    No worries.

Sometimes we’d all like to pretend that these games aren’t actually happening.

  2. joser on May 8th, 2009 5:36 pm

That’s ok, I assumed you were out fighting bees.

With the additions of Mauer and Tolbert* this is a significantly more potent Twins lineup than the one the M’s saw a few weeks ago.

    * Isn’t that a Dilbert character? Soon to be found working on 520?

  3. Scottdids on May 8th, 2009 5:47 pm

Two days in a row for an Ichiro sliding catch :)

  4. Hesitant M's Fan on May 8th, 2009 5:48 pm

    Mariners vs. Royals?
I guess it doesn’t make much of a difference right now who we’re playing.

  5. cj on May 8th, 2009 5:49 pm

Ball 4 to Buscher sure looked like a strike to me (and pitch fx).

  6. Lauren, token chick on May 8th, 2009 5:50 pm

Pheeewww. I feel better. Thanks DMZ.

Game 30, M’s at Royals Twins

  8. Hesitant M's Fan on May 8th, 2009 5:54 pm

Looked awfully like a strike to me as well. That would’ve ended the inning with the throw to second. With how bad we’ve been hitting, can we get a call our way for once?

  9. Coolalvin206 on May 8th, 2009 5:54 pm

    Screw this team…

It’s the same flipping story EVERY night

How many runneres are we going to strand tonight?

  10. MedicineHat on May 8th, 2009 5:55 pm

Why did the Royals fly to Minnesota to play the Mariners?

    JK

  11. Sports on a Schtick on May 8th, 2009 5:57 pm

    Sorry. My fault.

That the M’s suck? Curse you Derek.

  12. pgreyy on May 8th, 2009 5:57 pm

And, as we survive the inning and get the chance to discuss other news, does anyone want to join me in pouring out a little from the cup on behalf of Bob Melvin…former Dbacks manager?

He might not have been the most popular M’s manager ever…but he did have some dirt kicking cleats to fill, didn’t he?

  13. m'schick on May 8th, 2009 5:59 pm

    amen pgreyy

  14. lightsabermetrician on May 8th, 2009 6:00 pm

We need a King Felix day, stat.

  15. m'schick on May 8th, 2009 6:00 pm

when is jakkas going back to the pen?

  16. xrats on May 8th, 2009 6:00 pm

So apparently we’ve seen the last of the plus .500 M’s for the year… we knew it was too good of a start to be true, but it sure hurts crashing back to reality.

  17. m'schick on May 8th, 2009 6:03 pm

    [no]

  18. Hesitant M's Fan on May 8th, 2009 6:06 pm

That called strike on Endy sure looked farther out of the zone than the called ball 4 on Young.

Should the heading be changed to M’s at Twins? For posterity, if nothing else.

  22. daveblev on May 8th, 2009 6:13 pm

Does anyone else cringe when you see Migual Batista warming up in the bullpen?

  23. juneau_fan on May 8th, 2009 6:14 pm

I believe Batista is seen as an innings eater. Speaking of which, I wonder if Silva’s having the whole team over to his house again, while they’re in Minneapolis.

  24. scott19 on May 8th, 2009 6:15 pm

Okay, Jak…no more Vulcan mind-melding with Silva for you!

  25. scott19 on May 8th, 2009 6:19 pm

does anyone want to join me in pouring out a little from the cup on behalf of Bob Melvin…former Dbacks manager?

Actually, I’m kinda waiting for him to get the Blue Notes back together so they can cut a new version of Bad Luck.

    Oh, wait…that was Harold Melvin…

Beltre really done gone and forgot how to hit.

  28. MsFanInAustin on May 8th, 2009 6:27 pm

Just turned on the game and the M’s are already in the hole 5 runs deep? *sigh* My Ranger fan friends’ taunts will continue.

  29. harry on May 8th, 2009 6:28 pm

They’ve all forgotten how to hit. When they go cold, they’re just abysmal to watch. It makes me wonder what it is they do to try to break out of these slumps. What do they work on? What does the hitting coach do?

What the hell has happened in the past week?

  30. harry on May 8th, 2009 6:29 pm

    Nice catch by Jak.

  31. mrmitra on May 8th, 2009 6:36 pm

I think word has gotten out that all you have to do to beat the Mariners is throw junk at them. Why throw strikes when we swing at balls? Being dominated by Cy Yuck candidates Padilla and Baker is proof of this.

  32. Lauren, token chick on May 8th, 2009 6:41 pm

    Bleah.

  33. snepp on May 8th, 2009 6:43 pm

    Baker != Padilla

  34. scott19 on May 8th, 2009 6:43 pm

Dave N. just remarked “What else is new?”

Yeah, the M’s are stinkin’ up the joint big time yet again.

  35. pgreyy on May 8th, 2009 6:44 pm

    Oof.

  36. DMZ on May 8th, 2009 6:44 pm

I’m glad I hurried home to watch those two home runs

  37. Mike Snow on May 8th, 2009 6:45 pm

    Baker != Padilla

I don’t know, how good of a reporter is Padilla?

  38. argh on May 8th, 2009 6:46 pm

This kid’s going to be off the team before I learn to spell, much less pronounce, his name.

  39. drjeff on May 8th, 2009 6:48 pm

Rather than agonize over this one, I’m switching to ESPN Classic to watch game 7 of the ’92 NLCS between the Pirates and Braves. I know how it turns out, but it’s not as painful.

Plus, hey, before Griffey’s dash, there was Sid Bream!

  40. scott19 on May 8th, 2009 6:48 pm

At this point, a baker on the overnight shift down at Krispy Kreme could probably shut down the M’s.

  41. pgreyy on May 8th, 2009 6:52 pm

    Ooof, redux.

  42. drjeff on May 8th, 2009 6:52 pm

    Tracer don’t lie!

  43. MsFanInAustin on May 8th, 2009 6:53 pm

Maybe we can get Miggy to pitch our BP. Seems to work for other teams. *groan*

  44. Diehard on May 8th, 2009 6:53 pm

Wow just turned the game on and then promptly changed the channel. We were all wondering how they would react when things would start to go against them and they are doing a great impression of 2008. Now the M’s have two holes in their rotation to fill.

  45. scott19 on May 8th, 2009 6:55 pm

Gah, when Brian Buscher is looking like Albert Pujols up there, ya know this one is LOOOOOOOOOONG over!

  46. MsFanInAustin on May 8th, 2009 6:55 pm

they are doing a great impression of 2008

I’m not ready to jump on this train, but I can’t help but remember what happened to them last May as well.

  47. harry on May 8th, 2009 6:56 pm

How did we go from April 2009 to May 2008? Man, this is painful.

  48. pgreyy on May 8th, 2009 6:58 pm

Here’s a fun game to last us the rest of these mop up innings.

Wrong reasons for the M’s current woes!

I’ll give you a couple to start:

    1) The clubhouse chemistry was upset when Joh came back.
    2) The team gave all they had in that 15 inning game and they’ve just got nothing left in the tank for the rest of the year.
    3) Things haven’t been the same since they sent Tui down.
    4) Everyone is trying very hard not to hurt their oblique.

    OK…your turn.

  49. juneau_fan on May 8th, 2009 6:59 pm

Glad I mixed my drink before turning the game on. My lips are nicely numb by now.

    Gooooo M’ssssss….*face down on keyboard*

  50. drjeff on May 8th, 2009 7:00 pm

The team is still grieving after visiting with The Ignitor, can’t shake that lost feeling.

  51. Coolalvin206 on May 8th, 2009 7:01 pm

You would think the law of averages would help us get a win eventually?? I mean now these games aren’t even close games. How can a team change for the worse this quickly?

I hope this cheers people up….Go Seahawks!!

  52. scott19 on May 8th, 2009 7:02 pm

Nah, let’s just all sing another chorus of “The Wheels On The Bus Fall Off & Off” instead.

  53. scott19 on May 8th, 2009 7:04 pm

You would think the law of averages would help us get a win eventually??

I dunno…the M’s are not scheduled to play the Nationals in the interleague games this year.

  54. kenshabby on May 8th, 2009 7:05 pm

When it rains, it pours. Then it floods the city streets and neighborhoods and carries all the hopes and dreams away in a muddy mass, never to be seen again.

    Aw, geez. It’s only 30 games…blah..blah….etc.

  55. harry on May 8th, 2009 7:05 pm

    Single, single, yeah!

Pop out, pop out, line out,…. yeah…

    Really??!

  57. madwlad on May 8th, 2009 7:08 pm

Yeah go seahawks!!! there going to be good next year after drafting curry, signing ken lucas to help the secondary, and getting some help for the defensive line. They should get back to playoffs next year. Thanks coolalvin that did cheer me up.

  58. Swungonandbelted on May 8th, 2009 7:12 pm

can we just leave Bautista out there until his arm literally falls off, and we can retire him?

  59. daveblev on May 8th, 2009 7:12 pm

so how long until we hear these words again:

“We got to change this thing around, and get after it, and only we can do it, the fans are pissed off, and i’m pissed off, and the players are pissed off”

  60. Lauren, token chick on May 8th, 2009 7:15 pm

    More reasons:

Angry Association of Strip Club Owners hired voodoo priestess to put curse on team.

Yuni constantly pining after me, distracting other players by describing my beauty ad nauseam.

Players so afraid of ingesting banned substances they’re refusing all food and drink.

Every player trying to prove the point that everyone else on the team needs to step up.

Glitch in space-time continuum has Scott Bakula leaping into each player’s body just as they stand at home plate.

Constant exhaustion from porn performance or helpful fluffing of fellow players.

  61. marcwolf on May 8th, 2009 7:16 pm

I hope the free swingers on this team don’t panic more in this slump and swing at more balls in the dirt or next year they’ll be swinging at pitches in a different uniform. I see more contact hitters on the horizon.

  62. argh on May 8th, 2009 7:17 pm

(Note to self: ask for paper bags instead of plastic at grocery store to avoid danger of smothering self while attending next home game.)

  63. Swungonandbelted on May 8th, 2009 7:18 pm

Players so afraid of ingesting banned substances they’re refusing all food and drink.

    Now that’s funny…..

  64. pgreyy on May 8th, 2009 7:19 pm

    More reasons…

Turns out the Mariners were single-handedly the reason that KFC ran out of free chicken for their Oprah/coupon promotion…and are now paying the price.

The key to everything was Jamie Burke after all.

    Junior’s inflamed colon was “lucky”.

Yuni having actually taken a couple of walks, broke his contract with the devil for playing on a contender this year.

The chemistry on this team is so strong that everyone sucking at once was the only way to save Carlos Silva from his fate.

  65. daveblev on May 8th, 2009 7:30 pm

Time to dismiss the hitting coach and DFA Jose Lopez and Yuni.

  66. Swungonandbelted on May 8th, 2009 7:33 pm

“Mariner’s Baseball…making the other team feel good about who they are….”

  67. Mr. Egaas on May 8th, 2009 7:34 pm

So glad that 11-0 only counts as 1 loss.

  68. pgreyy on May 8th, 2009 7:36 pm

In the wake of Melvin’s firing in Arizona, Bryan Price resigned.

Is he worth picking up to once again…maybe to coach up our minor league pitching prospects?

I always thought of Price as the one pitching coach who I felt made a positive difference…but that’s a fan’s perspective.

  69. Sinking Away on May 8th, 2009 7:43 pm

I just want to thank you good people. I would propose you adopt the following slogan:

USSMariner bloggers: we watch so you don’t have to.

  70. juneau_fan on May 8th, 2009 7:44 pm

We’re just exhausting the Twins so that we can beat them senseless tomorrow.

  71. egreenlaw9 on May 8th, 2009 7:49 pm

I just thought – ‘I wonder if we’re in first place still after this bad run…’

    Not so much.

Oh well, just 1 game back is still a ton better than last year.

What gives with the mod comments? It seems that the Ms offense isn’t the only thing slumping…

    Time for a Haiku:

    Mods like Ichiro
    Racing through dew covered fields
    Quotes with joyful song

  74. SonOfZavaras on May 8th, 2009 8:39 pm

Scott Baker isn’t a bad ML pitcher, I think better than Padilla and certainly Bannister of the Royals.

    But…barf.

Time for Felix to play “Tourniquet”.

  75. Diehard on May 8th, 2009 8:47 pm

Maybe they are getting all of their crappy loses out of the way early. Okay well the way the offense is going even if Felix pitches a complete game shutout, it would be 0-0 going into the top of the 10th. WAKE UP BATS!!!!!!!!

  76. Puffy on May 8th, 2009 9:25 pm

[long link, off topic, and doesn't even have anything to do with the Mariners]

  77. slescotts on May 8th, 2009 9:40 pm

A team can get dominated here and there. Bad performances happen. That said, I think it is time to worry. If we head back into Texas after another one of these or another blown series and I fear we are headed back to the AL West Basement for a good long spell, perhaps the rest of the season. We gotta’ tough schedule ahead, save for SF.

Hey, don’t get me wrong: this was a blow-out… However (and I realize I am an unintelligent boob for saying so–cue the stat head info about how ___ performance really wasn’t that bad if you take __, __ , and ___ into account) but $11 million in pitching and not a single SO!? UGH. :(

Save for a few against SF, things aren’t gonna’ any get easier for the next month+. We lose tomorrow and we are below .500 and likely to begin a steady slide into July. Oh M’s, please don’t go back to the cellar! Four runs in nearly 40 innings doesn’t help. I fear we are heading off the rails…

  78. Jeff Nye on May 8th, 2009 9:51 pm

What gives with the mod comments? It seems that the Ms offense isn’t the only thing slumping…

Comment quality always goes down when the team starts to suck.

As you can imagine, the tail end of last season was an adventure.

  79. Benne on May 8th, 2009 10:42 pm

Well, now I’m REALLY glad I decided to go see Star Trek instead of watch this game.

  80. msb on May 8th, 2009 11:06 pm

So, I missed about …. 6 runs? Ah well.

oh, and, thank you Lauren :)

  81. Sinking Away on May 9th, 2009 12:11 am

As always, tomorrow is a new day. Hopefully, a new way as well.

  82. jjracoon on May 9th, 2009 6:35 am

This was going to happen as opposing teams got healthier and the Mariners injuries piled up. In addition, offensively the new guys – Chavez, Gutierrez, and Branyan – apparently are three streaky type hitters and two old guys – Griffey and Sweeney – one of which is too old to provide much needed power offense and the other who will provide pretty good BA but not much power. End result is an offense eerily similar to last year less consistent hitting Ibanez. Defense is nice but cant win much scoring 2 or less runs a game.
