Game 99, Blue Jays at Mariners

Dave · July 27, 2009 at 6:06 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Hernandez vs Romero, 7:10 pm

Happy Felix Day.

Back spasms for Lopez and a day off for Branyan give us the following strange line-up.

Ichiro, RF
Gutierrez, CF (he should stay here, in my opinion)
Griffey, DH
Shelton, 1B
Hannahan, 3B
Johnson, C
Woodward, 2B
Saunders, LF
Cedeno, SS

Is Hannahan-Johnson-Woodward the worst 5-6-7 in baseball history? It might be.

Holy God! Hannahan and his .650 career OPS vs. southpaws in the five hole. Give me Dan Rohn or give me death…

  2. msb on July 27th, 2009 6:08 pm

Have a really good day at the plate, Guti

  3. msb on July 27th, 2009 6:14 pm

Take it with a big GM grain of salt, but Zduriencik (on the pregame) opined that he’d likely wait until the last minute to do anything.

I don’t mind watching the M’s play 20% of the time.

  5. seacard on July 27th, 2009 6:23 pm

I’m curious if this is the worst 3-9 in the history of baseball.

Holy God! Hannahan and his .650 career OPS vs. southpaws in the five hole. Give me Dan Rohn or give me death…

Then you’d at least have a better hitter in the five hole. He would just be sacrifice bunting in half his plate appearances.

I once saw Rohn have Justin Leone bunt a runner to 2nd in the like the third inning.

Here’s to hoping for a shutout from felix!

Jesus, I wish Felix could bat tonight…

  9. Breadbaker on July 27th, 2009 6:44 pm

Is Saunders not batting fifth because of some “don’t want to put pressure on him” crud? He’s a better hitter by far than any of the other options in this lineup to bat fifth. Why would you want to give more at-bats to Hannahan than Saunders?

  10. Bandit24 on July 27th, 2009 6:49 pm

He’s a better hitter by far than any of the other options in this lineup to bat fifth.

Agreed. The 8 spot is usually where you put your worst hitter. I don’t care if he just got called up. He’s a way better hitter than Hanahan, Johnson, and Woodward.

Yes, a very happy Felix day to all

  12. tkight on July 27th, 2009 7:05 pm

I would aruge this lineup (from the walk-off Clark drop) was worse:

    Thoughts?

  13. TheMsfan on July 27th, 2009 7:06 pm

When you see a middle of the order of that quality brought out there, it begs the question, how is this team ONLY 4 games over .500? the VORP, plus Sweeney’s leadership and the amount of times our relievers have slapped each other in the face, suggests this team should be around 96 and 3.

    Gross.

  23. Lauren, token chick on July 27th, 2009 7:19 pm

Good lord. I can’t believe Felix is wearing long sleeves. Do we need to worry about his sanity?

  24. Breadbaker on July 27th, 2009 7:23 pm

Felix comes from a place where these temperatures are perfectly normal. If he prefers long sleeves, it’s because he’s made a considered choice to wear them.

  25. Breadbaker on July 27th, 2009 7:24 pm

    Nice baserunning, Marco.

  26. jefffrane on July 27th, 2009 7:26 pm

Or it’s a superstition, like my nephew :)

  29. henryv on July 27th, 2009 7:34 pm

Funny thing is that last year Felix said he likes to pitch more when its cold.

And then he goes out and wears long sleeves when its 90.

You can be as crazy as you want, Felix, as long as you pitch like that.

  30. Lauren, token chick on July 27th, 2009 7:35 pm

Yeah, I’m aware Felix is from Venezuela, thx. He’s still nuts.

  35. joser on July 27th, 2009 7:51 pm

Perfectly counterbalanced by Niehaus giving an “oh my” for the perfunctory bikini-beach shot. SWEET.

At one point in some earlier game when Chevy was doing a promotion Niehaus mentioned he once had a Camaro. I think somebody was a bit of a player before he met Mrs Niehaus.

Funny thing is that last year Felix said he likes to pitch more when its cold.

Yeah, he said that in an interview with Drayer when the M’s were playing somewhere where it was stupidly hot (though not as stupidly hot as Texas, I don’t think) and she asked him if he liked the hot weather. He insisted he preferred cool weather better, and that was why he liked Seattle. He could’ve been kidding but he sounded sincere (Drayer was astonished and kept asking if he was serious). I have no explanation for how that gibes with the long sleeves, though. Maybe Felix has pitched in them so much in Tacoma and Seattle he just feels more comfortable. Or maybe he’s hiding some outrageous tats.

Which leads to the question could the pitcher who is pitching be the DH?

Of course. That’s what happens when you make one of those substitutions (or mistakes) that forces you to “lose” the DH.

  36. joser on July 27th, 2009 7:52 pm

Yahoo is posting the 1st run by Toronto as unearned… Did I miss something?

Runs off Felix are lucky; they’re never earned.

That said, what’s with the lack of K’s so far tonight, Mr H?

  69. henryv on July 27th, 2009 8:44 pm

What, you don’t like the shot from behind the plate where you can see nothing regarding pitch location or a ball hit in play?

My personal favorite is when they start with the angle behind home hidden by the ump, then during the swing they switch to a side angle behind the hitter.

  70. MsofEnchantment on July 27th, 2009 8:45 pm

Give Griffey a promotion to the front office already…the publicity stunt is over and it’s not boosting attendance when he hits in the 3 or 4 spot and strikes out. Shelton = everyday DH

  71. Tv Producer on July 27th, 2009 8:45 pm

Henryv, You mean a commercial ?

  72. MsofEnchantment on July 27th, 2009 8:46 pm

P.S. If Sweeney is in the lineup tomorrow (and hitting 4th) I may jump off a building.

  73. henryv on July 27th, 2009 8:46 pm

Chris Shelton is rocking the Safe! Can we officially release Mike Sweeney now? I mean, lets offer him a coaching job, or something like that… But its time to move on… NOW!

  74. Breadbaker on July 27th, 2009 8:46 pm

This inning really tells you how screwed up this lineup is. You have two big zeros in the between four guys who can hit, followed by three straight more zeros (starting with you, Jack).

  75. henryv on July 27th, 2009 8:48 pm

Henryv, You mean a commercial ?

No, I mean cutting from one angle to another during a swing. Not cutting “away”, I suppose, but rather switching cameras as the ball is coming towards home.

  76. Tv Producer on July 27th, 2009 8:49 pm

Henryv, sounds like you are talking about replays.

  77. henryv on July 27th, 2009 8:51 pm

    No, in game.

Ichiro’s foul ball in the last at bat was cut in the middle of the swing from a behind the plate angle to a side angle shot.

  78. henryv on July 27th, 2009 8:53 pm

Sorry, it was actually a third base line shot switching to an outfield shot during the 1-0 pitch that he fouled off.

  79. Tv Producer on July 27th, 2009 8:53 pm

Re: the behind the plate angle, some like it, some don’t. I can’t disagree with either.

Re: switching cameras during a swing, I’m not that seeing what you are describing, especially the part about switching to angle behind the batter.

  80. az sr softball on July 27th, 2009 8:53 pm

    Rob Johnson’s matador defense again.

  83. Tv Producer on July 27th, 2009 8:57 pm

  84. Kazinski on July 27th, 2009 8:57 pm

I’m worried that Shelton and Carp are going to be our two headed first baseman next year. I’d much rather have them be our two headed DH/backup 1b, and bring Branyan back.

What do you think a 33 year old ~.375wOBA, 35+HR, left handed first baseman having a career year is worth? My guess is somewhere north of 21m on a 3 year contract. I wonder if we could have pried more out of the Giants for Branyan than Cleveland got for Garko.

  85. henryv on July 27th, 2009 8:57 pm

Baseball is a funny game like that…

  95. TheMsfan on July 27th, 2009 9:04 pm

God forbid we take Felix out when five men had reach the plate, Don. Make sure that the game is out of reach for this piece of shit offense before you pull one of 3 people on this team who matters.

    I’m very frustrated.

  96. henryv on July 27th, 2009 9:04 pm

Well, we are playing with other team’s minor league bench players, so I guess you gotta expect this.

  97. mrw88 on July 27th, 2009 9:05 pm

This is probably the four ugliest cosecutive games I’ve seen in about fifteen or twenty years.

  99. Tv Producer on July 27th, 2009 9:06 pm

Jack Z better pull the trigger before the game tomorrow…we’ll figure out who to start. Book him the first flight to Milwaukee and get it done tonight. The way the last 4 games have gone, I’d hate to see Wash get shelled and dramatically reduce what we might get in return.

  101. TheMsfan on July 27th, 2009 9:06 pm

Well, on the bright side, we get to watch Rob Johnson and Chris Woodward bat now.

  104. henryv on July 27th, 2009 9:08 pm

I’m turning this game off. If I have to watch another Cedeno at bat, I’m going to lose my mind.

If we win another game before Felix’s next start, I’ll be shocked.

  105. juneau_fan on July 27th, 2009 9:09 pm

Was napping on couch through most of game, but some disturbance in the force awakened me to see this crap of the bed inning.

So let me get this straight. The pitchers love Johnson, he’s so great, makes them feel wonderful and calls a fabo game. But can’t hit or catch or throw.

Does it occur to them that those last qualities may help him win the game? If I were Saunders, after that great throw ends up rolling around under Johnson’s ass, I’d come up to Johnson in the dugout and bitch slap him. How many runs scored after that great defense?

  106. SequimRealEstate on July 27th, 2009 9:11 pm

Did not think I was going to go channel surfing with the King pitching. But his throw to short while off should have been caught and Rob Johnsons postioning was close to what I would expect from someone who is afraid of getting hurt.

Thanks joser for that Rays story. I looked it up online. The DH is optional. Don’t put a name in and the pitcher is in. I am sure most knew that. Just never thought of it before.

  107. MsofEnchantment on July 27th, 2009 9:11 pm

Woodward up, I’m going to guess…double play

  108. henryv on July 27th, 2009 9:12 pm

TV, I think what WSU meant was that you were responding very seriously to things we were just bantering and joking about.

But if you do work for FSN, keep up the good work.

Also, please find a way to “accidentally” mute Bill Kruger. Either that, or make Bill’s keys to the game as follows:

    1) Leave Bill at the Airport.
    2) Call airport and tell there is a tall lefthander with a bomb.
    3) Profit!

  109. Kazinski on July 27th, 2009 9:12 pm

He should have been out earlier in my opinion

Yeah, we should pull our #1 starter after 5 innings when he’s got a 4-3 lead, after a weekend where our bullpen got overworked and shelled. The fact that he got nickel and dimed to death after two quick outs, doesn’t buttress your point any.

  110. henryv on July 27th, 2009 9:14 pm

    Cedeno’s up, turning it off.

Expect to turn it on tomorrow and see Jack Wilson.

  111. Jake N. on July 27th, 2009 9:14 pm

  115. don52656 on July 27th, 2009 9:19 pm

Well, this might be a long, long losing streak. Any idea who is pitching in the rotation in place of Bedard?

    Gutierrez, too….?

  116. springdreamer on July 27th, 2009 9:19 pm

Gutierrez looked like I would have looked on that one.

  117. PWRSTROKIN on July 27th, 2009 9:23 pm

Was napping on couch through most of game, but some disturbance in the force awakened me to see this crap of the bed inning

    More like a black hole

  118. springdreamer on July 27th, 2009 9:24 pm

Is it me or do the Mariners just about always roll into a stretch like this that takes believers (like my mom) and crushes their souls? I have to convince her that it’s getting better, that they suck, but it’s going to get better.

  119. don52656 on July 27th, 2009 9:25 pm

This reminds me a little of 2007….surprisingly in contention and a game out of first in August, then lose 15 out of 17.

  120. MsofEnchantment on July 27th, 2009 9:25 pm

If we’re going to come back, it happens this inning.

  121. kenshabby on July 27th, 2009 9:25 pm

Goodbye cruel world, it’s over. Walk on by.

  122. Badtouch83 on July 27th, 2009 9:27 pm

I for one am really excited to see what the rest of this year brings they could play 250 ball the rest of the way as long as I get to see some of the young guys get a chance. Future looks brighter than I would have ever guessed coming into this year.

  123. MsofEnchantment on July 27th, 2009 9:28 pm

    Automatic out…

  124. springdreamer on July 27th, 2009 9:30 pm

Yes, it’s over….pay heed Junior. Give Carp a chance!

  125. don52656 on July 27th, 2009 9:31 pm

Gosh, it’s hard to imagine Washburn being on the team on August 1. If you look forward to 2010, it seems as if the outfield might be set, but the entire infield has a chance to be replaced, we’re going to need a catcher if Adam Moore isn’t ready, and we’ll need to find a #2 and #3 starter.

I have to believe that JackZ will begin the process this week, probably beginning with the infield rebuild.

  126. PWRSTROKIN on July 27th, 2009 9:32 pm

Junior to the DL with shoulder inflamation?

  127. MsofEnchantment on July 27th, 2009 9:33 pm

Junior to the DL with shoulder inflamation?

    ..or back spasms?

  128. PWRSTROKIN on July 27th, 2009 9:33 pm

    Oops Freudian slip…..meant “knee” inflamation

  129. Jack Howland on July 27th, 2009 9:35 pm

I’m thinking that the Brewers are no long contenders and have no interest left in Washburn.

  130. MsofEnchantment on July 27th, 2009 9:35 pm

If the M’s were an old dog, it would be time to take it behind the barn.

  131. PWRSTROKIN on July 27th, 2009 9:37 pm

    WTG Timmy Lincecum

  132. msb on July 27th, 2009 9:38 pm

To the farm. You take the old dog to “the farm.”

  133. Liam on July 27th, 2009 9:40 pm

I’m thinking that the Brewers are no long contenders and have no interest left in Washburn.

The Rays are also in danger of falling too far behind.

  134. PDMZ on July 27th, 2009 9:41 pm

How about Marco Scutaro? Three hits tonight (so far). He is a right-handed Ichiro.

If you look at FanGraphs.com, you’ll see he’s last in the league in O-Swing % (Chasing pitches out of the strike zone) and is first in Contact % (% of time making contact when he swings).

His hitting stats don’t make him an All-Star, but this is the kind of hitter that every team wants.

  135. PWRSTROKIN on July 27th, 2009 9:44 pm

Just say no to the wave

  136. Breadbaker on July 27th, 2009 9:45 pm

Another terrible defensive play by Rob Johnson, and of course no comment from the TV booth.

  137. juneau_fan on July 27th, 2009 9:47 pm

It feels like that breakup, when you’re told, it’s not you, it’s me, and it’s really you, of course, as the opposing teams are scoring double digits.

  138. don52656 on July 27th, 2009 9:47 pm

My God, another total team collapse….it’s like no one is paying attention on defense. Another game with double-digit runs allowed.

    Disappointing.

  139. Breadbaker on July 27th, 2009 9:49 pm

it’s like no one is paying attention on defense.

Other than Chris Shelton. He did a good job of backing up there.

  140. don52656 on July 27th, 2009 9:49 pm

Plus, is there anyone in the bullpen, other than Aardsma, who will be able to pitch tomorrow? White sure won’t be available.

  141. MsofEnchantment on July 27th, 2009 9:49 pm

Z should just go into the locker room and threaten to trade everyone…just threatening a few doesn’t seem to be working

  142. Colm on July 27th, 2009 9:52 pm

Hmmm, I’ve paid almost no attention to the Mariners since Friday, because I’ve been taking my main squeeze out on dates (the kids were out of town this past weekend) and, frankly, the arsehole has fallen out of the Mariners’ world.

42 runs coughed up in four games? Jesus…

  143. Colm on July 27th, 2009 9:53 pm

Well, season, not world. If we’d traded Felix and Ichiro for Jeff Francoeur, that would have been worse.

  144. don52656 on July 27th, 2009 9:53 pm

M’s have allowed runs in 17 of the last 29 innings.

  145. TomTuttle on July 27th, 2009 10:07 pm

Okay, seriously, how the crap have we regressed to this in just 4 days?

    This is embarrassing.

  146. Lauren, token chick on July 27th, 2009 10:09 pm

SEE, Angels? Indians aren’t such a pushover after all.

  147. TomTuttle on July 27th, 2009 10:10 pm

Clearly whatever trade rumors have been out there and this whole crap of whether or not we would be buyers or sellers have gotten in this team’s heads.

Z just needs to make his moves already so we can get on with the last 2 months of this year.

  148. Coolalvin206 on July 27th, 2009 10:14 pm

I think I see a new counter at Safeco of how many straight games we have allowed 10+ runs.

What is it at now? 4 …

  149. Kazinski on July 27th, 2009 10:20 pm

Tonight may be a blessing in disguise, what better way to highlight Washburn’s enormous value to a contender than coming in tomorrow night and stopping this horrendous losing streak? OK, horrendous is a little much for just a 4 game streak, but it’s gets extra points for the abysmal quality of the losses.

  150. WSU_Dave on July 27th, 2009 10:30 pm

I can’t believe we have given up 10+ runs 4 games in a row. What an implosion… yuck.

  151. TheMsfan on July 27th, 2009 10:33 pm

Unless he magically gets dealt before 10 pm EST, tomorrow is the most important game of the season. We should all be hoping for a 1 0 win, or maybe a loss, i just can’t root against this team unless theres a Strasburg on the line (and you saw how that goes).

We need a great start from Washburn, we need Roy Halladay to say he cant imagine leaving Canada, and we need Cliff Lee to…I dunno, do something anti good. Come on Jarrod, we NEED this.

  152. henryv on July 27th, 2009 10:42 pm

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that Washburn doesn’t pitch for us tomorrow.

Also, you guys should totally get the Wii Active. That thing is incredible.

  153. guschiggins on July 27th, 2009 11:19 pm
