Game 28, Mariners at Royals

Dave · May 6, 2009 at 5:10 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Silva vs Ponson, 5:10 pm.

The last stand of Carlos Silva. Even if we lose, we win.

New line-up tonight, as Wak changes things up just for the heck of it.

Ichiro, RF
Chavez, LF
Lopez, 2B (because the right-handed hitter with a .303 OBP needed to be moved up)
Branyah, 1B
Beltre, 3B
Griffey, DH
Johjima, C
Gutierrez, CF
Betancourt, SS

Ponson isn’t good, so at least we got all four of our LH bats in the line-up tonight. Hopefully our fatso is better than their fatso.

Literally a battle of heavyweights tonight.

  2. Sports on a Schtick on May 6th, 2009 5:15 pm

Battle of the Bulge! Willie’s Revenge! Bizarro Kauffman Stadium! It’s all too much!

  3. scott19 on May 6th, 2009 5:21 pm

You just stole my thunder there, Dan! :)

But seriously, I could just visualize that promo: “Coming to the Emerald Queen Casino…WBC World Heavyweight Champion “Sir” Sidney Ponson defends his title against the #1 challenger Carlos “The Chef” Silva in 12 thrilling rounds!”

  4. naviomelo on May 6th, 2009 5:22 pm

    Silva’s done.

  5. Carson on May 6th, 2009 5:23 pm

    The Ignitor!

  6. lightsabermetrician on May 6th, 2009 5:23 pm

    IGNITOR!!1!

  7. Mike Snow on May 6th, 2009 5:24 pm

    Is Olson warming up yet?

No, no. It’s the Muckleshoot’s “New way to Buffet” promo.

Silva making Willie look like Ted Williams…

  9. UW10 on May 6th, 2009 5:24 pm

Warm someone up in the ‘pen!

  10. GTownHoyas on May 6th, 2009 5:25 pm

Dang. As soon as I saw Ponson was pitching I told myself I had to be the first one on here so I could make the first joke about the combined weights of him and Silva. Too late I guess.

  11. alexD on May 6th, 2009 5:25 pm

It only took two minutes for the Royals to get more hits than the Mariners could in 9 innings last night. Wooo!

  12. Carson on May 6th, 2009 5:26 pm

Hm. I’d normally say that wasn’t intentional. But Guillen and Silva weren’t exactly best friends.

Silva is supposed to have great control though! How’d he barely knick him?

  13. Lauren, token chick on May 6th, 2009 5:26 pm

Damnation. This game is deliberately interfering with my attempt to get the fat jokes shut down.

  14. UW10 on May 6th, 2009 5:28 pm

He gets 12 million a year for this! 12 million!!!!

  15. scott19 on May 6th, 2009 5:28 pm

Silva making Willie look like Ted Williams…

Actually, I’d laugh my arse off if WFB went yard off of The Chef in his next at-bat.

  16. Mike Snow on May 6th, 2009 5:29 pm

Lauren, you’ll just have to encourage people to pursue some other thread of conversation.

  17. Flowin on May 6th, 2009 5:29 pm

All jokes aside, I think Jason Vargas needs to be warming up in the pen. We can’t let this game get out of hand early. It is unfair to ask the offense to have to continuously come back from 6 or 7 runs down every 5 days when Silva starts. I don’t even know why Silva is starting tonight. Why do we have to wait for him to completely crash and burn before we can replace him in the lineup.

Dave said that if we lose, we win. We all know that Silva sucks. Why do we have to lose another game (one more game that we may need in the division race) just to prove that Silva is not a quality pitcher. I can tell you that right now, and we don’t have to lose another game to determine that.

Wak.. for the good of the team, put in Vargas, and give the Mariners a chance to win a game tonight. Do it for the good of the team.

  18. JMHawkins on May 6th, 2009 5:29 pm

Dave Niehaus sounds… sad. Discontented like.

  19. lightsabermetrician on May 6th, 2009 5:29 pm

    I’m going back to Olbermann.

  20. Flowin on May 6th, 2009 5:30 pm

    Are you kidding me?!??!?!?!?!

As I typed that last comment, the Royals just scored AGAIN!!!

Come on Wak.. the gig is up. It’s time for a change. Pull Silva before the game gets out of hand in the first inning.

  21. Lauren, token chick on May 6th, 2009 5:30 pm

Mike: Nah. His ERA is over 8 now. I’ve abandoned him to his fate.

  22. JerBear on May 6th, 2009 5:31 pm

I think Silva can kiss his spot in the rotation goodbye…

  23. littlelinny6 on May 6th, 2009 5:31 pm

I think at this point you got to yank Silva. Just put him on the DL with a strained quad or some crap. Any AAAA pitcher is better than this. I hope Olson appears next inning.

  24. UW10 on May 6th, 2009 5:32 pm

seriously, send him to triple A. MLB really needs a rule where you can cut players who don’t perform. That’s what makes the NFL so great

  25. Flowin on May 6th, 2009 5:32 pm

But WHY should we have to lose ANOTHER game just to find out that Silva can’t pitch???

If Wak is a good manager, and he wants the team to win, we will see Jason Vargas walking out there in the bottom of the 2nd inning. That will give me all the confidence in the world in Wak and his ability to manage.

  26. littlelinny6 on May 6th, 2009 5:33 pm

it amazes me but it seems Wak may be just like McLaren before him–all talk and no change. Has Yuni been displaced of playing time? No. Has Silva lost his rotation spot? No.

  27. pgreyy on May 6th, 2009 5:33 pm

Makes me wish the team traveled by bus…so when Carlos needed to make a “pit stop” at a gas station along the way, the bus could drive off without him.

I’m imagining Carlos, toilet paper in hand, pants around his ankles, furiously trying to run down the highway to chase the team bus that has no intention of turning around to pick him back up.

Instead…the team travels by plane…and Carlos will remain an anchor keeping us from getting as high off the ground as we should from now to the end of this season…and next season…and possibly even the season after that…

    Sigh.

  28. DMZ on May 6th, 2009 5:33 pm

I uh… I just wrote a really long post predicting a future article on Silva losing his spot in the rotation. Here’s the question: should I have put a disclaimer on it, and how long before someone thinks I’m serious?

  29. Sports on a Schtick on May 6th, 2009 5:33 pm

And Ibanez whiffs on a flyball. And Jeremy Reed up to the plate!

I’ve pretty much moved on from this game…

  30. argh on May 6th, 2009 5:34 pm

Apparently he’s lost his spot on the rotation. But what he heck do you do with a guy in the bullpen who gives up 3 runs an inning? How many 10 run leads can we anticipate the Ms having this year?

(And, Derek, it took about 30 seconds for someone to take you seriously)

  31. UW10 on May 6th, 2009 5:35 pm

man he’s still got a sweet lookin’ swing

  32. scott19 on May 6th, 2009 5:35 pm

Rizzs: “Good idea to give Silva a little bit of a breather…”

Too bad we couldn’t give him a little bit of an unconditional release instead.

  33. Sklyansky on May 6th, 2009 5:35 pm

If Wak is just going to punt this game, he should keep Silva out there and see if he can give up 30-40 runs. If we’re going to concede every fifth game, I’d at least like to see history made.

  34. tgf on May 6th, 2009 5:35 pm

I think at this point you got to yank Silva. Just put him on the DL with a strained quad or some crap.

I prefer strained abdominal muscle because it is completely untestable (and therefore irrefutable).

  35. alexD on May 6th, 2009 5:35 pm

god damn, i went to take a leak as soon as Silva got the last out in the first. By the time I get back we already have two outs?!

  36. Mike Snow on May 6th, 2009 5:36 pm

should I have put a disclaimer on it, and how long before someone thinks I’m serious?

No, and before we see a relief pitcher in this game.

  37. Mike Snow on May 6th, 2009 5:37 pm

At least Griffey seems to be okay.

  38. Flowin on May 6th, 2009 5:38 pm

Wow… Derek, that was a bit too generous to Silva, don’t you think? I wouldn’t have been as kind.

  39. Butwheredoesthemeatgo on May 6th, 2009 5:39 pm

I can’t wait until Silva regresses to his mean from all those excellent years in Minnesota, this situation is so much different from something like say Zito, who actually had good stuff and numbers so there is hope, with Silva there is no hope, he was never an above average MLB starter, at his peak, he was slightly below average, we are holding out for nothing above the replacement level player even if he regresses to his mean.

  40. DMZ on May 6th, 2009 5:42 pm

Wait, seriously, you thought that was generous to Silva?

I guess it took 5m for someone to miss the point. I’ll think about putting some too-obvious disclaimer on it.

  41. Mike Snow on May 6th, 2009 5:44 pm

Sometimes it’s hard to tell if the responses are going along with the joke or serious.

  42. DMZ on May 6th, 2009 5:46 pm

    I know.

  43. JMHawkins on May 6th, 2009 5:48 pm

Here’s the question: should I have put a disclaimer on it, and how long before someone thinks I’m serious?

Oh, I just figured you were auditioning for a job at the PI.

  44. tgf on May 6th, 2009 5:49 pm

I guess it took 5m for someone to miss the point. I’ll think about putting some too-obvious disclaimer on it.

If you were referring to my comment (which was 5 minutes after you posted), I can assure you I got it. Kind of hard not to from the title.

  45. scott19 on May 6th, 2009 5:49 pm

I prefer strained abdominal muscle because it is completely untestable (and therefore irrefutable).

Which is what’s kinda cool about the NHL: the generic (and often mysterious) “upper/lower body injury” which lands a guy on the I/R list.

  46. DMZ on May 6th, 2009 5:51 pm

    tgf: no

I read this article about how people’s interpretations of Stephen Colbert are hugely skewed by their own views — conservatives often believe that he’s serious, not satirical. I think that’s how the Silva article’s going to go.

  47. naviomelo on May 6th, 2009 5:52 pm

Chavez needs to be batting 9th and Betancourt needs to be batting for some other team.

  48. Flowin on May 6th, 2009 5:54 pm

Yeah.. I should have made it more clear the sarcasm in my response.

  49. littlelinny6 on May 6th, 2009 5:55 pm

Why not put the take sign on 3-1 with Endy?? The best case scenario for endy is a single, which would be the same result as a walk. Is Wak alive in the dugout? You have to understand your strengths and weaknesses as a team. Guys like Endy, Ichiro, Betancourt, Johjima, etc. should take a strike on every 3-0, 2-0, and 3-1 pitch–they have no power so we might as well try to walk. Then at least Endy and Ichiro can take advantage of one skill they do have and steal bases.

  50. Flowin on May 6th, 2009 5:55 pm

Another run let up by fatty. How many runs do we have to get behind before we see Jason Vargas??

1 more? 2 more? It is inevitable. Wak– please pull Silva NOW!

  51. MattThompson on May 6th, 2009 5:55 pm

I’m just thankful we’re missing Greinke in this series. Or maybe not. A Greinke-Silva matchup would have been pretty historic, if but for one statistical note. The difference in their ERA+ would be over 1100. Seriously, Greinke, right now, has an ERA+ of 1170, and Silva’s is 63. That’s downright comical.

  52. Old Man Grimes on May 6th, 2009 5:56 pm

I’m not listening to the radio, so forgive me if you all just heard this: Griffey just tied Babe Ruth for #42 all-time for doubles with 506. He will soon be overtaking Rickey Henderson (510) and Edgar Martinez (514).

  53. Axtell on May 6th, 2009 5:56 pm

And another terrible pitching the M’s lineup making look like a hall of famer. 3 innings, not even 40 pitches for horrible Ponson.

    This is unbearable.

  54. DMZ on May 6th, 2009 5:56 pm

Carlos… well, I look forward to seeing how well my predicted column matches up with the actual column, though it’s extremely likely that the actual column will be influences by my predicted one.

  55. juneau_fan on May 6th, 2009 5:57 pm

Yuni wasn’t even trying there. No sense wasting the energy by running over there if your glove’s not going to be facing the right direction.

  56. DMZ on May 6th, 2009 5:58 pm

It’s hilarious, btw, that we’re having problems discerning sarcasm while discussing whether the tone of a separate article will be interpreted correctly or not. I’m confusing myself at this point.

  57. Axtell on May 6th, 2009 5:58 pm

    I meant pitcher, not pitching.

  58. alexD on May 6th, 2009 5:59 pm

This is funny…I’m not even mad. Another long day for our bullpen.

Rick R “Wak says Silva just has to believe in his stuff”. Believing in Santa does make it any more real..

  59. Flowin on May 6th, 2009 5:59 pm

    Yeah.. sorry about that. lol.

  60. juneau_fan on May 6th, 2009 6:00 pm

I think we all feel like Dave: “And anooootheeerr looonnnggg fooulll into the ssstttandsss.”

Ooo, he wakes up for “There’s action in the bullpen!”

  61. Butwheredoesthemeatgo on May 6th, 2009 6:00 pm

at this point might as well have silva pitch the whole 9 innings, even if it is 150 pitches, can a pitcher take himself out of a game? Not sure how that works, if they can try and make him pitch longer than he wants to. When he leaves will he be the most hated mariner ever, for his performance while here, so A-rod doesn’t count.

  62. UW10 on May 6th, 2009 6:02 pm

You can hear the disgust in Dave’s voice. Have we ever had a worse pitcher?

  63. juneau_fan on May 6th, 2009 6:02 pm

HAHAHHAAA…talk about grasping for cold comfort! Dave: “I’ll say this for Silva; he’s never given up a grand slam.”

  64. littlelinny6 on May 6th, 2009 6:03 pm

why are we punting the game in the 3rd inning? so silva doesnt get his feelings hurt?

  65. scott19 on May 6th, 2009 6:04 pm

Have we ever had a worse pitcher?

    Bobby Ayala was pretty close.

  66. Mike Snow on May 6th, 2009 6:04 pm

When he leaves will he be the most hated mariner ever, for his performance while here, so A-rod doesn’t count.

    Remember Scott Spiezio?

  67. tgf on May 6th, 2009 6:05 pm

I’m more concerned that the actual column will be written weeks, rather than hours, from now.

  68. UW10 on May 6th, 2009 6:05 pm

    oh what the f*ck

  69. joser on May 6th, 2009 6:05 pm

A run on a balk. And so Silva’s career ends: not with a bang, but with a whimper.

  70. Axtell on May 6th, 2009 6:05 pm

    hahahahahahaha a balk

    I give up.

  71. scott19 on May 6th, 2009 6:05 pm

OMG, now we have seen everything!

  72. DMZ on May 6th, 2009 6:05 pm

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE SHITTING ME

  73. Lauren, token chick on May 6th, 2009 6:06 pm

Hee hee. Another way to give up a run! He found it!

  74. JMHawkins on May 6th, 2009 6:06 pm

Another long day for our bullpen.

Olson was supposed to start yesterday and didn’t, so you could chuck him in for five or six innings tonght and just figure he’s in the rotation now.

And throwing salt in the wounds, tonights Aflac question was about how many pitchers have had an ERA under 2.00 for the season…

  75. RefusetoLose95 on May 6th, 2009 6:06 pm

    I feel like I’m watching little league….

  76. tgf on May 6th, 2009 6:06 pm

I’m pretty happy I’m not actually watching this game at this point.

  77. nvn8vbryce on May 6th, 2009 6:07 pm

I was hoping to tune in and see the Mariners with the lead and Silva pitching nicely, with our ex-M’s whiffing at pitches… Seriously, a balk? Throw his ass out of the game, Wak!

  78. Mike Snow on May 6th, 2009 6:07 pm

Silva’s trying to pass Denny Stark as the team’s ERA leader.

  79. brothermatt on May 6th, 2009 6:08 pm

what’s the pitcher’s bizarro equivalent of hitting for the cycle?

i.e., how many different ways are there to give up a run? Silva has to be pretty close to it already.

  80. joser on May 6th, 2009 6:08 pm

That alarm is going off in the background again. I was going to suggest it was a fire-alarm, with Mr gas-can on the mound burning down our hopes for a division lead.

But I think it may be the alarm on the Mariners’ treasury. “OMG! Forty eight million dollars just… vanished!”

  81. littlelinny6 on May 6th, 2009 6:08 pm

What I want to know is why didn’t Silva get yanked after inning one? Down 3-0 and knowing our offense has been scuffling why just give up on a game. I thought the point was to try to win?? I don’t know how you can answer to us, the M’s fan base with an obvious blatant disregard for wins and loses.

  82. naviomelo on May 6th, 2009 6:09 pm

Silva’s pitching about as well as Colbert’s show is funny.

  83. nvn8vbryce on May 6th, 2009 6:09 pm

I was hoping to tune into a Mariners’ lead and Silva pitching nicely, not the shit burger we’re currently being served…

  84. Lauren, token chick on May 6th, 2009 6:10 pm

Scott Spiezio! Ooh, if Silva had Spiezio’s tattoo, that would make him the ultimate villain. If only.

Naviomelo: You’re nuts. Colbert is freakin’ hilarious.

  85. scott19 on May 6th, 2009 6:10 pm

    and Silva pitching nicely

In what parallel universe might that be?

  86. joser on May 6th, 2009 6:11 pm

Anybody who doesn’t get a hit off Silva tonight has to feel like Gabe Kapler returning to the dugout after facing Nick Swisher.

  87. UW10 on May 6th, 2009 6:11 pm

Hey what are the rules on swearing here? I just want to know so I know how many expletives I can string together after Silva gives up 4 more runs next inning

  88. Flowin on May 6th, 2009 6:11 pm

littlelinny6, go back and read my comment post at the beginning of inning #1, when it was like 1-0, and he had just given up his first (of many) runs.

And I like Colbert.. please do NOT compare Silva’s pathetic performance to Colbert. Not even close. Silva is a joke.

  89. Scottdids on May 6th, 2009 6:12 pm

I had Sidney Ponson in my fantasy league and dumped him. I should have looked at the schedule and known he’d be ok for one more turn in the rotation.

  90. dsmiley on May 6th, 2009 6:12 pm

Oh do not even compare Silva to Colbert. Silva could eat him for breakfast.

Speaking of Silva: I can’t believe he’s finding new and ingenious ways of fucking up. Can we trade him for mini-sirloin burgers?

  91. lightsabermetrician on May 6th, 2009 6:12 pm

This is…this is worse than Panic at the Disco.

  92. UW10 on May 6th, 2009 6:12 pm

and we’re making ponson look like greinke. perfect

  93. joser on May 6th, 2009 6:12 pm

I was hoping to tune into a Mariners’ lead and Silva pitching nicely,

There’s hopeful, and then there’s clinically delusional.

  94. Mike Snow on May 6th, 2009 6:12 pm

Lauren, please don’t plant mental images that involve combinations of Silva and Spiezio, that’s just sick and wrong.

  95. lightsabermetrician on May 6th, 2009 6:13 pm

This is…this is worse than Ann Coulter.

  96. joser on May 6th, 2009 6:13 pm

Or like any M’s batter returning to the dugout after facing Ponson.

Political references never turn out well around here, and should be avoided.

  99. ballsoffire3 on May 6th, 2009 6:15 pm

My friend and myself have a little drinking game going on. For every 1st pitch ground out, while the M’s are up you take a shot. Also for every Yuni at bat that is less than 3 pitches you take a shot.

  100. Mike Snow on May 6th, 2009 6:16 pm

So Derek, if we have a winner, but it’s in the moderation queue, does it count?

  101. Flowin on May 6th, 2009 6:16 pm

This is… this is worse than Ann Coulter.

Nothing is worse than Ann Coulter. Even Silva’s pitching.

  102. scott19 on May 6th, 2009 6:16 pm

Well, there’s yet another quality start under the Chef’s (rather large) belt. >:(

  103. joser on May 6th, 2009 6:16 pm

You know, Silva could have a second career in Sumo wrestling. The training would combine two of his favorite activities: eating and threatening Japanese guys.

  104. cgmonk on May 6th, 2009 6:16 pm

Sims and Blowers blaming the balk on Johjima doing a little hop to the right.

  105. kenshabby on May 6th, 2009 6:17 pm

Please oh please oh please…I don’t ask for much in this life…please, Wak, let Silva finish this game. Allow me that one simple pleasure.

    edit: damn it.

  106. juneau_fan on May 6th, 2009 6:18 pm

21 walks already for Crisp!? Wow. I bet the entire Mariners lineup doesn’t have 21 walks.

  107. scott19 on May 6th, 2009 6:19 pm

If Wak would’ve left Silva in there, this game would have very likely wound up as ugly as that Baltimore-Texas game from a couple of years ago.

  108. Mike Snow on May 6th, 2009 6:20 pm

Actually, Griffey and Chavez alone get you there.

  109. juneau_fan on May 6th, 2009 6:20 pm

    what the deuce?

  112. kenshabby on May 6th, 2009 6:21 pm

As poorly as Silva has pitched tonight, at least he doesn’t have Arroyo’s line against Milwaukee:
    1 IP, 46 pitches, 7 H, 9 ER, 3 BB, 0 SO

That includes a 3-run HR and a grand slam.

    A t-ball tee could’ve fared better.

  113. scott19 on May 6th, 2009 6:22 pm

I’d also laugh my arse off if WFB went 5-for-5 in this game!

  114. lightsabermetrician on May 6th, 2009 6:24 pm

So is this where the season implodes? At least we made it to the first week in May.

  115. joser on May 6th, 2009 6:26 pm

What as that Fantasy “opposite” baseball game, where the goal was to have the worst group of players getting regular playing time? Silva would be an all-star.

  116. scott19 on May 6th, 2009 6:26 pm

Geez, I think Nellie Olson would be more effective at this point.

  117. Red Apple on May 6th, 2009 6:27 pm

    Ichiro, RF
    Chavez, LF
Lopez, 2B (because the right-handed hitter with a .303 OBP needed to be moved up)
    Branyah, 1B
    Beltre, 3B
    Griffey, DH
    Johjima, C
    Gutierrez, CF
    Betancourt, SS

Branyah — I like it…a combination of Branyan and “booyah!” :-)

  118. littlelinny6 on May 6th, 2009 6:28 pm

Yuni showed great range again on that Teahen single. At this point I would just settle for the outright release of Yuni and Silva–I can’t take it anymore.

  119. scott19 on May 6th, 2009 6:28 pm

What as that Fantasy “opposite” baseball game, where the goal was to have the worst group of players getting regular playing time? Silva would be an all-star.

In such a twisted league, Silva would also be a perennial candidate for Least Valuable Player.

  120. joser on May 6th, 2009 6:29 pm

Silva’s suck has infected the mound. Ponson is big enough to fight it off, but not Olson.

  121. pgreyy on May 6th, 2009 6:30 pm

It doesn’t immediately look like Mr. Olson is the solution to our problems.

  122. DMZ on May 6th, 2009 6:31 pm

I think I’m just going to let the “Echoes” comments play out and see where they wind up. It’s already too tangled.

  123. Mike Snow on May 6th, 2009 6:34 pm

It’s the right thing to do.

  124. KingFelixtheCat on May 6th, 2009 6:35 pm

we are making their offense look as good as toronto’s look this is just laughable at this point

  125. DMZ on May 6th, 2009 6:38 pm

Is it, though? I mean… clearly it’s not working itself out.

  126. KingFelixtheCat on May 6th, 2009 6:39 pm

yea u gotta do something to ease the pain here we go yuni don’t swing at too many pitches

  127. Flowin on May 6th, 2009 6:41 pm

Can you score 8 runs with one swing of the bat??

  128. Dayve on May 6th, 2009 6:41 pm

Good to see WFB doing well in KC and keeping alive the streak of Ex-Mariners who suddenly become productive in new uniforms.

  129. UW10 on May 6th, 2009 6:42 pm

    really ichiro? what the crap?

  130. UW10 on May 6th, 2009 6:43 pm

Can you score 8 runs with one swing of the bat??

    ———————

    chuck norris could

  131. KingFelixtheCat on May 6th, 2009 6:43 pm

u know ur having a horrible night when u have two straight batters hit it off the plate against sidney “nolan ryan” ponson(at least we make him look like him tonight)

  132. Flowin on May 6th, 2009 6:43 pm

They just came home to get the runner up 8-0?!?!?!?

  133. UW10 on May 6th, 2009 6:43 pm

bases loaded, one out, no runs. I love mariner’s baseball!

  134. theraven on May 6th, 2009 6:43 pm

So if you had the opportunity, would you take the Royals’ SS (Bloomquist) for the rest of May or Seattle’s (Yuni)?

This isn’t about full-year abilities or what-not, but for just the rest of May. Keep in consideration that Bloomquist has only had 48 official ABs this year, but has made it on base safely 27 times (with walks), while Yuni has had 99 ABs and only been on base 28 times.

  135. Coolalvin206 on May 6th, 2009 6:44 pm

Can we all agree Silva is done as a starter and never should see the light of day again?

This guy has helped us lose a once decent AL West lead. Give me a tenth of his salary and I could pitch like garbage too.

At least we can always look back and say we lead the division on early May as we slip further and further towards the cellar.

  136. Mike Snow on May 6th, 2009 6:44 pm

Should it work itself out? Is that the goal? Or should it be allowed to serve as a Rorschach test? It seems to me that, to the extent that we value free and open discussion in our society, that’s an important reason for it.

  137. naviomelo on May 6th, 2009 6:44 pm

DMZ – It looks like only one person didn’t get it, so far.

  138. mrmitra on May 6th, 2009 6:45 pm

Yay for two at bats in a row where the batters swung at a pitch out of the zone for an out with the bases loaded.

  139. JMHawkins on May 6th, 2009 6:47 pm

    Well, it’s 5 o’clock somewhere. I think I fix a drink.

  140. CC03 on May 6th, 2009 6:47 pm

I can’t bring myself to watch the M’s anymore. I’m tired of a team that can’t hit itself out of a wet paper bag. Not too mention a certain SS that is looking more and more like Derek Jeter in the field every day.

  141. DMZ on May 6th, 2009 6:48 pm

You know what, Mike, you’re right.

  142. DMZ on May 6th, 2009 6:48 pm

It’s a lot more than one.

  143. DMZ on May 6th, 2009 6:50 pm

Actual conversation between me and Mrs. Zumsteg:
“Do you want to watch the Office?”
    “No.”
    “30 Rock?”
    “No.”
“You want to keep watching the Mariners.”
    “Yeah.”
    (loooooooooooooooooooooong pause) “I don’t understand.”

  144. argh on May 6th, 2009 6:55 pm

My wife convinced me to tivo the game for later and catch a few Jon Stewart shows that were about to fall off the queue. Talk about being married to a great woman.

  145. Mike Snow on May 6th, 2009 6:56 pm

    I understand.

  146. Axtell on May 6th, 2009 6:56 pm

So was that pitch Beltre just hit as low as it looked on the gamecast stat tracker?

  147. UW10 on May 6th, 2009 6:57 pm

Did you see olivo jump back? HAHAHAHAHHAH

  148. jordan on May 6th, 2009 6:58 pm

Now that would have been a good fight.

  149. JerBear on May 6th, 2009 7:01 pm

Wow, Olivo is a wuss. That’s hilarious.

  150. CC03 on May 6th, 2009 7:01 pm

Seriously, 2 hits off of Ponson? What a joke. It’s sad that it’s actually an improvement of 1 hit off of Padilla yesterday.

    Pathetic.

  151. naviomelo on May 6th, 2009 7:02 pm

It’s a lot more than one.

My mistake. Just reread the comments.

  152. DMZ on May 6th, 2009 7:11 pm

How bad a RHP do you have to be to look bad against the M’s at this point? Seriously, Ponson is flotsam in MLB, he’s swappable with any of dozens of other guys given spring training invites this year, and they’re just hacking at his worst stuff. It’s embarassing.

  153. UW10 on May 6th, 2009 7:16 pm

I’m starting to wonder if we could even hit silva at this point

  154. Lauren, token chick on May 6th, 2009 7:18 pm

Flotsam. And not every spring training invitee is a SIR!

  155. Carson on May 6th, 2009 7:24 pm

HoRam? Hey this might not be over!

  156. UW10 on May 6th, 2009 7:30 pm

fuckin’ a, we made HoRam look like nolan ryan

  157. joser on May 6th, 2009 7:32 pm

I’m starting to wonder if we could even hit silva at this point

Maybe that’s the answer — put them up against each other, the trivially resistible force vs the effortlessly movable object. By the end of 9 innings, either Silva has his mojo back or the M’s have remembered how to hit.

  158. joser on May 6th, 2009 7:33 pm

I’m not sure what fixes our middle infield defense, though.

  159. juneau_fan on May 6th, 2009 7:39 pm

Jose Lopez does seem to be back into the listless mode out in the field…and there’s a run for his trouble.

I like that idea from another thread to somehow have unearned runs count as a stat for fielders.

  160. JMHawkins on May 6th, 2009 7:44 pm

Silva has been pretty much throwing batting practice lately. Might as well use him for it for real.

  161. juneau_fan on May 6th, 2009 7:46 pm

Jeez, this is where Farnsworth ended up?

KC is where all the flotsam ends up. (Or is it jetsam? Never can keep that straight.)

  162. JMHawkins on May 6th, 2009 7:47 pm

I knew Bloomquist would cost us the game!

  163. JMHawkins on May 6th, 2009 7:48 pm

KC is where all the flotsam ends up. (Or is it jetsam? Never can keep that straight.)

Probably Jetsam. Jetsam is what get’s thrown overboard in an effort to save the ship. Flotsam is what floats away when the ship sinks.

  164. joser on May 6th, 2009 7:49 pm

Floatsam is lost unintentionally (it “floats” away). Jetsam is jettisoned intentionally.

Farnsworth is clearly the latter. Ponson mght be former, considering he’s large enough to create his own tides.

  165. BillyJive on May 6th, 2009 7:59 pm

Starting to feel like last year’s season in these threads…mind you at least last year everyone had Willie to make fun of…
No one’s saying a whole lot about his success so far this season…
I hope these past few games aren’t the turning point for this season…but changes in the lineup are definately needed…
Now feel free to join me in a round of jagerbombs…

  166. Colm on May 6th, 2009 7:59 pm

And Angie Mentink clasps her hands together with an air of weary resignation and remarks that Silva didn’t pitch well.

And I can only imagine that, all the while, she’s thinking along the lines of “Jesus, Carlos, I coulda hit your batting practice junk all around the yard when I was 8 months pregnant”.

  167. SonOfZavaras on May 6th, 2009 8:18 pm

I count at least five ex-Mariners that sleep well tonight. Jesus.

Sidney Ponson blanked us for more or less a whole start. SIDNEY FREAKING PONSON. How many times has this guy tried to either eat or dumb-ass his way out of the big leagues??

It’s no real crime for a limited offense like ours to run into a Kevin Millwood and have him have a good day against us. He tends to have good days against us, from what I can recall.

Padilla is a shade below, but still. We’re looking like that against Sidney Ponson???

Dave couldn’t be more right. Changes needed, reeaaalll soon.

  168. DMZ on May 6th, 2009 8:20 pm

I would have taken Mentink’s side if that were a wager.

  169. scott19 on May 6th, 2009 8:21 pm

Man, Pittman is just lambasting the hell out of Silva at the moment…

How refreshing it is to hear at least a smidgen more of objectivity out of the post-game show following the KOMO years.

  170. scott19 on May 6th, 2009 8:26 pm

Now feel free to join me in a round of jagerbombs…

Good to hear from ya, BillyJive! Sorry it was a such a stinkola game…

BTW, I’m saving my Jaegerbombs for about 8 o’clock tomorrow night…when the ‘Nucks (hopefully) go up 3-1 on the Hawks! :)

  171. BillyJive on May 6th, 2009 8:33 pm

    It sure was…
Hope your Canucks do well…I’m rooting for the Caps…used to be a Leafs fan when I was a kid but when they traded my fav goalie (Mike Palmateer) to the Caps I kinda started rooting for them way back when…now that my Flames are gone…Go Caps…
Be nice to see the Nucks do well though…
    Now about those M’s….
    *sigh*

  172. Slippery Elmer on May 6th, 2009 9:57 pm

    scott19:

Geez, I think Nellie Olson would be more effective at this point.

    Totally agree. Also, nice reference.

  173. jephdood on May 6th, 2009 10:46 pm

If Silva is going to the pen, he better not pitch in ANY game that’s closer than 6 runs.

And if that’s all anyone feels comfortable with him handling, why the F is he still on this roster?

Eat the money. It’s less painful than him setting another foot on the mound for us.

His pitches were sitting there on a string for those guys tonight.

    Dammit!
