Commercials out

Ahhhh, let us begin our yearly ritual of complaining about how this year’s commercials aren’t as good as the classics.

Recommended topics for discussion:
– What do these commercials say the M’s believe about this series?
– And what is the advertising intended to assuage us about?
– Which players are apparently out of favor and likely to be traded?
– What’s the Moose’s current standing in the M’s universe?

If I were in charge of the M’s commercials, I’d make them all Ichiro-centric. Random 30s slices of Ichiro’s world would be awesome, and probably sell the team as well as anything else could. Like him making fun of Lasorda:

Tommy Lasorda, the tournament’s official mascot, held court during batting practice with several Japanese players.
Ichiro Suzuki stopped by and spoke passable English with Lasorda, who in turn spoke passable English with Suzuki. Ichiro kept pointing to Lasorda’s circumferentially-challenged midsection and saying, “How many months?”
Clearly unfamiliar with certain idioms, Lasorda answered, “I’m 82 years old.”

Jamie’s French radar gun was one of my favorites. Ooh La La!

    dchappelle,

Watching that Edgar one reminded how much I miss Eagle Hardware.

Actually, mkd, the “marketing guy is a blowhard idiot” schtick has been an ongoing theme. I have to say, I actually liked the RR-S ad, though that’s probably in part because I appreciated them featuring him, given that he’s not a star (and might not even be on the Opening Day roster).

Also, I think y’all ought to listen to Jar on this one; M’s fans are spoiled compared to fans of a lot of teams. Yeah, these aren’t the genius-level commercials that we’ve seen some years, but if they’re an off year, they’re still an Ichiro off year, not a Bloomquist off year.

(I do wish someone at C + F was a regular LL reader, though; a Bedard ad along the lines of “Erik Bedard’s Greeting Cards” or TWSG could be marvelous.)

The LL Greeting Cards are amusing. I’m still expecing a Christmas Card with a tree on the front and just “…” when you open it.

I think one with Bedard just saying, “my ass is fine.” would be hilarious. Emphasis on ass, emphasis on fine, or no emphasis at all and it would be hilarious.

Well, they’ve had some great ones over the years. For my money, the Edgar BP, the Moyer radar gun and the Sele Mowing are the best. That one with Cora and the puppets is pure gold as well, oddly I really don’t remember ever seeing it before.

They could be so much more seems like they held back. Should of had the monkey attack an annoying Angels fan and tear off their hands and face and……….err whoops already been done before hmmm……..

Maybe a Ron Burgendy skit. Have a collaboration of Sounders FC, Seahawks, UW and Mariners broadcast teams and have them a brawl in the streets in the north part of South Park. Have Dave throw a broken baseball bat through Kevin Calabro chest. Ahh good times……….

Seriously “A new day a new way” that is all they got. Wow that’s going to get me rushing home from work early to catch an early start game in Baltimore. It’s almost as bad as Lefevre Believer.

I guess I was spoiled by the early years. The last few years the commercials seem to have been getting worse and worse. Nothing jumped out at me this year. Too bad, I used to wait eagerly for the new commercials each spring, now ho hum.

If you think the commercials are getting stale, you should try reading the comments about them! They’re pretty much exactly the same as last year. I don’t know that these are worse or better than the ones of yesteryear, or if we’re all just tired of the shtick.

Actually I though joser’s comment was pretty insightful (even if he got a couple of detail wrong…).

I think the Ichiro one would’ve been better if the machine chucked a fastball at the clubhouse buffet on the way to the showers.

I just hope the M’s don’t suck as much as the commercials do this year.
