Game 54, Angels at Mariners

Saunders vs Snell, 7:10 pm.

What a horrific pitching match-up – veritable FanGraphs contributor Carson Cistulli created the NERD formula to try to quantify just how “watchable” a pitcher is, and Snell and Saunders both rate a 0 out of 10. Yech.

In newsy stuff, Ryan Rowland-Smith will start in place of Doug Fister tomorrow, who is suffering from “dead arm”. His velocity was down in his last start, and it looks like he needs some rest.

Somewhat interesting choice with the line-up tonight. Against a lefty, Sweeney is not playing – Langerhans is in left, Bradley is at DH, and Tui is playing first. I’d imagine we’ll hear something about his back being tight or something. Slump or not, hard to imagine Wak choosing Langerhans over Sweeney against a lefty.

Ichiro, RF
Figgins, 2B
Gutierrez, CF
Lopez, 3B
Bradley, DH
Josh Wilson, SS
Tuiasosopo, 1B
Alfonzo, C
Langerhans, LF

Finally, the real Joe Saunders decided to show up.

Oh right, sure, Sean, that’s what we could have used, oh, EVERY other time you entered the game besides tonight.

    Great AB, Josh

Ichiro, RF: “I’m just here to bat .350 and throw people out at 3B”
    Another selfish hit by Ichiro!

I meant that as a good great thing. Ichiro is the fucking man.

Another swell Snell line: 4 BB, 0 SO.

Not many comments tonight. Are people skipping the Snell/Saunders duel, or is there just not much to say about it so far? Both are plausible…

Just when you thought the SUB-MARINERS might surface and put together a streak worth getting excited about they go and pull the same old shit….they were about to break the surface and come up for a little fresh air and sunshine but it looks like it’s down periscope for now folks….

Modern Warfare 2 is much more interesting than this game.

I hate to complain about the announcers, but I am sooo tired of Dave Sims constantly saying “The Angels are on a role! They have won 7 out of 10 games!”…Its like he has no memory that they have played the mariners, that we suck awful….its like they just rolled in from NY and Tampa Bay sweeping them both. He always says that.
Also, what are the options for free agents at catcher and first base for next year? I guess I would rather put my eggs in that basket than give something valuable away for crap this year.

ps: CAUTION: SUBMARINERS ARE RIDING THE PINK TORPEDO IN THE BULLPEN…..DIVE DIVE DIVE!!!

Call up Luke French, Snell is terrible!!

Yes. Should have done that a long time ago for Hyphen!

That first one, for me at least.

Something about this season has been really draining. I don’t usually mind following a losing team – heck, I’m a very long-time Mariners fan so I’m very used to it! But with (what appear to me to be) constant, repetitive indefensible management and roster decisions, combined with the unfortunate bad starts from most of those few players with legitimate upsides… right now I’ve simply got little tolerance for those games where I see little hope. Unlike in past years, at this point in time I find myself quickly tuning out of these sorts of games most of the time.

That probably reads like yet another whiny complaint, but I didn’t mean it to be. It’s just a long-winded explanation from this individual regarding why I’m an ephemeral fan right now.

So I’m well aware Rob Johnson is not in the lineup as of this moment, but…the time seems right to float another nickname for him. Out of respect and love, of course.

    How’s “The Resiever?”

That’s good, but I like “The Sculpture” myself. It highlights his footwork, and also commemorates the artwork outside the LF gate at Safeco.

Oh is batting practice over? I though there was going to be a game on tonight.

At this point, is there any reason Snell is even on the roster? He doesn’t go deep into games, he doesn’t throw strikes, he doesn’t miss bats, he doesn’t keep the ball in the park, let alone on the ground… he and Tuiasosopo are apparently competing to see who can be more worthless at baseball yet still be allowed to stand on the field.

My recollection is that the first swing and a miss by an Angels hitter was two straight Chad Cordero got against Abreu, ending what was the first strikeout of the game by a Mariner pitcher. Snell had nothing, Figgins pulled the ball hard to third twice in a row with Ichiro on first, and the team made Joe Saunders look like a left-handed Pedro in his prime. We got our train, we were sitting with some really nice people, including friends I haven’t seen in ages, the gyros on the 300 level actually aren’t bad, and I got to chat with Chris Bosio (who was scouting for the Brewers). So except for the ballgame, I had a great time.

    Westside guy

It isn’t whining when its the truth. This has been an intolerable performance, peppered with drama. Seemingly Murphy’s Law chose to torment the M’s this year.

I wish they would throw Josh Wilson in the 2 hole. Seems like most of hits are going to right field (and getting of the ground…figgins). Throw figgins in the 9 hole so he can do some damage when he actually gets on base.

That’s good, but I like “The Sculpture” myself.

Let’s face it, there is no shortage of things we can call him. Out of love and respect, again and always.

    The Statue
The Stabber (how he treats pitches and our hearts)
    The Field Genital
    PBJ (slanderous to sandwiches everywhere)
