Game 55, Angels at Mariners

Dave · June 5, 2010 at 11:00 am · Filed Under Mariners

Santana vs Rowland-Smith, 1:10 pm.

It’s turn back the clock day, so maybe RRS will turn the clock back to last year and pitch well. Would be nice to see, as the Mariners could use an option to replace Ian Snell in the rotation.

Ichiro, RF
Figgins, 2B
Gutierrez, CF
Lopez, 3B
Bradley, DH
Josh Wilson, SS
Kotchman, 1B
Johnson, C
Saunders, LF

Wak’s bullpen management is going from the comical to the tragic.

  2. lalo on June 5th, 2010 3:14 pm

    Sean White……..

    This is awful,

  3. SonOfZavaras on June 5th, 2010 3:16 pm

    Sean White in. Priceless.

Because every bonfire already in progress needs to add a ton of gas and a match.

  4. scottg02 on June 5th, 2010 3:16 pm

Good Wak is finally using Sean White correctly.

  5. SonOfZavaras on June 5th, 2010 3:17 pm

If I want good news with this team, apparently I have to wait for the draft….

  6. kenshabby on June 5th, 2010 3:21 pm

Eight walks in fewer than six innings. A formula for success if there ever was one.

Last season Shawn Kelley had 9 BB in 46 IP. Today he managed to have nearly half that total in 1/3 IP. Amazing.

  7. Utis on June 5th, 2010 3:21 pm

Kelley sure picked a bad time to have a bad outing.

  8. DC on June 5th, 2010 3:27 pm

Great thing is we gave up the 18th pick to sign Figgins. 🙁

  9. MX on June 5th, 2010 3:37 pm

The only major league players in this club: two position players (Ichiro, Guti), Four starters (Felix, Lee, Fister, Vargas).

  10. Utis on June 5th, 2010 3:38 pm

    Let Ichiro pitch!

  11. Breadbaker on June 5th, 2010 3:40 pm

Great thing is we gave up the 18th pick to sign Figgins.

Seriously? Look at the players picked 18th in the draft. It includes Aaron Heilmann and R.A. Dickey (and those are among the better picks; most didn’t even make the majors). Wanna trade Chone straight up for them?

  12. lalo on June 5th, 2010 3:42 pm

Seriosly, Sean White is the worst pitcher in the mayors, seriously

  13. samregens on June 5th, 2010 3:43 pm

Drop freaking Figgins to 9th please!

The Ichiro #1, Guti #2 lineup worked fine last year. Let’s go back to it and have Figgins do his crappy thing at #9.

  14. SonOfZavaras on June 5th, 2010 3:43 pm

God, when I think of all the people that it’s probably best if they go elsewhere, or become Kansas City Royals or something….

Sean White, for sure. Rob Johnson. Casey Kotchman, he of the “how many cliches can I put in one interview when I’m not hitting” vein…and even the ones that don’t beg for outright expulsion (like RRS and Tui, both due to relative youth)just don’t excite with possibility.

This team is not only inconsistent throughout and bad in general…it’s boring to watch on the games like this, which are way too frequent.

I could live with a bad team if there was something there to look forward to. But other than I’m sorry this is the team The Condor cuts his big-league teeth on, there isn’t.

  15. Idaho M on June 5th, 2010 3:43 pm

I would say after these two games Waks employment status is officially on shaky ground.
Not that these are two losses but the fact that these are such embarassing losses. We didnt even compete. Now Dave Niehaus is singing the Wabash Cannonball !

  16. samregens on June 5th, 2010 3:44 pm

Ichiro #1 and Guti #2. Let’s have our two best hitters get the most at bats at the top of the lineup.

  17. scott19 on June 5th, 2010 3:47 pm

Well, when I come back in from outside and turn on the radio to hear Niehaus singing “The Wabash Cannonball,” I know the Angels must be ahead by about a zillion runs! >:(

I’m sorry now that I was even complaining earlier about this game not being on TV.

  18. kenshabby on June 5th, 2010 3:48 pm

    Throw. F’ing. Strikes.

  19. SonOfZavaras on June 5th, 2010 3:49 pm

I’ve still got hope for the Shawn Kelleys and Adam Moores on this team. And of course, Saunders, who I think hasn’t hardly tapped into his major-league potential.

But the lack of dynamic ability makes the wait for the bats on the farm (like Ackley, Triunfel and Poythress) all the more damnable.

  20. GarForever on June 5th, 2010 3:52 pm

Wake me when the Mariners decide to field a major league team again. The only good that can come out of this is if it finally convinces someone in the organization to DFA White’s ass so I don’t ever have to watch him pitch again. Otherwise, that’s it: it’s over. This team doesn’t have what it takes, the talent, the managerial acumen, ANYTHING, they need this year to have any chance of catching the three mediocre teams in this division. Do you know what the Angels’ winning percentage would be if not for the M’s? .480!!! They’re not even that good, and they just take us to the woodshed, repeatedly. Shrill? Yes, but I don’t care at this point: they suck, I give up.

Well, I can now take three hours of every day back for the rest of the summer, so there’s that at least…

[sound of spitting the nasty taste out of my mouth…]

  21. scott19 on June 5th, 2010 3:53 pm

Seriosly, Sean White is the worst pitcher in the mayors, seriously

Yes…but since he’s a “local” guy, Wak and Z are required to keep him around as a Designated Gas Can.

I would say after these two games Waks employment status is officially on shaky ground.

I would agree — since his “system” isn’t exactly working too well.

    Let Ichiro pitch!

Wak should’ve let him…it probably would’ve been an improvement!

  22. Utis on June 5th, 2010 3:54 pm

Cashman and Theo must be calling Z abut Lee two or three times a day.

  23. lalo on June 5th, 2010 3:55 pm

    what happened to Ichiro?

    Was injured??

  24. MX on June 5th, 2010 4:04 pm

Nothing wrong with Ichiro. Just let him rest a little bit. No need to play in such a meaningless game.

  25. scott19 on June 5th, 2010 4:04 pm

I agree with Niehaus and Sims…watching a bullfight would be far more exciting than this game!

  26. marinerblue on June 5th, 2010 4:05 pm

Rolling out Kotchman and RoJo on a daily basis is proof that this team is NOT a contender – don’t let a mini win streak fool you. These two guys do not exist on a team in a penant race. Johnson is an absolute joke. Kotchman plays 1B and hits below .200!!! That cannot happen – a first baseman MUST hit the ball. We are just another inept crappy team.

  27. GarForever on June 5th, 2010 4:05 pm

    what happened to Ichiro?

    Was injured??

Maybe they had to pull him because they’ve worked out a trade. Seriously, though, I just feel bad for Ichiro at this point: awesome player, and in his 9+ seasons here, the team has been really good three of them, better than average one, so-so one, and terrible the rest of the time.

In reality, maybe Wak was at least smart enough to pull his one truly great player from a meaningless game so he wouldn’t get injured.

  28. rick m on June 5th, 2010 4:08 pm

    This team is an embarassment.

  29. MX on June 5th, 2010 4:10 pm

I feel sorry for Dave. He rated the M’s 6th before the season started.

  30. scott19 on June 5th, 2010 4:10 pm

Call me crazy, but that new ad for O’Reilly Auto Parts sounds somewhat pornographic.

  31. scott19 on June 5th, 2010 4:12 pm

He rated the M’s 6th before the season started.

Yes, but he meant 6th in the division…oh, wait.

  32. SonOfZavaras on June 5th, 2010 4:13 pm

Nah, embarrassments would score more than one run and not allow as many as eleven.

    This is beyond.

Seriously, I’m going out and enjoying sunshine. I don’t have enough of a masochistic streak to endure the rest of this.

  33. scott19 on June 5th, 2010 4:23 pm

Someone mentioned that the Angels are not that good of a team…and I would agree. Unfortunately (and maybe in part because of those goofy walk-off wins last weekend), I think they’ve become the “new” Oakland — i.e. the team which, no matter how good or bad they are, has gotten into the M’s collective head to where they just cannot buy a series win against them.

I hope this stigma does not last as long as it did with the A’s, though.

  34. Des71 on June 5th, 2010 4:28 pm

This is from ESPN’s Jayson Stark:

“Cliff dwellers: OK, so you can’t trade for Roy Oswalt right this minute, but how about Cliff Lee? Clubs that have touched base with GM Jack Zduriencik continue to report that the Mariners “have to make sure their season isn’t salvageable” before they begin seriously contemplating dealing Lee.

But an executive of one team says he thinks Zduriencik could be tempted to move Lee today if he could get a package fronted by an impact bat “he could have around for a while.” But it’s hard to envision any contender trading away that kind of bat for a half-year rent-a-starter.”

  35. juneau_fan on June 5th, 2010 4:28 pm

Thanks, Lopez, for taking away any vague attempt at a comeback by swinging at the first pitch. Wouldn’t want to work a pitcher who’s walked two already.

  36. scott19 on June 5th, 2010 4:40 pm

Aaaaaaaand…the best thing Matt Pitman has to say about the game is that the teal shirts were cool.

  37. DC on June 5th, 2010 4:47 pm

    Bread,

The point is you give up a pick that an organization like this needs just to sign a guy. It’s not like you are trading the pick. Hello?

  38. Refuse2Lose20666 on June 5th, 2010 4:53 pm

Yah I can’t take this team seriously as long as there putting out robo and kotchman.

  39. ivan on June 5th, 2010 5:30 pm

If the Yankees want Lee, they can send Jesus Montero here.

  40. zeebfan on June 5th, 2010 6:21 pm

Ugh. We need the Spelling AND the Grammar Police. There’s a difference among their, there and they’re. Use them right; otherwise, it’s hard to take YOU seriously.

  41. blackhook on June 5th, 2010 6:38 pm

In ONE INNING, 2 M’s relievers give up:

    — 5 walks
    — 1 wild pitch
    — 1 hit batter
    — 3 hits
    — 6 runs

Bring back Bobby Ayala!!! Anything is better than this…the worst bullpen I have ever seen.

And to rub it in, today Jamie Moyer got a complete game win, giving up 2 runs, 7 hits & only 1 walk.

    [this is not a board]

  43. Rick Banjo on June 5th, 2010 7:56 pm

Why must you call it “Faux”? There is only one set of people that insist on calling it that, and I want to avoid politics in a baseball blog.

It’s not a political thing. Joe Buck is HORRIBLE. ‘Faux’ is the only apt descriptor of his game-calling ability. I don’t care what your political tilt is, the guy is preposterously bad.

  44. GarForever on June 5th, 2010 8:04 pm

Okay Uptight Seattleite it’s a messageboard.

Be that as it may, word to the wise: many of the veteran posters here, to say nothing of the authors, have long appreciated the fact that, unlike the P-I or mlb.com message boards, the quality of the posts in both style and substance here aspire to a higher quality. Not only do people NOT get away with inanity here, for the most part, we also like the fact that we don’t have to sift through “ransom note” typing or gibberish to determine whether or not something is inane. Some might get a little uptight about it, but if you expect people here to take your ideas seriously, you had better make an effort at proper grammar and spelling. Dave and the boys, when they have the time, DO police that sort of thing.

    Rick –

Thanks for backing me up on that one, bro…I certainly wasn’t trying to sidetrack this thread into a political discussion at all. What I was getting at, though, is something that a lot of us here (regardless of politics) seem to be in agreement on — namely, the incredible lack of professionalism and objectivity that you see on that network way too often. Though Buck and McCarver (and especially Buck!) are the absolute worst, the Big Network seems to be a magnet for attracting some of the worst, most one-sided, and most incompetent analysts in professional sports. (I’m thinking of also Eric Karros here as well as that other idiot whose name escapes me at the moment that was hanging out on the rockpile in Anaheim last Saturday, to name just two of many more.)

While I appreciate a major TV network taking enough of an interest in the Saturday afternoon games to at least keep them on the air when the last contracts were up, it’s a shame it had to be Fox…since the circus antics of their broadcasts is slowly — and sadly — lowering the level of televised baseball to that of a professional wrestling broadcast.

  46. Breadbaker on June 5th, 2010 11:09 pm

    Bread,

The point is you give up a pick that an organization like this needs just to sign a guy. It’s not like you are trading the pick. Hello?

Just to sign a guy? Chone Figgins is just a guy? (A) Chone Figgins, even the Chone Figgins we saw in April and May, is better than the vast majority of 18th picks; (B) the M’s are actually required to place players at all four infield positions and had no better option at all than signing Chone Figgins to play one of them; (C) it’s inappropriate to base your position on the signing on his first two months of a lengthy contract.

  47. ivan on June 6th, 2010 5:10 am

I’m in total agreement with scott19. Pox announcers are so shriekingly stupid that every time I am forced to watch the Mariners, the playoffs, or the World Series on Pox, I do it with the sound off.

They blather on and on about everything imaginable EXCEPT the game in front of them. This is deliberate, and no one can convince me that it isn’t. They aim to leave you with the impression that THEY are the show. I loathe this network with a white-hot passion.

  48. DC on June 6th, 2010 9:56 am

    Bread,

Ike Davis, Rick Porcello, Daniel Bard, Chris Coghlan are just some of the guys available to pick at 18 the past few years. These are guys the team can have under control salary wise for several years instead of paying a guy 9 Mil. on a team that is not constructed to contend. Point being that this team isn’t going to win anything whether you have Figgins or someone else at 2B.

  49. Breadbaker on June 6th, 2010 10:56 am

DC, that’s still a specious argument. Figgins will be with the team when it’s ready to contend again. You cherry pick good prospects, but ignore the ones whose parachutes didn’t open, which of course include a lot of guys the M’s have picked in recent years. The return on investment for high draft picks is overall fairly poor; the M’s got a discount from Figgins based on the loss of the draft pick.
