Game 74, Mariners at Brewers

Fister vs Wolf, 1:10 pm.

Shawn Kelley went on the DL to make room for Fister on the roster, and David Aardsma has left the team to be with his wife for the birth of their child. Fister went four innings in his only rehab start. This could be a complete disaster. If he’s limited to less than 5 innings – a real possibility against a Brewers team that can hit – we’re looking at a lot of mound time for Brian Sweeney, Sean White, and Garrett Olson, because League is the defacto “closer” for the next few days and Chad Cordero is likely unavailable after pitching yesterday. So, yeah, the M’s probably need to score 10+ runs to win today.

At least Fielder didn’t shake the shack.

I hadn’t seen that before – that was hilarious! Of course Fielder was lucky he didn’t snap his ankle…

At least Fielder didn’t shake the shack. If he did that at Safeco

Did you see Bosio at the end of that video? It looks like he’s carrying an extra couple hundred pounds too.

    Those shadows are brutal.

As Lopez throws out the runner, I’m reminded of a comment during last weekend’s FOX game. Apparently Lopez said he preferred third because he felt his arm was too strong for second and he tended to throw the ball away to first a lot. My eyelid started twitching and it’s been twitching ever since. Did he share with with his coaches all those years we suffered with his horrible play at second?

    I want a sausage fest.

You’re in luck! Just come up to Capitol Hill. It’s Pride weekend!

    And controversial.

    Sweeney can pitch a little.

“Pitching:” move the ball around, hit your spots, change speeds, get ahead in the count.

“Throwing:” what Aardsma does – too often, but can sometimtes get away with; what Snell always does; what RRS all too frequently does; what White and Olsen cannot even do.

White and Olsen have to be joining Snell in AAA soon – don’t they? Presently, it would only leave a 3 man bullpen, but that just might be okay too.

    And controversial.

I remember the story about Zito plunking Fielder from this past spring training – but I didn’t know much about the “why”.

Payback after six months does seem rather silly – I mean, if you have to *remind* the other team what it was all about, it seems like a waste of effort.

Plus, a Zito “fastball”… only slightly more intimidating than one from Moyer.

  9. joser on June 26th, 2010 4:03 pm

Yeah, it seemed to be greeted by general bemusement around the cactus league. Like when one child has a total hissy-fit meltdown and all the other kids stand around looking at him like “WTF is up with him?”

Also, for DMZ’s benefit: apparently there was something called a “hotdog blessing” this morning to kick off the Pride parade, and Po Dogs was giving away free Deep-Fried Danger Dogs.

Eat your heart out, cholesterol-enhanced Wisconsinners.

    And Johnson drops the splitter.

*sigh* But at least it didn’t get away from him.

Finally! Saunders in left for Bradley for defense – I have wanted this move made many times before.

  13. Westside guy on June 26th, 2010 4:06 pm

Yeah – and I loved how Fielder just picked it up on his way to first and tossed it back to him. Almost like “I’m sorry, were you looking for this?”

    Yes! DTFT x 2!

Well, see he figured that was balanced out by his weak legs that often made it impossible for him to reach the ball in first place. As a result, in his mind, he was the perfectly-balanced second baseman!

B Sweeney deserves a pie in the face.

    Did Aardsma’s wife deliver yet?

  19. joser on June 26th, 2010 4:18 pm

This team would look so much better playing in the NL Central. Or the NL West.

  20. juneau_fan on June 26th, 2010 4:18 pm

Who could believe the best possible outcome with the game plan? Yes, Fister only goes four, but Sweeney take the other four and League survives the ninth. The ball’s bounced the Mariners way so little this season, I’m still in shock.

And FSN, STOP TALKING ABOUT THE USA WC GAME!!

Would you rather the broadcast crew spent their time discussing college conference re-alignment? At least World Cup soccer involves games and competition.

As a Nebraska fan, Yes I would :p

B Sweeney deserves a pie in the face.

Don’t insult Sweeney like that, he’s 36 not some kid. He made his MLB debut in 2004, and he pitched 56 innings for the Padres as recently as 2006. This was his 4th career win.

He’s had a strange, and very spotty career.

Well, a lot of folks have been studiously avoiding seeing the scores so that they can enjoy the games at times better-suited to this timezone. I’ve been listening to M’s games on the radio (and otherwise avoiding sports media in general) for the past couple of weeks for this very reason, since the TV broadcasts have been littered with the unexpected landmines of match results.

The pub across the street has tape up across the bottom of their TV screens so the “crawl” can’t give away the results, and have signs up saying DON’T TALK ABOUT TODAY’S WC RESULTS because most of their patrons come in to watch the games on TiVo with no knowledge of the outcome.

That said, the USA-GHA match today was at a reasonable-enough time (and on a weekend to boot) that there’s less excuse to have not seen it live; and in any case, the onus to avoid the topic is on the viewer, not the broadcasters. If you don’t want to hear about the World Cup results, don’t listen to / watch media that might discuss it.

(The real landmine of results is apparently facebook; I’ve heard from several folks that they’ve stumbled across results that way. Then again, I have little sympathy for facebook users in general.)

Of course, if the complaint is just that the after-Mariners show is talking about something other than the Mariners, well… can you really blame them?

No. I can’t even stand it when posters here yak about college football during game threads. I’m sure there’s blogs for that; go there and leave me alone with my college football hate.

I’ve actually enjoyed their little recaps of the soccer games, but didn’t need the salt in the wound of the USA result. But I can see joser’s point about trying to watch the games later without being spoiled.

ETA, joser, they also discuss the WC results several times during the games. So at least four times during this game, Angie was grinning like a fool and telling me I wasn’t going to guess what had happened in South Africa! Er, no, I know. I was watching the game.

    Yeah, I’m with Joser here.

I honestly didn’t even look to see a Mariners score til after the World Cup was over. And I listened to most of the game on the radio while going through the massive traffic jam caused by the Rock and Roll Marathon. Soccer on the radio, that will tell you how much I’ve got World Cup fever.
