I’m interested in your opinion on slotting Griffey in the 3 hole. Do you like him there or would you put him somewhere else?

  2. themedia on April 18th, 2009 5:25 pm

    Sweeney, 1B (seriously?)

I’m guessing Branyan’s a little banged up after the game yesterday. I would have gone with Lopez at 1B and Cedeno at 2B, but…’In Wak we trust.’

  3. Dave on April 18th, 2009 5:34 pm

Griffey at the three hole is fine. Sweeney at the five hole against a righthander is not fine.

  4. Go Felix on April 18th, 2009 5:52 pm

Sweeney makes my blood boil. He is slowly becoming Vidro 2.0 in my mind.

  5. RITTEM1 on April 18th, 2009 6:03 pm

Sweeney makes my blood boil. He is slowly becoming Vidro 2.0 in my mind.

at least we aren’t paying him much (relatively). I am surprised there hasn’t been much push to have Griffey play some first base. Wouldn’t he have better range than Sweeney?

  6. joser on April 18th, 2009 6:12 pm

Interestingly, Griffey came into this season holding the record for most games batting 3rd, so he sets a record with very game he starts in that lineup spot.

  7. joser on April 18th, 2009 6:17 pm

So did anyone tune into the Fox Saturday game? I’m guessing they weren’t expecting that outcome (and all the viewers who undoubtedly tuned out early) when they were putting that one on the schedule. I tuned in to get a glimpse of the new stadium, and stayed for the Schadenfreude. And all the RBIs by former M’s.

    New stadium: $1.5 Billion
    Offseaon player acquisitions: $424 Million
Getting blown out 22-4 by the last-place team in the AL? Priceless

  8. Go Felix on April 18th, 2009 6:22 pm

    Nice pitch sequence from Bedard.

  9. Flowin on April 18th, 2009 6:23 pm

The (old, tired, overrated, and washup) Angels are getting pounded again tonight.

Winning the division is looking more and more doable every night.

  10. themedia on April 18th, 2009 6:23 pm

Is it just me, or is Cabrera’s size getting kind of suspicious? The guy has nearly doubled in size since his days in Florida.

  11. juneau_fan on April 18th, 2009 6:25 pm

“The AL West is becoming more wide open, with each fallen Angel.”

    You poet, Dave.

  12. Flowin on April 18th, 2009 6:25 pm

it’s not just you, themedia. ;)

  13. Go Felix on April 18th, 2009 6:25 pm

Is it just me, or is Cabrera’s size getting kind of suspicious? The guy has nearly doubled in size since his days in Florida.

He’s getting fat. I don’t think it has anything to do with what you’re implying. Also, he’s 26…his metabolism might have slowed down since he was 19 and new in the league.

  14. juneau_fan on April 18th, 2009 6:25 pm

I’d be suspicious, themedia, if the growth was across the chest and not the spare tire area.

  15. msb on April 18th, 2009 6:27 pm

what I noticed last night was that in person he didn’t look any where as large.

  16. Go Felix on April 18th, 2009 6:27 pm

Bedard’s curveball is awesome to watch.

  17. UpOrDownMsFan on April 18th, 2009 6:30 pm

The Angels start to this season is honestly helping put last year in perspective as an M’s fan– down John Lackey, Kelvim Escobar and Ervin Santana, Nick Adenhart dies, a fan dies in the stands, Vlad is out for probably 8 or more weeks, major meltdown in Minnesota that made Brandon’s collapse seem minor… I love the way the American League West is taking shape, but honestly feel sorry for the Angels (and I NEVER thought I’d ever say that- period).

  18. Flowin on April 18th, 2009 6:32 pm

I almost feel sorry for the Angels too, but then I remember the last 5 years or so of Angel dominance.

  19. UpOrDownMsFan on April 18th, 2009 6:36 pm

I swear, this isn’t the same Chavez I spent the winter watching in highlight reels… He’s “Ichiro Light”, a serious sparkplug. Quickly becoming one of my fave Mariners of late.

  20. juneau_fan on April 18th, 2009 6:38 pm

Is it me, or does someone try to steal third at least once a game?

  21. UpOrDownMsFan on April 18th, 2009 6:38 pm

    Flowin-
Okay, so, to be honest, I imagined what it might be like to feel sorry for the Angels, but yeah, I couldn’t actually do it.

    The DH
    $9.00 Ballpark beers
    All the broken bats shattering

  23. joser on April 18th, 2009 6:40 pm

And Oakland, after a great performance from their bullpen, spit the bit and gave up a walk-off homer to Overbay and the game to the Blue Jays.

The (old, tired, overrated, and washup) Angels are getting pounded again tonight.

I hate to be giving ideas to our rivals, but….

Arte Moreno should be on the phone with a $5M one-year offer to Pedro Martinez (which is apparently what Pedro is holding out for). At this point, what do they have lose? In the worst case, they have one more guy on the DL.

And with Vlad MIA, they need to find some more offense. The easiest thing might be to bring up that Brandon Wood kid from the minors and hope he continues to produce, though that means they have to juggle other guys because he’s not an outfielder.

It’s going to a long season for those guys.

  24. Go Felix on April 18th, 2009 6:40 pm

    BELTRE!!!! HOLY BALLS!!!!

  25. UpOrDownMsFan on April 18th, 2009 6:40 pm

    (Jaw drop) Beltre!

  26. Willmore2000 on April 18th, 2009 6:40 pm

    Give that kid a contract!

  27. MattThompson on April 18th, 2009 6:40 pm

    Adrian Beltre makes me smile.

    C’mon Blowers, you’re halfway there……

  29. Paul B on April 18th, 2009 6:42 pm

Do any of you watch the M’s on The Dish? If so, are you having the problem that Directv is having where they play commercials in the middle of innings? For example, I completely missed Griffey’s at bat in the first inning.

  30. joser on April 18th, 2009 6:42 pm

what I noticed last night was that in person he didn’t look any where as large.

If you’re watching the SD (4:3) digital feed on an HD (16:9) set, everybody looks wider. Silva overflows the edges of the screen.

  31. juneau_fan on April 18th, 2009 6:46 pm

Paul D, I don’t have The Dish, but I read every game thread.

    Yes.

  32. Paul B on April 18th, 2009 6:53 pm

I know Wak likes Sweeney. But I’d have to think that if he is still hitting .250 with no power in May or June, he’d have to think about letting him go.

  33. themedia on April 18th, 2009 6:59 pm

I’m sorry, but the guy’s simply huge. I don’t think it’s an illusion.

  34. Go Felix on April 18th, 2009 7:00 pm

Bedard is making Cabrera look foolish.

  35. naviomelo on April 18th, 2009 7:00 pm

Bedard with 4 strikeouts, all looking.

  36. scott19 on April 18th, 2009 7:02 pm

Arte Moreno should be on the phone with a $5M one-year offer to Pedro Martinez (which is apparently what Pedro is holding out for).

Well, the Daleks that run Faux Sports should love that, since they’ll be able to give the Angels even more Saturday afternoon games…

Meanwhile, Rizzs just mentioned how the Tigers have only won 71 and 72 games the past couple of years. Gee, you were only off by 3-4 years there, Rizzy.

Maybe he’s on the Dimitri Young diet?

  41. hendu72 on April 18th, 2009 7:10 pm

I don’t think the weight that Cabrera has gained is what you would call “good weight”

  42. Flowin on April 18th, 2009 7:10 pm

Jackson is looking strong tonight… and his pitch count is at 38 through three innings (compared with 56 for Bedard). M’s have to have longer ABs against Jackson if they want to get him out of the game.

  43. Go Felix on April 18th, 2009 7:11 pm

Bedard’s new nickname “Made you look”

    Thanks for writing.

We insert our announcements based on the schedules we receive from the program providers. On rare occasions, channel programming schedules change and we may not always receive notification in time to adjust our announcement.

In this particular case, FSN Northwest channel 687 likely did not give us timely or accurate information. I am forwarding your email on for research.

It’s very good to see Bedard constantly hitting 93 on the gun. Last year it seemed like he was more in the 90-91 range

  46. Go Felix on April 18th, 2009 7:16 pm

Another nice inning for Bedard. Ladies and Gentlemen, please notice this fantastic pitcher available for trade. He’s healthy, hitting 94 on the gun, and ready to make your team reach the playoffs. We’ll even throw in Silva!

I hope you write back to point out to them that, as this is a live sporting event, their explanation makes absolutely no sense.

  49. Tv Producer on April 18th, 2009 7:18 pm

    Paul,

Can you post the email you sent ?

  50. Go Felix on April 18th, 2009 7:21 pm

The defense on both sides is ready to play today. DEFENSE DUEL!!!

  51. Go Felix on April 18th, 2009 7:23 pm

    Bedard, made you look

  52. Go Felix on April 18th, 2009 7:24 pm

That would have been a double last year.

  53. Paul B on April 18th, 2009 7:25 pm

I did reply via email and try to explain to them that baseball games do not happen on a clock schedule, and that traditionally TV commercials are done during breaks in the action such as innings or pitching changes. I felt I had to explain it very carefully.

I am on the phone with a person who is trying to write the complaint up, they all say this is the first time they have heard of this. I think it has happened 3 times tonight so far, which I am explaining to the rep right now.

Here is the first email I sent them:

    04/16/2009 07:12 PM
This is the third Seattle Mariner game, broadcast on FSN channel 687, where Directv has cut to commercial right in the middle of the action. It happens during pitches, right during innings. I know it is Directv doing it, and not Fox, because other people watching the game on other providers do not have this problem, plus the commercials are Directv specific. This is incredibly annoying and is making me think about changing providers even though I have had Directv for several years and am otherwise happy with your service. Can this be stopped? I can’t believe this was a decision you made to interrupt sports events rather than wait for the usual breaks in the action for commercials. Last night we missed a home run in addition to other plays, and tonight it just happened again.

  54. naviomelo on April 18th, 2009 7:25 pm

It sure is nice to have a left fielder that has some range.

  55. juneau_fan on April 18th, 2009 7:30 pm

I could swear that Direct TV ‘customers’ in other threads mentioned that they had complained. I know I would have been breathing fire down the phone the first time it happened to me.

“First they’ve heard of it” Insane.

  56. scott19 on April 18th, 2009 7:32 pm

It sure is nice to have a left fielder that has some range.

Amen to that, bro! I took my dad to the game last night, and I remarked to him on one play how there was no way Raul would’ve made that last year.

  57. Go Felix on April 18th, 2009 7:33 pm

I’ve never seen Lopez move so fast.

  58. UpOrDownMsFan on April 18th, 2009 7:34 pm

That was an ugly at bat by Sweeney.

I know he’s been amazing in the dugout– and I love that. But doesn’t that play better as some sort of bench coach, rather than a slow swinging, slow running, very well respected player hanging on too long and keeping some pretty talented young guys in the minors?

Don’t get me wrong, I think Sweeney was an excellent Major League baller– but it looks over for him when he’s at the plate.

  59. Go Felix on April 18th, 2009 7:34 pm

    WAKABALL!!

  60. Go Felix on April 18th, 2009 7:35 pm

    Out by a mile……wow!

  61. Paul B on April 18th, 2009 7:35 pm

I just got off the phone. It happened while I was speaking to him, just as Polanco hit his double in the 5th, I was suddenly watching a Geico and a Directv commercial. So I was able to give him a real time report.

He said their engineers would look into it, and it would take 48 hours.

    Oh, crud, a double play.

  62. juneau_fan on April 18th, 2009 7:35 pm

    Lopez is so slow.

  66. DMZ on April 18th, 2009 7:36 pm

Lopez looked really, really slow running home. Wow.

  67. naviomelo on April 18th, 2009 7:37 pm

Amen to that, bro! I took my dad to the game last night, and I remarked to him on one play how there was no way Raul would’ve made that last year.

My dad thought Raul was good defensively, so I imagine I’ll have to explain that too, soon.

  68. juneau_fan on April 18th, 2009 7:38 pm

This Jose’s going to be Vidro in a couple of years for sure. Totally a weeble that woobles but doesn’t fall down.

  69. themedia on April 18th, 2009 7:38 pm

    That was a terrible slide.

  70. Carson on April 18th, 2009 7:39 pm

I thought for a second Franky was going to make a play on that.

  71. Carson on April 18th, 2009 7:40 pm

Yeah, so why does our color commentator not mention how UGLY of a slide that was? Isn’t that his job?

We don’t need our children mimicking that.

  72. Paul B on April 18th, 2009 7:41 pm

Would you even call that a slide? It was really just sort of running and leaning.

  73. Go Felix on April 18th, 2009 7:43 pm

    Ugly throw by Ichiro…….yikes

  74. themedia on April 18th, 2009 7:44 pm

Bedard should pitch from the stretch. The only way Cabrera’s stealing is if a burger’s sitting on 2B.

  75. theraven on April 18th, 2009 7:44 pm

Ichiro tried to mimick the Granderson throw, but was off by about 20 feet.

    *shouldn’t*

  77. juneau_fan on April 18th, 2009 7:45 pm

Good height on that catch attempt, Johnson. Played some b-ball?

I hate when Ichiro makes an error. I get all uncomfortable and expect to see it raining frogs and cats and dogs to be making love in the streets.

Sucks that one error could cost us the game, but unless Jackson has a Verlander-esque meltdown…

  81. msb on April 18th, 2009 7:52 pm

Just because you can throw as far as Oregon, doesn’t always mean you should.

  82. Go Felix on April 18th, 2009 7:55 pm

    GRIFFEY……..damn.

  83. theraven on April 18th, 2009 7:55 pm

(Did anyone else see the replay of the ball Ichiro threw away– I swear it looks like he could have caught that if he was hustling? Still not 100% maybe?)

  99. theraven on April 18th, 2009 8:12 pm

I think Edwin Jackson had something like a career 0.60 ERA against the M’s coming into this game. Watching this game, I don’t think it’s been a fluke.

  100. Flowin on April 18th, 2009 8:13 pm

That was the worst inning I have ever seen. I mean, that was pathetic. 9 pitches?!?!?!

A lazy pop up, a first pitch fly ball, and a ground ball.

No wonder Jackson pitch count is at 84. :(

  101. themedia on April 18th, 2009 8:16 pm

I guess nobody ever told Lopez to lay off the high stuff. That pitch was over his head.

Oh good, and emergency broadcast test. Matches my mood. SQQUEEELLL!

  107. UpOrDownMsFan on April 18th, 2009 8:21 pm

What the hell is the pitch Jackson throws that bounces halfway to the plate and has guys like Beltre and Johnson swinging at it?

  108. Flowin on April 18th, 2009 8:21 pm

I am holding out hope. But it all starts with making the pitcher throw strikes. Rob can’t be chasing pitches like that in the dirt.

  109. wabbles on April 18th, 2009 8:21 pm

A hit! A hit! By Johnson no less!

  110. Go Felix on April 18th, 2009 8:23 pm

  112. juneau_fan on April 18th, 2009 8:23 pm

I really, really hate Yuni. He’s this year’s Vidro.

  114. Go Felix on April 18th, 2009 8:24 pm

  115. Flowin on April 18th, 2009 8:24 pm

  120. juneau_fan on April 18th, 2009 8:27 pm

Thank you, baby Jesus! The curse of Sims strikes again!

    “Jackson hasn’t walked anyone tonight…”

    Ball four!

  121. TheMsfan on April 18th, 2009 8:27 pm

did you know that edwin jackson has pitched better then eric bedard tonight?

because if you didnt, check out FSN, and dave sims will tell ya allllllllll about it!

  122. juneau_fan on April 18th, 2009 8:29 pm

The curse of Sims better not work again:

“One swing of the bat ties this up.”

  123. UpOrDownMsFan on April 18th, 2009 8:29 pm

C’mon Sims, how ’bout a little “Jackson hasn’t given up a home run tonight!?”

  124. UpOrDownMsFan on April 18th, 2009 8:31 pm

That was NOT a strike– not even close. 6 inches off the plate AFTER breaking towards the plate… Man, that sucked. 9 on 10 for that pitch.

  125. juneau_fan on April 18th, 2009 8:32 pm

I love Ichiro’s version of arguing calls. Just standing there, as though the pitcher and catcher will return to finish the at-bat.

  126. msb on April 18th, 2009 8:33 pm

    He’s loving Edwin tonight.

  127. mln on April 18th, 2009 8:34 pm

This only sets things up for a dramatic walkoff win by the Mariners. (cross fingers)

  128. UpOrDownMsFan on April 18th, 2009 8:39 pm

How do teams plan on pitching the middle part of the M’s lineup in the 9th this year? You can’t just walk a guy to set up a Richie Sexson or Jose Vidro double play?

Prediction: Griffey ties it with a 2-run homer in the 9th, and Beltre wins it with a walkoff ding… Goodnight, Detroit!

  129. ppl on April 18th, 2009 8:41 pm

Rodney is something like 35 for 60 in save opportunities.

  130. ppl on April 18th, 2009 8:43 pm

Where would we be without Beltre’s arm?

  131. Oolon on April 18th, 2009 8:44 pm

In the “Lots of News…” thread…

Dave on March 29th, 2009 6:12 pm Edwin Jackson isn’t good.

  132. TheMsfan on April 18th, 2009 8:46 pm

    sean white has been good

but edwin jackson has just been a little better

ok, im done making fun of dave sims

  133. madwlad on April 18th, 2009 8:46 pm

    Lets make a comeback.

  134. school25 on April 18th, 2009 8:48 pm

    nice at bat

  135. juneau_fan on April 18th, 2009 8:49 pm

Oh shit. This is either going to end well, or not.

  136. ppl on April 18th, 2009 8:50 pm

Jr. vs a guy with 25 blown saves in 60 opportunities = ?

  137. mln on April 18th, 2009 8:50 pm

Ichiro Lite walks! Here we go!

  138. Flowin on April 18th, 2009 8:52 pm

    deep fly ball.. **sigh**

  139. theraven on April 18th, 2009 8:53 pm

Beltre must hit balls with more top-spin than any other player in the league.

  140. juneau_fan on April 18th, 2009 8:53 pm

Now, I *know* this won’t end well.

  141. ppl on April 18th, 2009 8:57 pm

Lots of Mariner flaws were on display tonight.

  142. TomTuttle on April 18th, 2009 8:57 pm

Eh, better luck tomorrow. . .

  143. TheMsfan on April 18th, 2009 8:58 pm

    seriously?

ill take 8 and 4 at any time? but edwin jackson? seriously?

i guess its a pretty firm reality check

  144. themedia on April 18th, 2009 9:01 pm

Beltre’s fly-out looked great off the bat. TONS of top spin, though.

  145. msb on April 18th, 2009 9:02 pm

Apparently there is a (SSS) history of Mariner ineptitude vs Edwin Jackson.

  146. ppl on April 18th, 2009 9:02 pm

Detroit does have a formidable line-up: It is still an achievement to hold them to just two runs in a game, and five in two. And we can still win this series.

  147. mln on April 18th, 2009 9:10 pm

The Mariners needed to bunt more.

    Bunts are magical.

  148. ppl on April 18th, 2009 9:25 pm

Next up: Silva vs the Detroit line-up. And the M’s who did a fine job of handing Edwin Jackson a great victory, and keeping Leyland from having to use his pen, get Rick Porcello. Maybe Porcello is not ready for the big-leagues yet.

  149. msb on April 18th, 2009 9:59 pm

    He’s “Ichiro Light”

well, now we know what Matt Pittman is doing during the game — reading USSM. Makes a change from him watching basketball, I suppose

  150. msb on April 18th, 2009 11:13 pm

I miss the edit function. I think I would have shut my mouth on this one.

  151. DMZ on April 18th, 2009 11:43 pm

It’s on a timer, is what.

  152. Roy Stuckey Weaver on April 18th, 2009 11:58 pm

    Yuni… 3 ABs… 6 pitches… a K… and hit in to a DP… Noice!

  153. msb on April 19th, 2009 8:30 am

It’s on a timer, is what.

I haven’t gotten the timer in a while. Of course, when I send this, it’ll likely appear :)

  154. msb on April 19th, 2009 8:31 am

nope. no timer, no edit choice.

  155. DMZ on April 19th, 2009 8:56 am

msb: can you drop me a line with your operating system/browser/browser version? I’ll look into this tonight.

  156. msb on April 19th, 2009 9:39 am

    sure thing
    (testing IE this time)
