Game 44, Giants at Mariners

DMZ · May 23, 2009 at 6:13 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

“I was thinking, if we’re going to be judged on our performance, we have to be able to throw against our own team. It’s only fair.”
“Yeah.”
“I don’t want to go into contract negotiations next year and try to explain that my comparable pitchers got to face my team, while I’m out there getting hit around by the Rangers.”
“Absolutely. We do get the Angels and A’s, though.”
“Angels post-Vlad aren’t going to be Angels pre-Vlad. Lucky suckers who drew them early in the season. I’m saying, it should be adjusted or we should all be given a couple of extra starts against teams of our own offensive — sorry, hang on — what’s up, skip?”
“Washburn’s knee is bugging him. You’re pitching against the Giants tonight.”
“Woo-hoo!”

Daily Raul Update: No player in baseball has hit more home runs than Ibanez in 2009.

Raul Ibanez–your 2009 NL All-Star OF, NL MVP, and Triple Crown Winner!

Only thing missing will be a gold glove.

One of those “pre”s should be a “post”, I’m thinking? I’d edit it myself, but I wouldn’t want to mess things up.

Daily Mariners Update: We’re not in last place!

  7. DAMellen on May 23rd, 2009 6:47 pm

Isn’t Chris Tillman pretty good too. And Asdrubal Cabrera. And Shin Soo Choo…

Also, can we just trade Washburn and Bedard already? Every time they pitch bad or have a minor injury, I start to panic. Let them get their value back up and trade the shit out of them (whatever that means).

Morse playing 2B again tonight..is there anything to him playing 2B?

  11. Mike Snow on May 23rd, 2009 7:24 pm

The only significance to the position Morse plays is the number of corner-infield-outfield-DH types we currently have stashed at Tacoma.

  12. G-Man on May 23rd, 2009 7:30 pm

Ha! Rowand must be listening to Niehaus!

  13. juneau_fan on May 23rd, 2009 7:31 pm

Get. To. Cain. Early. You bastards.

    Thank you.

  14. juneau_fan on May 23rd, 2009 7:32 pm

You didn’t listen to me, dammit.

  15. NJ Ms on May 23rd, 2009 7:38 pm

Yea that is what I figured about Morse although it is nice that he has played some SS and 2B this year in case someone is shipped out at least there is some type of in house fill in although his D would make me a little nervous

  16. DMZ on May 23rd, 2009 7:39 pm

    A little?

  17. NJ Ms on May 23rd, 2009 7:40 pm

RRS through 2 innings for Tacoma no hits no walks 1 K…25 pitches 16 for strikes 1/4 gb/fb

  18. NJ Ms on May 23rd, 2009 7:42 pm

True DMZ it should be a lot since it would be a drop off from what we have which is scary to think about since the 2 up the middle are not much

  19. Mike Snow on May 23rd, 2009 7:48 pm

What are you talking about? Cedeno is fine defensively.

  20. Paul B on May 23rd, 2009 7:50 pm

Griffey’s hit in the first was amazing. The Giant CF starts back on the ball, only to have it drop about halfway between where he started and second base.

  21. juneau_fan on May 23rd, 2009 7:54 pm

    [Niehaus]

  22. Mike Snow on May 23rd, 2009 7:56 pm

Just run on Winn, don’t stop.

  23. zzyzx on May 23rd, 2009 7:57 pm

Was that supposed to be a hard trivia question? Maybe it’s just that weird things stick in my head.

  24. Paul B on May 23rd, 2009 7:59 pm

For anyone who was familiar with the game in question, and saw that comic, it was a very easy question. But I daresay that most people would not be in that category.

  25. juneau_fan on May 23rd, 2009 7:59 pm

Ah, I get deleted for my dyslexia! Although I did have a moment, thinking, i-e, e-i?? so I accept my punishment for not checking. Yeah, yeah, it’s a name that should be spelled correctly.

    One pathetic run.

  26. zzyzx on May 23rd, 2009 8:01 pm

Well I learned about the game from reading that comic.

  27. zzyzx on May 23rd, 2009 8:03 pm

This just in: Molina is SLOW.

  28. DMZ on May 23rd, 2009 8:06 pm

I wonder if that’s the same section of DNA that makes the Molinas catchers.

  29. juneau_fan on May 23rd, 2009 8:11 pm

Our catcher looked almost fast there.

  30. joser on May 23rd, 2009 8:13 pm

    Raul, AJ, Choo, Tillman, Cabrera…

And tonight in the “Closer” category of the ex-M’s files:
Putz with a Save for the Mets
Sherrill with a Save for Orioles
Soriano with a Save for the Braves

Here’s hoping a current Mariner gets a save tonight too…

BTW, if you’re into high leverage situations as depicted at Fangraphs, check out Soriano’s line for that game. He only faced two batters (Millar and Scutaro), but the bases were loaded and the Braves were up by only one. pLI facing Millar: 7.45
    pLI facing Scutaro: 9.16 (!)
    Total WPA: .459

  31. joser on May 23rd, 2009 8:14 pm

And I’m guessing the Sounders just scored, because the bar across the street just erupted (I can hear them from here)

  32. juneau_fan on May 23rd, 2009 8:23 pm

time for rally fries already? What inning is it?

  33. fiftyone on May 23rd, 2009 8:53 pm

You know, everyone wants to badmouth our offense, but we’re going to be just fine this year as long as we pitch a shutout every single night.

  34. juneau_fan on May 23rd, 2009 8:58 pm

    Batista finally falls to earth.

  35. Carson on May 23rd, 2009 9:01 pm

Daily Batista Update: He really is still on this roster, and being used.

  36. Scottdids on May 23rd, 2009 9:02 pm

Huuuuuuuge strikeout by Miguel. Barely anybody in here tonight?

  37. naviomelo on May 23rd, 2009 9:05 pm

Batista’s a master at tap dancing.

  38. pensive on May 23rd, 2009 9:05 pm

Ok these games require quite a lot of beer.

DMZ mentioned he was buying a beer not up to his palate’s standards. I just purchased at neighborhood Albertsons
Samuel Adams Imperial White $2.49 a 4 pack. 10.3% ABV.

Usually Sam out of price range but a pretty reasonable deal.

  39. fiftyone on May 23rd, 2009 9:06 pm

Holiday weekend scott. Holy crap Miggy! That was a pleasant surprise.

  40. juneau_fan on May 23rd, 2009 9:12 pm

In yesterday’s game, someone lamented when the game went extra innings, that suddenly there was a crowd.

It’s like a fire, or an traffic accident–disasters draw a crowd.

If the Giants tie this up, let’s see if everyone shows up.

But let’s say we win this thing, 1-0, should we assume this will be the lowest scoring series of the year for any team?

  41. naviomelo on May 23rd, 2009 9:14 pm

    Aurilia is pinch-hitting for Sandoval?!

  42. Mike Snow on May 23rd, 2009 9:18 pm

To a significant degree, run-scoring is what fuels game thread activity, good or bad. There’s less to comment on when both sides are just making outs, except perhaps when Felix is getting those outs.

  43. DMZ on May 23rd, 2009 9:21 pm

This team, I swear… being a fan is like being on an IV drip of anxiety.

  44. Scottdids on May 23rd, 2009 9:22 pm

  50. Scottdids on May 23rd, 2009 9:24 pm

Is Wak taking the Joe Torre/Scott Proctor approach with Lowe now? 2 innings last night, 7th batter here.

  51. argh on May 23rd, 2009 9:24 pm

Never mind the nurse. Flat line.

  52. UW10 on May 23rd, 2009 9:25 pm

Glad we can help out the Giants and their low home run tally.

  55. DMZ on May 23rd, 2009 9:25 pm

Mike: I also think there’s a huuuge time/day/weather correlation and — that ball didn’t look it was going to land there for a second. Dammit.

  56. Marinerfan4life on May 23rd, 2009 9:25 pm

Wow another kick to the balls…

  57. G-Man on May 23rd, 2009 9:26 pm

    You mean the undertaker.

  58. naviomelo on May 23rd, 2009 9:27 pm

Sandoval left with an injury, for those of you that were similarly puzzled.

  59. TJ Dirk on May 23rd, 2009 9:33 pm

    Random thoughts -

    - 6 straight batters reached base after two outs, nobody on… check that.. seven

    - for those that are about ERA (I know this site doesn’t) Lowe’s ERA ballooned by over 1.5 runs… so far

  60. TJ Dirk on May 23rd, 2009 9:34 pm

    eight straight….

  61. Mike Snow on May 23rd, 2009 9:36 pm

Oh, absolutely, the overall volume of game thread activity is also different depending on whether it’s a weekend, an East Coast start while everyone’s headed home from work, a day game, a beautiful day to be outside in Seattle, or whatever. Run-scoring doesn’t explain everything by a long shot, but since either team scoring tends to bring out a flurry of posts (as it just did), the existence of a connection is pretty obvious.

  62. TJ Dirk on May 23rd, 2009 9:40 pm

Can someone who’s actually watching the game say whether Lowe was chucking watermelons up there or were they just hitting good pitches? Gameday/CBSsports sucks as far that goes.

  63. JerBear on May 23rd, 2009 9:44 pm

TJ – they were pretty much right down the middle of the plate.

  64. cdowley on May 23rd, 2009 9:45 pm

Can someone who’s actually watching the game say whether Lowe was chucking watermelons up there or were they just hitting good pitches? Gameday/CBSsports sucks as far that goes.

Watermelons, pumpkins, little old ladies on walkers, you name it, he was throwing it.

Frankly, I think Sims had it right: over-use. This was what, his fifth game this week? And last night he tossed two innings. Boy was tired, he had no business being in there, and it showed.

  65. JerBear on May 23rd, 2009 9:46 pm

Gah – this team friggin sucks at hitting baseballs.

  66. tomas on May 23rd, 2009 9:47 pm

Last years model, Adrian ‘Bogus Bag’ Beltre is officially sold out. Say hello to ‘Bogus Bat’ Beltre

  67. GarForever on May 23rd, 2009 9:47 pm

Boy, this team just isn’t very good. And, by this team, I mean the Giants. And yet, the M’s have mustered three runs against them in 20 innings. I think, realistically, we should begin to prepare ourselves for the selling of the veterans and look forward to 2011. Sorry…

  68. jephdood on May 23rd, 2009 9:48 pm

Everyone else in the west has won tonight. C’mon Z! Get on the horn and start wheelin’ and dealin’!

  69. TJ Dirk on May 23rd, 2009 9:49 pm

But, he’s only earning $13.4 mil this season. That’s value…

We’re rapidly approaching the “much easier to plan your evenings” time of year…

  71. msb on May 23rd, 2009 9:54 pm

Sandoval left with an injury, for those of you that were similarly puzzled.

Didn’t Kruk used to say you couldn’t pull fat?

  72. TJ Dirk on May 23rd, 2009 9:55 pm

If Lopez hits into a double play… I swear my keyboard will be broken

  73. jephdood on May 23rd, 2009 9:57 pm

I don’t get upset anymore. I have no expectation of success for this team. I drink a beer and laugh.

  74. juneau_fan on May 23rd, 2009 9:57 pm

    oh, the game’s over??

  75. apunetid on May 23rd, 2009 10:03 pm

Everyone else in the west has won tonight.

In the NL West, at least (save for the Dodgers, where victory is hopefully imminent, considering the other team on the field).

  76. JerBear on May 23rd, 2009 10:05 pm

We’re rapidly approaching the “much easier to plan your evenings” time of year…

Ha, so true. I’m pretty sure my wife is looking forward to that…

  77. ppl on May 23rd, 2009 10:06 pm

Look on the bright side, we actually got scored a run off of a good right hander, instead of being shutout by a bad one. We got a good start from Olson, although it was against the Giants, he did his part. And if not for a Mark Lowe meltdown (Not the first) this was a game we could have won.

  78. jephdood on May 23rd, 2009 10:08 pm

I’d like to see one bold roster move right about now. I don’t know what that might be, but stir the pot a little bit.

  79. Marinerfan4life on May 23rd, 2009 10:16 pm

I am tired of this offense going out night after night and producing nearly nothing. Dr. Z: It’s time for a change. cough cough(Yuni, Lopez, Johjima)

  80. Breadbaker on May 23rd, 2009 10:21 pm

We had two men on with no one out the inning we scored. Three pitches later, we had one run and the inning was over. You will not get a big inning if you plan on scoring one run.

Move to the bottom of the seventh. We have Gutz on with Ichiro up with two out. Gutz gets thrown out and by the time Ichiro gets to bat again, we are four runs down.

I know we have trouble against righties, but didn’t we let Cain off both those instances? If a guy has just given up two base hits, can’t we make him work harder, maybe even get him out of the game rather than swinging at the first pitch three straight times? Shouldn’t he have to face Ichiro in a tough situation where an extra run might mean no chance of a comeback?

I’m not a big fan of small ball strategies, I guess is what I’m saying.

  81. galaxieboi on May 23rd, 2009 10:25 pm

    pLI facing Scutaro: 9.16 (!)

    Holy s***!

  82. galaxieboi on May 23rd, 2009 10:32 pm

Quick note. I’m going to be at all three M’s games here in Denver next month for anyone interested. I know at least one other USSM fellow (mark, you know I’m talking about you) will be @ Coors for one game. If y’all are in town, let us know. Love to buy ya a beer.

  83. Breadbaker on May 23rd, 2009 11:35 pm

Enjoy the games at Coors. I have been to Coors but never seen a game at Coors. I was biking by the stadium during a game against the Dodgers in 2004. It was like the eighth inning. I asked the usher if I could come in. He said, “sure.” Then he noticed I had a hydration pack on and told me I couldn’t come in with it. So I entered the gates, but didn’t see any of the game.

They were quite nice about it.
