I’m so glad we have these interleague games so we can face our hated rivals the Padres so often!

It’s sad that baseball has sold its soul to get more Boston-NY baseball matchups. I mean the 19 yankes/sawks gams a year aren’t enough, they have to get a handful of mets/sawks too.

It’s unbelievable that Selig would somehow be proud of scheduling that doesn’t have every team playing the same teams each. I mean it benefits the M’s getting to feast on the NL west, but if I was a fan of the Orioles or Blue Jays, I’d be more than upset that they have to play the Mets and Phillies every year.

  2. bookbook on June 23rd, 2009 6:41 pm

This ain’t the wonder of interleague play. It’s the stupidity of scheduling home-and-home series. There’s no one quite as bad at what they do as a major league schedule maker.

  3. naviomelo on June 23rd, 2009 7:14 pm

Does every team have a natural rival?

  4. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 7:16 pm

Does every team have a natural rival?

Every team except the Cubs. They have a supernatural, God, who will never let them win

  5. Lauren, token chick on June 23rd, 2009 7:18 pm

Waitasec… the Orioles and Blue Jays have to play the Mets and Phillies every year? That doesn’t sound right.

  6. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 7:19 pm

Interleague play is about three towns.

    Chicago, LA and New York.

As far as Bud Selig is concerned, the rest of the country can go f— themselves.

  7. SequimRealEstate on June 23rd, 2009 7:19 pm

Wakamatsu said Johjima will still be considered the No. 1 catcher but that Rob Johnson has earned more playing time and will be used more than just once every five or six days. Could be an interesting situation to monitor. Johnson’s catcher’s ERA of 2.65, still a highly debated stat, is the best in all of baseball at the moment among regular catchers.

    Johjima’s is 5.00.
From Bakers blog don’t you just love it.

  8. Sidi on June 23rd, 2009 7:19 pm

The Padres may be bad, but even I could see that letting the bat-boy hit wasn’t going to get the job done.

  9. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 7:21 pm

Rob Johnson has a nice tan.

  10. msb on June 23rd, 2009 7:21 pm

So Geoff is joining the guys at KJR who are obsessed with Rob Johnson’s catchers ERA

  11. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 7:22 pm

The Padres may be bad, but even I could see that letting the bat-boy hit wasn’t going to get the job done.

    David Eckstein joke?

  12. Willmore2000 on June 23rd, 2009 7:23 pm

Who are the orange people in the right field corner?

  13. Sidi on June 23rd, 2009 7:23 pm

I couldn’t resist one. I still have an irrational hatred for him.

  14. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 7:24 pm

Hearing Tony Gwynn’s name is just… weird. And kinda cool, too.

  15. naviomelo on June 23rd, 2009 7:25 pm

Well, let’s see. I guess these are the “obvious” ones. What about the rest? I guess two NL teams have to have multiple “natural rivals”?

    SEA-SD
    LAA-LAD
    TEX-HOU
    OAK-SF
    KC-STL
    MIN-MIL
    CLE-CIN
    CWS-CHC
    NYY-NYM
    BAL-WAS
    TB-FLA

  16. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 7:25 pm

Who are the orange people in the right field corner?

That is what I was wondering too.

  17. cgmonk on June 23rd, 2009 7:28 pm

Niehaus saying hello to the ladies on screen was funny.

  18. Sidi on June 23rd, 2009 7:28 pm

That one was smoked. I was certain it was a hit.

  19. juneau_fan on June 23rd, 2009 7:29 pm

I loved the ‘hello, ladies!’ tone in Dave’s voice when they showed the obligatory hot chicks in the stands shot. Old guy’s still got it.

  20. Sidi on June 23rd, 2009 7:31 pm

I’m already sensing that I need to convince my wife that midweek alcohol is ok…this inning did not feel good.

  21. Willmore2000 on June 23rd, 2009 7:31 pm

The orange people are freaking me out. It’s like a cult on a day trip out of the compound.

  22. Sidi on June 23rd, 2009 7:33 pm

    That or it’s the Dutch.

You can decide which is worse.

  23. Paul B on June 23rd, 2009 7:33 pm

Ichiro’s catch the most exciting thing so far tonight.

  24. msb on June 23rd, 2009 7:35 pm

Is it a group all wearing dayglo orange baseball caps? If so, it is one of the spring training tour groups– they seen to show up at a game together each year.

  25. Paul B on June 23rd, 2009 7:36 pm

I guess Branyan, Griffey and Beltre are healed up since they are all in the lineup.

    Any word on Woodward?

  26. Lauren, token chick on June 23rd, 2009 7:36 pm

I just wasted like twenty minutes trying to figure out whether the Orioles and Blue Jays really play the Mets and Phillies. Dammit, Axtell.

  27. msb on June 23rd, 2009 7:38 pm

Woodward told Baker he was doing better “he said his groin is feeling better, though not 100 percent. He said he told the coaching staff he could play, but isn’t in tonight’s lineup. Turns out he hurt in leading off first base after getting on early in Sunday’s game.

“The dirt was wet and at one point, I broke for second and kind of slipped,” he said. “That’s when I hurt it.”

  28. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 7:39 pm

Does Toronto still play Washington, since they used to be Montreal?

  29. Sidi on June 23rd, 2009 7:39 pm

Hmm, he was trying to pull a Griffey with the bat there.

  30. Paul B on June 23rd, 2009 7:39 pm

I see Quiroz was assigned to Tacoma. Not a big deal, but he does provide an emergency replacement.

And RRS was officially assigned to Tacoma. Too bad he didn’t throw better recently, or we would have seen him back in Seattle and Morrow in Tacoma.

  31. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 7:40 pm

Balentein has thrown a lot of bats accidentally…

  32. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 7:41 pm

Rob might want to consider swinging at the balls IN the strike zone.

  33. Paul B on June 23rd, 2009 7:41 pm

Well, at least Johnson didn’t hit into a double or triple play. Counting my blessings.

  34. Lauren, token chick on June 23rd, 2009 7:43 pm

Blue Jays play the Rockies apparently.

  35. Sidi on June 23rd, 2009 7:43 pm

henryv I guess it’s a good thing he isn’t likely to hit any relatives of the owner in Seattle.

  36. Lauren, token chick on June 23rd, 2009 7:43 pm

    PS: Dammit, Yuni.

  37. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 7:43 pm

Gaudin is getting a strike zone the size of Ricky Henderson’s ego.

  38. NJ Ms on June 23rd, 2009 7:45 pm

the Blue Jays vs Rockies series must be the macro beer maker rivalry

  39. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 7:45 pm

If Cedeno hits a grand slam here, everyone in the part wins a millions dollars.

  40. NJ Ms on June 23rd, 2009 7:45 pm

At least Cedeno knows what he is good at

  41. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 7:46 pm

the only way Cedeno can get an RBI!

  42. Lauren, token chick on June 23rd, 2009 7:46 pm

    I-CHI-RO! I-CHI-RO! Where’s the chant?

  43. Paul B on June 23rd, 2009 7:47 pm

Is the bottom third of this lineup, Johnson-Yuni-Cedeno among the worst you’ve ever seen?

    OPS+ of 54-61-11.

The pitcher tried to walk Yuni, but couldn’t. He was successful in coaxing Cedeno to accept a bases loaded walk, though.

  44. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 7:48 pm

    That’s a fair ball. Period.

  45. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 7:49 pm

Well, that ump doesn’t deserve to go to the playoffs. That was a huge and obvious f— up.

  46. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 7:50 pm

That chicken at Wendy’s looks freaking good.

  47. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 7:51 pm

Buhner’s triple was really deep into extra… but not 8 or 9.. like 6 or 7 is my guess.

  48. tkight on June 23rd, 2009 7:54 pm

Olson seems to really be getting hit hard — just fortunate to have batters hitting right at the M’s defense.

  49. Sidi on June 23rd, 2009 7:55 pm

    “We all appreciate it.”

    No. We don’t.

  50. Sidi on June 23rd, 2009 7:56 pm

Sorry, regarding the rally fries signs.

  51. Paul B on June 23rd, 2009 8:02 pm

Is the system slow tonight? Or is it just me?

  52. hark on June 23rd, 2009 8:03 pm

    Crap.

  53. Marinerfan4life on June 23rd, 2009 8:05 pm

    Wow what a shot!

  54. hark on June 23rd, 2009 8:07 pm

Anyone following the live graph for this game? You can see our win expectancy get cut in half with Yuni’s strikeout. And then Gonzalez’ swing just plummets it into San Diego’s favor (obviously).

I wonder how the graph would look if the first base umpire had been wearing glasses to see Ichiro’s clearly fair ball…

  55. hark on June 23rd, 2009 8:07 pm

    Agh, broken link. Sorry…

  56. Sidi on June 23rd, 2009 8:22 pm

Ah the Mariners. Helping us put “fun” in functional alcoholic for over three decades.

  57. msb on June 23rd, 2009 8:25 pm

    Hmm.

wonder what’s left up on the drinks shelf.

  58. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 8:27 pm

What % of games have the M’s scored 5 or more runs?

    30%? 20%? This probably isn’t going to go well…

  59. 300ZXNA on June 23rd, 2009 8:28 pm

Ugh, hopefully this inning will wake some people up with regards to Rob Johnson. Watching them run all over him was painful to watch . . . catcher ERA be damned, I want someone who will throw someone out every twice in a while.

  60. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 8:30 pm

You don’t run on catchers, generally, you run on pitchers. Some catchers are so bad that you can run wild on them, but most of the factoring of running is on the pitcher.

  61. fiftyone on June 23rd, 2009 8:31 pm

Rangers trail 7-2 to the juggernaut Diamondbacks. We’re likelier to pick up a game in the standings than to lose one. So drink up!

  62. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 8:32 pm

Note for instance that Felix gets run all over for a few games, but Washburn doesn’t.

  63. IdahoInvader on June 23rd, 2009 8:32 pm

Is there some secret reason we don’t pitch around Gonzalez? Just wondering since going right at him as resulted in five straight hits.

  64. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 8:33 pm

There aren’t two players in MLB I wouldn’t trade Cedeno and Yuni for at the moment.

  65. hark on June 23rd, 2009 8:34 pm

What % of games have the M’s scored 5 or more runs?

The Mariners have scored 5+ runs in 33.33% of their games (23 of 69). But we already knew they were the lowest scoring team in baseball, so…

  66. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 8:36 pm

I’ve stopped watching and started working again. Did they say who the cultists in orange were?

  67. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 8:40 pm

Remember when we had the bases loaded and no one out?

    That was cool.

  68. hark on June 23rd, 2009 8:43 pm

Ah the Mariners. Helping us put “fun” in functional alcoholic for over three decades.

I’m not into drinking, but I could use some deeper introduction this season to this “fun”ctional alcoholism thing as long as I’m watching the team. Any pointers?

  69. Sidi on June 23rd, 2009 8:43 pm

The woman clapping and cheering needs a swift kick to the…well, swift kicks until she has nuts to kick.

  70. SequimRealEstate on June 23rd, 2009 8:43 pm

OK is it hitters or batters? I always thought it was fine that Dave N called them hitters.

I think the biggest keys are never quite winding up in the hospital, and never quite burning down your house/workplace, no matter how bad the game was.

    That and some disposable income.

  72. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 8:46 pm

OK is it hitters or batters? I always thought it was fine that Dave N called them hitters.

Well, in the case of the M’s its “observers”.

  73. Sidi on June 23rd, 2009 8:47 pm

I think batters would be the more accurate term, as they do actually have a bat while they are at the plate.

  74. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 8:49 pm

I think batters would be the more accurate term, as they do actually have a bat while they are at the plate.

  76. Lauren, token chick on June 23rd, 2009 8:52 pm

Of course, sometimes one is functionally alcoholic (so much so that no one really uses the term “alcoholic”!) for decades and then, shazam! You have terminal cirrhosis. Happened to my dad, it can happen to you!

  77. Lauren, token chick on June 23rd, 2009 8:53 pm

  78. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 8:53 pm

Wow, booing from M’s fans. How unlike them.

At least they’re still awake. Usually the folks with season tickets from Bellevue in front of me have finished their sushi and dozed off by now.

  79. MedicineHat on June 23rd, 2009 8:54 pm

well…it is called a pinch hitter and a desgnated hitter…not pinch batter or designated batter. So I am inclined to go with hitter.

  80. hark on June 23rd, 2009 8:54 pm

    Oh Christ. Yuni.

  81. henryv on June 23rd, 2009 8:55 pm

not in the context of this game.

  84. hark on June 23rd, 2009 9:02 pm

Hm. Would have been nice if there were people on base in front of Junior. What’s that you say, the Mariners don’t have a batting lineup? (Except in front of Junior are Branyan and Beltre… sad.)

  85. juneau_fan on June 23rd, 2009 9:08 pm

Somehow, it’s appropriate that my screen’s gone black on the game. Thank you, FSN, for putting me out of my misery.

  86. Sidi on June 23rd, 2009 9:13 pm

Should we call Child Protective Services? It can’t be healthy for that baby to experience this at such a young age.

    I see–not on my TV though–that we’ve given up. Batista’s in.

  90. Lauren, token chick on June 23rd, 2009 9:24 pm

It’s true though… it has been quite a while since our pitchers got blown away. We haven’t given up more than 7 runs in a game since May.

  91. Marinerfan4life on June 23rd, 2009 9:33 pm

And to think with that Branyan bomb, it would be all tied up if it weren’t for the implosion of Olson and Corky…

  92. JerBear on June 23rd, 2009 9:34 pm

This whole game has been an epic fail by the Mariners. It’s just embarrassing.

Unlucky game, oh well. Junior seems to be finding his swing if his June splits are any indication (269/377/538), which is nice to see. Of course the small sample doesn’t tell us as much as we’d like.

On an ex-mariner note, is anyone noticing Joel Pineiro? Leading the majors in GB% coming into tonight, and throws a CG shutout – 1 strikeout, 3 fly outs, 22 ground outs (one of them a DP). When did this guy steal Brandon Webb’s sinker?

Dave Duncan is a HoF pitching coach, if there is such a thing.

My wife just emailed me that she saw Ken Griffey walking on Olive Street downtown with two of his kids an hour or so ago. I’m sure he’s in a good mood after last night! I told her she should have rolled down the windows and yelled “you’re a bum, Griffey!” Only kidding, of course. :)
