Game 55, Twins at Mariners

DMZ · June 5, 2009 at 6:10 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Liriano v Felix.

Sweeney at DH! Yessss! Batting 4th! Yessss!

On the other hand, Cedeno gets back in, so he’ll have a shot at redeeming his generally disappointing performances. It’d be nice to see him get back into the infield rotation.

Even though Sweeney and Johnson are terrible it always seems like they’re getting big base hits. Maybe because I remember 10% of their at-bats.

  2. Nate on June 5th, 2009 6:39 pm

that’d be cool. they must be batting like .500 in that 10% you remember!!

  3. joser on June 5th, 2009 6:50 pm

No Betancourt. Otherwise, this appears to be Wak’s new “standard” anti-lefty lineup, swapping out the DHs and LFs.

  4. joser on June 5th, 2009 6:56 pm

    Per Baker

Ronny Cedeno is starting at shortstop, and Wakamatsu said it’s important to keep the utility player moving around to have him comfortable at a number of spots.

“We had Ronny out in left field,” Wakamatsu said. “He didn’t play a whole lot on the road trip. We were doing some mechanical adjustments on his swing, trying to get him to feel a little bit more comfortable.”

I don’t know that this in-season swing-tinkering helps very much except perhaps when good hitters have fallen into bad habits, but if they can get Cedeno to a hit just a little better it would be great. Mind you, he just has to cleanly field/throw one ball Betancourt would’ve booted/thrown away and it’s a net win.

  5. joser on June 5th, 2009 7:00 pm

Oh god, I started reading the comments over at Baker’s blog… ow, ow, my brain hurts. I closed the browser tab and hurried back here as fast as I could. Regardless of what you might think of his position on various issues, Baker deserves a medal for putting up with that.

  6. msb on June 5th, 2009 7:08 pm

I hate it when managers play guys just to play guys.

  7. msb on June 5th, 2009 7:37 pm

    Well, Michael!

  8. UW10 on June 5th, 2009 7:39 pm

    Sweeney at DH!! YES!!

  9. Sports on a Schtick on June 5th, 2009 7:39 pm

    See! See?!

  10. UW10 on June 5th, 2009 7:40 pm

    Our 3-8 hitters don’t have a single BA above .245, wow…

  11. Coolalvin206 on June 5th, 2009 7:42 pm

Our lineup is just brutal. You are telling me there isn’t anyone out there we can pick up that has a little pop?

This team is full of automatic outs.

  12. TCW on June 5th, 2009 7:59 pm

According to MLB Gamecast, Felix has already thrown two changeups! That’s a good sign… right?

  13. SequimRealEstate on June 5th, 2009 8:02 pm

I do not want anyone on our team who slides into first base. Stupid is as Stupid does.

  14. Nate on June 5th, 2009 8:03 pm

    WTF?

(radio feed) Rizzs just told about how Griffey has to tickle Ichiro! until he’s re-faced and sweating before each game???

    too much information!

  15. ballsoffire3 on June 5th, 2009 8:03 pm

That guy behind the Twin’s dugout on screen with right handed batters holding the “hi nana” sign needs to be pistol whipped already!

  16. Coolalvin206 on June 5th, 2009 8:05 pm

I’m surprised this team doesn’t hit and run more to generate runs.

  18. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 8:08 pm

A low pitch and Beltre didn’t swing! Is it the apocalypse? Is the end near?

  19. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 8:11 pm

    Do professional hitters take walks?

  20. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 8:11 pm

    Apparently not.

  21. RefusetoLose95 on June 5th, 2009 8:12 pm

In what inning will we hit double digits in men left on base?

  22. msb on June 5th, 2009 8:16 pm

    “will bunt for food”

  23. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 8:16 pm

11 outs. 4 strikeouts. Felix’s defense should buy him dinner every time he pitches. And strippers. Oh wait, he’s a married father of two. Never mind on that one.

  24. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 8:23 pm

Two outs. Rob Johnson batting. Due up for the Twins is…

  25. joser on June 5th, 2009 8:24 pm

So the M’s one and only national-telecast Fox game is tomorrow, and it’s Washburn vs the Twins?

  26. joser on June 5th, 2009 8:31 pm

tap tap Is this thing on?

I assume there’s a basketball game or something that everybody is off watching? I know it isn’t hockey….

  27. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 8:34 pm

It’s probably that it’s 10 degrees cooler than the past couple of days and just as sunny. I shouldn’t be here either. lol

  28. scott19 on June 5th, 2009 8:35 pm

I was thinking that too, Joser. My guess was a nice evening with a lot of folks out enjoying the slightly more refreshing weather…

  29. RefusetoLose95 on June 5th, 2009 8:36 pm

    it’s also friday.

  30. scott19 on June 5th, 2009 8:40 pm

So the M’s one and only national-telecast Fox game is tomorrow, and it’s Washburn vs the Twins?

And gee, it’s mighty generous of Faux Sports to let us have one game on Saturday Baseball this year, I tell ya.

  31. NJ Ms on June 5th, 2009 8:41 pm

I get that the Mariners are a bunting team this year but it sure would be nice to let Gut swing vs lefties since that is his strength

  32. msb on June 5th, 2009 8:47 pm

So the M’s one and only national-telecast Fox game is tomorrow, and it’s Washburn vs the Twins?

    Burninator vs Burninator

  33. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 8:52 pm

Did I see the Twins DH is hitting .174?

  34. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 8:54 pm

The announcers just said Felix is getting into the dangerous part of the Twins lineup. How come we don’t have a dangerous part in our lineup?

  35. msb on June 5th, 2009 8:56 pm

It’s dangerous … just in a different way.

  36. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 8:57 pm

YES! We get out of the inning!

  37. scott19 on June 5th, 2009 8:57 pm

How come we don’t have a dangerous part in our lineup?

‘Cause the M’s are still in “rebuild” mode.

  38. kyoko on June 5th, 2009 9:00 pm

I know we love bunting but WTF?

  39. Jordan 'JWay' Gillis on June 5th, 2009 9:00 pm

    Sweet bunt…

  40. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 9:00 pm

35,808? That’s all? Felix Day against a very beatable team on a beautiful Friday night? That’s all?

  41. Nate on June 5th, 2009 9:00 pm

    HAHAhaha.
    heh,

    sorry, continue.

  42. NJ Ms on June 5th, 2009 9:00 pm

our old bad knees DH is bunting for a hit?? Come on enough already

  43. naviomelo on June 5th, 2009 9:03 pm

    Base hit, please Johnson.

  44. NJ Ms on June 5th, 2009 9:03 pm

since he dropped it in the stands shouldn’t the runner be given third?

  45. scott19 on June 5th, 2009 9:04 pm

Actually, 35k is a halfway decent crowd…considering the Baltimore series was only pulling something like 16-18k during a warm spell.

  46. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 9:07 pm

We used to sell out games like this.

  47. scott19 on June 5th, 2009 9:10 pm

    Which is true…

  48. UW10 on June 5th, 2009 9:10 pm

We used to have a lineup that could put up more than 1 run against a pitcher with an era over 6

  49. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 9:11 pm

Which is also true. Somehow I think the two are connected in some metaphysical, cosmic way…

  50. JoeGeema on June 5th, 2009 9:13 pm

NJ Ms – Yes he should have been given 3rd base when the OF dropped the ball in the stands? This was missed by 4 umps, 1 M’s mgr and 2 FOX announcers

  51. scott19 on June 5th, 2009 9:13 pm

Meanwhile, Rizzs just threw out a plug for The Skillet, on the corner of First S. and Edgar outside the home plate entrance.

Wonder if Silva’s keeping himself busy running a vendor stand while he’s on the DL?

  52. eb on June 5th, 2009 9:14 pm

Felix throwing 97 mph in the 7th, that is a good sign.

  53. Nate on June 5th, 2009 9:15 pm

radio says Felix pitch #110 showed 100MPH on the scoreboard.

    Mmmm, spicy!

  54. scott19 on June 5th, 2009 9:16 pm

Wish they could get a few more runs to ice it for him.

  55. Axtell on June 5th, 2009 9:20 pm

Wow just heard RRS’s line for the night…11 runs? eek

  56. kyoko on June 5th, 2009 9:23 pm

Wish they could get a few more runs to ice it for him

Wish they could score a run at all.

  57. juneau_fan on June 5th, 2009 9:25 pm

Going to need to go extra innings so that Ichiro can keep his record? Or will he come up in the bottom of the 9th to win the game and keep the streak going?

  58. naviomelo on June 5th, 2009 9:28 pm

    Rowland-Smith: 4 2/3 IP, 14 H, 12 R, 12 ER, 3 BB, 0 K

  59. scott19 on June 5th, 2009 9:29 pm

On 14 hits and three walks in 4.2 innings…

Without checking the Rainiers’ schedule, I was thinking maybe they were playing the Sky Sox in Colorado Springs with a line like that…ouch!

  60. Scottdids on June 5th, 2009 9:30 pm

Everyone in the division has won tonight. We need a run!

  61. juneau_fan on June 5th, 2009 9:33 pm

Wow. From the ashes, comes the fire of a Lopez/Johnson hook up!

  62. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 9:33 pm

That sequence looked like something out of the Special Olympics. Lopez muffs the grounder so he throws to Johnson who is able to tag out the runner coming home. Interesting theater.

  63. NJ Ms on June 5th, 2009 9:34 pm

Is it bad that deep in the back of my mind I was wishing Johnson gets hurt on that play?

Way to hold on to it Rob

  64. Axtell on June 5th, 2009 9:34 pm

Good god Lopez, that’s a miracle that run didn’t score.

  65. UW10 on June 5th, 2009 9:40 pm

do we have the worst lineup of all-time? heh

  66. UW10 on June 5th, 2009 9:41 pm

    this is terrible

  67. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 9:41 pm

Do professional hitters hit into double plays?

  68. Sidi on June 5th, 2009 9:41 pm

Urk, and they couldn’t even string it out for another batter or two for Ichiro.

  69. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 9:42 pm

Doesn’t anybody know how to PLAY this game?!

  70. fiftyone on June 5th, 2009 9:55 pm

Ok, if Rob Johnson plays that kind of defense every night, he can post a .152 OPS and I will be still glad to keep him around.

  71. TJ Dirk on June 5th, 2009 9:58 pm

Well, Ichiro will get another shot

  72. UW10 on June 5th, 2009 9:58 pm

    our offense is completely inept

  73. JerBear on June 5th, 2009 10:00 pm

    Rob F***ing Johnson.

  74. Scottdids on June 5th, 2009 10:04 pm

    Oh Wlad what was that?

  75. UW10 on June 5th, 2009 10:04 pm

Why did we put Lowe in? ridiculous…

  76. AssumedName on June 5th, 2009 10:04 pm

so…what count does Mark run before walking them loaded?

    Brilliant IBB.

  77. cgmonk on June 5th, 2009 10:06 pm

    Now that’s some D.

  78. AssumedName on June 5th, 2009 10:06 pm

    Franklin is my hero.

  79. UW10 on June 5th, 2009 10:06 pm

  80. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 10:06 pm

DEATH TO FLYING THINGS COMES THROUGH!!!!

  81. juneau_fan on June 5th, 2009 10:06 pm

Thanks, Frankie. May get out of this inning yet.

  82. naviomelo on June 5th, 2009 10:06 pm

    Gutierrez!!

  83. 14limes on June 5th, 2009 10:08 pm

If I buy a jersey this year, I want DTFT’s name on the back.

  84. Sidi on June 5th, 2009 10:08 pm

That was great. My wife had just asked why they moved Ichiro out of center. He just justified my response.

  85. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 10:08 pm

    wE GOT MAUER! omg!

  86. Scottdids on June 5th, 2009 10:09 pm

Wak has earned no criticism for awhile after calling that suicide.

  87. juneau_fan on June 5th, 2009 10:09 pm

Defense rules tonight. If they win this thing, they can point to these plays that won the game, not whatever run scores.

  88. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 10:09 pm

We break up the suicide squeeze!

  89. MattThompson on June 5th, 2009 10:09 pm

The defense this inning has been something to see.

  90. 14limes on June 5th, 2009 10:09 pm

That pitchout just made me a Wakamatsu fan 4-evah.

  91. Axtell on June 5th, 2009 10:09 pm

Wow what a play by Guti…that ball was in the heel of his glove, how he held on as he crashed into that wall at full speed is beyond me.

  92. AssumedName on June 5th, 2009 10:10 pm

How is Endy not in LF?

  93. UW10 on June 5th, 2009 10:11 pm

    what the fuck balentien

  94. MattThompson on June 5th, 2009 10:11 pm

    Aaaand…pfffft.

  95. juneau_fan on June 5th, 2009 10:11 pm

Unfortunately, my statement also works for them losing this thing.

  96. 14limes on June 5th, 2009 10:11 pm

I wonder if the scorer can give Wlad the loss.

  97. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 10:12 pm

DAMN IT! After all those good defensive plays! Couldn’t we have had Chavez in left as a defensive replacement? Would it have helped?

  98. Sidi on June 5th, 2009 10:12 pm

Even the announcers pointing out Chavez not playing.

That did a great job of killing the momentum.

  99. msb on June 5th, 2009 10:12 pm

    what a weird inning.

  100. wabbles on June 5th, 2009 10:13 pm

OK, that Brandow Morrow bobblehead commercial reached new depths of stupidity and creepiness.

  101. tomas on June 5th, 2009 10:14 pm

That one’s on Wak. Balentien had just come thru the batting order and the Twins were obviously trying to hit the ball out to left. They did. It worked. Chavez should have been out there

  102. UW10 on June 5th, 2009 10:14 pm

a guy hitting .180 got a double against balentien…. sigh

  103. Sidi on June 5th, 2009 10:14 pm

Sorry, I shouldn’t say killing the momentum, killing the excitement/hope.

  104. naviomelo on June 5th, 2009 10:14 pm

    PH Griffey?

  105. Scottdids on June 5th, 2009 10:15 pm

2 horrible judgements by Wlad that inning. I don’t even blame Wak for not putting in Endy. Wlad simply screwed those up.

  106. BLYKMYK44 on June 5th, 2009 10:17 pm

Why pinch hit for Franklin…but not Cedeno…confusing

  107. Sidi on June 5th, 2009 10:17 pm

You know what this is? It’s all a big lead-up to an Ichiro game winning HR with two outs.

    Yep, that’s what it is.

  108. 14limes on June 5th, 2009 10:17 pm

    @naviomelo WIN

  109. Sidi on June 5th, 2009 10:18 pm

Actually, I guess it would have to be one out.

  110. juneau_fan on June 5th, 2009 10:18 pm

I was just thinking the same thing about that bobblehead ad, wabbles. It tops that freaky one with the gay troll hitting on…Ichiro’s bobblehead? The bad gay stereotype voice scares me so much I can’t focus on whatever player is being poorly reproduced as a bobblehead.

  111. juneau_fan on June 5th, 2009 10:20 pm

At least get a hit so there’s something to take away from this game, Ichiro

  112. BLYKMYK44 on June 5th, 2009 10:21 pm

Nathan’s nickname should be motoboat…the way he motorboats his lips while on the mound

  113. griffin on June 5th, 2009 10:23 pm

    peace out ichiro hit streak…

  114. 14limes on June 5th, 2009 10:24 pm

Boo. I’m burning my Wlad bobblehead in protest.

  115. naviomelo on June 5th, 2009 10:31 pm

    Bummer.

  116. Spookymilk on June 5th, 2009 10:45 pm

Nathan has Tourette’s, which is why he motorboats like that, and bobs his head constantly.

  117. scott19 on June 5th, 2009 11:23 pm

do we have the worst lineup of all-time?

Well, the M’s aren’t quite to the level of the 1962 Mets yet, but…

  118. TranquilPsychosis on June 5th, 2009 11:56 pm

I just got home. Am I watching a replay? (bottom of the 9th, Aardsma pitching with 2 down)

    Has Ichiro! gotten any hits?

  119. TranquilPsychosis on June 5th, 2009 11:59 pm

    OOPS!

That was the top of the 9th. Sorry.

  120. John D. on June 6th, 2009 11:18 am

5th: Balentien hits a ground-rule double to left

According to JoeGeema he should have been given 3rd base when the OF dropped the ball in the stands? This was missed by 4 umps, 1 M’s mgr and 2 FOX announcers

Had Lou -whose rule book knowledge is legendary–been at the helm, he would have educated the umpires, and Balentien would have been awarded third base.
