Game 107, Mariners at Royals

DMZ · August 5, 2009 at 4:22 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Washburn 2 vs Davies. Can he out-perform Washburn 1? Shouldn’t be hard.

Bedard’s going badly, per Baker.

No lineups yet, which is annoying.

And he says that Aardsma is not available tonight. For a medical reason that sounds painful.

  2. MedicineHat on August 5th, 2009 4:37 pm

    From Rototimes:

Erik Bedard, P, Seattle Mariners Wednesday 8/5, 6:31 PM CT

Erik Bedard will undergo an MRI Friday after experiencing soreness in his ailing left shoulder during Tuesday’s pen session, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Skipper Don Wakamatsu noted that the soreness in Bedard’s shoulder is not as severe, but he will have an MRI as a precaution not to risk further injury. He will likely require a rehab assignment once he is deemed fit to pitch.

Very excited to watch Wash 2.0 tonight, and see how he does.

The Mariner’s twitter account always posts the lineups before the game. I subscribe through RSS to get the latest news from them.

    Branyan
    Lopez
    Griffey
    Beltre
    Gutierrez
    Wilson
    Johnson
    Saunders

  6. Mike Snow on August 5th, 2009 4:41 pm

Apparently Washburn 2 and Washburn 1 also have the same personal catcher.

  7. AssumedName on August 5th, 2009 4:53 pm

I really didn’t need to read about tickling and butt boils. But I might re-read it about the time Lowe comes in to close. Love the guy when he’s on, but he gives me a case of nerves.

  8. theandyduke on August 5th, 2009 4:53 pm

Really hope French’s slider is ‘on’ tonight, because when it is, he can be straight-up NASTY

  9. NoStars on August 5th, 2009 5:26 pm

    Wash 2.0 > Wash 1.0

  10. flashbeak on August 5th, 2009 5:27 pm

Oh, Griffey, how you make me want to pull my hair out.

  11. jordan on August 5th, 2009 5:30 pm

MLB banned the bullpens war helmets…. how freakin’ stupid.

  12. finndawg on August 5th, 2009 5:32 pm

91 mph fastball? I thought he couldn’t get it up that high? Not bad…

  13. theandyduke on August 5th, 2009 5:32 pm

MLB banned the bullpens war helmets…. how freakin’ stupid.

yep, and now they go back to being all generic and whatnot.

  14. Bandit24 on August 5th, 2009 5:35 pm

Yeah, I remember the reports saying he was a soft-tossing lefty who topped out at 87. I haven’t seen a fastball under 90 so far and hes even hit 92 a couple of times…….What’s up with that?

  15. Jeff Nye on August 5th, 2009 5:35 pm

I thought the helmets were pretty dumb, but I wonder what their justification is.

  16. finndawg on August 5th, 2009 5:36 pm

With a 92 mp fastball, that certainly changes my opinion of him a bit…can’t really call him a soft-tossing lefty

  17. theandyduke on August 5th, 2009 5:39 pm

I thought the helmets were pretty dumb, but I wonder what their justification is.

I’m more curious if it was something the league looked into on their own(not likely) or if another manager/gm/owner complained(more likely).

  18. finndawg on August 5th, 2009 5:39 pm

Well you knew Yuni would be first-pitch swinging…good to see he hasn’t changed any

  19. argh on August 5th, 2009 5:40 pm

I probably just have a filthy mind, but the advertisement behind the Royal’s home plate for Lumber Liquidators featuring their toll-free number (1-800-HARDWOOD) strikes me as potentially less than family friendly. I definitely want one of their t-shirts, though.

  20. naviomelo on August 5th, 2009 5:42 pm

I think the Royals gun is a little off. Didn’t they have Batista throwing 95 last night, Lowe throwing 99, and Aardsma throwing 98?

  21. jordan on August 5th, 2009 5:42 pm

    What the hell was that?

  22. theandyduke on August 5th, 2009 5:43 pm

I got a good chuckle when Dave talked about Yuni’s abilities to draw walks.

  23. MsofEnchantment on August 5th, 2009 5:43 pm

Did Yuni really just have a 9 pitch AB? Pigs can fly…

  24. Paul B on August 5th, 2009 5:43 pm

Yuni didn’t swing at pitches out of the strike zone.

There must be an airborne pig somewhere.

  25. Hud67 on August 5th, 2009 5:49 pm

This is the type of offense I was expecting from these 2 teams.

  26. theandyduke on August 5th, 2009 5:51 pm

    nice piece of hitting there

  27. finndawg on August 5th, 2009 5:51 pm

Take that all you Rob Johnson haters!

  28. red_devil20 on August 5th, 2009 5:51 pm

I find it strange that R. Johnson only hits doubles. If he was only better, we’d think of him as Edgar… wait…

  29. Jeff Nye on August 5th, 2009 5:52 pm

Here we go, beating the Catcher ERA dead horse again.

  30. theandyduke on August 5th, 2009 5:53 pm

I know he was for sure home, but could Rob have ran home any slower?

  31. MsofEnchantment on August 5th, 2009 5:53 pm

    Saunders! Coming around big fella.

  32. Hud67 on August 5th, 2009 5:55 pm

We may have our answer for left field.

  33. theandyduke on August 5th, 2009 5:55 pm

    that was a great Curveball.

  34. juneau_fan on August 5th, 2009 5:58 pm

Here we go, beating the Catcher ERA dead horse again.

I had to change the channel for those minute. I don’t want to kick my TV in.

I know he was for sure home, but could Rob have ran home any slower?

So he’s just as leery of a collision at the plate as a runner as he is as a catcher?

  35. G-Man on August 5th, 2009 6:00 pm

3 consecutive AB’s w/ RBI’s foir Russell, says Niehaus, ignoring Branyan’s first AB today.

  36. theandyduke on August 5th, 2009 6:05 pm

Like I said last night ‘So much for that lead’

I hope this game isn’t like last nights(well, I’ll take the end result)

  37. MsofEnchantment on August 5th, 2009 6:05 pm

Doh, that looked like Washburn 1.0. C’mon Luke, right the ship and keep your pitches down.

  38. Techno_Viking- on August 5th, 2009 6:05 pm

MLB banned the bullpens war helmets…. how freakin’ stupid.

I know, a little stupid. What’s their justification?

  39. Hud67 on August 5th, 2009 6:07 pm

That Butler has been on fire the last couple of days. Why couldn’t he save that for the Angels.

  40. AssumedName on August 5th, 2009 6:10 pm

MLB banned the bullpens war helmets…. how freakin’ stupid.

I thought the article just said they couldn’t wear them. I’ve always thought that helmet schtick was okay for home games, but just inviting ridicule on the road.

  41. bilbo27 on August 5th, 2009 6:10 pm

Corcoran just signed with the Astros and has been assigned to their AAA club.

  42. Techno_Viking- on August 5th, 2009 6:11 pm

    Yay! Beltre’s first return hit.

  43. theandyduke on August 5th, 2009 6:14 pm

    nice!

  44. theandyduke on August 5th, 2009 6:15 pm

    WOO!

The M’s bunting had been superb this series.

  45. Hud67 on August 5th, 2009 6:15 pm

Let’s go death, steal that base.

  46. theandyduke on August 5th, 2009 6:17 pm

    we’ll gladly take it.

  47. JMHawkins on August 5th, 2009 6:20 pm

    Wow, what a sloppy game.

  48. theandyduke on August 5th, 2009 6:20 pm

who needs an offense when you have friends like KC?

  49. hendu72 on August 5th, 2009 6:21 pm

    nice approach Saunders

  50. bilbo27 on August 5th, 2009 6:22 pm

It’s fun playing teams that will beat themselves if you let them.

  51. red_devil20 on August 5th, 2009 6:23 pm

I know this is KC, who, by definition, suck the proverbial fat one, but it’s nice to see consecutive games where the opposing starter has thrown a TON of pitches early.

  52. MsofEnchantment on August 5th, 2009 6:23 pm

The M’s are stringing hits and good ABs together (until Lopez and Griffey). Is it the opposition or something more?

  53. juneau_fan on August 5th, 2009 6:24 pm

ITA, red_devil. I came home to Wilson striking out, but after 10 pitches. Thank you! I’ll take that over a groundball out after two pitches any day.

  54. sodomojo_1 on August 5th, 2009 6:24 pm

I keep having to tell myself to ignore my thoughts that our team is amazingly good, and remember that we are playing the Royals

  55. theandyduke on August 5th, 2009 6:24 pm

I know this is KC, who, by definition, suck the proverbial fat one, but it’s nice to see consecutive games where the opposing starter has thrown a TON of pitches early.

I know! We are completely burning through KC’s pitchers 1 and half games into this series.

  56. Hud67 on August 5th, 2009 6:24 pm

I think we are picking on Willie F. in right.

  57. Techno_Viking- on August 5th, 2009 6:27 pm

Well aren’t we looking uncharacteristically offensively potent. It’s safe to say Davies sucks but our offense has done worse against worse pitchers. Fun stuff!

  58. Hud67 on August 5th, 2009 6:28 pm

WOW, stick a fork in Davies, he is done. The problem for KC is that the bullpen is worse. Let’s hope Branyan goes on another hot streak.

  59. red_devil20 on August 5th, 2009 6:28 pm

I’ll be interested to see whether or not this “new approach” can be continued when we meet real pitchers. We’ve had a few guys with good approaches all year, and we appear to be adding more as it goes along. It’s strange to see, but I like it.

  60. Paul B on August 5th, 2009 6:28 pm

I watch these Royals and it brings back memories of the M’s the last few seasons.

I am so glad we have a front office that gets it.

  61. MsofEnchantment on August 5th, 2009 6:30 pm

Nothing like a series against the Royals to pad your run diff numbers. What a depressingly terrible franchise, almost makes Bavasi…no I won’t say it.

  62. theandyduke on August 5th, 2009 6:30 pm

    nice inning Seattle!

  63. flashbeak on August 5th, 2009 6:30 pm

Did we really just bat around? I didnt know the Royals were that terrible.

  64. MsofEnchantment on August 5th, 2009 6:31 pm

We need a real cleanup hitter.

  65. TomTuttle on August 5th, 2009 6:32 pm

I can not believe Selig banned the spartan helmets, someone beat him down PLEASE!!

I’m so irate about this, at $17.5 million per year, he’s broken the 3-way tie as to who the worst pro sports commish is.

    What a loser.

  66. TomTuttle on August 5th, 2009 6:32 pm

At least the M’s are piling it on against the Royals.

  67. flashbeak on August 5th, 2009 6:33 pm

Griffey would be the person to go 0-2 in our big inning.

  68. hendu72 on August 5th, 2009 6:34 pm

I didn’t expect this much velocity out of French. He looks to have a pretty decent change as well.

  69. Techno_Viking- on August 5th, 2009 6:34 pm

WOW! 8 runs in 4 innings! Have we done that at all this year? The uh… the Royals um… the Royals are baaaddd. (In a bad way.)

  70. hendu72 on August 5th, 2009 6:35 pm

Should have been a meaningless solo shot

  71. ndrfx on August 5th, 2009 6:35 pm

…unbelievable. First Guti loses it, then Ichiro slows down, resumes pursuit and calls for it AFTER Guti had re-acquired it and looked on track…SAD.

  72. bilbo27 on August 5th, 2009 6:36 pm

Washburn 2 looks a lot like Washburn 1… only with run support. :-)

  73. TWownsU on August 5th, 2009 6:37 pm

That was unfortunate and very weird.

  74. juneau_fan on August 5th, 2009 6:39 pm

I sometimes wonder if playing a sloppy team makes you play sloppy.

  75. MsofEnchantment on August 5th, 2009 6:40 pm

I think French had to sit too long during the top half.

  76. Techno_Viking- on August 5th, 2009 6:43 pm

That is not pretty first the outfield shenanigans then French not keeping the fastball down. EWWWW

  77. flashbeak on August 5th, 2009 6:46 pm

I have this feeling that the Angels are going to have a monumental collapse via Guerrero´s return.

  78. bilbo27 on August 5th, 2009 6:48 pm

On the plus side, has anyone noticed the M’s offense isn’t nearly as bad as it was not too long ago? I’m not just talking about what’s happened against crappy KC the last two days. I’m talking about in general. They still aren’t good, but are now seeing a ton more pitches. In addition, Ichiro!, Gutierrez! (Yes, he gets an exclamation point too), and Branyan obviously are good. Wilson is a major upgrade over Betencourt and Cedeno. Beltre (once he gets his timing back) is good. Johnson has somehow started to hit the last month and a half (and has a very nice OBP over that span). Saunders/Langerhans are both major upgrades over Wlad. Lopez contributes and Griffey, well, the opposing pitchers are afraid of him for some reason…

I think offensively we’ve gone from ultra-suck to looks good compared to ultra-suck, but not so much compared to many others. Still though, a nice improvement mid-season. I love the JZ era. :-)

  79. Techno_Viking- on August 5th, 2009 6:52 pm

    Good ol’ Kingdome memories!

  80. ndrfx on August 5th, 2009 6:52 pm

That was a Bobcat. Glad nobody picked it up.

  81. TWownsU on August 5th, 2009 6:53 pm

    Where’d the cat come from?

  82. jefffrane on August 5th, 2009 6:57 pm

    His mom?

That was one absolutely terrified and panicked cat.

  83. Paul B on August 5th, 2009 6:57 pm

Once that cat found itself out on the field, it was scared from all the noise, and it had nowhere to hide, there being nothing on the field to get under or on top of.

Good thing they opened the outfield door.

In other items, why is Jack’s adventures in a warehouse store supposed to make me want to buy his burgers? Never mind, don’t bother explaining it, probably better that I don’t get it.

  84. msb on August 5th, 2009 6:59 pm

    pretzelspretzelspretzels.

  85. Techno_Viking- on August 5th, 2009 7:01 pm

“Pretzel party at Jack’s house!” …I think it’s kinda funny…

  86. Lauren, token chick on August 5th, 2009 7:02 pm

Haha. Big barrels of anything are funny.

That was no bobcat, puhleeeeze. But an amusing interlude.

  87. bilbo27 on August 5th, 2009 7:02 pm

Whitesox now up 5-1 on the Halos :-) . Looking like TB is going to knock off the Redsox. Possible 8 and 6.5 out respectively on the division/wild card after today. Playoffs here we come. ;-)

  88. Jeff Nye on August 5th, 2009 7:03 pm

  89. Oscar on August 5th, 2009 7:06 pm

Where can I listen to the games via radio?

  90. G-Man on August 5th, 2009 7:08 pm

Corcoran just signed with the Astros and has been assigned to their AAA club.

Roy is such a good ol’ Southern boy, I figured he’d like to be down there.

Isn’t it possible that his agent had feelers out to teams as soon as he was DFA, if not earlier? WQould that be kosher, even though the M’s still owned him?

I know, you say that Roy isn’t worth any team talking about before he’s a free agent.

  91. bilbo27 on August 5th, 2009 7:09 pm

“Where can I listen to the games via radio?”

If you mean the radio broadcast on a radio receiver, then any of these radio stations here. Otherwise mlb.com has a nice package for about $15 a season to be able to listen to all mlb radio broadcasts online.

  92. Techno_Viking- on August 5th, 2009 7:10 pm

Olivo V.S. Ichiro! hmm I wonder who’ll win.

  93. Lauren, token chick on August 5th, 2009 7:12 pm

    Classic Lopez junkball RBI

  96. MsofEnchantment on August 5th, 2009 7:13 pm

    I’m guessing…flyball to right field.

  97. leon0112 on August 5th, 2009 7:15 pm

Watching Junior bat makes me ask why Guti is batting sixth while Junior is batting fourth. I am sorry to pile on the topic, but it does not make sense to me.

  98. red_devil20 on August 5th, 2009 7:16 pm

Just so y’all know, Kansas City might have made Baker go off his rocker, egad.

Cmon wheres your faith. Cheap 10ft. infield hit. DUH!

  101. Breadbaker on August 5th, 2009 7:18 pm

So much for the six run lead. What is this man doing on a major league roster?

  102. bilbo27 on August 5th, 2009 7:19 pm

You could also ask why Beltre is batting 5th when, as bad as Griffey has been, Beltre has been slightly worse offensively this year. And of course Beltre is likely to be awful for the next week or so while he gets his timing back anyways. Gutie should be ahead of both of them.

  103. MsofEnchantment on August 5th, 2009 7:21 pm

Cmon wheres your faith. Cheap 10ft. infield hit. DUH!

  105. Liam on August 5th, 2009 7:28 pm

This game has slowed down so much with Batista in.

  106. Breadbaker on August 5th, 2009 7:31 pm

Would it be considered rude if I showed up on Saturday with a “Please DFA Beltre” t-shirt?

    Yes.

Well, Lauren is here, and so’s Yuni….

I guess Batista was just going to wait for everyone to fall asleep, then he’d sneak off the mound back to his hotel room.

  113. msb on August 5th, 2009 7:41 pm

I believe you might even be met with open arms should you wear the amended shirt.

  114. Liam on August 5th, 2009 7:41 pm

Dave made a good argument before the season that the Mariners should just cut Batista loose. It’s now August and he is below replacement level. Are we still hoping that someone is going to take him off our hands?

  115. natebracy on August 5th, 2009 7:44 pm

What’s the scoring there? 1B FC?

  116. MsofEnchantment on August 5th, 2009 7:44 pm

  117. MsofEnchantment on August 5th, 2009 7:48 pm

Jack Z is hoping to put off having to run to 7-11 for a six pack.

    Angels lost. *blissful sigh*

  119. Paul B on August 5th, 2009 7:50 pm

That was some wild baserunning and throwing there. I thought the Royals were going to get a baserunner at second, nope, then at the plate, nope, then at third, nope!

    Laugh out loud funny.

  120. bilbo27 on August 5th, 2009 7:56 pm

“Are we still hoping that someone is going to take him off our hands”

Well, he’ll probably clear waivers and JZ did manage to get something for Yuni so… ;-)

HAHA What the hell is the guy behind home plate rubbing his belly for! HAHAHA

  122. juneau_fan on August 5th, 2009 8:05 pm

    Batista and now Garrett Olson?

Yikes, we’re going to need all these runs!

  123. MsofEnchantment on August 5th, 2009 8:07 pm

This might be the only game for awhile that we’re winning by more than 2 runs. Gotta get those guys innings.

    Hannahan at short!

  125. juneau_fan on August 5th, 2009 8:08 pm

    Intriguing!

    Hannahan in as the SS!

  126. juneau_fan on August 5th, 2009 8:14 pm

And of course the ball finds him and goes on by.

    Ugh to Garrett Olson.

  127. Breadbaker on August 5th, 2009 8:14 pm

Well, he’ll probably clear waivers and JZ did manage to get something for Yuni so…

Any general manager who claimed Miguel Batista off waivers would immediately be institutionalized. “Probably”????

  128. MsofEnchantment on August 5th, 2009 8:16 pm

Batista is bad, but Yuni is waaaaayyyyy worse.

  129. Breadbaker on August 5th, 2009 8:18 pm

We used to have a shortstop who couldn’t make that play.

  130. juneau_fan on August 5th, 2009 8:26 pm

    AEEII!!

  131. TomTuttle on August 5th, 2009 8:31 pm

Yuniesky Betancourt is the last hope for the Royals.

    Hahahahahaha, that’s a good one.

  132. Rick L on August 5th, 2009 8:31 pm

  133. iHam on August 5th, 2009 8:31 pm

ok Yuni…this is when you swing at anything, no matter how far outside the strike zone it is…

We used to have a guy who batted like that.

    Oh. It’s over. How anti-climatic.

    Only 8 back everyone! ;)

…or you could just stare at them as they zip past you…that worked too…

But what happened to the cat?

    He’s pitching on Friday.

    “Only 8 back everyone!”

6.5 out of the wild card and it looks like it’s going to be 3.5 back from Texas. Would be nice to finish second (or obviously have the odds go out the window and see the Halos tank and the M’s take the division ;-) ). But I’d settle for 2nd and that one just might be do-able.

    Classic Niehaus quote tonight:

    “Whoa look at that……A Squirell,…..no, that’s a CAT”

Small sample size of course, but Betancourt is now at 154/176/277 since the trade (70 plate appearances). I hoped the the trade might clear his head, but it looks like he’s two months away from being out of major league baseball.

“I hoped the the trade might clear his head”

He was too far gone to just flip a switch and have everything turn around for him. They are working with him on having an actual approach at the plate and he’s buying into it now (he see’s the writing on the wall finally). And supposedly he’s being diligent about putting in extra work both defensively and offensively off the field. However, he can’t change overnight.

Best case scenario for him is to keep putting in a lot of work for the rest of the season then go down to winter ball (if he can, given visa issues with being a Cuban defector and all; not sure what his residency papers look like and all that), then keep working on stuff there, then hope he has a good spring training and he can re-claim some of his former defensive prowess. They aren’t going to just cut him loose given the money owed, so he’ll get his chances. Assuming he puts in the work, he has at least a chance of salvaging his career.

Our offense looks a thousand times better on paper now with Beltre back and Wilson for Cedeno. We might be able to make a run at this thing, though I would like for Wak to find a way to get Hannahan consistant playing time since he was just getting hot as Beltre came back.
