    Career lines vs. Anderson

Player AB H HR BB SO AVG
    Suzuki 3 3 0 0 0 1.000

    I miss Ichiro!

  2. joser on August 25th, 2009 6:39 pm

The Sweeney handedness still cracks me up.

  3. flashbeak on August 25th, 2009 7:04 pm

I kind of/sort of almost like Josh Wilson better than Jack Wilson. Well, at least I like the fluke Josh Wilson better.

  4. Liam on August 25th, 2009 7:11 pm

Does our opinion on Wakamatsu change if he’s still playing Wak ball next season? (Unoptimized lineups, doesn’t pinch hit, bunts too often)

  5. Liam on August 25th, 2009 7:17 pm

I liked when Bill Krueger said that the Mariners DH since Edgar had been “sleepy.” (I think someone is still a bit drowsy)

  6. Jeff Nye on August 25th, 2009 7:27 pm

    Hair gel fumes are soporific.

  7. juneau_fan on August 25th, 2009 7:30 pm

Saunders is just fun to watch. He looks like he should be so galloping giraffe like Sexson and then he’s so not.

  8. joser on August 25th, 2009 7:33 pm

Endy who? Seriously, remember the sinking feeling you used to have when balls were headed for left field? I miss Raul at the plate (when he’s not hiding an injury) but I don’t miss him in the field. And I don’t miss Wlad either. If Saunders gets his feet under him when it comes to hitting big league pitching, I’ll be quite happy with him holding down LF until Ackley shows up.

  9. scott19 on August 25th, 2009 7:38 pm

    R-R-R-RUSSELL!

  10. Liam on August 25th, 2009 7:40 pm

Seriously, remember the sinking feeling you used to have when balls were headed for left field?

What hurts more, when Raul makes a good play or when Guti makes a bad play?

  11. Dirk on August 25th, 2009 7:43 pm

    According to ESPN.com:

Seattle Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu said before Tuesday night’s game against Oakland that his nine-time All-Star will not return Wednesday from a sore calf as the team had hoped.

Suzuki did some light work Tuesday and Wakamatsu says his star is improving. Yet Suzuki missed his second consecutive game and likely remains out until late this week.

  12. DMZ on August 25th, 2009 7:43 pm

Gutierrez, because Ibanez is a Phil and I don’t like Philly

  13. scott19 on August 25th, 2009 7:44 pm

For as painful as it was to watch Raul at times out in left, he does have one of the smoothest swings of anybody currently in the game.

  14. SpokaneDan on August 25th, 2009 7:47 pm

My goodness Saunders is a good bunter.

  15. joser on August 25th, 2009 7:48 pm

What hurts more, when Raul makes a good play or when Guti makes a bad play?

Raul’s plays don’t hurt at all because (a) I don’t see them and (b) I know the difficulty factor in LF at Citizen’s Bank park is far lower than Safeco, so whatever good plays be might make wouldn’t be as good here.

Whereas at least a couple of Gutierrez’ bad plays were cases where he outran the ball and surprised himself. If that’s the obverse of his defensive coin, I’ll cash it every time.

  16. Joe on August 25th, 2009 7:49 pm

You know, I was kind of dimissive of Russel in another thread today. Whatever happens this offseason, I sure love having him on the team when he does that.

  17. SpokaneDan on August 25th, 2009 7:50 pm

He could use more polish on the basepaths however.

  18. joser on August 25th, 2009 7:55 pm

RRS is following the Washburn model for success: don’t walk anybody, induce flyballs, let the outfield chase them down, and hope the park holds them. It’s that last part that can bite you in the ass.

  19. Joe on August 25th, 2009 7:58 pm

Man, the Rangers are one swing of the bat from choking away a 10-6 win in NY.

  20. juneau_fan on August 25th, 2009 8:06 pm

So Mariners-eque, a four pitch inning for the A’s pitcher. True, there were some extenuating circumstances, but boy….

  21. scott19 on August 25th, 2009 8:07 pm

If I were the Rangers, I would enjoy beating up on the Yanks in this series — since they’re highly unlikely to do so against them come October.

  22. Lauren, token chick on August 25th, 2009 8:20 pm

A custom-made cup. Thank god. That’s what I’ve been thinking all along… come on. He makes millions of dollars a year for a multimillion (billion?) dollar industry. They can’t get a more comfortable cup made for the guy?

  23. Lauren, token chick on August 25th, 2009 8:21 pm

Also: “I require a *custom-made* cup” is a great line for the minor leaguers to use on the ladies. Take note, young fellows.

  24. juneau_fan on August 25th, 2009 8:39 pm

I dunno, Lauren, that could go an ugly direction too, if the young lady in question had an imagination. Better to stick with “I need XXL condoms.”

    Ugh, Lopez.

It would be so weird to come home with a bat from a game.

  25. juneau_fan on August 25th, 2009 8:48 pm

Yeah, the A’s third base coach realizes it’s not Johnson at home plate, but a man who’ll actually take a hit and block the plate. With skinny little Ellis running, I can’t see him doing a Pete Rose.

  26. flashbeak on August 25th, 2009 9:16 pm

Why did we get Jack Wilson again? Man, I knew he can’t hit, but I didn’t know he really really just can’t hit.

  27. Lauren, token chick on August 25th, 2009 9:22 pm

He looks like he should be able to hear well, though.

  28. flashbeak on August 25th, 2009 9:28 pm

Michael Wuertz just threw 7 consecutive sliders to Guti. Hey, I would feel pretty comfortable throwing a pitch that has registered the highest swinging strike rate in all of baseball too. But come on, 7?

  29. flashbeak on August 25th, 2009 9:32 pm

    Redeem yourself, Carlos Lopez.

  30. Liam on August 25th, 2009 9:33 pm

Why did we get Jack Wilson again?

    Yuniesky Betancourt -1.9 WAR
    Jack Wilson 1.9 WAR

  31. Joe on August 25th, 2009 9:36 pm

So Griffey pinch hit for Hannahan. Does Hall now move to 3rd and Langerhans goes into RF?

  32. juneau_fan on August 25th, 2009 9:38 pm

Wow, the battle of the ineffective offenses.

  33. Liam on August 25th, 2009 9:47 pm

It’s really hard to tell the difference between safe and out on Lopez’ steal and Branyan’s toss to Aardsma, even after multiple replays on various angles.

  34. littlesongs on August 25th, 2009 9:48 pm

The man with three A’s on his back sent three A’s down in order.

C’mon gentlemen, we need one of those roaring crowd and pig pile moments.

  35. joser on August 25th, 2009 9:48 pm

Also: “I require a *custom-made* cup” is a great line for the minor leaguers to use on the ladies. Take note, young fellows.

Well, technically, in primates teste size correlates to female promiscuity. In species where the male can be fairly certain about the paternity of his offspring, such as gorillas (where an alpha male leads a troop of females and immature males), the testes size is small. In species where the females freely mate with a variety of males, like Bonobos and, to a somewhat lesser extent, chimps and humans, the teste size is relatively large — a natural result of female choice and sperm competition.

So boasting to the ladies about your custom-made cup is, at least indirectly, calling them sluts.

(When it come so penis size, of course, humans are way out of proportion to their body size compared to every other primate. Which presumably, like peacock tails and deer antlers, is all about female choice influencing evolution too. So I guess the whole “custom cup” thing has that going for it.)

  36. joser on August 25th, 2009 9:49 pm

Sorry, just came back from the bar and had some kind of “Wild Kingdom” moment for a second there.

  37. Jeff Nye on August 25th, 2009 9:50 pm

    The More You Know!

  38. juneau_fan on August 25th, 2009 9:53 pm

Sadly, more oomph in joser’s post than in Branyan’s hit.

  39. Lauren, token chick on August 25th, 2009 9:58 pm

    Hee.

  40. flashbeak on August 25th, 2009 10:01 pm

I’m feeling a repeat of the August 7 game here for Langerhans.

  41. Joe on August 25th, 2009 10:06 pm

Gutierrez is being more Ichiro than Ichiro. Would be awesome if he can keep this up when Ichi gets back.

  42. Lauren, token chick on August 25th, 2009 10:09 pm

    OK, flashbeak. Your win.

  43. juneau_fan on August 25th, 2009 10:09 pm

    flashbeak, indeed! Spooooky….

  44. littlesongs on August 25th, 2009 10:10 pm

Langerhans = Death to extra innings!

  45. joser on August 25th, 2009 10:11 pm

I kind of like this Langerhans dude. Great sense of timing. Ichiro had his first walk-off hit ever this year; Langerhans now has two.

  46. juneau_fan on August 25th, 2009 10:11 pm

Perversely, because I can’t stand all that pounding at homeplate for some reason, I thought that was a bit underplayed by the Mariners. (Of course, Sweeney still gives the Big Hug)

Just ‘Oh, Ryan does it again. Good. Let’s go home.’

  47. Liam on August 25th, 2009 10:13 pm

Now all we need is for Sweeney to pie Langerhans during the post game interview.

  48. TWownsU on August 25th, 2009 10:13 pm

    LANGERHANS

  49. Jim_H on August 25th, 2009 10:13 pm

I’m feeling a repeat of the August 7 game here for Langerhans.

    Nice job!

Interesting that L’hans is pinch hitting for Griffey here…

I wonder if Wak will be a little more willing to pinch hit in key situations after this?

  50. flashbeak on August 25th, 2009 10:14 pm

Hmmm. I’m feeling just a bit psychic right now.

  51. henryv on August 25th, 2009 10:21 pm

My favorite parts of that game were:

    1) The fat kid in the red hat behind Russel Branyan in the stands giving the “O” face after the swing.

    2) The Asian lady catching the Langerhans home run ball off the bounce after the three frat boys miss it, and right before the A’s fan can get it.

  52. joser on August 25th, 2009 10:35 pm

The A’s are now 3 for 12 in extra innings games. That’s the measure of a bad bullpen.

Interesting that L’hans is pinch hitting for Griffey here…

Well, no. Griffey pinch hit for Hannahan. Since Griffey can’t play 3rd, Hall moved there, and Langerhans went out into RF for Hall. So Langerhans was pinch-fielding for Griffey, if anything. It just so happened that spot came up in the order again.

  53. Liam on August 25th, 2009 10:53 pm

The A’s are now 3 for 12 in extra innings games. That’s the measure of a bad bullpen.

According to pRAA, the A’s actually have the best bullpen in baseball, while the Mariners have the second worst bullpen. That’s results based analysis for you.

  54. msb on August 25th, 2009 10:57 pm

Gosh, I missed a fine game thread as well as the game!

  55. Nate on August 25th, 2009 11:11 pm

    I require a *custom-made* cup

Well, technically, in primates teste size correlates to female promiscuity. ok, next time I’m faced with the opportunity, I’m gonna try each of these lines. I’ll let you know how it goes…

(you may have outdone yourself on that one joser)

  56. juneau_fan on August 25th, 2009 11:20 pm

We need a USS Mariner Post Hall of Fame, so that joser post can go right up there next to the gay porn thread.

  57. mln on August 25th, 2009 11:35 pm

    Bonobos. Heh.
