Mark “Why Aren’t They Fooled By My Straight-As-A-Laser Fastball” Lowe was a bit of a disappointmet I’m afraid. And he gave Felix pouty-face, which really irked me.
Yeah, that was a bummer.
Lopez almost further cemented his clutchiness, though.
It’s true. Lopez seems to have realized that he’s gone after this year. An heroic AB regardless. What was it, 14 pitches?
Mark Lowe Evening was about as enjoyable as an evening at TGIFridays.
That final Rodney pitch to Lopez was just plain evil…what was that, a 95 mph sinking fastball?
The Mark Lowe experience was just plain painful. Good on you that you missed it.
But you also missed a great clutch steal by Ichiro in the 9th. Trailing 3 to 5, runner on 1st, first Ichiro gets a hit and it’s runners on 1st and 3rd, 1 out. Then Ichiro stole second to set up a “just need a measly hit to tie the game” for the next two batters.
But Branyan whiffed and then Lopez (“Carlos Lopez” today) had a reeeaaaally long at bat but also finally struck out.
The Mark Lowe Experience may not be all that, but remember, the Mariners also have the Brandon Morrow Ride waiting in the wings!
Is it the Brandon Morrow Ride that takes you from the Experience Mark Lowe Project to the Westlake Center?
And yeah, listening to the game it took me a long time to figure out who Carlos Lopez was… I think Dave’s brain got hung up on Jose Guillen, Carlos Guillen and Jose Lopez. He just made random combinations of those.
and, boy, can I relate to that.
Seemed like the Tigers had fun, at least.
If Mark Lowe developed another pitch, he’d make a fine close for some other team. No doubt he’s a competitor and he’s got closer velocity. If he got a chance to rack up some saves, he’d be a nice trading chip to put up.
I was listening to the game on XM, and the Detroit broadcasters pointed out after the fact that Lowe is “one of the premier relievers in the Mariners bullpen”, and I had to wonder whether they:
a) were deliberately damning with faint praise, or
b) meant Lowe was a premier reliever and is in the Mariners bullpen, or
c) meant the Mariners have several premier relievers in the pen, and Lowe is one of them, or
d) were flapping their jaws and were as surprised as the rest of us by the noises that came out.
He’ll have to get some movement on that fastball before he’ll be racking up any serious save numbers. Then maybe he can work on another pitch or two.
Here’s a fun fact: Josh Wilson is the only Mariner that has homered in the last week. Yipee!
Yeah…but unfortunately, he still became the goat thanks to that rather untimely error in the eighth.

I wonder why Rick Rzzzz doesn’t take Dave aside at the breaks and help him out. But then, you don’t tug on Superman’s cape….
And I wonder why Dave doesn’t just squash Ricky Rizzsbang like an insect every time he mentions the “happy totals”.
…And you don’t mess around with Jim! 😉
Ever notice how Rizzs never mentions the “sad totals” on nights when the M’s get their butts kicked?
Today is August 19th. So a week ago would be August 12th. I’m pretty sure Kenji jacked a HR on the 16th (Sunday). So, your fun fact is neither fun nor a fact.
Kenji’s HR on Sunday afternoon against the Yanks was a pretty good poke, too.
The most reassuring thing about Joh’s homerun on Sunday was that it wasn’t one of those middle-in pitches that he just yanks down the line with a whole lot of bat speed generated from pulling his hands in. It was actually over the plate, and he got around on it. Yes, it was pull power, but it was a very smooth swing off the fat part of the bat with extended arms.
If Kenji could somehow get back to what he was doing offensively in ’06-’07 next season, that would be nice.
“Happy Totals” is a phrase used by long time Cubs announcer, and HOFer Jack Brickhouse. As is “Any old kind of a run will win it” which he also uses occasionally. It’s who he watched as a kid growing up in Chicago.
