Updates from today’s Wall Street Journal

    M’s have a 23 % chance of winning today.

Niehaus’ play-by-play clocks in at 84 words per minute, well behind the leader Vin Scully at 144 wpm. They really do have statistics for everything!

  2. The Ancient Mariner on September 3rd, 2009 6:28 pm

It has to be a little annoying for Mike Carp, too.

  3. JerBear on September 3rd, 2009 6:35 pm

According to Baker, Lopez is at 2B and Carp is in at 1st… I don’t know who’s information is more recent though.

  4. JerBear on September 3rd, 2009 6:38 pm

Too small of a sample size to mean anything though. ;)

  5. Liam on September 3rd, 2009 6:41 pm

“we listened to the first scoreless inning of every team’s home broadcast last Friday”

It’s such a small sample size it’s not even worth mentioning and yet someone at the WSJ thought it made for a good article.

  6. msb on September 3rd, 2009 6:44 pm

Brad Lefton will be on the pregame shortly, talking Ichiro & milestones

  7. scott19 on September 3rd, 2009 6:52 pm

On the radio pre-game show, Niehaus asked Wak if there was anyplace on the field where Bill Hall couldn’t play…to which Wak jokingly replied, “Well, we were thinking maybe he could be the third catcher.”

Actually, I like Wak’s line of thinking…since Hall might actually be better behind the plate defensively than Rob Johnson.

You should check tomorrow’s WSJ piece. I’ve heard some smart guy might have an interesting piece in there.

“Seattle Mariner and baseball analysis from some smart guy and Derek Zumsteg”

  10. msb on September 3rd, 2009 7:11 pm

I like it when smart guys write.

Oh, look! A hit by Ichiro!

  11. juneau_fan on September 3rd, 2009 7:13 pm

I hope this is the beginning of something. Tired of waiting 8 inning to get two runs and praying that the pitching holds it up.

  12. Liam on September 3rd, 2009 7:14 pm

Dave, is there a link to where I can see all your WSJ pieces?

  13. scott19 on September 3rd, 2009 7:14 pm

Nice start to the game, Guti!

  14. juneau_fan on September 3rd, 2009 7:17 pm

    Sweet, sweet, sweet.

I love the A’s this year.

  15. msb on September 3rd, 2009 7:17 pm

    Yay, Bill Hall!

  16. scott19 on September 3rd, 2009 7:19 pm

He definitely “Halled” that one out!

  17. Dave on September 3rd, 2009 7:20 pm

Dave, is there a link to where I can see all your WSJ pieces?

Yeah, but you have to be a subscriber to see it. I don’t even have access to my own archives.

  18. naviomelo on September 3rd, 2009 7:28 pm

Nice interview with Jack Cust over at BP.

  19. msb on September 3rd, 2009 7:32 pm

I was so happy just a half inning ago.

  20. scott19 on September 3rd, 2009 7:33 pm

Apparently, the A’s ownership has been meeting with city officials in San Jose about moving the team down there.

This, of course, would mean the absolute colossal cataclysmic end to the San Francisco Giants as a franchise if the A’s were to move to a city which is actually further out from downtown SF than Oakland is…

    Oh, the humanity!

  21. juneau_fan on September 3rd, 2009 7:49 pm

    Well, damn, Ichiro.

I can sooooorta see it, Scott, from having lived in the Bay Area. The flight patterns for SF were to move down to the Peninsula from SF, or to work in SF while living down there, but no one fled to Hayward from SF.

So theoretically, there’s these Giants fans laying around their houses in Sunnyvale that would rather drive to SJ to watch a game then go all the way up to SF. *shrug*

And at one point, the Giants ownership threatened to go to SJ themselves.

I feel bad for the Oakland fans, because it would be a royal pain in the ass to get from the East Bay to SJ for games. Like, forget it. So yeah, they’d have to steal the Giants fans to have any one coming at all.

My dream was always for Oakland to build their own field on the water, right across the bay from Pac Bell, and the fans could scream abuse at each other, and during the interleague series, they could play one game of a double header on each side.

Plus games for Oakland would be much more pleasant, as the waterfront area’s pretty nice, close to downtown to take in a game after work, not out by the freeway and nothing else like where they are now.

  22. Breadbaker on September 3rd, 2009 7:49 pm

There was a time when the Giants, when trying to replace Candlestick, wanted to move to San Jose, which is how it became part of the Giants’ territory. But given that the Giants have about as much of a chance of moving from their current location as the Yankees do of moving from theirs, I would think it would be pretty petty for them to try to enforce this.

  23. juneau_fan on September 3rd, 2009 7:53 pm

    Come on, Snell.

  24. Breadbaker on September 3rd, 2009 7:53 pm

What was on Jack Wilson’s mind there?

  25. Liam on September 3rd, 2009 7:54 pm

Jack Wilson, that was not a good throw.

  26. Jeff Nye on September 3rd, 2009 7:54 pm

Hahaha, what the heck was that?

  27. scott19 on September 3rd, 2009 7:55 pm

Damn, Jack-Wil, where were you lobbing that one to?

  28. JerBear on September 3rd, 2009 7:56 pm

    Seriously, that was little-league style.

  29. DMZ on September 3rd, 2009 8:01 pm

I don’t think that’s how the Giants got their claim.

Magowan essentially said “it’s ours” because he wanted to extort concessions from the A’s, and Selig backed them. I’d have to go hit the books to cite the references though.

The whole territorial system is broken anyway.

  30. hidalgo on September 3rd, 2009 8:01 pm

You should check tomorrow’s WSJ piece. I’ve heard some smart guy might have an interesting piece in there.

WSJ sports is the second section I check after I see how pork belly futures are doing!

  31. juneau_fan on September 3rd, 2009 8:04 pm

I’ll miss that funny flip thing that Beltre does when he spins away from hitting a foul.

  32. scott19 on September 3rd, 2009 8:10 pm

And at one point, the Giants ownership threatened to go to SJ themselves.

Yeah, I remember that too, Juneau (and you too, Breadbaker, since you mentioned it as well).

It might’ve been nicer to move the team downtown to the Oakland waterfront…and it would’ve been kind of ironic also, given that the two parks would be facing each other across the Bay much like the Coliseum and Candlestick do. As bitter as the old “Subway Series” rivalries between the Yanks and Brooklyn were back in the 50′s, you still couldn’t actually see Yankee Stadium from Ebbets Field and vice-versa — unlike those two parks from the “Bay Bridge Series”.

  33. Liam on September 3rd, 2009 8:14 pm

Would they really be the Oakland Athletics of San Jose ala the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim?

Then in 30 years when they move again, they’ll be the Oakland Athletics of San Jose at Fremont?

  34. msb on September 3rd, 2009 8:15 pm

    Magowan essentially said “it’s ours”

Much like a cat, in his mind everything belongs to Magowan.

  35. Liam on September 3rd, 2009 8:16 pm

Third home run by the Mariners, free Arby’s roast beef sandwich for everyone.

  36. hark on September 3rd, 2009 8:16 pm

Kenji! That was a good, towering home run. Not one of his line drives, and not yanked straight away.

  37. scott19 on September 3rd, 2009 8:16 pm

And now Kenji — with actually a timely piece of hitting for a change!

  38. Lauren, token chick on September 3rd, 2009 8:20 pm

I just had sangria and tapas… and now a Kenji home run? Embarrassment of riches indeed.

  39. Farmer Cam on September 3rd, 2009 8:22 pm

Tomko looks as good as I remember.

Seriously… I was shocked when I saw his name as the starter. I thought he was out of the league… has he been pitching for Oakland all year?

  40. Jeff Nye on September 3rd, 2009 8:23 pm

WSJ sports is the second section I check after I see how pork belly futures are doing!

    Mmmm, pork bellies.

  41. fiftyone on September 3rd, 2009 8:25 pm

    Full moon… prepare for a 12-9 derby.

  42. msb on September 3rd, 2009 8:27 pm

“The A’s signed Tomko, 36, to a Minor League contract on Aug. 5. “

  43. hark on September 3rd, 2009 8:28 pm

Would they really be the Oakland Athletics of San Jose ala the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim?

I realize this is mostly facetious, but the United States Angels of Anaheim near Los Angeles in California had a contract with the city to keep the name of Anaheim as part of their identity when the municipality agreed to financially back the renovation of Anaheim Stadium/Edison Field/Angels Stadium of Anaheim(their stadium is as ridiculous as its owner!). When they became the Los Angeles Angels, Anaheim sued for breach of contract and lost, but ownership threw the city a bone while flipping them the bird.

  44. juneau_fan on September 3rd, 2009 8:29 pm

has he been pitching for Oakland all year?

No, they said he’s been over in Sacramento most of the year. Has had three starts or three wins for the A’s; wasn’t paying that much attention.

Jeez, Snell, do you want to win or not?

Why is this game still a torment even with a lead against a weak team?

  45. hidalgo on September 3rd, 2009 8:30 pm

Be careful Belly. I hope you’ve written your last will and testicle.

  46. Breadbaker on September 3rd, 2009 8:34 pm

This story indicates that our impression was pretty much correct: the Giants were given the South Bay territory preparatory to trying to move there, though not expressly saying they would.

  47. hark on September 3rd, 2009 8:34 pm

Why is this game still a torment even with a lead against a weak team?

Because the Mariners are also a weak team? Better than the A’s, but in al seriousness…

  48. scott19 on September 3rd, 2009 8:35 pm

Oh, don’t worry, I’m sure the Angels — at some point within the next decade or so — will also find a way to somehow incorporate not only Orange County but also the cities of Santa Ana, Irvine, Newport Beach and San Juan Capistrano into their “official” title as well.

  49. Liam on September 3rd, 2009 8:43 pm

Did anyone catch the announcers talking about Brett Tomko being released by Yankees, he watched himself in the mirror, changed his delivery back to what he did in little league and credits his new found success to that? The media falls for this way too often.

  50. juneau_fan on September 3rd, 2009 8:43 pm

Great shot of Kenji, with Snell pressed to the bench in the dugout, giving it to him.

Can’t see Johnson doing that; he’s too busy getting hugging lessons from Sweeney.

  51. juneau_fan on September 3rd, 2009 8:45 pm

They’ve told the story twice in the game, Liam, so they seem to like it.

  52. Liam on September 3rd, 2009 8:45 pm

Why is this game still a torment even with a lead against a weak team?

Going by the series preview over at lookoutlanding, Oakland is the better overall team by far.

  53. hidalgo on September 3rd, 2009 8:46 pm

Seattle beating Oakland in two sports at once by a combined score of 20-10! Now which Josh Wilson is back to catch punts?

  54. scott19 on September 3rd, 2009 8:50 pm

Come to think of it, the ‘Hawks played the Chiefs last weekend while the M’s were playing the Royals…crazy!

  55. Liam on September 3rd, 2009 8:56 pm

Does Carp run slower than Branyan?

  56. argh on September 3rd, 2009 9:08 pm

What’s with the regular George of the Jungle whoops out of the stands tonight? A regular Bay area peculiarity or something special for the Mariners? If anyone knows.

  57. scott19 on September 3rd, 2009 9:10 pm

What’s with the regular George of the Jungle whoops out of the stands tonight?

The typical primal chants of cro-mag A’s fans, perhaps?

  58. juneau_fan on September 3rd, 2009 9:16 pm

I haven’t noticed, how sad is that?

There’s that guy with the big horn that sounds for of like an angry yak…is it that guy?

  59. msb on September 3rd, 2009 9:19 pm

It isn’t George of the jungle, it’s like that old disco noise– ahhoohh ahhhooohhh

  60. argh on September 3rd, 2009 9:21 pm

No idea, knowing less about angry yak noises even than George of the Jungle noises. It’s clearly one person or noise-maker and comes through quite clearly during the (relatively frequent) quiet moments in the game.

  61. scott19 on September 3rd, 2009 9:27 pm

Don’t know if it’s the same guys or not, but there used to be a couple of dudes down there who wore Blues Brothers sunglasses and would stand around blowing those stupid plastic horns the whole game like they were in a Ricola cough drop ad or something.

  62. juneau_fan on September 3rd, 2009 9:28 pm

It’s a like a six foot long horn, so it makes just one long note. Does George of the Jungle sound like Tarzan?

    (How exciting is this game?)

  63. Liam on September 3rd, 2009 9:44 pm

Hannahan is running for Carp, so I guess he did look slow on his double.

  64. Breadbaker on September 3rd, 2009 9:45 pm

September far from the madding pennant race. You have to love baseball to watch this. I love baseball.

  65. naviomelo on September 3rd, 2009 9:50 pm

It wasn’t long ago that someone was lamenting our inability to win 7-4 games.

  66. JerBear on September 3rd, 2009 9:51 pm

The squeeze!!! Well it surprised me!

  67. scott19 on September 3rd, 2009 9:52 pm

Wouldn’t you know it…the M’s finally get a season where they manage to beat up the A’s on a fairly regular basis — but then wind up finishing about 47 games behind the Angels, anyway.

  68. Liam on September 3rd, 2009 9:55 pm

Aardsma was going to throw a nice 5 pitch inning and then Lopez boots it.

  69. juneau_fan on September 3rd, 2009 9:55 pm

Flashing back to Hall’s fine play at second yesterday….

Oh, and right, they were going to tie their record of errorless games.

  70. scott19 on September 3rd, 2009 9:55 pm

Well, thanks again for your oh-so-stellar defense, J-Lo…

  71. scott19 on September 3rd, 2009 9:57 pm

Nice comeback for the K and the wrap there, Aardsma!

  72. Breadbaker on September 3rd, 2009 9:57 pm

The same Ian Snell who pitched the USS Mariner game at Safeco comes out today, and yet we still win. Amazin’.
