Beltre out, again, wince-inducing

DMZ · August 13, 2009 at 5:08 pm · Filed Under Mariners

According to Shannon Drayer (on Twitter! how are we supposed to cite Twitter inline?), Beltre’s got a torn testicle and in the next two days we’ll know if it requires surgery, which would sideline him for a month. I shuddered just typing that.

Also, we don’t know about Wilson’s hamstring yet, and Josh Wilson’s been activated. Baker says Jack’s injury is a “Grade 1 tear” but it sounds like they might keep him active. Not sure what the roster moves are going to end up being.

Damn, Beltre is one tough sucker. He played a number of innings after that injury.

Wow, that boggles the mind. The pain… the embarrassment… owch. Yet he stayed in the game, going 3 for 6 with the only run of the game. What a trooper, I have more respect for him each game.

I know he dislikes hitting in Safeco – How hard it is to get the ball out to left and left center. Hopefully this won’t add another item to the negative list.

He played through that – man has got some serious cojones.

My guess is that Beltre never plays another game without a cup. Hell, he might wear one when shopping for groceries. I sure as hell would.

Let’s be clear here. He not only has cojones, he had backup cojones to use when his starting cojones get wacked.

    Oh. My. God.

I may have to buy a Beltre jersey even if he’s done as a Mariner. What a guy.

Hannahan is going to get a chance to be the regular at third for most of the rest of the season, looks like. He’s done a nice job, once again kudos to Z for finding a useful spare part for cheap.

And we’ll have Wilson at Short, until Wilson is healthy.

    How confusing is that?

Regarding Josh Wilson, my first thought was where the M’s would go to get a pickup truck. Guess they had an old truck in Tacoma, so they didn’t have to go ask San Diego if they could borrow one.

Personally, I’d play Hannahan at SS and Wilson at 3B until Wilson comes back to play SS and shift Hannahan to 3B . . . the more innings Hannahan gets at SS, I think, the better for the future.

I gather “grade one” is the mildest (if you can call a tear mild) kind of muscle tear, hence the wait-and-see. With Beltre, the swelling goes down a bit, and he sees the specialist. The surgery has to be in 72 hours after the injury, per Drayer.

    *shrieks and falls over*

on the plus side, I imagine this means we don’t have to hear much more about DA’s butt.

(on Twitter! how are we supposed to cite Twitter inline?)

There’s supposed to be a way to link to individual twitter updates…I know I’m seen it but I can’t seem to figure it out.

You should be able to link to a tweet like
    this

    Man that had to hurt…

Now we know why he was wincing when he was having to dive and hustle back to first base late in the game.

As bad as the initial play was, diving on…that must’ve been brutal.

    My sign for Sunday’s game:

“Will donate a testicle to Adrian for some Rally Fries.”

What a shame. Now we can replace one all defense and no bat 3B guy with another all defense and no bat guy. Not good when a guy like Hannahan can take your spot and the team really doesn’t lose much.

Reading the ‘details’ of Beltre’s injury, I’m always reminded of Barry Bonds saying that he didn’t want to play first base because he didn’t want to wear a cup. So I thought all infielders wore them?

Hmmm…tough…or foolish? Perhaps he’ll be like the hitter who starts wearing all the armor after taking a few off the top of the foot or elbow. Is that a cup you’re wearing, or are you just happy to see Angie in the dugout?

  19. Jeff Nye on August 14th, 2009 3:05 am

Honestly, even the custom-fitted cups are pretty darn uncomfortable.

Better than the alternative? Probably, but I can see how you could decide otherwise if your job required you to wear one on a daily basis, especially if you figured your reflexes would be good enough to keep you safe.

Maybe this is a sign that his skillset is diminishing… wisdom comes with age though, right?

I wonder what that red bearded Beltre head guy is going to do now, maybe a big picture of a walnut on that stick?

  21. Kazinski on August 14th, 2009 9:47 am

Aren’t they still short an infielder? If Hanahan, Jo. Wilson or Lopez has to come out of a game then they’d have to shift Branyan to 3rd, and put Sweeney in at 1st. With Jack not on the DL and unavailble, I think they should DFA Sweeney, or have his back act up til Sept 1, and bring up Tui.

Play Tui at 3rd, put Hanahan back at SS, Jo. Wilson on the bench and leave it that way til Jack is back for about a week.

  22. Soonerman22 on August 14th, 2009 9:51 am

And THAT boys and…boys is why you wear a cup!!!

Yes I know it is not comfortable, but do you remember Josias Manzanillo? Mariners pitcher who took a line drive from Manny Ramirez in the groin and I believe had both tacticals removed because of it.

Wear a cup, you will be glad you did!!!

  23. DMZ on August 14th, 2009 11:31 am

    Both? I don’t think that’s correct.

  24. wibnrml on August 14th, 2009 12:08 pm

If fellow teammates were so intent on getting a cell phone picture of closer Aardsma’s boil that was located on his butt.
I wonder if those same teammates would attempt to digitize Beltre’s injured jewel.

Mentink said last night, that Griffey said he wanted to be in the room if Beltre had to have surgery so he could watch.

Raise your had if you want to watch doctors do surgery on your friends scrotum?

I really like Griffey, but tickling Ichiro? Watching you teammate have surgery on his tactical? Taking pictures of Aardsma’s boil?

I like the winning but some of the clubhouse stuff is bazaar.

  26. mln on August 15th, 2009 4:44 am

Why Beltre doesn’t wear a cup is beyond me.

I know they can be uncomfortable, but there has got to be some type of cup he can wear.
