Game 34, Mariners at Orioles

Hernandez vs Millwood, 9:35 AM.

Happy Felix Day. I hope.

I don’t want to sound melodramatic, but if the Mariners lose this game, we’re going to have to deal with the potential reality that the season might be just about over. Following this match-up, they head to Tampa Bay for three, and realistically, winning one of those games will be an accomplishment with this roster. Bradley apparently won’t return to the team until some point during the next home stand, which means the team is probably looking at another week of makeshift ridiculous Triple-A line-ups.

Meanwhile, Texas just added Derek Holland to their rotation and look like they could be on the verge of running away from the Mariners. They are already 5 1/2 games up, and if the M’s lose this one and can’t overcome Tampa this weekend, they could easily start next week seven or eight games out of first place. At that point, they’d have to play something like .620 baseball the rest of the way to catch Texas. This roster isn’t capable of playing .620 baseball for four months straight.

It’s May 13th, and the Mariners are facing a game that is pretty close to “must win”. Lose today, and we get precipitously close to the point of asking what the team could get for Cliff Lee rather than trying to figure out what bats the team could add to fix the offense. The Mariners need this one. Badly.

Ichiro, RF
Figgins, 2B
Kotchman, 1B
6-4-3, DH
Lopez, 3B
Langerhans, CF
Josh Wilson, SS
Johnson, C
Saunders, LF

I think all the local blogs should go on strike. Just put up the same big black screen – equivalent of wearing black armbands or shrouds or something – and a “R.I.P. 2010 season” banner. Have it up through the weekend. It’d be like Baghead Day, but online.

Then starting Monday, the blogs can all talk about how intrigued we are to see this team get rebuilt and geared up for 2011…

But then, Bo-Mel went and took D-backs to the playoffs a couple of years later…
    Go figure.

Joe Torre sucked as a manager with Mets, Braves and Cardinals. Lou sucked with the Rays. Bad fits between team and manager do not indicate the manager is bad, just the wrong leader for the particular team. It’s a very, very rare manager who can succeed in any conditions.

    That was a rough game.

To say the least, though allow me to tweak that a bit for you:

That was a rough downright stupid game!

It’s still possible to win this thing. The season is NOT finished.

But, oy vey, what a hill to climb all of a sudden.

Don Wakamatsu. Awake and sing, buddy. This is your first real test, right in front of you. These situations are where we find out who the real management timber is in the game. Last year was gimmes, nobody expected anything. How do you respond to this, Wak?

HINT: It’s actually good if you’d go out and ARGUE FOR YOUR TEAM once in awhile!!!! I don’t question your backbone…yet. But I’m willing to bet some are beginning to wonder.

I could sure use a future 40 right about now…

Strangely enough, Torre almost managed to even get the Braves somewhere for a while during their listless 80’s…but, yeah, he never had the kind of success there that he had with the Yanks, of course.

And, speaking of guys in their 80’s (or, almost), who could forget seeing those video clips of poor old Casey Stengel trying to manage the hapless Mets back in the early 1960’s?

Randy Johnson used to throw 170 pitch complete games for Arizona.

RJ was a freak of nature.

Lets Reboot and plan next season!!!!
Trade Lee to the Yankees for Jesus Montero, Arodys Vizcaino and Manny Baneulos!!
Trade Wakamatsu and Mr Z to Kansas for 1B Butler:)….we need a good 1B, heck we need a good new 2B, 3B, SS, C, DH and LF.
    DFA half the team….shit!!

Actually, I might not necessarily mind Z trading for Billy Butler — since that guy seems to hit M’s pitching like a freaking sieve.

Legitamite question. Does a team trading a player away in his last year typically get MORE if the other team takes him on the condition that they sign an extention? Or does this added value to the second team not get leveraged at all?

Based upon the comments here, I guess it wouldn’t be a popular idea to start a Mike Brumley fan page on Facebook.

Well, one could start an “I Hate Mike Brumley” page perhaps.
