Game 54, Angels at Mariners

Dave · June 4, 2010 at 4:23 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Saunders vs Snell, 7:10 pm.

What a horrific pitching match-up – veritable FanGraphs contributor Carson Cistulli created the NERD formula to try to quantify just how “watchable” a pitcher is, and Snell and Saunders both rate a 0 out of 10. Yech.

In newsy stuff, Ryan Rowland-Smith will start in place of Doug Fister tomorrow, who is suffering from “dead arm”. His velocity was down in his last start, and it looks like he needs some rest.

Somewhat interesting choice with the line-up tonight. Against a lefty, Sweeney is not playing – Langerhans is in left, Bradley is at DH, and Tui is playing first. I’d imagine we’ll hear something about his back being tight or something. Slump or not, hard to imagine Wak choosing Langerhans over Sweeney against a lefty.

Ichiro, RF
Figgins, 2B
Gutierrez, CF
Lopez, 3B
Bradley, DH
Josh Wilson, SS
Tuiasosopo, 1B
Alfonzo, C
Langerhans, LF

What is the reasoning on putting langerhans at the bottom? is he really the worst hitter of the bunch?

I have tickets to the game tomorrow and I’m torn between being excited or pissed that hyphen is starting instead of Fister. For some reason, I keep choosing games that avoid Felix and Lee this season.

    I’ll see you there! :) or :(

  4. notoriousnic79 on June 4th, 2010 4:54 pm

Too funny. Is anyone else really excited about Alfonzo as our catcher? The guy is on a tear right now and should be considered for the starting gig. I know it takes awhile to get the rapport down with the pitchers, but its not like Rob Johnson is our best option.

  5. Rick Banjo on June 4th, 2010 4:55 pm

    On the lineup:

I’m wondering whether it’s not a better idea to espouse some consistency so the players have some idea what their role is.

From what I gather from tonight’s lineup, these are the roles (for tonight):

Ichiro, RF: “I’m just here to bat .350 and throw people out at 3B”

Figgins, 2B: “I like being on base.”

Gutierrez, CF: “Death to flying things. I live here.”

Lopez, 3B: “Huh, coach?! Batting 4th?! YAYYYY! ::drool::”

Bradley, DH: “Who is this bag’o'donuts hitting cleanup?! ::inner peace::”

Josh Wilson, SS: “Here’s your morning paper, sir.”

Tuiasosopo, 1B: “I’m just happy to be here, hope I can help the ballclub.”

Alfonzo, C: “I can bat 100 points higher than RoJo. That’s right. .218.”

Langerhans, LF: “I’m playing tonight? Huh?!”

  6. EthanN on June 4th, 2010 5:00 pm

Why does Saunders get punished for playing well?

Maybe Tui will give us a good game for a change…but I’m not holding my breath.

  7. Diehard on June 4th, 2010 5:04 pm

Hmmm interesting lineup without Sweeney. I am glad to see Langerhans finally get back out there, hope his elbow is okay and he’s ready to go.
Good thing Saunders sucks but too bad Snell sucks too. Could be a high scoring game like last Sunday’s game.

  8. spankystout on June 4th, 2010 5:05 pm

Ugh. Wak is baffling this year. Langerhans should be at 1B and Saunders in LF. Its not like Joe Saunders is a dominant LHP………it won’t suprise me if Sweeney has a ‘sore back’ again. Just play Sweeney 3 or 4 days in a row, and he can’t rebound. I still would prefer Branyan’s back problem over Sweeney’s back problem.

  9. Paul B on June 4th, 2010 5:26 pm

What is the reasoning on putting langerhans at the bottom? is he really the worst hitter of the bunch?

    Against a LHP? Probably.

Is anyone else really excited about Alfonzo as our catcher?

I’ve been away, for those of you that have seen him play, what do you think?

I sort of think any replacement level catcher would look good after watching RJ catch.

  10. Marinersdude83 on June 4th, 2010 5:30 pm

After seeing Felix pitch last night I’m so not excited about Ian Snell tonight. Tui at 1B blah. Hope J Lo can keep that bat going agian tonight.

  11. EthanN on June 4th, 2010 5:36 pm

So I say this year we use a draft pick on Micah Gibbs, a switch-hitting catcher out of LSU. He is hitting .392 with 9 HR and 7 SB. Not only that, but he is incredible behind the plate. Made the All-SEC defensive team this season.

  12. somepants on June 4th, 2010 5:38 pm

I’m also exited/concerned about tomorrow’s game. I hope RRS does well as he is due a good game but since I’ll be toting my 3 year old daughter with me, I expect to spend more time following the moose around than watching the action.

  13. Hammy57 on June 4th, 2010 5:39 pm

I wouldn’t care if we used our draft pick on a tee ball catcher. Anything is better than Rob Johnson.

  14. Harrison on June 4th, 2010 5:43 pm

I’d much rather see Garrett Olson start tomorrow night instead of Ryan Rowland-Smith. He’s on a pitch count of 85-90, but he’ll be lucky to pitch more than 40. I’m pullin for the guy like everyone else, but if I had tickets to tomorrow’s affair, I’d seriously be looking to trade them for Sunday’s game.

I agree spankystout — Langerhans should be at 1B and Saunders in LF with Bradley at DH. Tui does not need another start. This is getting a bit tiresome, if not circular.

  15. Grayfox3d on June 4th, 2010 5:43 pm

I just hope we can pull out a win today… no more late inning meltdowns please!!! Texas is losing, Oak is playin the twins, things are looking decent for this division comeback.

  16. CarpCarter on June 4th, 2010 5:48 pm

Jesus Christ, go away Tui. Mariners need to acquire a 1B so this nonsense of a Kotchman/Tui platoon-from-hell can be put to an end already.

Bad news about RRS replacing The Fist tomorrow. With Snell liable to get blown up as usual tonight, it would have been nice for Fister and Vargas to at least give us a chance to win the series. Now that RRS is in his place to allow seven earned over five, doesn’t look too great.

Glad to see Wilson climb up in the order as he continues to hit well. What’s the ETA on the other Wilson’s return? Not really missing him that much while Paperboy continues to rip it at the plate and play the field capably.

  17. Refuse2Lose20666 on June 4th, 2010 5:59 pm

Yah the Tui/Kotchman platoon is awful. Do they have to bat under 100 to get released or what? I much rather see Langerhans there or even Sween Dog.

  18. Westside guy on June 4th, 2010 6:13 pm

Alfonzo sure looks like Lopez 2.0 at the plate, at least to my eye… but I do prefer him to Johnson.

I’m a bit disgusted with how old school Wak’s management style is though. Saunders gets platooned because he’s a lefty without getting a real chance to earn his spot. Sweeney doesn’t get platooned cuz he’s a Proven Veteran – if he’s not hurt he’s Always in the lineup. Tui is Wak’s WFB 2.0. RoJo is liked by the pitchers so nothing else matters. Etc…

  19. Diehard on June 4th, 2010 6:24 pm

Jesus Christ, go away Tui. Mariners need to acquire a 1B so this nonsense of a Kotchman/Tui platoon-from-hell can be put to an end already.

Bring back the Muscle!!! I miss Branyan a ton!
Heck bring in Scott or Laroche and use Kotchman as a backup since his glove is awesome.

Wak must be hoping Tui will hit one of his occasional HR’s to justify leaving him up here.

  20. Diehard on June 4th, 2010 6:26 pm

Alfonzo sure looks like Lopez 2.0 at the plate, at least to my eye… but I do prefer him to Johnson.

Seriously anything is better than Robo Rob, the Lord of passed balls and terrible AB’s.
Good news is that Bard should be back soon!

  21. diderot on June 4th, 2010 6:27 pm

Has anyone else noticed we don’t have very many good hitters?

  22. pgreyy on June 4th, 2010 6:41 pm

Heard Z on Calabro today…and he said that Jack Wilson would start in Tacoma on Sunday…and when Jack’s ready to come up, he’ll come up.

Calabro thought Jack looked a little stiff walking off the field, but Z said that Jack looked good fielding ground balls earlier.

When asked what they’d do when Jack Wilson was ready, Z certainly didn’t sound like he felt that Josh had earned the starting job…so, expect some teeth gnashing when Jack replaces Josh and then doesn’t hit.

  23. Westside guy on June 4th, 2010 6:42 pm

Has anyone else noticed we don’t have very many good hitters?

WOAH. You’re right… Why haven’t I picked up on that before?

  24. Grayfox3d on June 4th, 2010 6:47 pm

Of course Z is gonna want Jack back out there, he’s the one that made the big deal about him, making that trade and signing him for two years… cant let the fans know that he got the shaft with an injured player who cant hit..

  25. Westside guy on June 4th, 2010 7:15 pm

On the bright side – Jack coming up hopefully means Tui goes back down.

You never know, though. It wouldn’t shock me to see Saunders or Langerhans go back down, unfortunately.

  26. Diehard on June 4th, 2010 7:19 pm

I don’t see why everyone views the Snell/Wilson trade with the Pirates as such a huge deal. They gave up Clement and Ronny Cedeno and some low level guys that aren’t going to be anything. Jack Wilson can’t stay healthy but at least the paperboy is bringing it on a consistent basis.

  27. lalo on June 4th, 2010 7:19 pm

What about trade Jack or Josh and one or two prospects for another hitter as luke scott??

  28. fiftyone on June 4th, 2010 7:19 pm

So I’m well aware Ropb Johnson is not in the lineup as of this moment, but now that Cliff F. Lee also has hired him as his personal catcher, the time seems right to float another nickname for him. Out of respect and love, of course.

    How’s “The Resiever?”

  29. Grayfox3d on June 4th, 2010 7:23 pm

what…no bunt no steal no nothing? still trying to raise his .210 average… wow great call there wak… quickly two down.. again..

  32. kuptain on June 4th, 2010 7:28 pm

what…no bunt no steal no nothing? still trying to raise his .210 average… wow great call there wak…

Figgins is hitting over .300 right-handed… I don’t blame Wak for letting him hit.

  33. Diehard on June 4th, 2010 7:34 pm

    ugh what a terrible pitch.

  34. Des71 on June 4th, 2010 7:48 pm

    Fonzie!

  35. Grayfox3d on June 4th, 2010 7:51 pm

I wouldnt be so mad about striking out if he would of at least swung at that pitch, it looked like he closed his eyes… damnit…

  36. Diehard on June 4th, 2010 7:51 pm

Nothing Langerhans could do there….What a pitch.

  37. Gomez on June 4th, 2010 7:51 pm

What is the reasoning on putting langerhans at the bottom? is he really the worst hitter of the bunch?

Something something lefty vs lefty something something. Funny thing is that Langerhans over his career doesn’t have much of a platoon split. He can hit lefties fine, so Wak wouldn’t be far out of line playing him vs LHPs.

  38. Diehard on June 4th, 2010 7:52 pm

Langerhans was looking for a fastball.

  39. lalo on June 4th, 2010 8:07 pm

Call up Luke French, Snell is terrible!!

  40. justcruisn on June 4th, 2010 8:15 pm

So how much longer does the Ian Snell experiment continue? Another overpaid non-producer. Sad.

  41. colejs on June 4th, 2010 8:16 pm

    Double play machine!

  42. lalo on June 4th, 2010 8:16 pm

    Again Figgins…..

  43. absolutsyd on June 4th, 2010 8:16 pm

OK, can we all direct our energy at getting Figgens at least dropped in the order?

  44. colejs on June 4th, 2010 8:16 pm

There should be a double play derby, then we could win something.

  45. justcruisn on June 4th, 2010 8:25 pm

Should be an interesting series with the M’s featuring Ian “a walk an inning” Snell and Ryan Rowland-”oh and two groove one”-Smith.

  46. lalo on June 4th, 2010 8:25 pm

Only 3 hits, but 3 BB and a HR,

Ian Snell is a terrible pitcher, any of Tacoma is better, Call up French??

  47. kyoko on June 4th, 2010 8:35 pm

Has Snell missed a bat all night? He looks so hittable.

Another swell Snell line: 4 BB, 0 SO.

  58. Wallingfjord on June 4th, 2010 9:33 pm

Not many comments tonight. Are people skipping the Snell/Saunders duel, or is there just not much to say about it so far? Both are plausible…

  59. peteybee on June 4th, 2010 9:35 pm

Just when you thought the SUB-MARINERS might surface and put together a streak worth getting excited about they go and pull the same old shit….they were about to break the surface and come up for a little fresh air and sunshine but it looks like it’s down periscope for now folks….

  60. IwearMsHats on June 4th, 2010 9:39 pm

Modern Warfare 2 is much more interesting than this game.

  61. jeffcor13 on June 4th, 2010 9:44 pm

I hate to complain about the announcers, but I am sooo tired of Dave Sims constantly saying “The Angels are on a role! They have won 7 out of 10 games!”…Its like he has no memory that they have played the mariners, that we suck awful….its like they just rolled in from NY and Tampa Bay sweeping them both. He always says that.
Also, what are the options for free agents at catcher and first base for next year? I guess I would rather put my eggs in that basket than give something valuable away for crap this year.

  62. peteybee on June 4th, 2010 9:45 pm

ps: CAUTION: SUBMARINERS ARE RIDING THE PINK TORPEDO IN THE BULLPEN…..DIVE DIVE DIVE!!!

  63. SODOMOJO360 on June 4th, 2010 9:45 pm

Call up Luke French, Snell is terrible!!

Yes. Should have done that a long time ago for Hyphen!

  64. Westside guy on June 4th, 2010 9:59 pm

Not many comments tonight. Are people skipping the Snell/Saunders duel, or is there just not much to say about it so far? Both are plausible…

That first one, for me at least.

Something about this season has been really draining. I don’t usually mind following a losing team – heck, I’m a very long-time Mariners fan so I’m very used to it! But with (what appear to me to be) constant, repetitive indefensible management and roster decisions, combined with the unfortunate bad starts from most of those few players with legitimate upsides… right now I’ve simply got little tolerance for those games where I see little hope. Unlike in past years, at this point in time I find myself quickly tuning out of these sorts of games most of the time.

That probably reads like yet another whiny complaint, but I didn’t mean it to be. It’s just a long-winded explanation from this individual regarding why I’m an ephemeral fan right now.

  65. JMHawkins on June 4th, 2010 10:44 pm

So I’m well aware Rob Johnson is not in the lineup as of this moment, but…the time seems right to float another nickname for him. Out of respect and love, of course.

    How’s “The Resiever?”

That’s good, but I like “The Sculpture” myself. It highlights his footwork, and also commemorates the artwork outside the LF gate at Safeco.

  66. Keo on June 4th, 2010 11:14 pm

Oh is batting practice over? I though there was going to be a game on tonight.

  67. Milendriel on June 4th, 2010 11:54 pm

At this point, is there any reason Snell is even on the roster? He doesn’t go deep into games, he doesn’t throw strikes, he doesn’t miss bats, he doesn’t keep the ball in the park, let alone on the ground… he and Tuiasosopo are apparently competing to see who can be more worthless at baseball yet still be allowed to stand on the field.

  68. Breadbaker on June 4th, 2010 11:58 pm

My recollection is that the first swing and a miss by an Angels hitter was two straight Chad Cordero got against Abreu, ending what was the first strikeout of the game by a Mariner pitcher. Snell had nothing, Figgins pulled the ball hard to third twice in a row with Ichiro on first, and the team made Joe Saunders look like a left-handed Pedro in his prime. We got our train, we were sitting with some really nice people, including friends I haven’t seen in ages, the gyros on the 300 level actually aren’t bad, and I got to chat with Chris Bosio (who was scouting for the Brewers). So except for the ballgame, I had a great time.

  69. spankystout on June 5th, 2010 12:01 am

    Westside guy

It isn’t whining when its the truth. This has been an intolerable performance, peppered with drama. Seemingly Murphy’s Law chose to torment the M’s this year.

  70. marinermedic on June 5th, 2010 7:57 am

I wish they would throw Josh Wilson in the 2 hole. Seems like most of hits are going to right field (and getting of the ground…figgins). Throw figgins in the 9 hole so he can do some damage when he actually gets on base.

  71. rmarshall on June 5th, 2010 8:30 am

Let’s face it, there is no shortage of things we can call him. Out of love and respect, again and always.

    The Statue

    The Field Genital
    PBJ (slanderous to sandwiches everywhere)
