Game 148, Yankees at Mariners

Burnett vs Hernandez, 7:10 pm.

Happy Felix Day!

Over the last few weeks, various people have written in to request a post on Felix’s chances of winning the Cy Young. Here’s the very short version – he shouldn’t get a single first place vote. Zack Greinke has been the best pitcher in the American League, and it’s not even close. Felix has been good – Greinke has been great.

I love Felix, but he’s not the Cy Young winner this year. Not with what Greinke is doing in KC.

The biggest problem Greinke faces is the team’s record, and I absolutely HATE that it might keep him from winning the Cy Young

  2. msb on September 18th, 2009 7:08 pm

If Grienke were a true CY Young candidate, he would will his team to win games, like that Sabathia kid.

  3. msb on September 18th, 2009 7:09 pm

    Greinke.

    I before E, except after G.

Can an MVP not have as many hits as Harold Baines?

  6. DMZ on September 18th, 2009 7:18 pm

Loooot of empty seats for a Yankee game.

  7. msb on September 18th, 2009 7:21 pm

They were still flogging the series at the ballpark on thursday

  8. DMZ on September 18th, 2009 7:21 pm

They’re hurting at the box office if they can’t sell this one out. Ow.

  9. Greeff on September 18th, 2009 7:27 pm

  12. Breadbaker on September 18th, 2009 7:38 pm

It’s Rosh Hashanah. That’s gotta cut into attendance by, I dunno, 50 people.

  13. msb on September 18th, 2009 7:48 pm

Please fix the offense, Uncle Jack.

    Yay Guti!

  16. TWownsU on September 18th, 2009 8:11 pm

I have tickets and am disappointed that it ended up with Felix pitching today. Felix vs Sabathia would’ve been awesome.

In other news, I love you Guti.

  17. TWownsU on September 18th, 2009 8:12 pm

    to tommorrow’s game*

I thought I had that in there.

  18. JerBear on September 18th, 2009 8:13 pm

    Gutifreakingerrez!!! I love that man.

  19. Carson on September 18th, 2009 8:13 pm

I don’t know, Dave. Are you sure Guttierez can’t repeat this? He looks really dang good out there.

If not, I can’t see the regression being too large.

  20. Sports on a Schtick on September 18th, 2009 8:15 pm

Usually I complain about the offense but not this weekend. This might be a brutal few days.

  21. Liam on September 18th, 2009 8:25 pm

Hall should play right behind Lopez, let Guti and Ichiro cover the outfield.

  22. Nayners on September 18th, 2009 8:27 pm

These Yankee fans are annoying. Nice catch by franklin!

  23. msb on September 18th, 2009 8:40 pm

It really is unfair to consider it an even matchup– Felix vs Yankee line-up or Mariners vs Burnett.

  24. Liam on September 18th, 2009 8:49 pm

I really hope we can score some runs, the Yankees are 155-1 after 8 innings in the last two years.

  25. Liam on September 18th, 2009 8:49 pm

    *when leading after 8 innings

  26. pinball1973 on September 18th, 2009 8:54 pm

Could someone remind me why this R. Johnson character (Mickey? Goofy, maybe? Marmaduke?) is catching more than Joh?
I simply can’t remember anything that made sense (Washburn’s backstabbing certainly wouldn’t count). In R.’s hands, the expression “tols of ignorance” gains additional ironic meanings.

  27. pinball1973 on September 18th, 2009 8:56 pm

um… “tools”, although “tolls of ignorance” also has a certain ring about it.

  28. georgmi on September 18th, 2009 9:05 pm

Hey, don’t be dissin’ on our Sarah, there. He works really really hard to be that mediocre.

  29. pinball1973 on September 18th, 2009 9:06 pm

“Mediocre” would seem to be a veritable “Holy Grail” in this case.

  30. kenshabby on September 18th, 2009 9:10 pm

    Go Wak! Get thrown out!

  31. georgmi on September 18th, 2009 9:12 pm

I don’t think Derek Jeter is a very good shortstop.

  32. littlesongs on September 18th, 2009 9:13 pm

That call on Ichiro was a steaming pile of feces.

Karma seemed to flummox Jeter there for a moment.

  33. msb on September 18th, 2009 9:23 pm

Wak wasn’t going to get thrown out, because that umpire was so supremely sure of his own absolute correctness that nothing would shake him.

  34. Breadbaker on September 18th, 2009 9:37 pm

Does anyone ever use the line, “you’re going to look like an idiot when you see the replay”?

  35. littlesongs on September 18th, 2009 9:38 pm

If Rob Johnson goes yard against Mariano Rivera, I will cook a boot on my backyard bar-be-que and eat it.

  36. Breadbaker on September 18th, 2009 9:44 pm

Wak wasn’t going to pinch hit until littlesongs’ post.

  37. jordan on September 18th, 2009 9:45 pm

    C’MON ICHIRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  38. jordan on September 18th, 2009 9:46 pm

    OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!

  39. littlesongs on September 18th, 2009 9:46 pm

I didn’t catch the whole Costas and the Boys in Blue interview on the MLB network, but Breadbaker’s question should definitely have been on his list.

    Ichiro!

  40. juneau_fan on September 18th, 2009 9:46 pm

    It can’t happen two nights in a row…O. M. G!!!!!!!!!!!!

  41. Breadbaker on September 18th, 2009 9:46 pm

    155-2

  42. georgmi on September 18th, 2009 9:46 pm

    Holy effing crap.

  43. Liam on September 18th, 2009 9:46 pm

155-1 for the Yankees when leading after 8 innings over the last two years,

    it’s now 155-2

    ICHIRO HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  45. Paul L on September 18th, 2009 9:47 pm

“I thought the media would be all over me.” I love Ichiro! quotes!!

  53. juneau_fan on September 18th, 2009 9:49 pm

    What’s gotten into Ichiro?

First, that was the hugest home run I’ve ever seen him hit.

Second, I swear I’ve saw him spit in the dugout.

Third, the fist pumps in the air before entering the dugout? I don’t think I’ve ever seen him that stoked.

    And Felix wins? Hell yeah!

Ah shit, Sweeney for the post-game chat.

  54. littlesongs on September 18th, 2009 9:50 pm

Q: How do you keep Ichiro! safe from pranks after a game?

    A: Interview Sweeney.

  55. kenshabby on September 18th, 2009 9:50 pm

  56. itea on September 18th, 2009 9:52 pm

    that worked

  57. Paul L on September 18th, 2009 9:52 pm

I’m pacing around the house. Haven’t done that in years.

  58. TaeBoJackson on September 18th, 2009 9:53 pm

A less selfish player would have only hit a double.

    Ichibomb for the win!

  59. GoMariners on September 18th, 2009 9:53 pm

OMG, OMG, OMG!!!Felix will win Cy Young!!! OMG!!! Ichiro is GOD!!!

  60. JerBear on September 18th, 2009 9:57 pm

Holy Freaking Ichiro!!! That has to be one of my favorite games of the year!

  61. msb on September 18th, 2009 9:57 pm

Shannon was trying to talk to Ichiro on the radio side, and first Jr ran past, then the bullpen all had to give him congrats, and then Sweeney had to give him an ice-creamy hug after his FSN interview, and the Jr ice-cream pie.

  62. JerBear on September 18th, 2009 9:59 pm

Oh, and I said it last night and I’ll say it again – I’ve never seen Ichi so animated and happy… I don’t believe there’s anything he can’t do right now. We’re damn lucky to have him!

  63. littlesongs on September 18th, 2009 10:02 pm

I hope that this statement is taken in the spirit of respect for both men, but it seems like the franchise torch was just passed from Ken Griffey to Ichiro Suzuki in that one moment.

That hit was so much like a magical shot in the Kingdome in the old days. I feel that same adrenalin and excitement in a whole new way. It took Ichiro! a long time, but he earned it.

  64. Paul L on September 18th, 2009 10:06 pm

Games like this remind me of how it used to be, and how much fun it was.

Hopefully we’ll get there again soon.

FWIW, I think the change in Ichiro has a lot to do with Jr, and possibly to a lesser extent Sweeney.

  65. juneau_fan on September 18th, 2009 10:09 pm

I hope that this statement is taken in the spirit of respect for both men, but it seems like the franchise torch was just passed from Ken Griffey to Ichiro Suzuki in that one moment.

Not according to Sweeney. It’s Griffey’s team and ‘they’ are doing everything they can to get him to stay.

Talk about taking the buzz off with a post-game interview.

First, who says you’re going to be around next year to hold that door open, Sweeney? And second, why in the world would it be a good thing for either of you to be around?

    Crazy.

  66. Breadbaker on September 18th, 2009 10:18 pm

Sweeney has been doing a PR campaign all season that assumes that everyone on the team at any one point in time must remain. When you’re the 25th man, anyone who leaves was better than you.

  67. Paul L on September 18th, 2009 10:18 pm

    @juneau_fan:

It’s pretty clear that the players love Sweeney & Jr. It’s the FOs job to see through that and do whatever makes the team better, even if it POs the team.

    Should be an interesting offseason.

BTW, Kreuger is now saying it’s between CC and Felix for the Cy Young. What a moran.

  68. Kazinski on September 18th, 2009 10:18 pm

Jeez, what stupidity. Over at the LoHud Yankee’s game thread, they are ripping Girardi for giving Ichiro an IBB with first base open.

Putting the winning run on base without making him swing the bat is pretty stupid. Putting a speedster like Ichiro on base would be stupider. And as good a player as Ichiro is, it’s not like he has 40hr’s.

  69. JerBear on September 18th, 2009 10:20 pm

I say they go ahead and bring Griffey back next year as the Designated Ichiro Tickler… If he can have such a positive effect on Ichi, I don’t care if he wastes a roster space.

  70. Paul L on September 18th, 2009 10:22 pm

JerBear, I tend to agree. I’m sure that annoys Derek & Dave to no end :)

  71. Liam on September 18th, 2009 10:53 pm

BTW, Kreuger is now saying it’s between CC and Felix for the Cy Young. What a moran.

Are you sure, he was giving it to Greinke before the game.

  72. mln on September 18th, 2009 11:07 pm

Ichiro with a dramatic, game-wining homerun off of future Hall-of-Famer Mariano Rivera to beat the Yankees.

Ding Dong the Witch is Dead!

  73. scott19 on September 18th, 2009 11:35 pm

Enjoying at the bar, so a bit late to the party…but yes, as Niehaus might put it, the finish was “just indescribable”. :)

  74. pinball1973 on September 19th, 2009 12:05 am

    I like this “Ichiro” fellow!

  75. fargomsfan on September 19th, 2009 6:37 am

    Moron.

I love it when Ichiro flirts with the women

Love the call back! 0 walk-off hits before this year, 3 this season. Think it works the way Jr.’s shot on August 12th, 1995 works? 10 games in 10 days?? Alright, I’m gonna wake up now…

  77. Anthony on September 19th, 2009 2:57 pm

    *edit August 24th…
