Morning crow

DMZ · December 19, 2009 at 12:26 pm · Filed Under Mariners

I made some catty comments w/r/t Griffey pushing out Langerhans, who the M’s just re-signed and appear to be intent on using in exactly the role I was complaining he’d be well-suited for. Sorry folks! I don’t know why they non-tendered him and then came back, and I kind of suspect the M’s are taking dares now (“Can’t keep Milton Bradley productive, huh? We’ll show you…”), but there it is: no mockery deserved.

Mmm, mmm, delicious.

I think you should literally eat a crow. It’s the only way you will be forgiven.

My yard is usually full of delicious, delicious crows. You can eat all of them you wish, any time you wish.

Here I was expecting this used as a verb, as in the crowing of a rooster:
“Cock-a-doodle-do you have a 1-2 as good as Felix and Lee?”

Could you make some catty comments that there’s no way the M’s would ever sign Chase Utley and Albert Pujols?

    TIA.

Nothing wrong with you Derek, but I am upset with Jack Zduriencik. I got used to having the M’s make a great move every day. Now, it has been over 24 hours and nothing. I’m bored now.

Not to be a prick, but I have been hoping for an article like this for the last couple days.

Glad for the solid dose of reality, and humility. It reminds me why I read this blog.

You really shouldn’t be too hard on yourself. I seem to remember Dave predicting post-Lee that the front office would probably be done for the rest of the year.

Remember Langerhans was a Jack guy. I felt pretty strongly that he would somehow be back.

Does anyone have a copy of the 2008 opening day roster? wouldn’t it be something to compare it, Bavasi’s last, with the current roster we have now. How many Bavasi guys are still on it?

Felix, Ichiro and Lopez don’t count because they were gotten by someone else. Pat Gillick I believe.

Bellingham Herald said he signed a $525,000 contract with $90,000 being from the Minor’s. I thought I read if he was offered Arb he would get around a million $’s, is that true? If they save almost $500,000 by doing this it makes sense to me. Now we wait and see who Z brings in for 1st base. Can he make a miracle move and bring in another great player by giving up a little bit? Maybe he can do a Jedi mind trick and make someone believe they need Bradley and Saunders for an All-Star 1st baseman.

On the Mariners email list (still going after 16-odd years) I just sent out a roster containing the 27 players with the most playing time in 2008 compared to now.

The players still on the M’s roster are:

    Jose Lopez
    Ichiro!
    Felix
    Mark Lowe
    Hyphen
    Brandon Morrow

That’s it. Some disappeared before Z arrived (Sexson, for example) but in this era of guaranteed contracts, the turnover is remarkable. And of those six, there’s been buzz about trading three of them at some point over the last six months.

By doing this, didn’t they just end up avoiding arbitration with him? If they tendered he would be making arbitration salary. Now he’s presumably signed for MLB minimum.

If we traded Bradley and Saunders for an all-star 1B, we’d have Griffey, Langerhans and Hall in LF. No thanks.

No worries, Dave. And give yourself some time to adjust to writing about a GM who actually over achieves instead of what we are all used to. 🙂

You still have time to be right. Opening day is a long way away, and there are going to be some tough choices made getting down to 25.

Or maybe Zdurincik’s magic will extend to talking the commissioner into giving us a roster exemption for Griffey. Best interests of baseball and all of that.

Bowel movements involving Bavasi turds always bring great relief.

    Just because I can’t resist…

At least we know there’s absolutely no way they’d ever even consider bringing back Yuni.

I’m kidding! I’m kidding! That is not a real challenge, Jack!

  18. ClaytonMiles on December 19th, 2009 9:35 pm

That is gracious of DMZ to say. I think his point was still accurate – by signing Griffey Langerhans was off the roster, an unfair spot for a good, committed, useful and cheap player.
But, in the spirit of all things JackZ, everything has worked out for Langerhans, Griffey and the team. And the universe. Someone start mass-printing the “In Jack We Trust” shirts and design the ‘Trader Jack’ iphone app.
Speaking of working out, is USSM moving its Jan. 9th event to a larger venue? Dave tweeted the option was being explored.
Thanks again for the great posts.

I was curious about this the other day. Of the 44 players that played for the Mariners in 2008, even just for one game and including minor league call-ups, only nine are still with the organization. Pretty amazing if you ask me.

    Lopez
    Ichiro
    Felix
    RRS
    Tui
    Rob “CERA” Johnson
    Morrow
    Mark Lowe
    Feierabend

(Not sure about the current status of Cesar Jimenez but can’t find him on any of our rosters)

As long as those who got tickets in the first one get a chance to “re-up” as it were. I’d just like to keep my ticket #1! 😛

You said Randy Johnson and at that point my mind went blank. All I could see was standing there at Qwest with my son who is too young to know who Randy Johnson was, one year after I introduced him to Ken Griffey Jr.

My mind is still blank. What were you saying after that?

I’ve been out of the country on a cruise, only getting as much news as the New York Times online and ESPN International will provide, which is to say they dealt with the Lee trade as a Phillies story and the Bradley trade as a Cubs story. Last night, I saw someone with a Mariners hat and asked if he was from Seattle. He hadn’t heard about either trade. By the time I gave him the whole scoop he was grinning widely.

Thanks, Jack Zduriencik, you made my Chanukah.
