Game 43, Padres at Mariners

Richard vs Snell, 7:10 pm.

Ian Snell makes his triumphant return to the rotation by default, as he wasn’t as bad as Ryan Roland-Smith. He’ll try to shut down the Padres tonight, but unless he’s figured out how to to get lefties out in the last few weeks, I’d imagine Adrian Gonzalez will have all kinds of fun this evening.

Richard is a righty, by the way, but Saunders is not in the line-up. His small sample size power display is not as shiny and new as Sweeney’s small sample size power display. Defense, schmefense. We are slaves to the hot hand. I’m a moron.

Ichiro, RF
Figgins, 2B
Gutierrez, CF
6-4-3, DH
Lopez, 2B
Bradley, LF
Kotchman, 1B
Bard, C
Josh WIlson, SS

That was b-s… That fourth pitch was 8 inches outside. Bradley got screwed.

Damn you, home plate ump. Bases loaded, 1 out.

    Fracken robbed by the ump.

“Two outs and it’s up to Casey Kotchman.”

Words you never want to hear.

Nice at bat, Bradley. Too bad you’re washed up.

  13. MarinerFanMike03 on May 22nd, 2010 9:41 pm

Thanks for nothing Kotchman, you jackass.

  14. MrZDevotee on May 22nd, 2010 9:41 pm

Yes, we didn’t score the run. But I sure like seeing some life back in these guys. It actually felt like we had a chance in the 9th inning for 3 straight games– that’s progress.

Get ’em next time, Milton. But I like the new Bradley not getting tossed there in a key situation. His yoga is working.

  15. MarinerFanMike03 on May 22nd, 2010 9:42 pm

What the hell are you talking about? The ump ruined that at bat by calling a strike 8″ off the plate.

Dave, I respect the hell out of anyone who admits when they make a mistake, especially when they do so in self deprecating humor. That helps make this site amazing

I hope this makes the fire in their belly burn even more.

  18. flashbeak on May 22nd, 2010 9:45 pm

Kotchman really shouldn’t be in the major leagues. If you’re going to be a first baseman, you have to hit. He doesn’t hit.

  19. henryv on May 22nd, 2010 9:46 pm

Back to the regular old M’s.

1 run on 9 fucking hits. NINE hits, and one damned run.

  20. henryv on May 22nd, 2010 9:47 pm

What the hell are you talking about? The ump ruined that at bat by calling a strike 8? off the plate.

He got one bad call. Umps in MLB are going to make at least 1 bad ball or strike call per at bat.

And then he wasn’t even close to catching up with either of those pitches. Not even close.

  21. henryv on May 22nd, 2010 9:48 pm

Not only that, he’s Milton Bradley. He has been a giant prick for a decade. It is his only constant skill. He’s not going to get a fair strike zone.

Can we have a Wakamatsu is an idiot post Dave? Please? It’s about time. We have 2 runners on and no outs. Gutierrez up. We could bunt and have runners on second and third one out, but no. Wak doesn’t think about that. He thinks about the clutch hit, and it doesn’t occur to him to thik “my offense is the worst in baseball and Guti already has one hit today. So, odds are against him that he’d get another hit right here and give us the big inning. I should play it safe and make it almost impossible for my offense not to score a run with runners at second and third without the possiblility of another double play to screw us.” No. Wak thinks big inning and Guti grounds into a double play. From there on the M’s don’t do shit till the ninth. It’s making me so fucking frustrated to see our retarted manager make the dumbest decisions and blow our games. I don’t know how much more I can take. I’m sitting there yelling at my television, and that’s the only satisfaction I’m getting out of the whole game. It’s pathetic, and we need change.

    Miltion Bradley Career Stats:
    BA- .276 SLG- .448 OPS- .818

    Chone Figgins Career:
    BA-.287 SLG- .383 OPS- .743

    Ichrio! Career Stats:
    BA- .333 SLG- .434 OPS- .812

Yes Milton Bradley is nothing but a washed up prick with no baseball skill.

  26. JMHawkins on May 22nd, 2010 10:02 pm

We could bunt and have runners on second and third one out, but no.

I’m as a big a Wak basher as anyone, but he made the right call. Bunting in that situation with Guti would have been stupid. Sacrifice bunts are usually bad ideas, you should read up on Run Expectancy values.

…it doesn’t occur to him to thik “my offense is the worst in baseball and Guti already has one hit today. So, odds are against him that he’d get another hit right here and…

You don’t know anything about probability, do you?

Yeah I have read that. The fact still remains that we had no outs and this year the M’s have created a habit of getting runners in scoring position with no outs and not scoring. And, every time they don’t score, a bunt isn’t incorporated (Except for Ichiro’s missed bunt today)so why not switch it up. We knew it was going to be a close game, so why not play for one run? I stand by what I said, the bunt was the obvious call and it didn’t get called.

  28. Jack Howland on May 22nd, 2010 10:13 pm

Sims you’re an idiot – I couldn’t see the runner, but it was Kotchman’s fault for throwing home if the runner was really in “no man’s land”, not Bard’s. Kotch has to run toward the runner if he’s in the middle and make him commit to a base.

Sims was way off-base on this call. It was bad enough that he even mentioned it, but he really went off on Bard about it. He should stick to topics he knows – like rally fries.

This folks is how parody is done on the internets. If you’re too subtle with it people will miss the point, so you have to go over the top and take it beyond the bounds of absurdity. I used italics on the tells, without those it would have just come across as an ignorant rant, but those two statements clearly labeled it as parody:

Can we have a Wakamatsu is an idiot post Dave? Please? It’s about time. We have 2 runners on and no outs. Gutierrez up. We could bunt and have runners on second and third one out, but no. So I yet again rue the amazing offensive output of our team. big

    Jose Lopez’s recent games:

    1-4, 10 pitches seen
    0-5, 15 pitches seen
    1-3, BB, 16 pitches seen
    0-4, 12 pitches seen
    1-5, 15 pitches seen
    2-4, 11 pitches seen
    1-4, 13 pitches seen

At what point do the coaches realize this guy just isn’t going to ever get it?

  35. TomTuttle on May 22nd, 2010 11:19 pm

The M’s offense should be more like the WSU offense.

On Friday the Cougs scored 20 runs and on Saturday the total was 18 against the USC Trojans.

Pings or no pings, pretty damn impressive.

    Go Cougs.

I think they realize it. They’re just trying to make do until they have better options.

(edit: though since he bats in the middle of the lineup, maybe they don’t get it)

  37. dingla on May 23rd, 2010 1:41 am

    baseball is a weird activity

  38. dingla on May 23rd, 2010 1:44 am

anyone ever seen a team pull off a squeeze to tie a game?

  39. dingla on May 23rd, 2010 1:51 am

How hard did Bradley try to not break his bat after striking out in the 9th? Watch it, if u havnt seen. If hes going through anger management, he showed great improvement there.

Is this implying that Wak enjoys the ladies?

Great news: The M’s have outscored their opponents 16-10 the last two games. The Pythag. for that has to be 2-0. Whoo hoo!

  43. bongo on May 23rd, 2010 6:33 am

The Mariners offense doesn’t deserve all the blame for this one. How many games have we lost so far this season due to bad base running and passed balls? To wit:

    a. If Ichiro hadn’t been picked off in the first inning, he would have subsequently scored on Gutierrez’s single.

    b. The wild pitch from Texeira that allowed Headley to score in the 6th looked like it should have been blockable by Bard.

Baeerunning is part of the offense. You cannot assume that everything else happens the same, just eliminating the one thing you don’t like. And the defense and pitching will on occasion make mistakes; two runs in a game is not an unreasonable amount; it’s actually really good. If you can’t score a runner from third in the ninth with one out and Milton Bradley at the plate, don’t blame something else in the game.

In other news (per Ms. Drayer), Jack is having moderate to severe problems…

    That makes me sad.
