyone know if there’s a game log of this match available anywhere (or if there will be game logs once spring training proper starts?).
As for today, I didn’t catch the game, but RRS’s line (2IP, 2 H, 1BB, 0K, 3GB, 2FB) looks pretty pleasing. I’m also glad Ronny Cedeno went 2-3. I’d prefer him as SS over Yuni even if he isn’t any better, simply because seeing Yuni always makes me wince. It’s exquisitely painful how he’s regressed into a replacement level player.

  28. Kazinski on February 25th, 2009 11:36 pm

You can pretty much bet that Griffey will be mostly DH’ing. Just look at it from a roster perspective. Safeco is obviously a better fit for a lefthanded hitter, and 70% of the starting pitching in the league is righthanded, so that leaves Griffey and Clement as the only two candidates. If Clement DH’s then the Mariners have to carry 3 catchers, because the DH can’t switch positions in the middle of a game without the pitcher having to bat.

With 3 catchers, and 12 pitchers, then you’re left with 3 bench players, which would be Endy Chavez, Ronnie Cedeno, and either Sweeny, Balentien, or Shelton as your RH DH and reserve, and none of them can play more than one position. That is an awfully thin and not very versatile bench. Branyan helps out a little because he can play both 3rd base and the outfield. That just isn’t an acceptable roster

So with Griffey as the DH, then you can carry two catchers and open up another slot on the bench.
