Game 16, Orioles at Mariners

Millwood vs Hernandez, 7:10 pm.

Happy Felix Day.

It’s a good thing Felix is talented and the Orioles offense is not, because the M’s, they’re not going to score a whole lot of runs tonight. Here’s the line-up, and remember, Millwood is a right-hander.

Ichiro, RF
Figgins, 2B
Gutierrez, CF
Lopez, 2B
Kotchman, 1B
Mascot, DH
Tuiasosopo, LF
Johnson, C
Wilson, SS

That’s six right-handed bats, four of whom could be charitably described as “not very good”. Sweeney plays because, well, he can’t be on the roster and never get in the line-up, right? So now we’re just inserting him into games to make him feel useful, even if he isn’t. Tui plays left because Bradley’s getting the day off to heal the tweaked calf.

There’s a pretty good chance that this is the worst line-up the M’s run out all year. They’ll be lucky to score three runs off Millwood, and given that he has a career 1.99 BB/9 against righties, I wouldn’t expect them to get him out of the game very quickly. To win, they’ll need Felix to be dominant and hope Ichiro and Figgins can scratch out a couple of runs. The Vegas over/under on this game is seven – take the under.

Sweeney saw more than 1 pitch!

    Thank you!

Not to discount his sentiment, but one of those two racers is a husky middle-aged pitcher and one is a sleek, attuned athlete.

Mind you, the sleek attuned athlete is older than the husky middle-aged pitcher.

Iwear–not cool to root against a Mariner player.

I’m not rooting against a mariner player, I’m rooting against the mascot.

Sweeney – how about a nice job as a member of the roundtable. Then we could get one of our lefty left fielders back up here.

I’m marinating the crow overnight so when I read about the first place Mariners in the morning I can have a nice crow omelete. What a homestand!!

Why didn’t somebody tell me to go to the game tonight? A complete game for Felix for the sweep, that’s huge.

Congrats to Rob Johnson, his first ever game catching Felix without a passed-ball.

Hello first place! OK we haven’t really played anyone yet. But, as disco Stu would say, we’re stayin’ alive.

I know they are likely not this bad, but given that we are essentially 1/10 of the way through the season … Baltimore is on pace for 20 wins, finishing more than 90 games out of first place.

Ps- Glen, why are you watching ESPN? Do you know on MLB Network they show you way more highlights without hearing about Ben Rothlisberger, and what TO had for dinner, and where Pacman joins made it rain today? Brian Kenny has bear hair!!

I think Im ready to see a new mascot. How bout a midget like the UW used to have? midget at DH. 5in strike zone, probably get a lot of walks

    Nice game boys. Go M’s.

(Paul B… You seemed to have misunderstood my arguments for Sweeney, which mainly focused on him and Garko competing for a spot, and always included the part that I don’t actually want Sweeney on the roster either– granted, Garko is still hitless in Texas, in the same number of at bats as Sweeney.)

Worst lineup of year and won’t score 3 runs, huh? Performed pretty well seems to me. Mike Sweeney’s situation is really difficult because he has earned the right to go out on his own terms. But the Ms can’t go through year with him not hitting and limiting the team’s substitution options because he cannot play defense. I think it’s time for some critics to get off Tui’s back now. He’s proving he’s a legit major league player.

wouldn’t it be cool if just once, when announcing today’s lineup they said “at designated hugger; Mike Sweeney or Ken Griffey Junior or Mini-Griffey”.
