I’ve decided that anytime I see a lineup that includes “4. Sweeney, DH”, that’s a great hint that I don’t need to watch the game. As a bonus today, it’s warm and sunny today, so I’ll have fun outdoors with my kids instead of watching ball.

  2. Kid_A on May 14th, 2010 2:53 pm

I’m beginning to wonder if this is all just some cruel joke.

I mean, Wak’s actually convinced that Sweeney’s the best option to bat clean-up against a righty with good stuff? Really?

    Free Langerhans. . .

  3. Jordan on May 14th, 2010 2:54 pm

Let the miracles begin! But seriously Wak, when are we going to ride the hot bats in the top of the order and leave the huggers and mascots out of it?

    The real lineup-
    Ichi
    Figgy
    Saunders
    Guti
    Langerhans
    Josh Wilson
    Lopez
    Kotchman
    AA catcher

  4. Figgy on May 14th, 2010 3:04 pm

EVen though Saunders is killing the ball that’s too much pressure to put on him. I’d put langerhans in the 3 hole before Saunders.

  5. Liam on May 14th, 2010 3:05 pm

    @shannondrayer

Wak on DH we are going with the best match ups that give us the best chance to win. Catchers-must handle the pitchers and catch the baseball

Catchers gotta catch, I love it.

  6. davepaisley on May 14th, 2010 3:06 pm

Catchers-must handle the pitchers and catch the baseball

    Belief System!!!

    or is it:

    Be Leaf, System

(sort of a kung-fu-ish, zen thing)

  7. JMHawkins on May 14th, 2010 3:10 pm

Liam, that quote makes Wak look like he’s delusional. I mean, the words sound right, but they don’t match the actions.

  8. Marinersdude83 on May 14th, 2010 3:12 pm

Welp that lineup sucks. Sweeney hit a homer off of a really crapy kevin millwood and now he is a god, cool!

  9. lalo on May 14th, 2010 3:19 pm

The M´s need a catcher with catcher skills,Call up Bard or Alfonso?? Need a power bat in the DH or first base. If the change no come quickly the playoffs aspirations end. If the change come fast they can win the division without problems in the return of Bedard and Lee, Figgi and Lopez need hit with they life avg, and Kotch remember hit in AAA, the catcher is the most important I think.

    Do you think the same??
    M´S division champions

  10. Harrison on May 14th, 2010 3:25 pm

No Langerhans?! Oh no, but Sweeney’s in there. Puhlease, Wak.

  11. Badbadger on May 14th, 2010 3:27 pm

EVen though Saunders is killing the ball that’s too much pressure to put on him. I’d put langerhans in the 3 hole before Saunders.

There may be something to this, since people who manage and have played the game say this kind of thing. But it seems to me that batting as a professional athelete with millions of fans watching you and preparing to write blog articles about you would be about 99.7% of the pressue, and the position you bat would be about .3%.

  12. henryv on May 14th, 2010 3:32 pm

    This line-up is stupid.

Yuni could have put together a better line-up.

3 right handed in order in the middle of the order, against a RHP? And from 3-8 we have 5 out of 6 righties?

Seriously? Are you even trying, Wak?

  13. joser on May 14th, 2010 3:34 pm

Drayer has more at her blog.

“We’re trying to find one of the guys that is going to step up and be the everyday catcher. We are aware of the amount of passed balls and the things that have affected us. Both have struggled offensively. Right now we are giving both the opportunity to catch.”

I asked if defense was the priority over offense at this position and the skipper said it was.

So, ok — defense is a priority but neither of the “catchers” possess it. So you try one, see appalling results, and say to yourself, “Well, the other one can’t be this bad, right?” So you try the other, see appalling results, and say to yourself, “Well, the other one can’t be this bad, right?” …and lather, rinse, and round it goes.

It’s not quite an endless loop, more like a Drunkard’s Wak, always ending up at the same lamppost… not because that’s where your keys actually are, but that’s the only place with enough light for you to look. Which is why we keep getting the same results.

And the DH thing is a head-scratcher. How does this starting pitcher make Sweeney the best match-up? How does any situation make Sweeney the optimal choice?

  14. henryv on May 14th, 2010 3:34 pm

I think maybe Wak is challenging Fister.

“So you think you’re good, kid? Well, lets see if you can beat one of the best teams in the majors with a horrible line-up and a catcher that can’t hit a 4 year-old’s body weight.”

  15. henryv on May 14th, 2010 3:38 pm

If Moore continues to look confused at the plate, it’s time to get Bard back up. The team has about 2 weeks to save the season, and there is no reason to keep throwing Moore up there to struggle with the bat, and Johnson to not catch… well.. anything.

  16. mlathrop3 on May 14th, 2010 3:44 pm

I wonder if Sweeney is getting a few last starts before he gets DFA’d when Bradley comes back?

But why in the cleanup spot over Langerhans?

  17. Keo on May 14th, 2010 3:51 pm

Langerhans can come in if Moore needs a pinch hitter.

  18. Brzeczyszczykiewicza on May 14th, 2010 3:51 pm

Of course, Sweeney hits a fluke HR so now Wak will guarantee him the cleanup spot for at least a month if not the entire rest of the season. Nevermind that Langerhans has been hitting great and also hit a HR in Baltimore and has just been far more productive all around than Sweeney. We finally found some bats so why won’t Wak use them?

  19. JMHawkins on May 14th, 2010 3:56 pm

But why in the cleanup spot over Langerhans?

Because Wak thinks Sweeney is better than Langerhans.

    Even against a RHP.

  20. henryv on May 14th, 2010 4:03 pm

I wonder if Sweeney is getting a few last starts before he gets DFA’d when Bradley comes back?

That would make sense if he was playing for the Royals. Not for us.

  21. Mike Snow on May 14th, 2010 4:04 pm

So I know batting average is worthless, but when every other guy in your lineup is hitting below .200, it sort of seems logical that your offense won’t be putting together any rallies.

  22. shortbus on May 14th, 2010 4:05 pm

I’m going with mlathrop3′s theory. The “optics” of keeping Griffey out of the lineup right now are terrible. There must be a good reason why Wak is using Sweeney instead. Unless someone has a better theory, I’m betting that Wak is giving Sweeney one last chance to impress before Bradley comes back.

So…wow does that make it hard to root for him to get hits today.

  23. JMHawkins on May 14th, 2010 4:14 pm

Should I get my hopes up?

  24. Swungonandbelted on May 14th, 2010 4:14 pm

Runs in the first inning??? Is it snowing in Florida?

  30. mlathrop3 on May 14th, 2010 4:17 pm

My man crush on Guti may have a chance to turn into something more XOXO

  31. MarinerFanMike03 on May 14th, 2010 4:18 pm

So 643 is showing he can still bat, sort of.

  32. djw on May 14th, 2010 4:21 pm

Aaand Lopez draws a walk. Where am I?

  33. AssumedName on May 14th, 2010 4:21 pm

Ah, Wootierrez, we could’ve used you yesterday.

  34. Swungonandbelted on May 14th, 2010 4:22 pm

    Grand theft third base… 6-4-3

  35. JMHawkins on May 14th, 2010 4:22 pm

    Is it snowing in Florida?

    Frogs falling from the sky?

  36. spankystout on May 14th, 2010 4:22 pm

Lopez takes a walk! Sweeney stealing?!?! Hell has frozen over.

  37. JerBear on May 14th, 2010 4:22 pm

Good lord almighty… Sweeney stealing third! Now I’ve seen it all.

  38. djw on May 14th, 2010 4:22 pm

I guess the reason Mike Sweeney doesn’t usually steal third is he’s never actually made it to 2nd base before. Who knew?

  39. AssumedName on May 14th, 2010 4:23 pm

wait…what? Sweeny swipes 3rd? I’m gonna have to go home early and check that out.

  40. Utis on May 14th, 2010 4:23 pm

    Sweeney with a stolen base???

  41. mlathrop3 on May 14th, 2010 4:23 pm

Do we have to transfer the 6-4-3 title now?

  42. G-Man on May 14th, 2010 4:24 pm

643 was out in the pickoff at first, as I saw it. He figures he’s playing with house money, stealing third.

But the DP ends the inning.

  43. roulf on May 14th, 2010 4:24 pm

    1-4-3, actually.

  44. henryv on May 14th, 2010 4:24 pm

Something is wrong with my computer… it says “M. Sweeney stole third “

  45. MBK on May 14th, 2010 4:25 pm

Darn, Sweeney with a hit and stolen base, how dare he help the team. He’s supposed to be bad so we can bitch about the team not cutting him!

    /sarc

  46. Marinersdude83 on May 14th, 2010 4:25 pm

Whoa I thought we were a major league team there for a second…. Thanks for bringing us back to reality Kotchman.

  47. MarinerFanMike03 on May 14th, 2010 4:27 pm

//sigh// Thanks Kotchman, you just ruined my 1st inning.

  48. henryv on May 14th, 2010 4:28 pm

And now for Fister to bore the Rays into a shutout.

  49. Marinersdude83 on May 14th, 2010 4:31 pm

First stolen base since aug. 2006! Nice job Sweeney. You just made me pee my pants.

  50. henryv on May 14th, 2010 4:33 pm

Will the M’s score again? I’m going to go with no, but you never know.

  51. srp on May 14th, 2010 4:36 pm

and in other AL West news, Harden’s given up 5 walks in the first inning against Toronto.

  52. seahopp on May 14th, 2010 4:37 pm

I love how Niehaus keeps ripping on Tropicana every time FSN comes back from a break.

  53. JMHawkins on May 14th, 2010 4:38 pm

Nice. Is this like a baseball version of Freaky Friday, where people switch bodies?

  54. spankystout on May 14th, 2010 4:39 pm

Opposite field 2B by Moore. It was a nice AB to see from him.

  55. mrt1212 on May 14th, 2010 4:39 pm

Adam Moore get’s a double and works the at bat? Who are these bizarro Mariners?

  56. MBK on May 14th, 2010 4:40 pm

    Bring Moore home, Saunders!

  57. Liam on May 14th, 2010 4:40 pm

The Rays have a shift on for Saunders, what’s that all about?

  58. MBK on May 14th, 2010 4:42 pm

I have a bet with a guy at work. If the M’s lose this series I have to bring in breakfast for the whole group. I’m going to enjoy that breakfast on Monday when he pays for it.(please) :)

  59. joser on May 14th, 2010 4:44 pm

    Is it snowing in Florida?

Possibly. No way to tell, what with the dome and all.

  60. joser on May 14th, 2010 4:47 pm

    Speaking of which….

I love how Niehaus keeps ripping on Tropicana every time FSN comes back from a break.

It probably gives him Kingdome flashbacks. Considering the number of hours he had to spend in that hulk, I can’t blame him for having a grudge against anything similar.

You know, the Rays’ plan for a downtown waterfront stadium (with an open-edged fabric roof to keep off the worst of the sun and rain) is beautiful. If they ever find the money to get it built, it won’t be as nice as the artist’s conceptions, but it still would be a lovely place to see a game.

  63. jdink on May 14th, 2010 5:03 pm

  65. mlathrop3 on May 14th, 2010 5:05 pm

    WTF was that?

  66. JerBear on May 14th, 2010 5:07 pm

Almost looked like Fister just caught his toe and kind of tripped there… I don’t know what happened. But Brignac would have scored anyway on the groundout by Bartlett, so it’s not that big of deal. At least he kept his composure and got a groundball and a strike out.

  67. mrt1212 on May 14th, 2010 5:08 pm

No F’ing way that just happened.

I’d love to see a stat on how many times per season someone balks in a run.

  87. marinerblue on May 14th, 2010 5:39 pm

Nice HR Moore. That’s it – you win the job. Cut RJ or only let him catch King Felix. We’re on pace to have the worst Catching platoon in the history of baseball – gotta pick one and go with it. I’d rather have Moore than Johnson.

  88. Axtell on May 14th, 2010 5:39 pm

Gotta say I love the pace Fister works at…nothing more menacing for a lineup than a guy who works at a fast pace and just pounds the strike zone. He may not miss a lot of bats, but he’s been really succcessful this year inducing tons of ground ball outs.

  89. JH on May 14th, 2010 5:40 pm

Omar Vizquel is DHing for the White Sox today. At least for one day, there is a team in baseball with less hope for production out of the DH spot than the Mariners.

  90. CYK on May 14th, 2010 5:41 pm

the Mariner catching tandem has been a complete embarrassment this year. Maybe Moore is finally over the jitters. I don’t need to see RJ back behind the plate anytime soon .

So Adam Moore is getting good wood on the ball, could this be a positive sign? A turning point?

    Wouldn’t that be great?

Adam Moore hitting could be a turning point, considering he can also “catch the ball”, something that Rob Johnson hasn’t quite picked up.

If Kotchman doesn’t go for that ball, Crawford’s probably out.

  128. mshope on May 14th, 2010 6:47 pm

aaaaannnnd . . . 1 run ballgame. Good thing we got that run last inn!

  129. lalo on May 14th, 2010 6:47 pm

    Shawn Kelley sucks WTF!!!!!!!!

  130. Marinersdude83 on May 14th, 2010 6:47 pm

    And here come the Rays….

  131. roulf on May 14th, 2010 6:48 pm

I’m starting to hate the 8th inning.

  132. mshope on May 14th, 2010 6:48 pm

he’s always struggled with his control. Who else would you have sent out there for the 8th?

  133. mshope on May 14th, 2010 6:49 pm

    roulf,

    couldn’t agree with you more!

  134. lalo on May 14th, 2010 6:49 pm

Shawn Kelley its a bastard, the game could be lose

  135. lalo on May 14th, 2010 6:50 pm

    The dammed 8 inning

  136. Lauren, token chick on May 14th, 2010 6:50 pm

Can’t decide what’s worse, our eighth innings lately or lalo’s insights.

  137. ABP52380 on May 14th, 2010 6:51 pm

There have been waaay to many ‘painful’ games this year – just been brutal the last 2 weeks. You’re right, the 8th and 9th have just been disgusting.

  138. mshope on May 14th, 2010 6:51 pm

Wheew! Hooray for 2 SOs. Go M’s!

  139. lalo on May 14th, 2010 6:52 pm

Aardsma is dammed in the Fister´s games, sean white saves the game

  140. spankystout on May 14th, 2010 6:54 pm

Those sliders Kelley threw Upton were nasty. Hopefully old Kelley is back.

  141. Flowin on May 14th, 2010 6:54 pm

The last three games that Fister has been in he has had three leads.

DA came into all three games.

DA blew the lead in all three games.

DA picked up the loss in all three games.

Should be an easy 9th inning…

  142. henryv on May 14th, 2010 6:55 pm

    Nice bunt, doofus.

  143. naviomelo on May 14th, 2010 6:56 pm

Can’t decide what’s worse, our eighth innings lately or lalo’s insights.

The latter, categorically. We dealt with losing just fine a few years ago.

  144. henryv on May 14th, 2010 6:57 pm

Did Tampa remove all seats and just put in dinner tables?

    Cause that would be awesome.

  145. henryv on May 14th, 2010 6:58 pm

Choadte has thrown 4 pitches that the catcher couldn’t get to this inning. Don’t steal, just wait.

  146. seahopp on May 14th, 2010 6:59 pm

    Nice call ump

  147. JerBear on May 14th, 2010 6:59 pm

    I’m sick of umps.

  148. henryv on May 14th, 2010 7:00 pm

That, Mr. Figgins, is what we call the Pacific northwest strike zone. You’re playing for Seattle, now. Just wait till you see how big it is in New York.

  149. seahopp on May 14th, 2010 7:03 pm

I’d like to see the fx tracker on that pitch

  150. King.Dome on May 14th, 2010 7:04 pm

Seriously, where was that pitch? That’s messed up.

  151. badperson_ny on May 14th, 2010 7:04 pm

will it be aardsma coming up?

  152. juneau_fan on May 14th, 2010 7:05 pm

I don’t know if my blood pressure can take DA in the ninth of a close game with a good team.

  153. seahopp on May 14th, 2010 7:07 pm

at least the ump is calling it both ways

  154. henryv on May 14th, 2010 7:07 pm

    Wow.

Aardsma got a generous strike call there.

  155. lalo on May 14th, 2010 7:08 pm

    Aardsma with a good outing

  156. MarinerFanMike03 on May 14th, 2010 7:08 pm

    @Seahopp & King.Dome, I looked at the pitchfx, it was there. //sigh//

  157. henryv on May 14th, 2010 7:09 pm

Oh god, was the Jack Wilson shaking Mike Sweeney’s hand? If the M’s lose, I’m blaming them.

  158. badperson_ny on May 14th, 2010 7:09 pm

I live in NY and can’t figure out why the game is blacked out by mlbtv…a game in Tampa? total rip off…I’m listening to the radio feed.

  159. seahopp on May 14th, 2010 7:10 pm

Thank god, we needed that badly!

  160. MarinerFanMike03 on May 14th, 2010 7:10 pm

BLAMO! DA strikes him out. This was a well fought game!

  161. scott19 on May 14th, 2010 7:10 pm

    Wow…Double-A with a 1-2-3 ninth…yowsah!!

  162. Glen on May 14th, 2010 7:10 pm

Sweeneys back looks like it is starting to act up on him as he was running out after the last SO.

  163. juneau_fan on May 14th, 2010 7:11 pm

Okay, I’ll watch this game in replay.

  164. roulf on May 14th, 2010 7:12 pm

@badperson_ny, if its blacked out and shouldn’t be, you can give them a call to try and sort it out. You may need to provide a CC to prove you live in NY, but they should be able to fix it. (Unless for some reason it is supposed to be blacked out, but that would be pretty lame)

  165. Idaho M on May 14th, 2010 7:12 pm

Sweeney with back to back games with homers! New whipping boy needed.

  166. seahopp on May 14th, 2010 7:12 pm

    What is Sweeney talking about????

  167. henryv on May 14th, 2010 7:12 pm

I live in NY and can’t figure out why the game is blacked out by mlbtv…a game in Tampa? total rip off…I’m listening to the radio feed.

Gives you an idea of just how much power George Steinbrenner has.

  168. Carson on May 14th, 2010 7:12 pm

Oh, good. Mike Sweeney with the sappy Junior love in the post game interview.

  169. JerBear on May 14th, 2010 7:12 pm

I’m sure Sweeney is a super nice guy, but this lap-dog act he’s been pulling for Jr. is almost embarrassing…

  170. Coolalvin206 on May 14th, 2010 7:13 pm

That’s baseball for ya .. lose against the worst team one night …beat the best the next.

  171. henryv on May 14th, 2010 7:13 pm

OMG, I just saw Sweeney’s slide.

    That is AWESOME.

  172. JTP224 on May 14th, 2010 7:14 pm

Please tell me someone else heard Sweeney’s post game interview. He was asked something like where his hitting came from today and he said, “From Junior.” Huh?

  173. Lauren, token chick on May 14th, 2010 7:14 pm

Now I feel guilty, since lalo’s fallen silent. Please chime in, lalo, I just can’t deal with the “this happened, therefore that player sucks” and “this happened, therefore the hitting coach is the best” rationales.

  174. juneau_fan on May 14th, 2010 7:14 pm

Oh, good. Mike Sweeney with the sappy Junior love in the post game interview.

I had to change the channel.

  175. seahopp on May 14th, 2010 7:14 pm

Maybe its a strategy to make fans not feel bad when, if he keeps playing at this level for the rest of the series, he is the reason that Junior leaves.

  176. IwearMsHats on May 14th, 2010 7:16 pm

Does anyone think he’s being sappy for a reason? Either Junior retiring soon or being released? If so, he very well should be sappy. Junior may be too old to produce, but he’s still a legend and paramount in making this franchise what it is today.

  177. JMHawkins on May 14th, 2010 7:16 pm

That’s baseball for ya .. lose against the worst team one night …beat the best the next

You mean the Rays are going to beat themselves tommorrow night?

  178. Utis on May 14th, 2010 7:18 pm

If that’s what it takes for Sweeney to get motivated, I am not going to argue.

Would you complain if Jr were to retire and the Mariners dedicated a winning season to him?

  179. scott19 on May 14th, 2010 7:23 pm

Gives you an idea of just how much power George Steinbrenner has.

I was thinking that, too. Can’t let anybody else within earshot of NYC enjoy their team when The Greatest Sports Franchise In The Universe is playing — even if they’re paying for an mlb.tv subscription to get it.

  180. msb on May 14th, 2010 7:39 pm

Well, there is miracle number one.

  181. Koala on May 14th, 2010 7:40 pm

Wow, Adam Moore and Sweeney with homers. It must be raining frogs.

  182. MBK on May 14th, 2010 7:43 pm

“Is that the kind of production you want from a DH?”

    Yes, please.

  183. MarinerFanMike03 on May 14th, 2010 7:48 pm

“Is that the kind of production you want from a DH?”

    Yes, please.

To further that statement, yes you want your DH to actually PRODUCE!!.

  184. mrt1212 on May 14th, 2010 8:21 pm

I love a win as much as the next person but cmon, lets not get on the Sweeney for MVP bandwagon just yet.

  185. MBK on May 14th, 2010 9:05 pm

I love a win as much as the next person but cmon, lets not get on the Sweeney for MVP bandwagon just yet.

Nobody is calling him MVP, but maybe some of the people who cry when Sweeney gets a hit will get off his back some.
