Game 73, Mariners at Brewers

Rowland-Smith vs Bush, 5:10 pm.

Today, Jack Z told Ken Rosenthal that he wasn’t yet ready to throw in the towel, because the pitching is too good to give up. The pitching is good, but the Mariners are 14 games out of first place, and are now chasing a team with the second best record in baseball. If the Rangers play .500 ball the rest of the way, they’ll win 89 games. For the Mariners to win 90 and beat them out, they would have to go 60-30 the rest of the way. No pitching staff is good enough to carry this roster to a .667 winning percentage for three months.

I can understand the reluctance to give up when the team is playing well, but the season is over. Throw in the towel, Jack. Play for the future – it’s all we have left at this point.

Looks like a good night to have a depleted bullpen. I hoped that Hyphen had turned a corner but it looks like he is still the same middling to lower echelon player he was before his stint in the pen.

Wow…that was some impressive run construction there.

Did you see that jump Guti got?

No, me either. Gotta love the camera work.

Man, even Vicente Padilla could probably pitch a complete game in the time it takes Dave Bush to go five or six innings.

MLB Network showing Edwin Jackson’s no hitter.

  6. David on June 25th, 2010 6:51 pm

    135 pitches for Jackson. Wow.

  7. scott19 on June 25th, 2010 7:06 pm

And eight walks for Jackson in that game, too.

  8. scott19 on June 25th, 2010 7:35 pm

    Or the Royals.

But they don’t have anything we’d want.

Well, Zack Greinke, perhaps…but then again, I don’t think they’d trade him.

On another note, it’s nice to see Garrett Olson shooting for that coveted DGC award again.

    Garrett Olson continues to impress.

Instead of the helmets from 300, I think they should hang a red gas can out in the bullpen this season.

What does Jose Lopez have to do to earn a spot on the bench?

Maybe start a fight with some teammates — like Carlos Zambrano did.

According to Krueger in the post game show, the bullpen is overworked and the Mariners may need to remove a position player and call up a reliever…

Has he been around the last week?

In other news, Bill took a shower and thus the Gulf oil spill has dropped to the second largest in US history.

    LOL!!!

Actually, I’ve noticed how Count Krueger’s hair isn’t quite so slick lately…so maybe that accounts for it. 🙂

Breaking the bank on Lee and extending him now to a long-term contract is better than trading him. I agree that the season is over but I would love to see Lee signed long term. If Lee would have been of Japanese descent, no dollar amount would have been spared to sign him long-term now.

Why is Adam Moore in Tacoma? Can’t Z and Wak see the obvious: That Rob Johnson is a terrible defensive catcher? Johnson buddies up to the pitchers so they will declare him their favorite to throw to. Unfortunately, he gives up passed balls at an alarming rate and even the ‘wild pitches’ that occur with him behind the dish are often generously scored as such – he should block many of them. Send his pathetic rear end packing and let Moore develop at the major league level.

Better in what sense? Make you feel better? Or actually better for the team in the long run?

Why is Adam Moore in Tacoma?

Our two best catchers are in Tacoma and on the DL. Our two worst catchers are on the team.

So what is worse, the upside down trident or that dog pawprint Mb thing on the Brewer caps?

You’re insane. The M trident and the baseball mitt Brewers cap are both awesome.

Yes, I do. And I still say that. Fan interests are not precisely the same as owner interests.

No kidding. Just ask anyone who follows the Marlins (or the Expos before that, who had the same owner). And, while we’re at it, how about those Sonics?

    So Prince Fielder next year?

Well, the one thing about chasing an overpriced 1st baseman is that the Yankees already have one.

But if the M’s are going to get into that chase, I don’t think my first choice would be Fielder (though I realize Z knows him better than any of the other options, which may be both good and bad). Every time I look at Fielder I get ugly Mo Vaughn flashbacks; I know that’s unfair, but I think I’d much rather have Adrian Gonzales.

Mike Sweeney continues to prove the skeptics wrong.

Except for all the times he’s on the DL and/or proving them right…

You’re insane. The M trident and the baseball mitt Brewers cap are both awesome.

I agree. In fact I remember the first time I saw the Brewer’s mb/glove logo and thinking it was the most brilliant thing I’d ever seen. Mind you, I was probably 9 years old and just becoming aware of design principles in general, but even today I think it’s pretty inspired. The only other one in baseball that comes close is that A-D snakehead logo that Arizona mostly hides on their sleeves. I love the M’s trident and it’s on the cap I wear to games, but I don’t think it’s quite on the same level (and I secretly fear that it, and I by wearing it, are helping “the luck run out”)

The future is all we have left at this point? When is the future?

Did Annie teach you nothing? Tomorrow! It’s always a day away! C’mon, it’s Pride Weekend, get out and see some musical theater!

  23. Glen on June 26th, 2010 10:18 am

I love the trident. I wish the M’s would go back to that as their main cap logo. The compass rose is just too predictable and boring.

  24. joser on June 26th, 2010 2:24 pm

I could go for the compass rose if it was 3D. You know, if it stuck out of the hat like a half dome with pointy things sticking out of it.

BTW, the AquaSox have adopted a (rotated) trident as the road logo on their caps.
