Current depth chart for your 2010 M’s

DMZ · December 19, 2009 at 12:22 pm · Filed Under Mariners

I swear they’re making moves based on what people last said they wouldn’t do, and when I posted last. So here’s this getting a little more complicated.

Pitching
SP-R Felix Hernandez
SP-L Cliff Lee. That’s not a typo. They really traded for Cliff Lee.
SP-L Ryan Rowland-Smith
SP-R Brandon Morrow
(one of:
SP-R Ian Snell
SP-R Doug Fister
SP-R Yusmeiro Petit)

RP-R David Aardsma
RP-R Mark Lowe
RP-R Shawn Kelley
RP-R Sean White
RP-L Jason Vargas
RP-L Garrett Olson
RP-L Luke French (?)
RP-R Kanekoa Texeira

Position players
C-R Rob Johnson
C-R Adam Moore
1B-L Mike Carp
2B-R Jose Lopez
SS-R Jack Wilson
3B-B Chone Figgins
LF-L Michael Saunders
CF-R Franklin Gutierrez
RF-L Ichiro!
DH-L Ken Griffey Jr.
DH/LF-B Milton Bradley
UT-R Bill Hall (IF/OF-R?)
IF-L Jack Hannahan
OF-L Ryan Langerhans

As Dave notes, that’s likely to have Saunders dropping. But the team hasn’t said anything yet, so…

Plus we know there’s another shoe to drop. It’s not going to be Bay, because they’ve been tied to Bay. What’s the least-predicted storyline? Even Randy Johnson-Chuck Armstrong reconciliation’s been thought of. Red Sox accidentally throw Kevin Youklis into a swap of minor leaguers after Zduriencik uses his hypnogaze? They’re first on an Astros salary purge, picking up Berkman? Funny joke, right, but they just snagged Cliff Lee. Cliff Lee is a Mariner. Why not dream of Pujols?

It won’t be the one you most expect, obviously. And it won’t be the one you least expect. What’s the move we most medium expect?

  2. cdowley on December 19th, 2009 12:45 pm

Luke Scott still seems somewhat likely, which means it probably won’t happen.

They’re supposedly talking to Milwaukee. Mat Gamel has been specifically mentioned, but so has Prince Fielder in the somewhat recent past. On the batshit crazy idea spectrum, what about Ryan Braun? I doubt we’d have what it takes to get him, but I would have said the same about Lee two weeks ago…

  3. bilbo27 on December 19th, 2009 12:53 pm

After the Putz for a bagillian players trade, the Lee for ridiculously cheap, and now the Silva for something trades, I’m personally convinced jack Zduriencik is going to use his Jedi mind tricks on Jed Hoyer and somehow get Adrian Gonzalez for Jose Lopez and the 45 piece pack of big red gum. 😉

  4. robbbbbb on December 19th, 2009 1:03 pm

Given Z’s track record, I’d expect a three-team deal with everyone moving a few parts in every direction, and everyone getting something they want out of the deal.

That’s horribly vague and non-committal, but hey, that’s what we’re left with at this point. The M’s front office has excellent discipline and a good conception of what their trading partners value. So you can expect the M’s to get value back.

  5. robbbbbb on December 19th, 2009 1:04 pm

On a side note: There’s been a ton of tweets and posts on blogs about Z’s ability to get deals done. Someone really ought to collect ’em. Maybe make up a poster to give to Z at the next USSM event.

  6. IwearMsHats on December 19th, 2009 1:06 pm

Are we at the point where the expected is exactly what Zduriencik will do? We are all expecting the unexpected and the expected IS the unexpected at this point.

  7. Mr. Egaas on December 19th, 2009 1:24 pm

Something tells me Snell is more of a sure thing for the 4th slot in the rotation than Morrow.

  8. Marinerman1979 on December 19th, 2009 1:31 pm

Ian Snell is not competing for a roster spot. Come on now. He has the job already.

  9. The Ancient Mariner on December 19th, 2009 1:32 pm

Look, just because something’s been rumored doesn’t mean it isn’t real. Sure, the Zduriencik FO is amazingly leakproof, but that’s not true of a lot of the FOs with which they deal. No leaks at our end doesn’t guarantee no leaks at the other.

I’d like to see Scott or Doumit, but my hope is that Z can talk his old boss into giving up Gamel for a package around Morrow.

  10. joser on December 19th, 2009 1:32 pm

    Why not dream of Pujols?

Damn it man, now that you mentioned it, it can’t happen. I’ve thought of a couple of awesome moves but I’m not going to post them.

Then, when they actually happen, I’ll get on here and take full credit for them. Just watch.

  11. argh on December 19th, 2009 1:40 pm

I’ve got a hundred large down in Vegas on Z resurrecting, reanimating and curing (before spring training) Lou Gherig. Okay, it’s a long shot but the upside is tremendous.

  12. robbbbbb on December 19th, 2009 1:41 pm

We are all expecting the unexpected and the expected IS the unexpected at this point.

Ah, but if the unexpected is the expected, then the expected becomes the unexpected. When the unexpected is the expected, then that’s what you can expect from those who are prone to do the unexpected.

So now, you should expect what you don’t expect, which is what you expect.

    Right?

We’re not getting Berkman. The Astros are too stupid to purge salary. Those two big late season runs to the playoffs a few years ago have left them with permanent delusions.

  15. leon0112 on December 19th, 2009 2:04 pm

Tomorrow Z announces he has traded Jack Wilson and Morrow and Fister for Hanley Ramirez.

Given what has happened in the last 10 days…

  16. sailor_Jesse on December 19th, 2009 2:27 pm

I am with The Ancient Mariner on this one. Ryan Doumit is looking like our next best addition to the team. There is some obvious injury risk, but were talking about a fairly young, switch hitting masher that grew up in the Northwest. After looking at all of the other options at C and 1B, he is the best option and can fill both needs and he is under team control relatively cheap. I wonder what the Pirates would want for him?

  17. The Ancient Mariner on December 19th, 2009 2:34 pm

leon — more likely Josh Wilson, as Jack wouldn’t save the Fish any money.

  18. wayupwaydown on December 19th, 2009 2:54 pm

Someone mentioned to me this idea: A package with Morrow included for Carl Crawford. Maybe send Bradley with him.

  19. skjes on December 19th, 2009 2:59 pm

You’re thinking way too small here. Why would Z only settle for Pujols? We also need a veteran catcher, so it’d need to be a three-team trade to net us Pujols and Mauer for Rob Johnson and a couple of AA role players.

  20. joser on December 19th, 2009 3:11 pm

Given Z’s track record, I’d expect a three-team deal with everyone moving a few parts in every direction, and everyone getting something they want out of the deal.

The funny thing is that even though everybody gets what they want, the M’s come out ahead. As somebody over at LL said of Zduriencik:
“The man just has a gift for giving people things that they really shouldn’t want in the first place”

This is one of my favorite parts of this depth chart – the fact that hels our No. 5 starter. That’s the kind of guy that even seriously good teams would love to have as their fifth SP.
Oh, and also… cliff lee cliff lee hee hee waouw cliff lee oh my god cliff lee is on our team that wasn’t just some weird dream i had this week no fucking way cliff lee is a mariner oh lordy.

There’s a part of me that isn’t going to believe it until I hear his name come out of Niehaus’ mouth in an early March spring training game.

As players in the NL go completely off my radar, what’s Carlos Delgado’s current health situation and ability to still play 1b? Could he be on Z’s list?

  23. DaveValleDrinkNight on December 19th, 2009 4:02 pm

The Mariners will trade Morrow/Tui to the Justice League for Batman.

Really though, my money says they’re trying to upgrade at 1st or 2nd.

  24. Dave S. on December 19th, 2009 4:04 pm

I’m thinking that it’ll be LaRoche – Baker had the Mariners in talks with LaRoche (via Ryan Langerhans). It makes sense for the amount of money the M’s have and he’d be productive enough.

  25. kg on December 19th, 2009 4:06 pm

    How about Colby Lewis?
    He was dominant in Japan.

    2008 178.0IP,183K,27BB,12HR,151H,2.68ERA
    2009 176.1IP,186K,19BB,13HR,156H,2.96ERA

    Kuroda in Japan
    2007 179.2IP,123K,42BB,20HR,176H,3.56ERA
    Kawakami in Japan
    2008 117.1IP,112K,25BB,11HR,99H,2.30ERA

Lewis wants to play in MLB this year.

Ok, you definitely get extra “off-the-radar” bonus points.

The Mariners will trade Morrow/Tui to the Justice League for Batman.

Well, that would make some sense since Spiderman is right field and the front office is already in the hands of Superman.

  27. Sports on a Schtick on December 19th, 2009 4:22 pm

Hell, even Aroldis Chapman wouldn’t be a complete stunner.

  28. fiftyone on December 19th, 2009 4:24 pm

Technically, it’s Spiderman! with an exclamation point.

  29. bookbook on December 19th, 2009 4:26 pm

Any chance of a Matt LaPorta? He’s apparently undervalued in Cleveland

  30. nathaniel dawson on December 19th, 2009 4:31 pm

I’m thinking that it’ll be LaRoche – Baker had the Mariners in talks with LaRoche (via Ryan Langerhans). It makes sense for the amount of money the M’s have and he’d be productive enough.

Maybe. But he might end up getting 7 or 8 million a year. I have the Mariner’s payroll at about $90.5 MM* right now. Depending on what their budget is, they might already be bumping up against it.

*That includes some guesswork for the arbitration-eligible players.

  31. Dave S. on December 19th, 2009 4:35 pm

7-8 million seems within their price range, still. Most had them pegged at 10-15 million before the Bradley trade, and based on the numbers that cost them 3M a year. For bullpen arms, I expect we’ll see a few non-roster invites.

  32. Koop on December 19th, 2009 5:26 pm

As we start thinking about the makeup of the opening day roster, I notice that the home opener is game 8. Any chance Wak will slot Lee in the 3rd spot so that he can get a ginormous reaction from the opening day crowd? Probably wishful thinking, but it would be awesome.

  33. universalguru on December 19th, 2009 7:32 pm

How about David Segui?… no one would see that coming

  34. Utis on December 19th, 2009 7:49 pm

It looks like the Mike Lowell deal is off. Could the M’s get Beltre back?

  35. ivan on December 19th, 2009 8:19 pm

We’re not getting Berkman. The Astros are too stupid to purge salary. Those two big late season runs to the playoffs a few years ago have left them with permanent delusions.

Whereas I was the one who mentioned Berkman in the first place, I have to admit it’s unlikely for a couple reasons. He’s a Texas guy, he’s a 5-10 player so he could turn down a trade here, he’s making what, $14M a year? Hard to imagine Zduriencik taking on that kind of salary for a 34-year-old.

But admit it, he’d be perfect in this lineup. Only a fool wouldn’t want him here.

And haha, never underestimate any front office’s desire to cut salary. If Jack gets even a hint that Houston might be doing that, he should be calling about Berkman — just to see.

I see also that Mike Lowell HAS flunked his physical and that the Red Sox are stuck with him, and almost certainly won’t be signing Beltre. Please oh please come home, Adrian. Figgins can play second and Lopez can go to first.

  36. Jome20 on December 19th, 2009 9:00 pm

    *First time poster*

I too just saw that Mike Lowell will not be traded to Texas. That leads me to believe Boston won’t be able to sign Beltre.

Who else is in contention to sign Adrian Beltre besides the Mariners?

I’d like to see Beltre return, even if it was just for another year or two.

Would you guys like to see the Mariners resign Beltre? Or go in a different direction?

  37. Snuffy on December 19th, 2009 9:15 pm

Is Lyle Overbay out of the mix? I like him. Good defensively and very good OBA. He’s had years where he is decent vs LHP. It looks he has put his injury years behind him and Toronto is looking to move him. I think he is very underrated. I also like LaRoche, but he may be asking for too much money.

  38. jld on December 19th, 2009 9:36 pm

Any chance Wak will slot Lee in the 3rd spot so that he can get a ginormous reaction from the opening day crowd?

Being that last year Wak gave us Carlos Silva as the home opener SP, I don’t think pleasing the home crowd with a certain pitcher is high on Wak’s list.

Would you guys like to see the Mariners resign Beltre? Or go in a different direction?

While resigning Adrian and then flipping Lopez+ for AGon or Fielder would really turn this into a dream offseason, I would like to see Betre end up someplace he can really excel and be a fan-favorite. He deserves it.

Yeah, I have to agree — though I think it’s a lovely idea. What is kind of a bummer is that RRS is, like Lee, a LHP so he probably won’t be #3 in the rotation either (even if he ends up as #3 based on talent). Would be nice to give him the home opener. In fact, those two being LHP makes it even less likely you’d have Lee #3 because the only way to do that is to make RRS your #1 and put Felix in between — and what are the chances Wak would do that?

But this just means it’ll be easier to get good tickets to Lee’s first start — almost like a second home opener. (In fact, if Felix doesn’t pitch the home opener you can add his first home start as a 3rd home opener).

  40. joser on December 20th, 2009 3:00 am

Speaking of which, RRS seems particularly happy to have a great LHP in the rotation he can learn from.

This is my projected 2010 roster as of now:

    RP Aardsma
    LP French
    RP *Hernandez
    RP Kelley
    LP *Lee
    RP Lowe
    RP *Morrow
    LP *Rowland-Smith
    RP *Snell
    LP Vargas
    RP White

    C BR Johnson
    C BR Moore

    BL 1B Carp
    BR INF Hall
    BB INF Figgins
    BL INF/1B Hannahan
    BR 2B Lopez
    BR SS Ja. Wilson

    BB OF/DH Bradley
    BR CF Gutierrez
    BL OF/1B Langerhans
    BL OF Patterson
    BL RF Suzuki

    BL DH Griffey

    * Starting Pitcher

I have Cory Patterson making in the team based on an outstanding Spring. He brings speed and versatility to the bench and if he can have a season of a few years back he could eventually start in left.

  42. nathaniel dawson on December 20th, 2009 3:53 pm

Well, that’s a lot to hope for. I guess nothing is impossible, but that comes pretty close. Best bet is that the M’s are looking at him to be their “5th” outfielder, playing down in Tacoma to fill in if we get some injuries.

  43. Dregur on December 21st, 2009 10:37 am

Because he’s not good enough to make 10 million a year?
