Felix Signs?

Dave · January 18, 2010 at 9:35 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Keith Law is reporting that the Mariners and Felix Hernandez have agreed to a “multi-year” deal. Let’s all hope that this turns out to be a long term deal. It could just be a two year deal that buys out both of his remaining arb years. Once we hear that it’s a 3+ year deal, the party is on.

    In Jack Z We Trust…..

  3. fiftyone on January 18th, 2010 9:44 pm

Please, four years. I’ve been wondering if Jack’s every offseason move, but especially the DTFT signing, has been executed with an “Are you paying attention, Felix?” undercurrent.

  4. rsrobinson on January 18th, 2010 9:48 pm

Holy moly this would be huge. Please let it be true.

  5. moyerLIVES on January 18th, 2010 9:49 pm

would they do a physical for an arb buyout?

  6. MER on January 18th, 2010 9:50 pm

A two year contract would be a terrible let down. I am hoping for a 5 year contract.

What Jack Z and this front office have done to turn around this franchise in a short time is nothing short of amazing.

If Felix signs a 4-6 year deal, might as well give Jack Z a lifetime contract to be GM!

  11. shortbus on January 18th, 2010 10:06 pm

You don’t fire Jack Z. Jack Z. fires YOU.

  12. daqmajor on January 18th, 2010 10:07 pm

I DONT KNOW WHAT PARTY TO GO TO. There should be another joint LL/USSM get together just for this.

  13. Glen on January 18th, 2010 10:10 pm

Just got the text from KJR AM. Hopefully it is a 3+ year deal. Felix needing a physical is a good sign though!

    Jack Z for President!

  14. rerantz on January 18th, 2010 10:14 pm

I gotta feel like it’s more than just buyout out his last two arbitration years. Just doesn’t feel like that makes a whole lot of sense when Felix’s camp probably feels like if it went to arbitration he’d get record dollars in his final year. I’m guessing 3 years $43 million but am hoping for 5-6 years.

  15. Carson on January 18th, 2010 10:20 pm

Oh, man. Best 30th birthday present of all time.

  16. shortbus on January 18th, 2010 10:20 pm

Why would the team just buy out the arbitration years? That only makes sense if you lowball the player…which is NOT what they want to do with Felix at this point.

This only makes sense as a minimum 3 year deal.

I guess they could buy out his arbitration years at his expected arbitration value just to give him a warm, fuzzy feeling about the organization. That’s about all it would accomplish, though.

  17. thaduck30 on January 18th, 2010 10:24 pm

    This is wonderful!
Now, just get Ben Sheets, and I truly think we have as good of a chance of winning it all as ANYONE.

    1. Felix
    2. Lee
    3. Sheets
    4. RRS
    5. Snell

Could you imagine sending out those three, twice each, in a 7 game series?

And all it would take is raising payroll about 10 million dollars for one year. I’d say its worth it since this is a one and done for Lee(likely). Lets do another one and done with Sheets and really give it a shot.

    Or else. Its…
Felix – Lee – Snell – RRS- Fister

No matter how good our defense is, that staff is NOT good enough to win the division given how weak our offense is. Get Sheets, get to the playoffs, and with those 3, anything is possible.

Oh man this is sweet! A 2 year sounds logical but a 6 year deal would be awesome. One can only hope right? This is a big step. The next one is lee. Wouldn’t that be great if we could lock up Felix and Cliff.

  20. Chris_From_Bothell on January 18th, 2010 10:41 pm

Jack Zduriencik just cured my migraine. If this turns out to be a 6 year deal, he just might have cured all my migraines, ever.

    All hail the king!!!

    Sounding likely that it is a 5 or 6 year deal…WOW Z!!!

    http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100119&content_id=

SI.com’s Jon Heyman reported that the two sides had “made a bit of progress on a five- or six-year deal.”

  23. DRFelix on January 18th, 2010 10:44 pm

Over at MLBTradeRumors a commenter posted that he heard it was:

    6 @ $92M

    No link though.

It that is the case I’d FLIPOUT!

  24. DRFelix on January 18th, 2010 10:47 pm

Now Ben Sheets AND grab Bedard in the wings for a May callup when he’s ready.

Dave – If Z signed Sheets couldn’t we then add RRS & Olson to a package that would include Truinfel/Tui/Saunders for Gonzo?

I would think Z could massage that package in someway for Gonzo.

    3) Top Bullpen from 2009 but w/League added now (bet Fields will be in there in 2010 too)
    4) Top Defense
    5) Great OBP

    6) “Now” if ONLY we could pulloff that Gonzo trade Z

  32. charliemountain on January 18th, 2010 10:58 pm

You’re three players ahead of yourself, DRFelix. This is “lose your mind and scream real loud” exciting as it is.

Of course we want to win now. This is a critical year. But even if we didn’t get Sheets, Bedard OR Gonzalez this year, we’ll be in good shape for years with this. With Felix and Jack Z. working together we should get several shots at this.

  33. DRFelix on January 18th, 2010 11:02 pm

    Agreed!

I’m just soaking the Felix extension in right now. Every move Z does I sit in amazement.

Felix/Nero to Zduriencik: You know, I really just want to play for a contender. Sure I want to get a fair contract, but the most important thing for me is to win and get to the playoffs.

Zduriencik: Felix, look. Did you see what I have done in 2 seasons? Where were you in 2008? The bottom of the AL West. Now everyone is talking, “the mariners had the best offseason”, “they will be real contenders in the AL West”. No doubt you have been hearing about this. Guess what, I traded for Cliff Lee. You know what I gave up for Cliff Lee? Nothing. You see Felix, this is easy for me. I can do this every single year. Yeah, sure Cliff Lee will be gone next season, but you don’t think I can find another ‘Cliff Lee’ deal? Well I have 10 similar deals already in the works. This season we will be contenders, but next season we will be bona fide favorites. Here is our offer, now please sign or I might have to trade you to the Mets.

    Felix/Nero: You make a good point…

First day of the spring semester always sucks, its cold and snowy.

Logging in after passing out from classes to find Felix signed a multi year deal.. I feel like its 90 and sunny and not a cloud in the sky and I’m laying on the beach with a blond in a bikini.

  44. Rboyle0628 on January 18th, 2010 11:49 pm

Thank god it’s not Bavasi at the helm. He would have been traded to the Twins for Carl Pavano and a happy ending.

  45. lucky on January 18th, 2010 11:49 pm

Unbelievable! My oh my! Can’t wait for the details. So, if Felix is the King, what is Jack Z? The King of Kings?

  46. Boy9988 on January 18th, 2010 11:56 pm

I can pretty much guarantee you its not a two year deal. There is no reason for the M’s to do that since they already have him for the next two years. It would solve nothing at all as far as the M’s are concerned. I would say its probably more like a 4/65 deal than the 5-6yrs people are thinking. If I was Felix that would make the most sense for me as i would then be 27yrs old when looking for my next big contract.

  47. wabbles on January 19th, 2010 12:12 am

And the peasants danced! And the nobles danced! And the farm animals danced! It was one big dance party!
Yeah, I suspect it is something like six years and $92 million. Two years is not long term nor multi-year. Besides just buying his last two arb years is a waste of everyone’s time. Then you have to negotiate another contract to prevent A-Rod-type free agent walkout.
I suspect the negotiations went something like this:
“You don’t need to see my identification.”
“I don’t need to see your identification.”
“These aren’t the droids you’re looking for.”
“These aren’t the droids I’m looking for.”
“You need a six-year $92 million contract and you will be happy.”
    “I need a six-year $92 million contract and I will be happy.”

  52. Faceplant on January 19th, 2010 1:08 am

Well, Churchill seems to think it’s around 6 years total (either six guaranteed years, or some combination of four or five years plus options), and given his connection to Keith Law I’m inclined to believe him. Plus, he nailed the Adam Jones, and Cliff Lee trades.

I’m going to go out tomorrow (later today) in my Zduriencik jersey and spend all day walking through downtown — in case anyone wants to give me a hug :D

I probably woke some people up in my apartment building with my jumping for joy when I saw Dave’s tweet a few minutes ago.

Like Jack said at the meetup, it’s not just him that gets things done, so whoever helped to accomplish this — thank you!

Hey Dave, how long until you think Seattle wakes up to what Jack and his staff have done? (Start buying a lot of tickets…)

So tempted to buy a full season ticket package tomorrow…

My affinity for good wine and good conversation, coupled with several major car repairs, cutbacks at work and the stock market crash haved eroded my financial position the past couple of years. But I might be getting a rather large tax refund and significant book revenues soon. So a 16-game plan might not be out of the question. Cliff Freaking Lee and King Felix signed long term! YES!

The Team Store needs to start selling them. Surely we aren’t the only two that would proudly wear a Z jersey. Especially after today’s news. My jersey is missing the explanation point at the end…

You should have seen the look on my face when I picked it up. It was spelled DZURIENCIK. I pointed it out and 15 minutes later it was fixed. While waiting for it to be fixed, they apologized for the mix-up and I said, “No worries, I’m just happy it wasn’t spelled BAVASI.”

After reading through the comments, thank you for the laughs IwearMsHats and wabbles :D

I think everyone here would happily take what he did last year for the next decade, including whatever regression you prefer.

While I am included in that group, I am certainly not forgetting that Felix has Doc Gooden type talent and could still take another step or two forward. With Jack Z’s patented defenSe behind him, might we see a Pedro circa 1999 type season during this contract?

    Happy Days!
