Game 56, Twins at Mariners

DMZ · June 6, 2009 at 12:26 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Blackburn vs the Sometimes New, Sometimes Improved, Frequently Frustrating Jarrod Washburn. 1:10

Sooo the M’s…
RF-L Ichiro!
1B-L Branyan
3B-R Beltre
DH-L Griffey
2B-R Lopez
SS-R Cedeno
LF-L Chavez
C-R Quiroz
CF-R Gutierrez

By way of contrast, here’s the Twins –
CF-L Span
DH-L Mauer
1B-L Morneau
3B-R Crede
RF-R Cuddyer
SS-R Harris
C-R Redmond
LF-R Young
2B-S Casilla

I always hope when I see D Young in the lineup for the Twins it’ll be Dmitri Young, because that would be hilarious.

Anyway, it’s surprising that the Twins are going to stack the lineup so heavily with lefties against a starter. Usually teams seek out ways to get the platoon advantage from the start, and are only held back by the need to look out for relievers later. Here the Twins either think their lefties will be immune to Washburn’s charm, or don’t care.

I wonder which it is.

    *left handed starter.

But yeah, that could be good things for us!

  2. Sports on a Schtick on June 6th, 2009 12:51 pm

To be fair, the lefty Twins bats are pretty freakin’ good.

  3. joser on June 6th, 2009 12:56 pm

according to Dave, Delmon Young is somewhere between hilarious and pathetic as well.

No Betancourt for the second day in a row. And we may see a couple of days of GQ (Guillermo Quiroz) since Johnson got pretty beat up last night (not so much the Tallet block and tackle as a foul ball he took off the instep). Johnson was doing a nice job with his arm last night but was his usual black hole at the plate, so that’s unlikely to make much difference to Washburn’s run support woes. But Washburn gets the A List outfield, so Wakamatsu gets basic credit for doing what he can to make his flyball pitcher look good.

I still can’t believe Gutierrez caught that ball last night in the palm of his glove at the wall and still managed to hang onto it. That guy may have the best hands in baseball.

  4. joser on June 6th, 2009 1:03 pm

Yeah. I mean, what kind of crazy platoon splits would you have to see to take Span, Mauer, and Morneau out of the lineup? Would Wakamatsu run out a lineup without Ichiro and Branyan?

But it is a little weird to have them stacked up back-to-back-to-back like that.

  5. DMZ on June 6th, 2009 1:17 pm

I’m certainly not saying they’d take them out. I’m saying almost every other manager in baseball staggers even three monster lefty bats a little, especially against a lefty starter.

  6. juneau_fan on June 6th, 2009 1:19 pm

Uh, I’m on FOX and it’s the Dodgers/Phillies. Anyone else have this problem? I swear they were doing warm ups of the Mariners, and then it’s this.

  7. kyoko on June 6th, 2009 1:25 pm

Anyone else outside of the US having problems with MLBTV today or is it just the carrier pigeons not getting through to New Zealand?

  8. Breadbaker on June 6th, 2009 1:29 pm

According to the Fox website, this game is getting broadcast less widely than ordinary M’s broadcasts. It’s not on in Anchorage, for instance.

  9. naviomelo on June 6th, 2009 1:30 pm

    Is the roof closed?

  10. themedia on June 6th, 2009 1:33 pm

Speaking of the top three, I haven’t heard much from you guys about the Mariners’ top three (in their current order, that is). I’m liking it so far. It makes sense to let Branyan, a great OBP guy, to hit high in the order, and Beltre has been pretty good lately. My only gripe is the guy leading off: who is this Ichiro guy, and why is he so high in the order? I mean, he didn’t even get a hit yesterday.

Seriously, though, do you guys like the current top-o-the-order construction?

  11. juneau_fan on June 6th, 2009 1:35 pm

Thanks, Breadbaker. My affiliate is from Anchorage because the cable company decided Juneau would care about the drive-by shootings and drunk drivers of Anchorage more than Seattle’s. So I don’t get the game. Great.

  12. Jay R. on June 6th, 2009 1:35 pm

    Yuni who?

  13. juneau_fan on June 6th, 2009 1:39 pm

Best part of getting stuck with the Phillies’ game? Seeing Greasy-Hat, Cupcake-Ass Blanton. I was just thinking the other day how great it was not to have to look at his petulant face since the A’s got rid of him.

  14. Sports on a Schtick on June 6th, 2009 1:44 pm

Raul “Nice Goin’(????) Ibanez with the sliding grab!

Yea Blanton sucks. Philly needs another starter for sure…

  15. DMZ on June 6th, 2009 1:49 pm

    Cupcake-ass?

  16. Jeff Nye on June 6th, 2009 1:49 pm

That was a pretty play by Cedeno, hopefully we’ll see Betancourt’s playing time continue to decrease.

I’m not sure he’s a long-term answer in the middle infield, but he’d be just fine as a stopgap until you find or develop a better player.

  17. juneau_fan on June 6th, 2009 1:53 pm

Doesn’t his ass look like a big soft cupcake to you?

And I have an unreasonable urge to see Ichiro kick said fluffy ass like a soccer ball and see Blanton fly off the mound in one perfect arc.

  18. confess on June 6th, 2009 1:53 pm

    These FOX broadcasts…

Sometimes I like hearing what announcing teams other than the FSN guys have to say about our team. But when the analyst has to pause and check his notes to remember that it’s Beltre at 3rd, I’d rather have the Sims and Blowers show back.

  19. juneau_fan on June 6th, 2009 1:58 pm

Checking back with Gameday. Oops! Got yourself in some trouble there, Washburn!

  20. cgmonk on June 6th, 2009 2:01 pm

The mic by home plate is so sensitive I could hear the single guy clapping in the front row.

  21. ndrfx on June 6th, 2009 2:02 pm

    What a horrible slide.

  22. Scottdids on June 6th, 2009 2:03 pm

For a moment there I was wondering how you could tell his marital status from his applause…

  24. DMZ on June 6th, 2009 2:10 pm

Yeah, I’m always disappointed when a crew’s beamed down from the mothership and they reveal how little they know about teams besides the Mets/Yankees/Red Sox.

  25. DMZ on June 6th, 2009 2:12 pm

Miller, of course, being the notable exception to that, as he knows freaking everything about everything.

  26. Jay R. on June 6th, 2009 2:13 pm

Apparently the Twins have a scouting report to jump on Washburn’s first pitch. Hopefully he will mix it up a bit.

  27. themedia on June 6th, 2009 2:18 pm

    Nice catch Jose.

  28. ndrfx on June 6th, 2009 2:19 pm

I’m glad we have Jose Lopez.

  29. Scottdids on June 6th, 2009 2:27 pm

Oh first the mandatory Raul Ibanez mentioning by Grace, now comes the ‘Will there ever be another 300 game winner?’ question.

Paint by numbers announcing at its finest.

  30. Lauren, token chick on June 6th, 2009 2:34 pm

So did anyone point USSMers to the amusing Slog post about Angie Mentink flossing her teeth? I sent it in, but for some reason I guess it didn’t strike Derek and Dave as essential material to assist in our fandom.

  31. DMZ on June 6th, 2009 2:35 pm

I found it too disturbing to pass on.

  32. Lauren, token chick on June 6th, 2009 2:38 pm

    Wuss.

  33. DMZ on June 6th, 2009 2:40 pm

I do think it nicely illustrates the difference between her, forced to wear a suit and a former actual baseball player, and, say, Nicole, who has a crew to feather her hair, work her eyelashes, and find tight sweaters for her to wear. Nicole presumably has someone floss for her so as not to risk damaging the smile.

  34. Jeff Nye on June 6th, 2009 2:44 pm

I googled out of curiousity, and now I regret it.

    Damn you, Lauren.

  35. ndrfx on June 6th, 2009 2:45 pm

    Ichiro!!!

  36. joser on June 6th, 2009 2:46 pm

Doesn’t his ass look like a big soft cupcake to you?

Well, whatever floats your boat. I’m not sure a woman’s ass has ever looked that way to me. But then I was never a more cushion for the pushin’ kind of guy.

  37. joser on June 6th, 2009 2:51 pm

I don’t think they have separate people for her teeth and eyelashes; I think Ms Double Zaloumis just has her entire face swapped in and out, “Westworld” style.

  38. DMZ on June 6th, 2009 3:00 pm

Joe Crede is one of the best defensive third basemen in baseball? Who knew! Besides Mark Grace.

  39. Carson on June 6th, 2009 3:01 pm

Uh. So, these guys are talking about Crede’s defense. “If there’s a better one I don’t know him.”

Then they bring up A-Rod. Couldn’t someone in the truck let them know the guy who has won the last two gold gloves is playing in this game today?

  40. DMZ on June 6th, 2009 3:05 pm

Actually, I’m not being fair. Crede’s a good defensive third baseman. I’m annoyed by:
    - the total strange neglect of Beltre, who’s in the game on the other side, and
    - the weird implication that all the fans are totally ignorant but people in the game know how awesome Crede he is

  41. DMZ on June 6th, 2009 3:06 pm

Yeah, and as you note, the implication that he’s *the best* which is clearly stupid

  42. juneau_fan on June 6th, 2009 3:07 pm

Thanks, joser, for making me look at Blanton’s ass way more than I’m comfortable with. It does seem to have tightened up a bit since his A’s days; probably from actually having to bat and run bases.

But it’s still way too womanly round. Not that there’s anything wrong with that….

  43. Breadbaker on June 6th, 2009 3:10 pm

the weird implication that all the fans are totally ignorant but people in the game know how awesome Crede he is

That is, I’m afraid, a mandated attitude on Fox national broadcasts. You get the feeling the orders come from Prince Rupert himself.

  44. ndrfx on June 6th, 2009 3:11 pm

    WHAT!? Holy Jose…

  45. Scottdids on June 6th, 2009 3:11 pm

Jesus.. Jose.. again?? Haven’t we talked about this before?

  46. Breadbaker on June 6th, 2009 3:12 pm

Is this the first time he’s had a left-handed reliever come in?

  47. Carson on June 6th, 2009 3:13 pm

I suppose Mark Grace won’t be praising Lopez’s defense now.

  48. joser on June 6th, 2009 3:14 pm

Lopez is averaging what, at least two Butterfingersâ„¢ plays per game?

  49. Carson on June 6th, 2009 3:18 pm

I still feel like Lopez understands that he sucks eggs, and feels the pressure. Just the facial expressions and such. Whereas it seems like Yuni cracks smirks when he screws up and goes back to business as usual.

Of course, I didn’t take body language for my foreign language credits, so I’m just guessing.

  50. joser on June 6th, 2009 3:19 pm

Phillies’ red is a slimming color. But you may want to ease off that scrutiny a bit, juneau_fan, at least until Alaska legalizes gay marriage.

Mike Sweeney is on mic for FOX today, they showed a clip of him asking Edgar for a personalized bat.

Nah. Fox is dictating it so they can cram in more erectile dysfunction ads.

  57. vj on June 6th, 2009 3:36 pm

I think that was good bullpen management exploiting the weakness of the Twins’ lineup noted by Derek in his post.

  58. Breadbaker on June 6th, 2009 3:37 pm

Clearly we must “pitch” because they can’t say we “field” after giving the “stat” that we have the most errors, and that after all is the only known fielding stat.

  59. jefffrane on June 6th, 2009 3:37 pm

    Ichiro!

  60. Breadbaker on June 6th, 2009 3:37 pm

    Okay, that was cool announcing.

What was? The whole “where Griffey ranks on the all-time doubles list” right before he hits a double?

    Jamie Burke we need you…

Your 2009 Seattle Mariners: We won’t contend, so we find other ways to make games exciting

  70. DMZ on June 6th, 2009 4:06 pm

We’re on our way to being the world coinflip champions.

  71. Breadbaker on June 6th, 2009 4:07 pm

I suspect you can buy the game used “Marineros” jerseys on the M’s websites right now, and a game-used Griffey jersey in a game where he hit a game-winning double on national TV ain’t gonna be cheap.

  72. Utis on June 6th, 2009 4:17 pm

So isn’t this way better than last year? Sure our offense sucks but the pitching keeps us in most games. It makes for fun games to watch. It’s like watching The Perils Of Pauline. And you know what? With the right moves (bring up some offensive help from Tacoma) this team could contend sooner rather than later.

Oh and Wash sure helped his rade value today. All in all a good win.

  73. naviomelo on June 6th, 2009 4:51 pm

8 runs allowed in the last 5 games? Wow.

We’re now the worst team in baseball at run creation and the #4 team in baseball at run prevention.

  74. BLYKMYK44 on June 6th, 2009 6:35 pm

The whole thing with Sweeney and Griffey makes it look ilke Sweeney is that annoying guy at the office who stops by your cubicle and won’t stop talking to you*. Is that what people mean by veteran presence?

*FYI, if you are in an office and you don’t know that guy…well then as the old saying goes…it is probably you.

  75. John D. on June 6th, 2009 8:05 pm

Is this the first time he’s had a left-handed reliever come in?

Just wondering: Why is it O.K. to pull MORROW in the interests of winning the game (and not being concerned about his youthful ego), but it wasn’t O.K. to pull Balentien yesterday, because of concern for his youthful ego?
(They’ll both be 25 next month.)

  76. msb on June 6th, 2009 8:10 pm

It has nothing to do with player egos, but with a FO, manager & coaching staff who first saw all these players in spring, and want to know what they have (or don’t have) Apparently, they still aren’t/were’t sure what Balentien will actually do as a player.

  77. msb on June 6th, 2009 8:14 pm

Why was Sweeney pulling up Griffey’s shirt at the end of the game?

Because the game ends and Griffey already has his shirttails out and his hat swapped back. He always has. Sweeney was just helping this time …

  78. msb on June 6th, 2009 8:16 pm

say, Nicole, who has a crew to feather her hair, work her eyelashes, and find tight sweaters for her to wear.

rumor has it that Mrs. Nicole Jones is expecting, so the tight sweaters may be temporarily retired.

  79. Breadbaker on June 6th, 2009 8:37 pm

(They’ll both be 25 next month.)

The cases aren’t comparable. For one thing, pulling a struggling righthander so as to put in a lefty to face a lefty is what all managers do and all relievers expect. It’s not notable in any sense (apart from the fact that we haven’t had any lefthanded relievers until now).

Second, as I pointed out in the game post for yesterday, putting in Endy for defense in the eighth would mean that if he pinch hit Griffey in the ninth (hopefully in a tie game), he wouldn’t have Endy (or really anyone else) to pinch run if Griffey got on base. Just because a choice in 20:20 hindsight looks bad doesn’t mean that it is bad. But it wasn’t some unthinking nondecision made with perfect knowledge that two balls would be available for misplay.

  80. thegroovewrangler on June 6th, 2009 9:42 pm

rumor has it that Mrs. Nicole Jones is expecting, so the tight sweaters may be temporarily retired.

Ah. When she was at the desk a few games back, I thought she looked a little baby bump-y.

  81. joser on June 7th, 2009 9:29 am

You know, I’m about as happy with this team as I expected to be in the offseason. The USSM folks were projecting about 78 wins, and I considered a .500 season to be very tough but within reach. That’s still the case, and it’s still a remarkable 20 win swing from last year. Considering the draft is still to come, we’ve had a lot of exciting, nailbiting one-run games, and Gutierrez at least makes flyball pitchers like Washburn something to look forward to rather than dread… that’s pretty darn good. It’s rather nice to feel like this team is on the upswing with potential and a plan, rather than aimlessly circling the drain without a prayer or a clue.

rumor has it that Mrs. Nicole Jones is expecting, so the tight sweaters may be temporarily retired.

I wouldn’t be so sure. The producers will just sit her behind a desk and, if her physiology follows the usual course, the low-cut sweaters will be strained all the more as her assets prepare for their real duties.

  82. Carson on June 7th, 2009 11:30 am

If anyone hadn’t noticed and would like to watch, North Carolina is playing on ESPN right now. They’re up 7-0, thanks in part to a three run homer by Ackley.
