Game 158, A’s at Mariners

DMZ · September 30, 2009 at 6:31 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Mortensen v Morrow.

Saunders in left, Hannahan at first. Johjima gets a turn behind the plate. Griffey DHs, so prepare for another night of will-he won’t-he commentary. If we’re really lucky, we’ll get to see Branyan pinch-hit. And Batista. Just to make things exciting, you know.

Saunders! Did they finally decide Hall was too hobbled, or is it just finally a righty?

  2. Holmes on September 30th, 2009 6:52 pm

Morrow needs to fricking pitch deep into this game and show that he is worth keeping around in a Mariner’s uniform next season and beyond. The kid has had so many ups and downs in his career… I dont know if that is his fault or the M’s (Front Office) fault. I just hope he can establish some confidence tonight and show everybody a glimpse of his potential and future.

  3. Liam on September 30th, 2009 6:53 pm

If Griffey doesn’t retire, how many “I told you so” posts can we expect? He didn’t even meet the worst case projection you made back in February.

  4. msb on September 30th, 2009 7:01 pm

He didn’t even meet the worst case projection you made back in February.

were the projections based on playing part-time?

  5. Mike Snow on September 30th, 2009 7:08 pm

Batista pinch-hitting? That I want to see.

  6. Liam on September 30th, 2009 7:09 pm

    Projecting new Mariner Griffey’s offense

  7. msb on September 30th, 2009 7:13 pm

thanks– I completely forgot about that topic

  8. juneau_fan on September 30th, 2009 7:26 pm

How did Jamie Moyer tear his groin muscles while sitting in the bullpen? Have the Phillies been using him?

Then again, he has all those kids; perhaps it wasn’t a sports related injury.

  9. msb on September 30th, 2009 7:28 pm

“Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer will require season-ending surgery to repair two torn muscles in his left groin and one in his lower left abdominal region.

Moyer had sustained all three injuries in the seventh inning of Tuesday’s 7-4 win over the Astros. He told team doctor Michael Ciccotti he felt a sharp pain on his inner left thigh after throwing his final pitch of the game.”

  10. Liam on September 30th, 2009 7:31 pm

    Fly away! #18 for Griffey.

  11. juneau_fan on September 30th, 2009 7:32 pm

He might get to 20 for the season after all.

  12. Holmes on September 30th, 2009 7:34 pm

    I <3 Griffey

  13. juneau_fan on September 30th, 2009 7:34 pm

    OUCH.

  14. msb on September 30th, 2009 7:35 pm

You know what they say– if you watch him in batting practice he hits home runs all the time, and could hit them any time he wanted, but that just isn’t his game.

  15. Liam on September 30th, 2009 7:36 pm

I noticed that while jogging to first, Johjima only had one arm swinging.

  16. msb on September 30th, 2009 7:39 pm

How fast will it swell up so he can’t bend it?

  17. Holmes on September 30th, 2009 7:39 pm

who in the crap are these guys batting right now

  18. Slippery Elmer on September 30th, 2009 7:40 pm

Griffey now has an OPS of 5.000 against Mortensen.

  19. msb on September 30th, 2009 7:44 pm

Apparently, Griffey was bouncing around (in between his traditional Make A Wish duties) announcing to one and all that they should just go ahead and win all the remaining games.

  20. Liam on September 30th, 2009 7:45 pm

If only the entire league was made up of players that the shift is used against. Then we wouldn’t need to worry about replacing Adrian Beltre.

  21. Holmes on September 30th, 2009 7:51 pm

If teams put the shift( right handed batter shift, of course) on for johjima i swear to gosh he would bat under .200

  22. juneau_fan on September 30th, 2009 7:53 pm

    Only the second?

Goodness, this is going to be a long game unless the hook comes out for this guy.

  23. joser on September 30th, 2009 7:54 pm

Ichiro has run out of other things to do so now he’s going for the cycle?

  24. Mike G. on September 30th, 2009 7:55 pm

Ichiro with a cycle brewing? Now my evening plans are set.

  25. Mike G. on September 30th, 2009 7:58 pm

WE: 93%? Miguel Batista will have something to say about that.

  26. killer_ewok18 on September 30th, 2009 7:58 pm

    How selfish.

  27. joser on September 30th, 2009 8:01 pm

Remember when the M’s had games like this? Against the A’s? Starter gets rocked, errors advance runners, everything goes to hell and you’ve turned the game off before the 3rd inning. Yeah. Payback is a bitch.

  28. juneau_fan on September 30th, 2009 8:02 pm

Damn, the M’s will be shut out from now on. How will Ichiro get his cycle?

  29. msb on September 30th, 2009 8:03 pm

It has been a year of so many firsts for Ichiro; why not the cycle?

  30. naviomelo on September 30th, 2009 8:07 pm

Kilby’s Gameday picture is hilarious due to the background and the cap he’s wearing.

  31. msb on September 30th, 2009 8:15 pm

    Kilby has the damnest delivery.

  32. scott19 on September 30th, 2009 8:16 pm

It has been a year of so many firsts for Ichiro; why not the cycle?

Which would be completely awesome, of course.

Forgive me for asking, since I’m sure it has here a number of times before, but did Ichi ever hit for the cycle with Orix, I wonder?

  33. juneau_fan on September 30th, 2009 8:23 pm

Have the A’s applied too much oil to their gloves tonight? Talk about some butter fingers.

  34. Carson on September 30th, 2009 8:24 pm

Man, Saunders is fast for his size.

  35. juneau_fan on September 30th, 2009 8:24 pm

Bets on the A’s walking Ichiro the rest of the night?

  36. Liam on September 30th, 2009 8:29 pm

Man, Saunders is fast for his size.

Maybe we’re all just used to seeing Richie Sexson run the bases.

  37. Breadbaker on September 30th, 2009 8:35 pm

Maybe we’re all just used to seeing Richie Sexson run the basesback to the dugout.

    Fixed.

  38. Mike Snow on September 30th, 2009 8:44 pm

So, did they choose the wrong guy to “pick to click”?

  39. hark on September 30th, 2009 8:44 pm

Adam Moore with first MLB home run! Other way! Nice!

  40. Holmes on September 30th, 2009 8:46 pm

Opposite field power from A. Moore. Good Stuff

  41. Breadbaker on September 30th, 2009 8:46 pm

Oh, God, they’re referring to the guy in Tampa as a petulant child. Please drop it, Sims. It’s nice that the hometown fan was being cooperative and happy. The other guy was entirely within his rights, okay?

  42. msb on September 30th, 2009 8:50 pm

I wonder if Sims missed that part of the story– someone would have had to show him the blog story

  43. PositivePaul on September 30th, 2009 8:57 pm

    This game is plenty exciting.

    Plenty.

No Batista ever again. Four more days until the official “No More Batista Day”!

  44. Holmes on September 30th, 2009 9:01 pm

ehhhhhh i want to see a replay of that last play with Ichiro.. it appeared to me that he was safe

  45. hark on September 30th, 2009 9:03 pm

ehhhhhh i want to see a replay of that last play with Ichiro.. it appeared to me that he was safe

I rewound it and advanced frame-by-frame on my DVR. Yes, he was safe.

  46. hark on September 30th, 2009 9:06 pm

Morrow has recorded 18 outs. Of those 18, 5 are K’s and 6 are ground outs. That’s a 39% flyball rate, grouping “line drives” and “pop ups” as fly balls. Good, bad, neutral?

  47. Holmes on September 30th, 2009 9:07 pm

^well that is a shame the ump doesn’t make the right call just cause the M’s are up big.

  48. DarkKnight1680 on September 30th, 2009 9:12 pm

Did anyone notice Griffey’s Home/Away splits? Is this just sample size noise or has he really been circa-2000 Griffey at Safeco? Has anyone ever had a home/away platoon?

For those who didn’t see, Griffey at home:
273/388/539 in 182 PAs, not including tonight’s homer.

  49. Liam on September 30th, 2009 9:13 pm

Memorabilia is a strange thing. When Adam Moore got his first hit, Sims was talking about how he would be getting a ball back with his name misspelled, the wrong date, etc. (They also showed a clip of Sweeney throwing the ball into the stands). It would all be a joke though, as he would eventually get the real one in due time. For all Moore knows, the first ball he got was the real one.

  50. Farmer Cam on September 30th, 2009 9:15 pm

oh Brandon Morrow… such a tease. Where has this been all year?

  51. kenshabby on September 30th, 2009 9:17 pm

I <3 this version of Morrow and want him to stay.

  52. henryv on September 30th, 2009 9:17 pm

Is it just me, or is the strike zone all over the place tonight?

  53. Mike Snow on September 30th, 2009 9:22 pm

As long as the strike zone is all over the same places as Morrow’s command, who cares?

  54. henryv on September 30th, 2009 9:22 pm

Apparently Henry Rodriguez can throw the ball really, really fast.

  55. hark on September 30th, 2009 9:24 pm

Holy crap I love Brandon… I wish he’d always love me back in this way.

  56. hark on September 30th, 2009 9:27 pm

As long as the strike zone is all over the same places as Morrow’s command, who cares?

Morrow’s actually had great command all night, and the strike zone is fairly consistent: PitchFX

If anything, he’s been a TINY bit squeezed on the edges of the zone.

  57. Holmes on September 30th, 2009 9:29 pm

anyone know the maximum velocity a baseball can travel that is thrown by a human?

  58. Mike G. on September 30th, 2009 9:41 pm

WE: 100%. Apparently no team has ever come back from being down 7 runs in the 9th inning on the road.

  59. DMZ on September 30th, 2009 9:42 pm

    Practically? ~110.

  60. Farmer Cam on September 30th, 2009 9:45 pm

    pitchcount?

  61. Jeff Nye on September 30th, 2009 9:48 pm

Oh, God, they’re referring to the guy in Tampa as a petulant child. Please drop it, Sims. It’s nice that the hometown fan was being cooperative and happy. The other guy was entirely within his rights, okay?

Okay, I don’t want to rehash it TOO much, but I’ll just say this:

“Within his rights” or not, there is a right way and a wrong way to handle situations like that, and by all accounts, Mr. Muscles in Tampa handled it in about as wrong a way as possible.

  62. DarkKnight1680 on September 30th, 2009 9:51 pm

I must have missed this Tampa thing…link?

  63. Farmer Cam on September 30th, 2009 9:53 pm

yes… link to the Tampa uhhh… thingy

  64. hark on September 30th, 2009 9:55 pm

    Farmer Cam–

    Morrow’s pitch count? 105 pitches/70 strikes

  65. Phightin Phils on September 30th, 2009 9:56 pm

    Congratulations Mariners! *Winners*

  66. Liam on September 30th, 2009 9:57 pm

I must have missed this Tampa thing…link?

Jose Lopez hit his 25th home run in Tampa and wanted the ball back. The local crew tried to persuade him to hand it over, but he wouldn’t budge. Sims was saying how he should give it up and made a joke while he was being escorted out of his seat that it was going to be removed by force behind the scenes.

    M’s over .500! Woo!

  69. joser on September 30th, 2009 10:43 pm

Wasn’t there someone posting earlier in the season that he had a bet with his bro-in-law to get free drinks for every game the M’s won over 60? I assume we haven’t heard from him recently because he won’t be sobering up until November.

  70. Liam on September 30th, 2009 10:51 pm

(Every M’s win from #65 on is a beer won from my brother-in-law in a preseason bet.)

That’s me. 28 beers and counting. I’ll be collecting at Halloween.

(bet was, he gives me a beer for every win they get over 54, I give him one for ever win they get under 75.)

I fear I’m going to be giving some back, though. I bet him a six-pack for every win the Huskies got over 3, and they’re already at 2.
