Couple Of Links

Two quick things for you today. First, my newest post is up over on Brock and Salk’s blog, and continues our conversation about Jason Vargas, BABIP, and how to evaluate pitchers. I’ve enjoyed this back and forth with Mike on a subject I know is tough for people to swallow.

Secondly, I did a video chat with the Bloomberg Sports crew, which you can see below. Nothing earth shattering, but check it out if you want.

David, good work as always. I can even tell you are trying to slow down your speaking which is great!.

Couple of ideas since interviewing over webcams seems to be more and more prevalent. Try turning on a desk lamp and aim it at your face, its not studio lighting so it might help.

Sit back a bit from the camera so you are not all head. If you can see the people interviewing you, try to match them.

Lastly, lets work on a back drop for you to sit in front of, possibly with repeating USS logos. that would just look cool.

Love seeing you interviewed. Keep up the good work.

sorry for the double post. I was trying to edit the first one to say how a backdrop, besides looking cool, would prevent it from looking like you are being interviewed from your dorm room.

Good points about lighting and backdrop. Though Dave would probably want to have something that alternated and in a checkerboard fashion*. It shouldn’t be hard or uber-expensive to get some place like Kinkos to run off something like that at poster size or larger — they might even be able to do it on thick cardstock or posterboard for you.

    Couple more:

    1) Camera height: You want it slightly higher so you are looking directly at it, or slightly upward towards it. Looking down make it seem like you are “looming.”

    2) You looked like you were really trying not to move at all. I understand that the web cam isn’t going to take massive movement, but it looks a little not-human to sitting so still. Watch the video and the amount of natural movement the female Bloomberg host has.

    3) Another vote for sitting further back. You need your face to be framed in the image.

    4) As noted above, you are probably only going to be doing this more and more, so it makes sense to find a backdrop. I recall a Buster Olney comment (written, or maybe in a Bill Simmons podcast) about the pull-down backdrop he has that is like a window shade, and is attached to his bookshelves behind his desk. You don’t necessarily need anything that fancy, but might look at picking up a fabric backdrop (like photographers use) that you could pin up, or you one of the stands.

Looking and sound ever better – you are going to be a “real” media guy pretty soon…

You clearly didn’t find it funny when the other guy mentioned Bedard. What is the deal with Josh Fields anyway? Will he ever make it to the majors?

You guys do realize that it’s the content of what he says that’s important, not the way he looks delivering it, right?

Maybe Michelle Steele can take over one of our FSN commentator positions…

Dude, no offense, but you’re not as cute as Michelle Steele.

In this example, I try to simulate some of the ideas above.

Yeah, let’s get him the backdrop!

    Carson – that’s amazing!

Yes, but his head! What did you do to his head!? The Photoshop swirl/distortion filter is not supposed to be used that way.

Also the whole fake suit thing is hilarious.

Yeah, let’s get him the backdrop!

Well, over at lookout landing they organized a banner in honor of Jack Z to hang at Safeco, and look how well that turned out. At least if we put this together we’d be pretty sure of actually seeing it on video (on the web at least).

Well done Dave. After reading this site for the longest time, and now hearing you on with Brock and Salk, it’s nice to see the face that I’ve been gaining all my ‘in-depth’ mariner knowledge. This site is awesome and I’m glad you do what you do. (although, the sheer amount of daily ussmariner hits generated by my computer is borderline pathetic haha)
