Game 1, Felix versus Twins
DMZ · April 6, 2009 at 3:20 pm · Filed Under Mariners
Opening Day, Felix Day. 5:05. Lineups are out early and so here’s the game thread.
LF-L Chavez
CF-R Gutierrez
DH-R Sweeney
3B-R Beltre
RF-L Griffey
2B-R Lopez
1B-L Branyan
C-R Johjima
SS-R Betancourt
The Twins have some jerks. I don’t know that it’ll matter, what with Felix pitching.

Griffey in right. Ye Gods.
On AstroTurf!
RF……..Griffey? This is going to be a long
gameseasonAll I have got to say is:
GO M’s
I had a dream last night that Griffey grounded out weakly to SS off a power lefty to end the game. Weird.
I thought Baker said this was Griffey’s honorary opening day start in RF — not any indication that he’ll ever play there again. He’ll DH the next 2 games and then sit against the lefthander.
I’m still disappointed Yuni is starting, let alone on the team. And Sweeney batting third?
Whatever, win Mariners! Win!
Seriously, I don’t care about anything else. Clicking on Mariner blogs and seeing a game thread posted is like inhaling and suddenly noticing that the air contains oxygen again. I seriously don’t know how I survive the winter.
I second such a deduction.
I thirds that!!!
Hm, did McLaren whisper today’s starting lineups in Wakamatsu’s ear during nap time? So sad about Ichiro. Starting day just won’t be the same. I guess Mauer’s absence kind of evens things out, though.
Ah, Astroturf. I have fond memories of playing kiddie sporting events on that unnatural surface, such as the football game in which four opposing players slammed me into the ground. It was like landing on concrete, but with the benefits of rug burn.
First full day of baseball, and it’s over 70 degrees here in the NW!
Is it just me, or is that a god awful 1-2-3? Is there any way it shouldn’t be Beltre, Lopez, Griffey? Or if L-R alternating was important, maybe Chavez, Beltre, Branyan, Lopez, Griffey, Sweeney.
I guess I just don’t see why you’d give (arguably) the two weakest batters the most PAs…
Watching Griffey/Branyan looks helpless against the LHP Liriano is gonna be both painful yet somehow awesome.
Why is Lopez batting sixth? Weird.
If it was McLaren, Griffey would be leading off because he’s in for Ichiro, Lopez would be hitting 2nd because middle infielders hit 2nd, and Chavez would be hitting 3rd because he’s replacing Ibanez.
And Bloomquist would be playing CF.
Ichiro not playing kinda wrecks the whole dynamic of the lineup, but if we’re going with a sentimental RF spot for Griffey, why not put him in the 3 hole, too? Doesn’t that net double ego-assuasion points?
Anyway, Felix!
If Chavez and Gutierrez are the weakest batters on the team when a LHP is on the mound in a lineup that includes Junior, Branyan, Betancourt and Johjima, then this team is absolutely done for this season.
Hitting LHPs are one of the few things the Mariners should be able to do this year. With the exceptions of Junior and Branyan, this lineup isn’t a bad idea, as long as Gutierrez and Sweeney hit better than Johjima and Lopez.
Aren’t we all glad that we got rid of that aging, lumbering, singles-hitting former shell of an All-Star DH we had last year for Mike Swee-hey, wait a minute…
-sigh-
Nothing quite like opening day. The sun shines a bit brighter, the birds chirp a little chirpier, and everybody is in first place. This may be the ONLY day we see first place all year, so I shall revel in its spring fresh scent.
Go Felix.
I’d rather he be there than second. For whatever reason, whenever he hits second it seems like he tries to hit the ball on the ground on the right side rather than hitting with any power.
Thank god Felix is pitching… ‘Cause this is going to be a lowwwwww-scoring game.
However – it’s Opening Day, and besides Christmas this is arguably the best calendar day of the year
Anybody got a video link?
(I didn’t know such things existed until I started following the Blazers, and hanging out at Blazers Edge. Now I watch almost every Blazers game via feeds. I’m really hoping the same thing works for Mariners games. Help me out here.)
if you want horrible… look at the Twins lineup… i’m thinking a 3-1 game.
Seeing the first regular season game thread of the year put a huge smile on my face.
Opening Day is my favorite day of the year, especially when it’s blue skies and 75 degrees out.
I think Balentien could be DH-ing to get another RH bat in the lineup.
Branyan could come off the bench for the eventual RH reliever that will replace Liriano.
My theory is they want to ceremoniously give Branyan the nod as the team’s starting 1B this season. I think that “ceremony” aspect is often a factor on opening day, a-la-Griffey.
Happy Opening Day. Adam Jones has now reached base in all five of his PAs
Balentien should be in right, Griffey DH’ing and Sweeney at first.
Arguably even Tui should be DH’ing really.
Give Branyan the Home Opener.
You don’t have to toss out all the nods in one day.
Truth is we are working with very little in the on the bench.
This line-up looks pretty weak. I hope Beltre has a big day.
Go King Felix!
Ahhhh, a game thread on USSMariner again. To quote President Gerald Ford, “Our long national nightmare (the baseball offseason) is over.” (Now if only I didn’t have a worthless council meeting to cover and several hours after that, things would be perfect.)
To watch baseball on the web, you have to subscribe via MLB. In other words, $.
Ah, there’s Geo Sherrill pitching the 9th with a 5-run lead. JJ pitched a 8th-inning shutout for the Mets.
Go M’s. Life is good.
If there was any decent seats left in the Metrodome, I’d be there =/ But Felix deserves better than nose bleeds….
This bench is so much better than what the M’s had last year it isn’t even close.
Yeah, watching the Orioles is a bit painful. If Jones tearing it up with a bat and in the field isn’t enough, George Sherrill is one out away from a save.
*Technically it’s not a save because they’re up 5*
But still.
They just announced all the Mariner players, and the only one who got any sort of audible response from the crowd was Junior.
No – Sweeney and Gutierrez got boo’d a bit.
But that makes sense ’cause of the AL Central connections I guess.
Paul B-
I mean lacking Ichiro, and not bringing up an extra outfielder.
Yes much better shape than last year.
Woah, that chick singing the anthem is pretty hot.
Holy crap, is it suddenly the season again?
This is the year that my mental powers are going to fix Yuni, btw.
Man…. My FSN HD is offline. WTF. I’m bumming.
Text poll, almost half the respondents think Junior will have a bigger impact this year than Wakamatsu, Gutierrez, or Branyan.
I suppose half of the fans don’t know who those three people are.
All I’ve gotten at work today is “I’ve never even heard of the guy leading off.”
Great! Opening Day and I can watch all the Mariner games. Had to move from Washington to L.A., so I bought MLB Extra Innings, and now can enjoy the misery that is the M’s, every-freaking-night!
Hey, MLB.tv, feel free to start showing the broadcast at any time now…
Like a dog??
Yay! Blowers!
Go M’s, go Felix!
Dave all you’re missing is a Carl Pohlad memorial presentation…
He was great for the Twins, but not well liked by most local fans around here. =/ The whole c
Gameday says, “Delayed: Ceremony.” Do they roll out the tarp for that?
weird my post cut off,
Fans around here in Sioux Falls, SD, are still upset about the contraction proposition…
No some dude is speaking, they just brought Tom Kelly onto the field, yawn. Hopefully Liriano goes cold. He comes The Pohlad sons… La lalalalaaaa
Endy Chavez needs to knock the first pitch into the baggy.
The young woman singing the intro song for the Mariner coverage, with the fake wind blowing her hair around. Should I know who she is? (I’m a dinosaur when it comes to popular culture, so never know if someone is famous or not).
OMG! Whose the chick singing? Awful..
I am not sure either, but it is a pretty awful song. At least that means the game is starting finally!!
That intro was pretty horrible. Even for FSNW.
It was Angie Arlotti bad.
“There are some who said this day would never come… What are they to say now?”
WOOOOO!!!!
Oops, guess it’s Mentink now.
I can’t wait for Target field to open, looks nice.
“Twin Killer” Adrian Beltre.
I hope so…
Btw – it’s worth reading her wikipedia entry
OMG! HERE WE GO!
That’s pretty cool that they’re hanging Ichiro’s jersey in the dugout. Silva must be
pissedhungry!Well, THIS season is over.
Ground out? WTF?
(Seriously, the M’s will only be a disappointment to me when they lose their 82nd game…up until then, YAYYY!!!!)
I’m pretty cynical but…the Wikipedia entry is just wrong.
I still don’t understand this lineup.
Hmmm… I’m not used to 3-1 counts.. At least Franklin didn’t swing at a ball (at least as far as I could tell w/o HD tv.)
Not even close to going around!
I’m enjoying the upgrade at DH. Turbo would have found a way to GIDP there.
That appears to be true, but does anyone know why? I mean, I’m sure the NBA doesn’t love free video links popping up at atdhe.net and justin.tv, but they’re still there. Is MLB super vigilant about shutting things down? And I can almost always find a Turkish or whatever link. I’m surprised there are no Japanese links about.
Bleh. What can Mike Sweeney say now? That’s how you strike out on a check swing! Keep your heads up boys, we can do this!
Positive Clubhouse Influence 0/1 1K (0 positive influence?)
I’m drunk.
Not a good start. It’ll be sweet when Grif get up though…
MLB Gameday says Sweeney hates to face: Slider, loves to face: Slider. Hmm.
oh Felix
What’s with the new MLB gameday audio? I can’t seem to get the M’s broadcast. Is anyone else experiencing this?
Gameday says Felix threw five straight fastballs.
Great…
man…
I wonder why Span didn’t go to third there. Giving Griffey a little too much respect.
Raul would have had that foul ball!
Hit to Griffey. Catchable?
I hate the new 80′s hard rock meets surplus 90′s Grunge FSN bumper music. Kind of sounds like Bush with more hairspray.
Steve T:
No.
Span grew up loving Griffey. Like 90% of the world, he hasn’t paid attention to him in the last 6 years.
Get some Cuddyer! Get some!
DIRTY PITCH!!
K!
I would’ve ran my ass off if I were Span. All the way home.
Un’effing’hittable.
Just throw that 81 times.
Wow, Felix just got a call. Woo….
I hate the new 80’s hard rock meets surplus 90’s Grunge FSN bumper music. Kind of sounds like Bush with more hairspray.
That would be…I just…you know, you just made a crappy start to the game much more pleasant. I’m resisting making any of the responses running through my head.
Close play at first.
He was safe. Thanks, blue!
Felix: fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, slider, fastball, fastball, fastball, slider, fastball, change, fastball, curve.
Felix is limping.. WTF
Please don’t be hurt.
If the carpet breaks Felix instead of Griffey…
DAMN!!!!!!!
…remain positive…remain positive…
I promised myself I wouldn’t cry.
Oh crap oh crap oh crap…
Ummm, please no.
That just snapped. Man…..
Fuck.
Miguel Batista time?
What a start to the season. Gotta love Mariner baseball!
…remain positive…remain positive…
I promised myself I wouldn’t cry.
Injury delay? What happened? I’m at work…uh..working.
Thank you, baseball gods…
and Johjima!
Dear Felix,
Less fastballs, more careful with that ankle.
Are you fucking kidding me?
Jesus, what a nice pitch. Tape him up, ice him, and get him back out there!
kk!
Zaloumis!
Felix doesn’t look too good to me, take him out now…
Where the F is my tequilla?!?!?!
Nice curveball to get Kubel. Seems like that pitch really works for Felix, has anybody talked about having him use it more?
naviomelo: I can’t find M’s audio either. I’m settling for the Twins broadcast. They make me miss Rick Rizzs. Somehow they missed the fact that Felix pitched in the WBC and made a remark about how few starts he had in Spring Training. Also, they seem to have a couple dozen microphones devoted to the crowd, so the cheers are much louder than the announcers.
Felix gets the K with 1 leg. Give him a wheel chair. Let him pitch.
Felix twisted his ankle going for a ball; trainers came out and he hopped around for a few minutes, but finished the inning.
Please Flying Spaghetti Monster…this is my daughter’s first year really watching baseball. She’s glued to the screen right now. If you see fit to destroy both Ichiro and Felix, well, it’s time to look to new carbohydrate entities.
So, injury aside, how’d he do, Dave? Were his pitches any more mixed than usual?
Let’s get this party started.
Obligatory stat-ignorant fanboy post:
Griffey!!!! =D
Beltre blasted that ball.
Griffey playing twins ball, advancing runners! Team PLAYER!
“Gets the job done…”
Yeah. If you don’t look at the run expectancy tables and see the difference between a runner on second, no outs and a runner on third with one out. Especially considering this is supposed to be the heart of the order…
Blowers is going on about how grounding out to second base to “move the runner up” is “just smart baseball” and valuable likea homerun from Junior. Mike, I liked you as a player, but shut up.
Anybody know where I can get free audio (video would be better, but..) online?
Wooo hooo!!! We’re actually leading!!
I don’t see why you catch that ball but I’ll take the sac fly.
Felix threw to many fast balls, anytime it was a breaking ball they swung and missed, and he got Kubel to K on a curveball off one leg.
If he just gets his ankle ok, we’ll live, Woo Beltre didn’t get canned at home, YAY!
Griffey == old and busted. Beltre and Lopez == new hotness.
Contract year opposite field hitting Beltre is back!
themedia unlikely. Basically you’d need to have a feed directly from MLB and be willing to lose that license. That’s how they shut down all the radio station broadcasts while I was in high school, and rolled out their paid audio feed.
There is one other option, someone capturing a feed and rebroadcasting it to you (something like slingbox). While that’s possible, it pretty much has to be just an individual thing. otherwise the bandwidth requirements become too huge.
This is the whole mantra with Griffey. “I still know how to get the little things done in baseball” (loosely quoted)
Okay, I can breath again….
Link to game:
New here…Hello All! Nice to see we’re first in the division, and winning the game! I’ll take what i can get!
Great second from Felix.
That was an awesome pitch. K
Felix is awesome!
Wow, that K was classic Felix.
Just once, I’d like a Felix start that didn’t have a “heart in your throat” moment.
well, aside from one caused by damn fine pitching.
I’m in AZ and subscribed to MLB Premium. Nothing but problems, but now I’m getting a crummy pic and OK audio. Can’t wait to get back to WA later this month and watch on HD big screen.
Maybe that’ll happen when Felix isn’t the beginning and end of our hopes and dreams.
You should’ve heard Blowers going on the other day about how it’s not the one and two guys on your roster who matter; it’s the 24th and 25th. At length he went on. Because it wasn’t Chase Utley or Ryan Howard who brought the title to Philadelphia; it was So Taguchi and Cole Hamels. Obviously. If WE’D had Taguchi instead of Bloomquist we would have won it all ourselves. Right.
2 pitches for Yuni. Better than just 1 I suppose.
Did Neihaus just give away the trivia answer?
The MLB services are always oversaturated opening day/week. From reports they’re getting better, that first year of mlb.tv sounded like a disaster.
Yes. He always answers it if he knows the answer.
Ichiro commercial…painful.
Wow, that frozen river is an ad for the metrodome there…
Francisco is looking very sharp. Nice comeback for him.
Fastballs…. Ugh… Just throw some bendy pitches.
Wow, that frozen river is an ad for the metrodome there…
It doesn’t look like the game would have been canceled. Unlike other cities today…
Felix still relying on his fastball 3/4 of the time?
Adrian Beltre would like to provide a demonstration of the advantages of a plus defender. Thanks for your attention.
Lots and lots of fastballs. But Beltre just turned a rbi double into an our and an advanced runner.
Steve: According to fangraphs, Felix only throws his fastball about 60% of the time, and he’s been consistent about it for four years.
NICE K!
Felix is good.
Felix is doing just fine.
A few too many pitches, but not bad.
so, if we go into the 9th inning, 1 – 0, who are we sending out to close?
Felix doesn’t look like he’s even trying. In a good way.
too many pitches??? 45 in 3 innings for a first start of the year?
hmmm..
Oh, God…Blowers and Sims going back to praising Griffey for grounding out to second. This is obnoxious.
Quit talking about Griffey “doing what he has to” in his opening at bat! He didn’t go out there to ground out…
Felix threw 66% fastballs last year, which was a little higher than his previous seasons.
Yes, you would like it if he could get through more than 5 innings.
Are you sure Felix through a curve? My favorite pitch he throws. If he will throw the damn thing.
Does anyone know why Sweeney is hitting 3rd? He’s definitely not as good as some other hitters we have, like Lopez.
Mariner hitters looking mighty weak right now.
Dear Mr. Beltre,
We love you. We think you’re an awesome defender. But for the love of Pete, would you QUIT POINTING TO FIRST BASE WHEN YOU CHECK YOUR SWING.
Thank you.
Let’s go Adrian!
ugh… look what I found…
sodomojo_1,
Not to call Wak “Grover” or any other cruel epithet, but I have a sinking feeling in my stomach that it’s because that’s where a DH is “supposed to hit”, not lower in the order.
yeah hark, I’m afraid of that too
Guys, its because Sweeney is a Twins’ Killer.
How many curves has he thrown at this point? I remember a couple in the dirt, but not many at all…
Liriano tends to do that, though…
First Sims laugh of the day: “Griffey, at 39, still does a great job covering out there…”
Covering what?
I meant this game. At the time I wrote it, he was at 30 FB, 10 other — that’s 3/4.
Beltre came to play today…great on D
Covering what? Dylan. Because everyone does a good job covering Dylan.
You should hear his version of “Only a Pawn in Their Game.”
Really? I love when he does that. Makes me laugh every time.
GRIFFEY!!!!!!!!!!!
Griffey!!!!!!
JUNIOR!!!
Wow…and they were actually foreshadowing it!
Wow. Just wow.
YES!
I sense that the server might crash now…
Holy….
GRIFFEY!!!!
GRIFFEY!!!!
GRIFFEY!!!!
GRIFFEY!!!!
GRIFFEY!!!!
GRIFFEY!!!!
GRIFFEY!!!!
That junior guy can hit.
hey! Old man!
MY OH MY!!!
Well, this certainly isn’t going to quiet the excessive fanboyism, is it?
Fine with me…
If the worst thing about this year is Griffey exceeding expectations, its a sacrifice I think we’re all willing to make.
#400 for Griffey with the M’s! Woohoo!!!
Junior!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I dont care that he’s old and slow, there is something special about seeing Junior hit a HR on Opening Day!!!
Great, Griffey still has the beautiful swing at times.
Junior’s going to play 120 games in the field. Just watch.
Fastballs or no, Felix has by my count gotten a K or a ground ball from 11 of 16 batters. Works for me.
Junior!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I dont care that he’s old and slow, there is something special about seeing Junior hit a HR on Opening Day!!!
*Parties like it’s 1997*
Uggh. Ichiro would have got that one. With a broken leg.
uh oh, looks like the Twins have figured it out. Hit it to right field.
And Junior is the proximate cause for the first USSM crash of the year. Nice.
Apparently, The Kid’s still got a little life in his swing.
It’s almost like they’re hitting the ball at Griffey, just to show him up for that homerun.
Or else, the baseball gods have a really good sense of humor. I’ll vote for that one.
IWHHT.
THE KID! Man THAT was a flash back… looked like 1995! Except now his gut matches his butt a little better.
This bottom fifth is getting painful very fast…
Yessss. Phew. Felix!!
Phantom tag there on second…by a good meter.
DP! Truly pitcher’s best friend…
As fast as Felix can work himself into trouble, he can work himself right back out.
I almost forgot how much I hate the sound of Sims’ voice.
Ok, watched the replay. He was probably only a foot off the bag on the double play. I know it’s just accepted that you don’t really have to touch second, but it still bugs me.
How can you lose a groundball in the lights?
Sidi,
I agree with you. I yell at my TV when a phantom tag is that noticeable, and it can often be a big difference in a game (it certainly was here).
WOOO HOOOO!!! GUTIERREZ!!!
Something giddy about seeing Griffey hit a HR again in a M’s UNO
I like this Gutierrez kid. I think he’ll work out okay.
ssssswwwwwwwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeeeetttttttttttttt
Gutierrez!
Wow, nice job! Good way to start the year.
so this is what offense looks like….
Gotta love these sluggers we picked up this offseason.
That might be the most catchable HR I’ve ever seen.
small ball and then a homer, a good omen for some offense
Offense….Hmm? Sounds kinda familiar.
Gutierrez – sure he can hit, but can he play D?
¡Cuadrangular!
FRANKBLAST!
Felix should just stop fielding.
And a first baseman that has range! Yowser!
Hello Felix,
Please stop scaring us like that.
Thanks,
Gotta love it when the camera guy can’t even follow the hit…but your third baseman looks like he took a nap between the hit and scoop. And again before throwing it to first.
Slighty belated, but still…
GUTI!!!!!!!!
Some scares from King tonight, both ankle and command-wise, but a solid effort all in all from him so far.
Griffey pulling one out in his first game back is nothing short of exciting. My ex can attest to the fact that I was jumping up and down in my living room like a little kid
That was a bad pitch to go after, Jose.
From what mlb.com says the gameday audio problem is a Kiro problem. They aren’t sending the audio feed so mlb cannot provide it. I wrote a nasty email to kiro (rarquette@973kiro.com) about it. The more people complain, the quicker they will be to fix whatever the problem is.
The more people complain, the quicker they will be to fix whatever the problem is.
Not necessarily. Often the guy who screwed up isn’t available, or helpful to the situation…and it’s just someone trying to figure out what the hell is wrong stuck dealing with the fallout.
This morning I was the guy on the other end of that.
Felix into the 7th with 1 run…this is amazing.
Nice quick inning. GO FELIX!!
By the way, that home run by Griffey ties him with Frank Robinson for the most home runs hit on opening day. I’m not sure if they mentioned that on the broadcast since I’m stuck watching the box score.
It sure is nice watching outfielders coast to and camp under fly balls.
Or what is to be expected… Might be less with Ichiro in RF instead of Griffey =/
It sure is nice watching outfielders coast to and camp under fly balls.
2/3 ain’t bad…
Whoops, meant to say that Griffey’s home run broke the opening day record. Guess he must’ve tied it a couple years back or something.
Angels just scored. Bah.
Sims did.
I like this outfield defense stuff.
That second baseman for the Twins is getting beat up today.
Good good, yes, good.
C’mon Yuni…. Cedeno is just chomping at the bit here.
hopefully they can hang on got to go to work
And yuck.
Nevermind, I was right the first time. Geez, Baseball-Almanac updates their website fast. I figured when it said that he was tied that it meant prior to today. Oh well, hopefully he gets another AB and knocks one over the baggy.
hopefully they can hang on got to go to work
Well, you know we don’t have an “elite closer” this year. And everyone knows it’s impossible to get those last three outs unless you have the special mindset (and maybe the magic underwear).
Why is Felix going back out for the 8th inning? That’s not good.
Oh boy, a chance to see Miguel Batista
we have no bullpen??
HA! AWESOME!
We have Morrow, and as much as I wish he were starting, he proved to be a very capable closer in his opportunities.
Did Sims just saying Batista was warming up to pitch the 9th. I sure hope not.
Felix to Morrow, this is a good day.
Michael Cuddyer is going to have nightmares that involve the number 34 for a long, long time.
Lets go brandon! cha cha… cha..cha..chaa Lets go Brandon!
complete game anyone? or bring in Morrow?
mariner pitching is making it look easy, but what is up with Wak saying he’s going to play everyone? Just play the best guys and get off to a good start.
well… 4-1… guess i wasn’t far off… hell if anybody in here could have predicted Griffey hitting a homer off of Liriano. That’s nucking futs.
Griffey, the anti-sample size in ’09!
no, no, no, no… the Twins are just that bad offensively. Morneau might be the only batter who would start on the Mariners… maybe Cuddyer when he’s on.
hark I guess. He’s still not a “proven closer” in the terms of people who actually believe it’s a special thing…but he will be a great reliever. I really hope they look at his talent and experience and are very willing to put him out in the 8th when needed. Or even the 7th. Go for it!
Great start by Felix, now if Morrow can just hold it…
surprise homers + lights out Felix= GOOD STUFF
Ugh. One walk by the Ms. Patience, at the plate, please?!?
Sidi,
I’m an unapologetic Morrow fanboy. I have been since he first came up…so I’m going to admit my bias. But I have great faith that he will be awesome.
Griffey’s ground out to second was one of the greatest moments in Mariner history to listen to these guys.
Ugh. One walk by the Ms. Patience, at the plate, please?!?
But not that many hits either. I’m fine with a lack of walks, if they can put most hits in the stands. Of course, that’s not going to be a regular thing.
hark no apologies needed. I’m not doubting Morrow, I’m just annoyed by the modern concept of the closer in general. Especially when it means using pitchers in a very inefficient manner.
Hell, if ESPN is going on and on about OPS this year…maybe they’ll realize the pure 9th inning closer is a bad idea within a decade. And guys will stop being suckered in by collecting saves.
I’m happy to hear Sims giving Beltre the respect he deserves.
A friend of mind just called me and asked me what the score of the game was. I said 4-1. He said, “no, the basketball game”. I said, “what basketball game”?
Hahahaaa, I had no idea the NCAA Championship game was on. Go M’s!
A walk!! It really is a new day and a new way.
Give Liriano a little credit, he pitched well.
ohhhhhhhhhh
All right, PR for Jr.
I see that as a tiny but signficant move.
The Twins must think Batista is coming in given all these pitching changes in the 9th.
Liriano did great, but he had two legs.
Is it wrong to be praying for an out so Morrow can record a save?
WOOOO HOOOO LOPEZ!!!!
That was a great job catching him by the bench. Really kind of cool that they were so willing to throw themselves into protecting a teammate.
Bring on Batista, it’s not a save situation. I’m sure he can give us one.
thank you Jose!
Nice catch by that fan!
Attaboy Jose!
That’s two scary broken bats from Russell tonight… methinks he needs some new wood…
Breadbaker,
Don’t talk so soon. He’s up…
What is this thing called scoring?
It’s been…so….long….*sniffle*
Two walks. Two home runs. Good Felix.
I can live with these things.
Bastia, Oh, oh… The game will probalby wind up 6-4, with two men on base…
Go Lopez!
And, again, wow, Felix is awesome. Great game all around, with a Griffey HR cherry on top.
Now lock it down, Miggy.
That’s what I was thinking.
There’s only a 5 run lead.
Beluga Tits in, to make it interesting!
Schiesse, Miggy? And I was really enjoying this game…
Hey….RA Dickey is actually good for something…who knew?
Wouldn’t want Morrow to get some work in, being as he had limited ST innings and all….
Either the ball placement on ESPN’s gamecast is off or they’ve been calling strikes low all evening.
Wakamatsu: “We’d like to get Brandon his first save opportunity, but since we’re up 5 runs, we’re sending Batista in to sort of even things up a bit. Then we’ll send in Morrow.”
Sims said something about Silva throwing a party for the Twins players? What, they ate a bunch of double burgers so they couldn’t hit today?
Sims said something about Silva throwing a party for the Twins players? What, they ate a bunch of double burgers so they couldn’t hit today?
E-5…wow, don’t see that often from Beltre. Ouch.
Batista could well have been out of this inning.
The Twins can’t hit anyway. What he said, though, was that Silva threw a party at his house for all the Mariners. He lives there.
nice stru]ikeout! we needed that one!
A win!
nice strikeout! we needed that one!
WE WIN!!!!!!!
Who is this pitcher, and what did they do with Batista? Survived an error by Beltre and a dropped foul by Lopez.
(don’t know why my last post was doubleposted, but it was talking about double burgers…)
They called it a hit, not E-5.
M’s win!
Nice game, just like they drew iy up.
Wow if Batista can just attack the strike zone and throw his fastball and slider every night he might be alright.
Nice game, just like they drew it up.
Ahhh… and for the moment, everything is right with the world.
Little bit of both. The ESPN Kzone thingy is always about 3-4 inches high IMO, but the ump has been calling strikes a touch lower than you normally see, at least to my eyes.
And a (mostly) uneventful mop-up by Miggy. Surprised? Yes. Glad? HELL YES!
May we have many more games like this. Very, very happy with the overall result.
BREAK UP THE M’S, WE’RE UNBEATEN!!!
Small sample size, sure…but, bite me, IT’S BASEBALL…and we’ve got something to smile about in Seattle!
Happiness is: A Perfect Record!
161 left to go …
Sweet, Batista looked good with a big lead and a defense he can trust (bizarro plays notwithstanding). Great game!! Nothing to complain about tonight.
And thanks to UNC for making the NCAA such a blowout that I didn’t miss anything over there.
1-0!
Nice.
Great win guys! Gotta question though, I am from Jersey, and I am using MLB.TV Platinum for the games (which worked like a charm after some issues early on) and it’s awesome, but I was wondering if there is any way I can get to see the postgame shows. Are they online or anything? Thanks for the help guys!
Go M’s!
Thanks also to UNC for helping to prevent Dave’s NCAA article in the WSJ a few weeks ago from being completely subject to the ridicule of MSU fans.
Win number 1! I’ll take it, especially if every win comes with a 5-run margin and a Griffey homerun.

See you all at the parade.
Sirius / XM carries the postgame feed of the home team for about 30 minutes, sometimes longer…
Turned on the game tonight and the first words to come out of the speakers were: No doubt about it.
Seriously.
Talk about a bittersweet moment.
My happiness over this win is tempered slightly by the fact that during the seventh inning my hot water heater decided to empty its contents all over the basement. Sigh….
Since last year there were people ready to throw in the towel after three games, why not wave them after one win this year.
Better yet, donate them to Steve T, who apparently needs them to mop up his basement.
If you think about it, the odds of that are pretty good. Kind of like betting “seven” in craps, or maybe “red” in roulette.
No doubt about it.
