Game 136, Mariners at A’s

DMZ · September 4, 2009 at 6:18 pm · Filed Under Mariners

RRS v Mortensen.

Bill Hall in left! That guy’s crazy! Johjima behind the plate, too.

So ready? It’s time for that long-missing game, “Would you swap ‘em?”

Position by position, let’s go. Contracts (and contract status) count.
C Johjima v Suzuki
1B Carp v Crosby
2B Lopez v Ellis
SS Wilson v Pennington
3B Beltre v Kennedy
LF Hall v Hairston
CF Gutierrez v Davis
RF Ichiro! v Sweeney
DH Griffey v Garciaparra

Or, to put this another way, maybe the M’s aren’t in such a bad spot.

I’d be happy to have a second Suzuki. Aside from that, give me Ellis and I’m done.

  2. Liam on September 4th, 2009 6:37 pm

Baker says Griffey is out with soreness in his knee.

  3. rmac1973 on September 4th, 2009 6:39 pm

I wouldn’t mind Ryan Sweeney, but certainly not at the expense of Itchy.

  4. Liam on September 4th, 2009 6:49 pm

According to Brad Adam only the Orioles and Nationals are out of the playoff race.

  5. Breadbaker on September 4th, 2009 7:02 pm

I would do a Sweeney for Sweeney swap.

  6. scott19 on September 4th, 2009 7:06 pm

Besides the fact that he’s got more upside, I think it’d be cool to get Kurt Suzuki over here as well…

The inevitable “Language Lessons” Mariners TV ad where Ichi’s “teaching” Kurt Japanese and Kurt’s “teaching” Ichi English would be classic. :)

  7. TeamIDFC on September 4th, 2009 7:06 pm

    Suzuki +1, please!

  8. msb on September 4th, 2009 7:06 pm

Oh, thank goodness, Nomar is playing.

I was worried the FSN ad campaign about the Ms facing Nomar & the A’s would be for naught.

  9. msb on September 4th, 2009 7:14 pm

Any explanation for Mortenson rather than Mazzaro?

  10. joser on September 4th, 2009 7:20 pm

Speaking of all things Suzuki, if you have not yet, you must, must check out the pic on Drayer’s blog. You thought South Pacific Lager was the ultimate in desirable Unobtanium? It doesn’t even come close the awesome item she now possesses.

  11. joser on September 4th, 2009 7:21 pm

Also, the Bay Area picked this long weekend to shut down the Bay Bridge, so the team is commuting by BART. And you thought WSDOT made inexplicable road maintenance decisions?

  12. msb on September 4th, 2009 7:30 pm

The one I want is Ichiro’s special tie, with the picture of Ikkyu on it.

  13. Lauren, token chick on September 4th, 2009 7:33 pm

I have to say I’d be pretty pissed if someone was coming around tickling me all the time. Just one more sign that Ichiro is more awesome than I am.

Hello, bases loaded! No worries, we won’t score.

  14. Liam on September 4th, 2009 7:34 pm

The walks are nice when it’s not the Mariners pitchers giving them out.

  15. Lauren, token chick on September 4th, 2009 7:34 pm

Yessss! Reverse psychology always works. Even in the ether.

  16. scott19 on September 4th, 2009 7:35 pm

    Thank you, Jack Wilson!

  17. Lauren, token chick on September 4th, 2009 7:37 pm

    Ich!

  18. scott19 on September 4th, 2009 7:39 pm

    …And thank you, Ichiro!

  19. scott19 on September 4th, 2009 7:41 pm

With Guti joining the hit parade…

    Will J-Lo keep it going?

  20. msb on September 4th, 2009 7:42 pm

    There you go, Ryan.

  21. Sam W. on September 4th, 2009 7:49 pm

This is weird. The Mariners scored….. 4x’s!

  22. scott19 on September 4th, 2009 7:53 pm

    There you go, Ryan.

No kidding…it seems like almost every start out since coming back he’s either run into a Cy Young candidate (Halladay, Greinke) or some crafty old geezer who can still pitch once in a while (Pettitte) and winds up being starved for run support.

  23. juneau_fan on September 4th, 2009 8:06 pm

Poor Kenji, never getting a break.

    But getting more playing time!

  24. msb on September 4th, 2009 8:09 pm

Wonder if it would be possible to quantify how unlucky he has been this season?

  25. fiftyone on September 4th, 2009 8:13 pm

I’d like to quantify how good he is tonight: Very.

  26. DMZ on September 4th, 2009 8:16 pm

    To the USSM Lab computers!

  27. mw3 on September 4th, 2009 8:19 pm

After watching Pennington the last inning I think I take him over JaWilson.

  28. mw3 on September 4th, 2009 8:20 pm

    See!

  29. scott19 on September 4th, 2009 8:20 pm

Wow…this Pennington kid is something else defensively!

  30. juneau_fan on September 4th, 2009 8:22 pm

    To the USSM Lab computers!

I fear that my Friday rum and coke may be a bit strong. I instantly heard the old Batman theme music when I read that line.

Or should I be visualizing something like the Justice League’s secret lair?

  31. scott19 on September 4th, 2009 8:27 pm

I fear that my Friday rum and coke may be a bit strong. I instantly heard the old Batman theme music when I read that line.

If the Batcave is suddenly tilting on ya like the Joker’s secret hideout, Juneau, then you’ll know that Captain and Coke was too strong! ;)

  32. fiftyone on September 4th, 2009 8:28 pm

Don’t feel too special kid. Everyone in the stands goes home with at least one souvenir tonight.

  33. Breadbaker on September 4th, 2009 8:30 pm

I don’t drink, but I immediately wanted to say, “to the Batcave!”

  34. msb on September 4th, 2009 8:31 pm

Where is Alfred when you need him.

  35. scott19 on September 4th, 2009 8:39 pm

Showing my age here a bit…but having watched the re-runs everyday after school when I was a kid, I always thought Yvonne Craig (a.k.a Batgirl) was really cute.

  36. Breadbaker on September 4th, 2009 8:40 pm

The “Yuni would have made that play” club will be meeting in Dayton Moore’s office. Nice play, Jack.

  37. juneau_fan on September 4th, 2009 8:48 pm

I killed USSM when I tried to post!

    *sloshy drunk now*

I just had to comment on hearing that Blowers and Sims take two different cabs to the game.

Where’s that booth chemistry that the team needs to win???

  38. mw3 on September 4th, 2009 8:50 pm

I would only share a cab with Blowers if he always paid.

  39. Sam W. on September 4th, 2009 8:55 pm

wow. That hit off of his glove and then over the fence.

  40. juneau_fan on September 4th, 2009 8:56 pm

Did Guti run into the parking lot for that ball? He moved into the shadows there…do they not have all the lights on?

  41. scott19 on September 4th, 2009 8:56 pm

    Oh crap, Guti…

  42. mw3 on September 4th, 2009 8:56 pm

What is amazing is that most of the time Guti catches that.

  43. scott19 on September 4th, 2009 9:03 pm

To be fair, I think that was hit in the general direction of the shadows of Al Davis’ Oakland Raiders Love Boat, ahem, luxury boxes.

  44. Sam W. on September 4th, 2009 9:09 pm

Kenji did something, sorta positive. scary

  45. fiftyone on September 4th, 2009 9:09 pm

*waits for inevitable comment about what a productive out that was*

  46. Sam W. on September 4th, 2009 9:13 pm

RRS going 8. I like not having to use our bullpen.

  47. fiftyone on September 4th, 2009 9:16 pm

    Great inning RRS.

  48. Liam on September 4th, 2009 9:16 pm

Oops Dave wasn’t keeping track of the outs.

  49. scott19 on September 4th, 2009 9:21 pm

If you don’t come out for the ninth (and Lowe is warming up right now)…great work tonight, RRS.

  50. scott19 on September 4th, 2009 9:22 pm

    That’s tagging it there, J-Lo!

  51. mw3 on September 4th, 2009 9:28 pm

Let us see one of those 100 MPH fastballs Lowe.

  52. juneau_fan on September 4th, 2009 9:31 pm

Great, we have to watch Normar go through his OCD routine one more time.

I always want to go wash my hands…okay, that was mercifully quick.

  53. Lauren, token chick on September 4th, 2009 9:35 pm

    Hurrah!

  54. scott19 on September 4th, 2009 9:37 pm

    Yaaayy!

  55. mw3 on September 4th, 2009 9:44 pm

    Only seven back!

  56. msb on September 4th, 2009 9:48 pm

What got into Nomar tonight? HR? Big hit in the 9th?

  57. msb on September 4th, 2009 9:48 pm

    Only seven back!

    from whom?

  58. scott19 on September 4th, 2009 9:52 pm

What got into Nomar tonight? HR? Big hit in the 9th?

Must’ve eaten his Wheaties this morning.

  59. mw3 on September 4th, 2009 9:52 pm

    From Boston.

  60. msb on September 4th, 2009 9:54 pm

    Ah, Wild Card.

btw, I love that smiling Ichiro fellow.

  61. scott19 on September 4th, 2009 9:55 pm

Oh, no…just ’cause they’re only seven back in the WC after tonight’s game, Pittman is drinking his “gonna go all the way” Kool-Aid again.

  62. msb on September 4th, 2009 10:04 pm

    He’s an optimistic kinda guy.

  63. Colm on September 4th, 2009 11:33 pm

Maybe he thinks he’ll be tall one day.

  64. Breadbaker on September 5th, 2009 12:03 am

We went to the movies and left after the eighth. If McLaren were still here, wouldn’t he have brought in Batista for the ninth? After all, he was an “established closer.” Whatever our nits are with current management, they’re millions of miles past that.

  65. scott19 on September 5th, 2009 1:52 am

RRS left after 106 pitches, though looked pretty decent yet in the eighth…and I think Wak went with Lowe just because he used DA two previous days in a row.

  66. msb on September 5th, 2009 7:54 am

    He’s an optimistic kinda guy.

Ah, turned out that what he meant was that even if you know logically it’s unlikely to happen, it is fun to see games that “mean something”, which is a big change from last year

  67. Liam on September 5th, 2009 10:05 am

David Aardsma pitched an inning in the previous three games, not two.

  68. scott19 on September 5th, 2009 10:56 am

David Aardsma pitched an inning in the previous three games, not two.

You’re right, my mistake. I had that horrid 10-0 blowout from Monday night stuck in my mind yet, and lost track of a game there for some reason.

But yes, it is a lot more fun to play games that are at least somewhat meaningful in September than not to.
