Game 123, Mariners at Indians

DMZ · August 22, 2009 at 3:10 pm · Filed Under Mariners

The M’s bullpen is supposed to be rundown, “achy” with Jakubauskas unavailable. And yeah, if you’re a fan of winning, this might get tough, since in terms of guys who haven’t pitched in 2/3 it’s Lowe, Batista, and Kelley.

And it is Fister. The Indians aren’t quite the offensive juggernaut the 2009 Yankees are though, so if Fister’s orders are to go six or seven at any cost, maybe it won’t work out as badly as it did for Snell.

Well, add Messenger to the bullpen– they’ve optioned Jak down to give him rest, and give them another arm.

  2. Breadbaker on August 22nd, 2009 3:43 pm

Will Messenger be there in time? I don’t think there are direct nonstops between Fresno and Cleveland.

  3. juneau_fan on August 22nd, 2009 3:56 pm

I thought Baker said that Messenger was there.

Let’s see, which game will be a bigger massacre, the Mariner’s or Saudi Arabia/Japan game in the Little League WS?

I had a misty moment when one of the Japanese player said his favorite player was Johjima. Someone still loves him.

  4. juneau_fan on August 22nd, 2009 3:58 pm

And just to give the Mariners hope today, Saudi Arabia ties it!

  5. DMZ on August 22nd, 2009 4:00 pm

    Mariners. Or Mariners’. Please.

Didn’t the pre-game show address this particularly relevant question? Or did Bill Krueger manage to do another cryptic Keys to the Game?
    > Automatic Backup
    > Home Away From Home
    > One Stop Shopping

    or something?

  6. Liam on August 22nd, 2009 4:01 pm

    A good rat trap.

  7. galaxieboi on August 22nd, 2009 4:04 pm

I miss watching M’s games, but I don’t miss Herr Kreuger.

  8. juneau_fan on August 22nd, 2009 4:05 pm

Sorry, I’m fully aware it shouldn’t be there. I am part of the World apostrophe police, so I hate when I make errors with their use. However, brain farts are hard to correct with no edit function.

    Anyway. Go, Mariners!

  9. Jeff Nye on August 22nd, 2009 4:07 pm

So yeah, incoherent as always. Thanks, Bill!

  10. Paul B on August 22nd, 2009 4:10 pm

If Krueger suddenly started to make sense, just imagine where we would all be. Bizarro world, that’s where.

  11. juneau_fan on August 22nd, 2009 4:14 pm

Speaking of bizarro world, it’s so weird to hear obsessing about RBIs, like Dave and Blowers were just doing for Lopez. The funny part was were they openly admitted he would need other players to get on base ahead of him. Uh, so what’s his part in padding that stat?

  12. Liam on August 22nd, 2009 4:19 pm

The Grand Branyan sure is majestic.

  13. MsofEnchantment on August 22nd, 2009 4:20 pm

    Boom! Branyan is coming back

  14. Lauren, token chick on August 22nd, 2009 4:20 pm

I think we all Laffeyed just now when Branyan lock-and-loaded that homerun into the rat trap. Yay!

  15. Jake N. on August 22nd, 2009 4:21 pm

    That was a crushed!

  16. Paul B on August 22nd, 2009 4:21 pm

awww, Sweeney gave Branyan a big hug in the dugout.

  17. galaxieboi on August 22nd, 2009 4:22 pm

    Were there tickles?

  18. DMZ on August 22nd, 2009 4:23 pm

Branyan’s 2009 HR total is now equal to the total HR production the M’s got from first base all last season.

  19. MsofEnchantment on August 22nd, 2009 4:24 pm

First pitch from Fister is a very questionable ball…I hope that’s not a trend tonight.

  20. Paul B on August 22nd, 2009 4:25 pm

    Were there tickles?

I didn’t see Griffey in the dugout.

  21. Liam on August 22nd, 2009 4:29 pm

Branyan’s 2009 HR total is now equal to the total HR production the M’s got from first base all last season.

Back on June 7th, you said that Branyan was only 2 home runs away from the 2008 total. Since then he has hit 17 home runs.

Branyan is now 2HR from tying the M’s 2008 total for all first baseman (Sexson+Vidro+Lopez+Lahair…)

  22. galaxieboi on August 22nd, 2009 4:30 pm

Are we counting those players while playing at first base, or there season totals?

  23. DMZ on August 22nd, 2009 4:32 pm

    You’re right, it’s 2x now

  24. DMZ on August 22nd, 2009 4:34 pm

    their

M’s hit 15 HRs while playing 1B in 2008. Also 15 HR at 1B. And 14 at catcher and 2B.

  25. galaxieboi on August 22nd, 2009 4:37 pm

Jeez, sorry about that. I’m playing liar’s dice and drinking Lone Star with my in-laws.

  26. juneau_fan on August 22nd, 2009 4:41 pm

Boy, Derek, you’ve really got your grammar panties on today.

I know that I read my posts over a couple of times before posting, but like any publishing, it’s amazing how the errors don’t become obvious until the submit/send/print button is hit. I’m sure others have the same issue.

It’s sort of pointless to have a game thread, with the flow of a conversation following a continual action on our TVs if we all need to spend 15 minutes proofreading every post.

And yes, I’m thrilled that is seems to be one of the few places for intelligent baseball discussion where standards are demanded. I completely appreciate that, but, eh….anyway.

    Go, Mariners!

  27. DMZ on August 22nd, 2009 4:43 pm

Ha ha ha grammar panties. Because casual misogyny is hilarious.

  28. galaxieboi on August 22nd, 2009 4:49 pm

3 ground outs for Fister so far.

  29. Lauren, token chick on August 22nd, 2009 4:49 pm

Hmmm. I am not sure I agree with either the hardcore grammar approach or the misogyny accusations, which is odd because I am big on grammar and not big on misogyny. But I suppose this isn’t my blog. Good lord what is that man wearing.

  30. Lauren, token chick on August 22nd, 2009 4:51 pm

Oh yeah–it’s not really grammar, more spelling, I’d say. Punctuation, too, but I consider that part of spelling usually.

  31. galaxieboi on August 22nd, 2009 4:55 pm

Oh, I epic failed on the their/there business. I accept full responsibility for my actions.

  32. Paul B on August 22nd, 2009 5:15 pm

If I had never seen Josh Wilson play before this week, and had never looked at his career stats, I would think he was some amazing prospect that the M’s had called up.

What a week he is having.

  33. juneau_fan on August 22nd, 2009 5:15 pm

Misogyny? Is that the right context? I was thinking of the parallel to the garment itself, constricting and unsexy for the wearer, as becoming over-obsessive about small details can be, regardless of gender. But I assume that you think I mean it as a slam on your masculinity. Not the case. I find this blog a refreshingly gender neutral place most of the time.

In any case, as fun as this is, I feel my pissiness has reached an unproductive level, and unlike galaxie, I will not apologize for accidentally misusing an apostrophe, but I will apologize for allowing said pissiness to flow out, and take the best course, which is to catch the rest of the game later when it’s repeated, and go fishin’. Time to be puttin’ stores up for the winter anyway.

  34. joser on August 22nd, 2009 5:18 pm

And this game thread proves beyond all doubt there are dog days of summer, and this is them.

Is this game even on the radio?

  35. msb on August 22nd, 2009 5:19 pm

Feh, Hafner. Messenger is there– Drayer had a nice ‘how ya doing’ interview, pregame.

  36. Paul B on August 22nd, 2009 5:19 pm

8 ground balls versus 2 fly balls given up by Fister so far today.

  37. Lauren, token chick on August 22nd, 2009 5:20 pm

juneau, I think you’ve been fine, myself. But have fun fishing.

  38. joser on August 22nd, 2009 5:21 pm

In that case, what would grammar thongs be?

(And if granny panties are the roomy, comfortable, unsexy-but-sensible kind, then would grammar gannies be… what?)

To be perfectly honest, I think Derek and the mods around here sport grammar marble sacks.

  39. Paul B on August 22nd, 2009 5:23 pm

Course, right after I typed that about the ground balls, Hafner hits a homer.

  40. Scottdids on August 22nd, 2009 5:26 pm

The M’s need some more runs soon. Fister is what he is, which is mediocre. They’ve squandered a few too many chances already.

  41. msb on August 22nd, 2009 5:26 pm

This doesn’t feel quite as comfy a game as it did in the first.

  42. SunDevil1 on August 22nd, 2009 5:29 pm

Anyone besides me think that Hall showed some good speed on that bare-handed attempt earlier in the game?

    Correct grammar is a relief.

  43. Liam on August 22nd, 2009 5:29 pm

The fan that grabbed it quickly threw it up to another fan, presumably so they won’t be thrown out.

  44. SunDevil1 on August 22nd, 2009 5:30 pm

…oh and joser – the game is on 770, since the Seahawks are using the ESPN 710 airspace.

  45. Scottdids on August 22nd, 2009 5:43 pm

Kenji having a bit of tough luck tonight.. He’s stung a couple balls.

  46. Paul B on August 22nd, 2009 5:45 pm

Yes, hitting it hard but right at people.

  47. Scottdids on August 22nd, 2009 5:47 pm

How did Nick Hill have his 3rd straight complete game at West Tennessee if he only went 6 innings?

  48. Paul B on August 22nd, 2009 5:47 pm

Watching Josh Wilson playing like an all-star, I’m reminded of Jack Z’s comments about how he needs to use both scouting and statistics together.

  49. Tv Producer on August 22nd, 2009 5:49 pm

Scottdids, He started for the road team in a 7 inning game of a doubleheader, and the home team was ahead 1-0 after the top 7th. One of the other CG’s was also a 7 inning affair.

  50. msb on August 22nd, 2009 5:50 pm

Apparently if you vaguely flap the glove at a baserunner, and then wave it in the air with authority, Tom Hallion will take your word for it that you got the runner.

  51. Scottdids on August 22nd, 2009 5:54 pm

Thanks TVProducer! So does Fister go one more inning?

  52. msb on August 22nd, 2009 5:55 pm

Say! Did you know that “In Game 3 of the 2008 World Series, Hallion made a call that ruled Carl Crawford safe, when he was clearly out. The call extended the inning and eventually cost the Philadelphia Phillies 2 Runs?”

  53. Liam on August 22nd, 2009 6:11 pm

I think Gutierrez should wear the catcher’s gear while roaming the outfield.

  54. nvn8vbryce on August 22nd, 2009 6:15 pm

Liam: was the on field delay a result of an injury to Guti? I don’t have access to the radio broadcast right now…

  55. Liam on August 22nd, 2009 6:19 pm

One of the Cleveland players was hit by a pitch. I was referring to the fly ball that Gutierrez caught, but had a close encounter of the Saunders kind.

  56. Liam on August 22nd, 2009 6:22 pm

What is it with ball players and their need to pat each other on the butt?

  57. msb on August 22nd, 2009 6:27 pm

Gosh, I hope we get some offense for Christmas.

  58. jefffrane on August 22nd, 2009 6:28 pm

What is it with ball players and their need to pat each other on the butt?

Or the constant need to pat their own crotch, especially relief pitchers. “Uh, yup. Still down there.”

  59. Scottdids on August 22nd, 2009 6:29 pm

A little late for this, but Saunders has looked a bit out of sorts tonight, hasn’t he?

  60. msb on August 22nd, 2009 6:38 pm

    And yet again!

  61. jefffrane on August 22nd, 2009 6:42 pm

Kerry Wood is a tragic figure. It wasn’t that long ago that he was a true joy to watch, but these days it’s amazing to me he still has a job.

  62. Liam on August 22nd, 2009 6:59 pm

Langerhan’s sac bunt dropped our chances of winning by 0.8%

  63. Liam on August 22nd, 2009 7:00 pm

Scratch that, the numbers got mixed up. Increased by 0.2%

  64. Anthony on August 22nd, 2009 7:03 pm

I really like the Cleveland tv announcers. But this whole runner on third, less than two outs and not scoring thing.

  65. msb on August 22nd, 2009 7:07 pm

I believe “Aargh” is an appropriate response to this game, thus far.

  66. Scottdids on August 22nd, 2009 7:21 pm

So are we down to just Batista and Messenger in the pen now?

  67. djw on August 22nd, 2009 7:24 pm

    Is AArdsma not available?

  68. Tv Producer on August 22nd, 2009 7:24 pm

White and Aardsma also in the pen.

  69. Scottdids on August 22nd, 2009 7:26 pm

Not sure djw, I’m going by the info in the top of the thread.. Not sure if that means the other guys are actually unavailable though.. thinking if this game goes long, you might have to use one or more of them out of necessity.

  70. flashbeak on August 22nd, 2009 7:26 pm

3-0 popout? Really, Ichi? You may be my hero, but sometimes you do some really inexpicably stupid things.

  71. Scottdids on August 22nd, 2009 7:28 pm

    Messenger’s cap looks sparkling new.

  72. msb on August 22nd, 2009 7:30 pm

    Ah, me.

  73. flashbeak on August 22nd, 2009 7:33 pm

Good thing our offense is unbelievably clutch!

  74. Scottdids on August 22nd, 2009 7:54 pm

Well that one hurt, the M’s outplayed the Tribe but couldn’t cash in any runners and let Cleveland hang around, and when you keep doing that eventually you’re gonna lose it. Cleveland you earned that one. Have a good night everyone.

  75. Nate on August 22nd, 2009 9:08 pm

I feel like we gave it away more than Cleveland earned that one.

What’s that? 3 losses in the bottom of the last inning in the past 5 games? C’mon guys! We won the other two. Let’s have a hold for the final 3 outs! We should be sitting on a 6 game win streak.

    sigh.

  76. kenshabby on August 22nd, 2009 9:23 pm

I think we got the Messenger loud ‘n’ clear: Randy’s still a pretty dreadful pitcher. How’s this for a career line (excluding tonight):

    174 1/3 IP, 212 H, 115 SO, 80 BB, K/BB 1.44, tRA 4.71.

    Blech.

  77. Scottdids on August 22nd, 2009 9:42 pm

Nate, I said ‘earned’ because Cleveland was able to take advantage of their opportunities. I don’t remember them stranding RISP after getting them there with no outs. Seattle didn’t take advantage at all, and deserved to lose tonight, even though they outplayed Cleveland overall.

  78. flashbeak on August 23rd, 2009 8:45 am

But Scottdids, this isn’t anything new, is it?
