Game 1, Felix versus Twins

DMZ · April 6, 2009 at 3:20 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Opening Day, Felix Day. 5:05. Lineups are out early and so here’s the game thread.

LF-L Chavez
CF-R Gutierrez
DH-R Sweeney
3B-R Beltre
RF-L Griffey
2B-R Lopez
1B-L Branyan
C-R Johjima
SS-R Betancourt

The Twins have some jerks. I don’t know that it’ll matter, what with Felix pitching.

Dave adds: Wooooooooooooooooooooooo!

    Griffey in right. Ye Gods.

    On AstroTurf!

  3. Go Felix on April 6th, 2009 3:36 pm

RF……..Griffey? This is going to be a long game season

  4. vj on April 6th, 2009 3:36 pm

All I have got to say is:

    GO M’s

  5. Cole F on April 6th, 2009 3:39 pm

I had a dream last night that Griffey grounded out weakly to SS off a power lefty to end the game. Weird.

  6. Ralph_Malph on April 6th, 2009 3:42 pm

I thought Baker said this was Griffey’s honorary opening day start in RF — not any indication that he’ll ever play there again. He’ll DH the next 2 games and then sit against the lefthander.

  7. Sports on a Schtick on April 6th, 2009 3:45 pm

I’m still disappointed Yuni is starting, let alone on the team. And Sweeney batting third?

    Whatever, win Mariners! Win!

  8. Transient Gadfly on April 6th, 2009 3:50 pm

Seriously, I don’t care about anything else. Clicking on Mariner blogs and seeing a game thread posted is like inhaling and suddenly noticing that the air contains oxygen again. I seriously don’t know how I survive the winter.

    I second such a deduction.

    I thirds that!!!

  11. kenshabby on April 6th, 2009 3:58 pm

Hm, did McLaren whisper today’s starting lineups in Wakamatsu’s ear during nap time? So sad about Ichiro. Starting day just won’t be the same. I guess Mauer’s absence kind of evens things out, though.

Ah, Astroturf. I have fond memories of playing kiddie sporting events on that unnatural surface, such as the football game in which four opposing players slammed me into the ground. It was like landing on concrete, but with the benefits of rug burn.

  12. Paul B on April 6th, 2009 4:00 pm

First full day of baseball, and it’s over 70 degrees here in the NW!

  13. lewis458 on April 6th, 2009 4:01 pm

Is it just me, or is that a god awful 1-2-3? Is there any way it shouldn’t be Beltre, Lopez, Griffey? Or if L-R alternating was important, maybe Chavez, Beltre, Branyan, Lopez, Griffey, Sweeney.

I guess I just don’t see why you’d give (arguably) the two weakest batters the most PAs…

  14. Slurve on April 6th, 2009 4:07 pm

Watching Griffey/Branyan looks helpless against the LHP Liriano is gonna be both painful yet somehow awesome.

  15. Luc on April 6th, 2009 4:07 pm

Why is Lopez batting sixth? Weird.

  16. Ralph_Malph on April 6th, 2009 4:09 pm

If it was McLaren, Griffey would be leading off because he’s in for Ichiro, Lopez would be hitting 2nd because middle infielders hit 2nd, and Chavez would be hitting 3rd because he’s replacing Ibanez.

And Bloomquist would be playing CF.

  17. mkd on April 6th, 2009 4:13 pm

Ichiro not playing kinda wrecks the whole dynamic of the lineup, but if we’re going with a sentimental RF spot for Griffey, why not put him in the 3 hole, too? Doesn’t that net double ego-assuasion points?

    Anyway, Felix!

  18. NorthofWrigleyField on April 6th, 2009 4:13 pm

If Chavez and Gutierrez are the weakest batters on the team when a LHP is on the mound in a lineup that includes Junior, Branyan, Betancourt and Johjima, then this team is absolutely done for this season.

Hitting LHPs are one of the few things the Mariners should be able to do this year. With the exceptions of Junior and Branyan, this lineup isn’t a bad idea, as long as Gutierrez and Sweeney hit better than Johjima and Lopez.

  19. eponymous coward on April 6th, 2009 4:15 pm

Aren’t we all glad that we got rid of that aging, lumbering, singles-hitting former shell of an All-Star DH we had last year for Mike Swee-hey, wait a minute…

    -sigh-

  20. BoiseMoose on April 6th, 2009 4:22 pm

Nothing quite like opening day. The sun shines a bit brighter, the birds chirp a little chirpier, and everybody is in first place. This may be the ONLY day we see first place all year, so I shall revel in its spring fresh scent.

    Go Felix.

  21. billT on April 6th, 2009 4:27 pm

    Why is Lopez batting sixth?

I’d rather he be there than second. For whatever reason, whenever he hits second it seems like he tries to hit the ball on the ground on the right side rather than hitting with any power.

  22. egreenlaw9 on April 6th, 2009 4:32 pm

Thank god Felix is pitching… ‘Cause this is going to be a lowwwwww-scoring game.

However – it’s Opening Day, and besides Christmas this is arguably the best calendar day of the year :)

  23. marinersintheblood on April 6th, 2009 4:34 pm

    Anybody got a video link?

(I didn’t know such things existed until I started following the Blazers, and hanging out at Blazers Edge. Now I watch almost every Blazers game via feeds. I’m really hoping the same thing works for Mariners games. Help me out here.)

  24. NorthofWrigleyField on April 6th, 2009 4:34 pm

if you want horrible… look at the Twins lineup… i’m thinking a 3-1 game.

  25. ScottBrowne on April 6th, 2009 4:36 pm

Seeing the first regular season game thread of the year put a huge smile on my face.

However – it’s Opening Day, and besides Christmas this is arguably the best calendar day of the year

Opening Day is my favorite day of the year, especially when it’s blue skies and 75 degrees out.

  26. ewdewald on April 6th, 2009 4:38 pm

I think Balentien could be DH-ing to get another RH bat in the lineup.

Branyan could come off the bench for the eventual RH reliever that will replace Liriano.

My theory is they want to ceremoniously give Branyan the nod as the team’s starting 1B this season. I think that “ceremony” aspect is often a factor on opening day, a-la-Griffey.

  27. _David_ on April 6th, 2009 4:42 pm

Happy Opening Day. Adam Jones has now reached base in all five of his PAs

  28. egreenlaw9 on April 6th, 2009 4:47 pm

Balentien should be in right, Griffey DH’ing and Sweeney at first.

Arguably even Tui should be DH’ing really.

    Give Branyan the Home Opener.

You don’t have to toss out all the nods in one day.

  29. ewdewald on April 6th, 2009 4:50 pm

Truth is we are working with very little in the on the bench.

  30. Patrick517 on April 6th, 2009 4:50 pm

This line-up looks pretty weak. I hope Beltre has a big day.

    Go King Felix!

  31. wabbles on April 6th, 2009 4:51 pm

Ahhhh, a game thread on USSMariner again. To quote President Gerald Ford, “Our long national nightmare (the baseball offseason) is over.” (Now if only I didn’t have a worthless council meeting to cover and several hours after that, things would be perfect.)

  33. az sr softball on April 6th, 2009 4:55 pm

Ah, there’s Geo Sherrill pitching the 9th with a 5-run lead. JJ pitched a 8th-inning shutout for the Mets.
    Go M’s. Life is good.

  34. JWay on April 6th, 2009 4:57 pm

If there was any decent seats left in the Metrodome, I’d be there =/ But Felix deserves better than nose bleeds….

  35. Paul B on April 6th, 2009 4:57 pm

Truth is we are working with very little in the on the bench.

This bench is so much better than what the M’s had last year it isn’t even close.

  36. themedia on April 6th, 2009 4:57 pm

Happy Opening Day. Adam Jones has now reached base in all five of his PAs

Yeah, watching the Orioles is a bit painful. If Jones tearing it up with a bat and in the field isn’t enough, George Sherrill is one out away from a save.

  37. themedia on April 6th, 2009 4:58 pm

    *Technically it’s not a save because they’re up 5*

    But still.

  38. Paul B on April 6th, 2009 4:59 pm

They just announced all the Mariner players, and the only one who got any sort of audible response from the crowd was Junior.

  39. egreenlaw9 on April 6th, 2009 5:01 pm

No – Sweeney and Gutierrez got boo’d a bit.

But that makes sense ’cause of the AL Central connections I guess.

  40. ewdewald on April 6th, 2009 5:04 pm

    Paul B-
I mean lacking Ichiro, and not bringing up an extra outfielder.

  45. Paul B on April 6th, 2009 5:10 pm

Text poll, almost half the respondents think Junior will have a bigger impact this year than Wakamatsu, Gutierrez, or Branyan.

I suppose half of the fans don’t know who those three people are.

The young woman singing the intro song for the Mariner coverage, with the fake wind blowing her hair around. Should I know who she is? (I’m a dinosaur when it comes to popular culture, so never know if someone is famous or not).

  59. Colty on April 6th, 2009 5:23 pm

That appears to be true, but does anyone know why? I mean, I’m sure the NBA doesn’t love free video links popping up at atdhe.net and justin.tv, but they’re still there. Is MLB super vigilant about shutting things down? And I can almost always find a Turkish or whatever link. I’m surprised there are no Japanese links about.

  115. pygmalion on April 6th, 2009 5:46 pm

naviomelo: I can’t find M’s audio either. I’m settling for the Twins broadcast. They make me miss Rick Rizzs. Somehow they missed the fact that Felix pitched in the WBC and made a remark about how few starts he had in Spring Training. Also, they seem to have a couple dozen microphones devoted to the crowd, so the cheers are much louder than the announcers.

  116. Jordan 'JWay' Gillis on April 6th, 2009 5:46 pm

  124. Sidi on April 6th, 2009 5:49 pm

    “Gets the job done…”

Yeah. If you don’t look at the run expectancy tables and see the difference between a runner on second, no outs and a runner on third with one out. Especially considering this is supposed to be the heart of the order…

  125. hark on April 6th, 2009 5:49 pm

Blowers is going on about how grounding out to second base to “move the runner up” is “just smart baseball” and valuable likea homerun from Junior. Mike, I liked you as a player, but shut up.

Felix threw to many fast balls, anytime it was a breaking ball they swung and missed, and he got Kubel to K on a curveball off one leg.

If he just gets his ankle ok, we’ll live, Woo Beltre didn’t get canned at home, YAY!

  130. NBarnes on April 6th, 2009 5:51 pm

Griffey == old and busted. Beltre and Lopez == new hotness.

  131. Bodhizefa on April 6th, 2009 5:52 pm

Contract year opposite field hitting Beltre is back!

  132. Sidi on April 6th, 2009 5:52 pm

themedia unlikely. Basically you’d need to have a feed directly from MLB and be willing to lose that license. That’s how they shut down all the radio station broadcasts while I was in high school, and rolled out their paid audio feed.

There is one other option, someone capturing a feed and rebroadcasting it to you (something like slingbox). While that’s possible, it pretty much has to be just an individual thing. otherwise the bandwidth requirements become too huge.

  133. ewdewald on April 6th, 2009 5:53 pm

Blowers is going on about how grounding out to second base to “move the runner up” is “just smart baseball” and valuable likea homerun from Junior. Mike, I liked you as a player, but shut up.

This is the whole mantra with Griffey. “I still know how to get the little things done in baseball” (loosely quoted)

well, aside from one caused by damn fine pitching.

I’m in AZ and subscribed to MLB Premium. Nothing but problems, but now I’m getting a crummy pic and OK audio. Can’t wait to get back to WA later this month and watch on HD big screen.

Maybe that’ll happen when Felix isn’t the beginning and end of our hopes and dreams.

  144. Steve T on April 6th, 2009 6:00 pm

You should’ve heard Blowers going on the other day about how it’s not the one and two guys on your roster who matter; it’s the 24th and 25th. At length he went on. Because it wasn’t Chase Utley or Ryan Howard who brought the title to Philadelphia; it was So Taguchi and Cole Hamels. Obviously. If WE’D had Taguchi instead of Bloomquist we would have won it all ourselves. Right.

  145. Jordan 'JWay' Gillis on April 6th, 2009 6:00 pm

Felix still relying on his fastball 3/4 of the time?

  155. robbbbbb on April 6th, 2009 6:09 pm

Adrian Beltre would like to provide a demonstration of the advantages of a plus defender. Thanks for your attention.

  156. Jordan 'JWay' Gillis on April 6th, 2009 6:10 pm

Lots and lots of fastballs. But Beltre just turned a rbi double into an our and an advanced runner.

  157. robbbbbb on April 6th, 2009 6:11 pm

Steve: According to fangraphs, Felix only throws his fastball about 60% of the time, and he’s been consistent about it for four years.

  166. Paul B on April 6th, 2009 6:15 pm

Felix threw 66% fastballs last year, which was a little higher than his previous seasons.

  167. Paul B on April 6th, 2009 6:16 pm

From what mlb.com says the gameday audio problem is a Kiro problem. They aren’t sending the audio feed so mlb cannot provide it. I wrote a nasty email to kiro (rarquette@973kiro.com) about it. The more people complain, the quicker they will be to fix whatever the problem is.

Not necessarily. Often the guy who screwed up isn’t available, or helpful to the situation…and it’s just someone trying to figure out what the hell is wrong stuck dealing with the fallout.

Ugh. One walk by the Ms. Patience, at the plate, please?!?

  272. hark on April 6th, 2009 7:27 pm

    Sidi,

I’m an unapologetic Morrow fanboy. I have been since he first came up…so I’m going to admit my bias. But I have great faith that he will be awesome.

  273. louder on April 6th, 2009 7:27 pm

Griffey’s ground out to second was one of the greatest moments in Mariner history to listen to these guys.

  274. Sidi on April 6th, 2009 7:28 pm

Ugh. One walk by the Ms. Patience, at the plate, please?!?

But not that many hits either. I’m fine with a lack of walks, if they can put most hits in the stands. Of course, that’s not going to be a regular thing.

  275. Sidi on April 6th, 2009 7:31 pm

hark no apologies needed. I’m not doubting Morrow, I’m just annoyed by the modern concept of the closer in general. Especially when it means using pitchers in a very inefficient manner.

Hell, if ESPN is going on and on about OPS this year…maybe they’ll realize the pure 9th inning closer is a bad idea within a decade. And guys will stop being suckered in by collecting saves.

  276. MsFanInAustin on April 6th, 2009 7:32 pm

I’m happy to hear Sims giving Beltre the respect he deserves.

  277. Go Felix on April 6th, 2009 7:33 pm

A friend of mind just called me and asked me what the score of the game was. I said 4-1. He said, “no, the basketball game”. I said, “what basketball game”?

Hahahaaa, I had no idea the NCAA Championship game was on. Go M’s!

  278. crazyray7391 on April 6th, 2009 7:33 pm

A walk!! It really is a new day and a new way.

  279. Paul B on April 6th, 2009 7:34 pm

Give Liriano a little credit, he pitched well.

  280. thebigp708 on April 6th, 2009 7:34 pm

    ohhhhhhhhhh

  281. G-Man on April 6th, 2009 7:35 pm

    All right, PR for Jr.

I see that as a tiny but signficant move.

  282. Rick L on April 6th, 2009 7:36 pm

The Twins must think Batista is coming in given all these pitching changes in the 9th.

  283. Jordan 'JWay' Gillis on April 6th, 2009 7:36 pm

Liriano did great, but he had two legs.

  284. hark on April 6th, 2009 7:36 pm

Is it wrong to be praying for an out so Morrow can record a save?

  285. Go Felix on April 6th, 2009 7:37 pm

    WOOOO HOOOO LOPEZ!!!!

  286. Sidi on April 6th, 2009 7:37 pm

That was a great job catching him by the bench. Really kind of cool that they were so willing to throw themselves into protecting a teammate.

  287. Breadbaker on April 6th, 2009 7:37 pm

Bring on Batista, it’s not a save situation. I’m sure he can give us one.

  288. finndawg on April 6th, 2009 7:37 pm

    thank you Jose!

  289. Go Felix on April 6th, 2009 7:38 pm

    Nice catch by that fan!

  290. Sports on a Schtick on April 6th, 2009 7:38 pm

    Attaboy Jose!

  291. cdowley on April 6th, 2009 7:38 pm

That’s two scary broken bats from Russell tonight… methinks he needs some new wood…

  292. hark on April 6th, 2009 7:39 pm

    Breadbaker,

    Don’t talk so soon. He’s up…

  293. juneau_fan on April 6th, 2009 7:39 pm

What is this thing called scoring?

    It’s been…so….long….*sniffle*

  294. pygmalion on April 6th, 2009 7:39 pm

Two walks. Two home runs. Good Felix.

I can live with these things.

  295. louder on April 6th, 2009 7:40 pm

Bastia, Oh, oh… The game will probalby wind up 6-4, with two men on base…

  296. Nettle on April 6th, 2009 7:40 pm

    Go Lopez!

And, again, wow, Felix is awesome. Great game all around, with a Griffey HR cherry on top.

    Now lock it down, Miggy.

  297. Paul B on April 6th, 2009 7:41 pm

I’m sure he can give us one.

    That’s what I was thinking.

    There’s only a 5 run lead.

  298. Mr. Egaas on April 6th, 2009 7:41 pm

Beluga Tits in, to make it interesting!

  299. cdowley on April 6th, 2009 7:41 pm

Schiesse, Miggy? And I was really enjoying this game…

  300. terry on April 6th, 2009 7:42 pm

Hey….RA Dickey is actually good for something…who knew?

  301. msb on April 6th, 2009 7:42 pm

Wouldn’t want Morrow to get some work in, being as he had limited ST innings and all….

  302. Axtell on April 6th, 2009 7:42 pm

Either the ball placement on ESPN’s gamecast is off or they’ve been calling strikes low all evening.

  303. JerBear on April 6th, 2009 7:43 pm

Wakamatsu: “We’d like to get Brandon his first save opportunity, but since we’re up 5 runs, we’re sending Batista in to sort of even things up a bit. Then we’ll send in Morrow.”

  304. Paul B on April 6th, 2009 7:45 pm

Sims said something about Silva throwing a party for the Twins players? What, they ate a bunch of double burgers so they couldn’t hit today?

  305. Paul B on April 6th, 2009 7:45 pm

Sims said something about Silva throwing a party for the Twins players? What, they ate a bunch of double burgers so they couldn’t hit today?

  306. hark on April 6th, 2009 7:46 pm

E-5…wow, don’t see that often from Beltre. Ouch.

  307. Rick L on April 6th, 2009 7:47 pm

Batista could well have been out of this inning.

  308. JerBear on April 6th, 2009 7:47 pm

The Twins can’t hit anyway. What he said, though, was that Silva threw a party at his house for all the Mariners. He lives there.

  309. finndawg on April 6th, 2009 7:48 pm

nice stru]ikeout! we needed that one!

  310. hark on April 6th, 2009 7:48 pm

    A win!

  311. finndawg on April 6th, 2009 7:48 pm

nice strikeout! we needed that one!

  312. Go Felix on April 6th, 2009 7:48 pm

    WE WIN!!!!!!!

  313. Paul B on April 6th, 2009 7:48 pm

Who is this pitcher, and what did they do with Batista? Survived an error by Beltre and a dropped foul by Lopez.

(don’t know why my last post was doubleposted, but it was talking about double burgers…)

  314. G-Man on April 6th, 2009 7:48 pm

They called it a hit, not E-5.

    M’s win!

  315. louder on April 6th, 2009 7:48 pm

Nice game, just like they drew iy up.

  316. smatbte51 on April 6th, 2009 7:48 pm

Wow if Batista can just attack the strike zone and throw his fastball and slider every night he might be alright.

  317. louder on April 6th, 2009 7:48 pm

Nice game, just like they drew it up.

  318. JerBear on April 6th, 2009 7:49 pm

Ahhh… and for the moment, everything is right with the world.

  319. cdowley on April 6th, 2009 7:50 pm

Either the ball placement on ESPN’s gamecast is off or they’ve been calling strikes low all evening.

Little bit of both. The ESPN Kzone thingy is always about 3-4 inches high IMO, but the ump has been calling strikes a touch lower than you normally see, at least to my eyes.

And a (mostly) uneventful mop-up by Miggy. Surprised? Yes. Glad? HELL YES!

May we have many more games like this. Very, very happy with the overall result.

  320. pgreyy on April 6th, 2009 7:50 pm

BREAK UP THE M’S, WE’RE UNBEATEN!!!

Small sample size, sure…but, bite me, IT’S BASEBALL…and we’ve got something to smile about in Seattle!

  321. kmsandrbs on April 6th, 2009 7:50 pm

    Happiness is: A Perfect Record!

    161 left to go … :-)

  322. Nettle on April 6th, 2009 7:52 pm

Sweet, Batista looked good with a big lead and a defense he can trust (bizarro plays notwithstanding). Great game!! Nothing to complain about tonight.

And thanks to UNC for making the NCAA such a blowout that I didn’t miss anything over there.

  323. TaeBoJackson on April 6th, 2009 7:52 pm

    1-0!

    Nice.

  324. SeabassP on April 6th, 2009 7:54 pm

Great win guys! Gotta question though, I am from Jersey, and I am using MLB.TV Platinum for the games (which worked like a charm after some issues early on) and it’s awesome, but I was wondering if there is any way I can get to see the postgame shows. Are they online or anything? Thanks for the help guys!

    Go M’s!

  325. pygmalion on April 6th, 2009 7:56 pm

Thanks also to UNC for helping to prevent Dave’s NCAA article in the WSJ a few weeks ago from being completely subject to the ridicule of MSU fans.

  326. hark on April 6th, 2009 7:56 pm

Win number 1! I’ll take it, especially if every win comes with a 5-run margin and a Griffey homerun.

  327. DLCheeZ on April 6th, 2009 8:04 pm

    2009 Mariners

    162-0
    11-0
    #1

See you all at the parade.

  328. nvn8vbryce on April 6th, 2009 8:18 pm

but I was wondering if there is any way I can get to see the postgame shows. Are they online or anything? Thanks for the help guys!

Sirius / XM carries the postgame feed of the home team for about 30 minutes, sometimes longer…

  329. Paul L on April 6th, 2009 8:19 pm

Turned on the game tonight and the first words to come out of the speakers were: No doubt about it.

    Seriously.

    Talk about a bittersweet moment.

  330. Steve T on April 6th, 2009 10:09 pm

My happiness over this win is tempered slightly by the fact that during the seventh inning my hot water heater decided to empty its contents all over the basement. Sigh….

  331. ppl on April 6th, 2009 10:09 pm

Since last year there were people ready to throw in the towel after three games, why not wave them after one win this year.

  332. joser on April 7th, 2009 5:00 pm

Since last year there were people ready to throw in the towel after three games, why not wave them after one win this year.

Better yet, donate them to Steve T, who apparently needs them to mop up his basement.

    Seriously.
    Talk about a bittersweet moment.

If you think about it, the odds of that are pretty good. Kind of like betting “seven” in craps, or maybe “red” in roulette.

    No doubt about it.
