So Silva pitches for the Mostly Mariners (AKA Seattle Sudamerica) tonight, which means Felix is the starter for the final (assuming they win, of course). Should Japan get past the US, that sets up Ichiro vs Felix in the first AB of the championship game (if Japan is considered the visiting team… how do they determine that?)

As delicious as that sounds — the All Mariner “World” Baseball Classic — and as happy as I would be for Ichiro/Johjima or Felix/Carlos/Endy/Jose, whichever side wins, am I crazy to be wishing for Japan and Venezuela to both get bounced at this point? Not because I think a USA-Korea final would be interesting, but because I want to see all those guys back in camp sooner rather than later (and size or seven fewer innings on Felix’ ’09 workload).

Wow, Abreu just dropped a routine fly ball in the WBC. Sad.

I just got back to my hotel from the game…couple things for ya…

The complex is beautiful…and everything was soooo lax…if you’ve never been to spring training…you need to go…

Griffey looked okay at the plate and bad in the field…Oakland’s first two runs came on three hits that landed between Griff and Tui…granted, even Chavez might not have got to them, but still he has no legs…

Side note on that, I said aloud, “He can still hit, but we need a real left-fielder out there,” and was waiting for the retirement community to lay into me…shockingly, they all agreed…it was great…maybe the 60+ crowd are fans of ussmariner…

Tui looked pretty good at third…

    Gutierrez hit a moon-shot homer…

Griff was chatting up with the crowd…

RRS and Bedard were passing out the most autographs…

I could go on and on, but I’ll just end with this was my first spring training and hopefully not the last…worth the 8 hour drive…it was a very fun experience…you need to go…

Going to see them tomorrow again against the Cubbies…Bedard pitching…gonna get more pics…

    Have a good weekend…

Well the decision to start Silva backfired… Korea put up a 5 in the first and there’s still only 1 out.

The Burger Chef is getting lit up.

Five runs in the first already, with only one out.

  9. zzyzx on March 21st, 2009 5:29 pm

Well I can’t really blame him. One fly ball was dropped and another would have been caught if the outfield had any range.

That’s the Carlos we know and didn’t love from last year. One walk, one home run (to Shin-Soo Choo), almost as many balls as strikes….

But hey, Silva’s doing his best to get all the boys back to Peoria asap.

  11. zzyzx on March 21st, 2009 5:31 pm

And Felix is rushed to the bullpen…

  12. ScottBrowne on March 21st, 2009 5:37 pm

Looks like the real Carlos Silva finally joined the Venezuelan team.

  13. kyoko on March 21st, 2009 5:39 pm

    Carlos Silva is a dick

  14. zzyzx on March 21st, 2009 5:49 pm

OK now Silva is getting killed :/

Looks like the real Carlos Silva finally joined the Venezuelan team.

Aye. This is just ugly. He is leaving everything up.

Really, though. His first two starts were against teams with zero offense.

The good news is, we get our players back in camp early!

That’s the Carlos we know and didn’t love from last year.

That’s exactly what I was going to say.

RRS has to be smiling right now…

  18. Paul B on March 21st, 2009 6:08 pm

RRS didn’t look so good in his last start, either.

I’m hoping that Abreu fields like that for the Angels this year.

  19. bratman on March 21st, 2009 6:39 pm

    should have started The King

  20. JerBear on March 21st, 2009 9:12 pm

    3 words: f***ing Luis Sojo.

Oh well, get them back to camp.

speaking of the suddenly-social Bedard, according to Roy Corcoran this afternoon, “Me and Bedard” will be going to Pappadeaux on Monday to eat a mess of crawfish …

I was also at the game. Griffey was horrendous in the field. Yes, I’m not convinced that another LF could have got to the two bloopers that dropped down the line between Griffey and Tui, but the other one was inexcusable.

Basically, the ball was blooped down the left field line and when hit, it could have been fair or foul. Griffey commenced to literally jog towards the line (I’m serious, Griffey put forth very little effort), the ball dropped in fair territory, and what should have been a single or possibly a double, turned into a triple due to Jr.’s lazy play. Those three plays were noticed by everyone around me in the stands and hopefully Wakamatsu et al.
