I look forward to the day when our 3-4-5 becomes Branyan-Smoak-Saunders. So close right now, just need to get that extra body outta there.

Obligatory “I can’t believe Lopez is still the clean-up hitter!” comment. There, taken care of.

For those curious Gutierrez is tending to a family matter today.

Sub in Guti and this is probably my favorite lineup of the year.

    I get it – you’re using reverse psychology! Clever…

HA! I was just about to post something about that and hadn’t refreshed yet. The only “cleanup” I want Lopez to do is of his locker.

  7. SODOMOJO360 on July 27th, 2010 3:46 pm

Best lineup we’ve had in a while. Everyone argues about Lopez at 4th but we really don’t have many options so this argument is really getting old. He doesn’t take walks or strike out much so he’s always putting the ball in play at least. It’s just not getting out of the infield this year. He did have 90+ RBI last year but other than putting our real young guys, Smoak and Saunders in there with all that pressure, who else would hit 4th? When Guti is playing I would flip flop him and Branyan in the 3 and 4 hole depending on if Lefty or Righty pitcher.

  9. Nate on July 27th, 2010 4:09 pm

RRS’s HR problem is most likely due to uncontrollable randomness. I’m pretty much used to it now though.

  10. SODOMOJO360 on July 27th, 2010 4:43 pm

Talk about shouldn’t be in lineup….The fact that the Hyphen is still starting is a joke.

  11. Paul B on July 27th, 2010 4:50 pm

but other than putting our real young guys, Smoak and Saunders in there with all that pressure, who else would hit 4th

The young guys are getting a very reassuring lesson this year: you can suck, you can be the worst hitter on the team, you can be one of the worst hitters in the league, and you can still bat fourth. So go out there and swing away, no pressure!

  12. Paul B on July 27th, 2010 4:53 pm

did have 90+ RBI last year

Really? In late July you use the number of RBI in the previous season as the primary stat for deciding on the lineup?

Who else bats 4th? We are just that bad.

Bench his GDP clean up hitting asssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

  15. SODOMOJO360 on July 27th, 2010 5:16 pm

I change my mind, I agree with everyone, haha

  16. KPS on July 27th, 2010 5:17 pm

As Lopez was coming up, I told my brother he’d hit into a 5-4-3 DP on the first pitch. I think it says more about his hitting “skills” than my prognostication powers.

  17. lalo on July 27th, 2010 5:20 pm

The question is: Who is the idiot in the Lopez suckfest?

    A)Lopez, is an idiot
    B)Wak, he writes the lineup
C)Jack, (trade him for bags or release)

  18. Marinersmanjk on July 27th, 2010 5:23 pm

So when do we finally just give up on our aussie friend and bring back Snell or someone? I’m tired of him. He doesn’t have good stuff at all.

  19. greentunic on July 27th, 2010 5:25 pm

Sub in Guti and this is probably my favorite lineup of the year.

Hear hear Hendu. I completely agree. Nice to see Branyan, Smoak, and Saunders.

  20. matthew on July 27th, 2010 5:25 pm

Curious if anyone else was having problems with the stream for Dave’s spot on 1510 today. Couldn’t get the stream to work with Firefox, IE8 or Google Chrome.

  21. greentunic on July 27th, 2010 5:29 pm

    Gosh, RRS is sooooo goooood!

  22. Marinersmanjk on July 27th, 2010 5:30 pm

Shit, just pull him. I’d rather see Garrett Olson.

  23. SODOMOJO360 on July 27th, 2010 5:31 pm

No way you bring back Snell but Hyphen has to go!!! Start Seddon or Olson, anyone besides Hyphen or Snell. Pineda is ready too.

  24. koostema12 on July 27th, 2010 5:31 pm

Why…is RRS even starting still…Let alone still on the team…how about French?

  25. Marinersmanjk on July 27th, 2010 5:38 pm

God damnit Loez is hurt. Now we’lll never be able to trade him.

  26. SODOMOJO360 on July 27th, 2010 5:38 pm

Nice Lopez hurt, though it damages his trade value, whatever value that is

  27. msfanmike on July 27th, 2010 5:39 pm

Lopez out of the game after 1 AB: About fucking time!

No discipline, no approach … but the real reason is probably related to him grabbing his left hammy as he crossed first base. At least that is what I think I saw.

Hyphen – joke … ditto to what SODO said. Basically, ditto to everything he has said today.

  28. SODOMOJO360 on July 27th, 2010 5:41 pm

How blind are coach and Jack. THE HYPHEN IS DONE. Admit it! Tacoma bound or cut him.

  29. matthew on July 27th, 2010 5:41 pm

It’s difficult to choose what to watch tonight.

“Armageddon” the movie is showing on FX. “Armageddon” the Seattle Mariners’ 2010 baseball season is showing on FSN.

  30. Swungonandbelted on July 27th, 2010 5:42 pm

Wooo! Hyphen is tossing a gem early in this one….

I believe he’s out of options SODO, so it would be a DFA….

  31. msfanmike on July 27th, 2010 5:42 pm

6-0 already. Keep RRS in the game at this point. No sense in blowing up the pen now. There was no sense in pitching RRS to begin with (or ever again for that matter), but leave him in for today.

Let’s see how many runs this dumb-ass can give up in a game.

The over under is 17 runs

  32. matthew on July 27th, 2010 5:43 pm

I’m confused. Why are the White Sox still having batting practice? What time does the game start?

  33. Marinersmanjk on July 27th, 2010 5:43 pm

Really? What the fuck is wrong with RRS? Even Neihaus is ripping on him now.

  34. lalo on July 27th, 2010 5:43 pm

Hyphen is awful, is a good guy, but a terrible pitcher at this point… Jack, put him in waivers like Snell or in the bullpen the rest of the season

  35. matthew on July 27th, 2010 5:43 pm

Where’s Jesus Colome when you need him?

  36. spankystout on July 27th, 2010 5:44 pm

Well this has to bump RRS out of the rotation.

  37. Ichiroll on July 27th, 2010 5:45 pm

    Genius.

    Yup, still broken.

  41. matthew on July 27th, 2010 5:46 pm

So much for being able to trade a package of RRS and Lopez to the NYY for Montero.

I think it’s safe to say the Mariners might not make it to the playoffs this year.

  42. spankystout on July 27th, 2010 5:46 pm

Niehaus “They might run out of fireworks tonight.” haha

  43. Marinersmanjk on July 27th, 2010 5:46 pm

Well we could stop being pussies with our starters and run an old 4 rotation…

  44. Section337 on July 27th, 2010 5:49 pm

Why didn’t RRS pitch in the HR derby this year? He couldn’t been an “All-Star”.

  45. Swungonandbelted on July 27th, 2010 5:50 pm

Lopez.. you better have not tweaked that hammy to badly just before the trading deadline….

    Very nice Matthew

  50. SODOMOJO360 on July 27th, 2010 6:03 pm

6.75 ERA in 96 innings has to be the worst for a SP in the majors with that many innings

  51. dawsonct on July 27th, 2010 6:03 pm

It’s a crappy season for him, no doubt, but I have a hard time giving up on a big, young, innings-eating (well, last year), LHP all too quickly.
If RRS makes the adjustments he needs over time, he would be a good guy to have at the end of the rotation. If not, there is always someone in baseball who thinks they have the key. Besides, I don’t think he is even arbitration eligible, is he? It’s a fairly inexpensive gamble to keep him around and try to fix the problem(s).
It isn’t like you can go down to Baseball Depot and pick up a 6-pack of new talent, sometimes you need to trust your own abilities to develop the player.

  52. MrZDevotee on July 27th, 2010 6:04 pm

Wait, I thought “ArmsofJello” was playing on Fox right now– starring Ryan Roland-Smith.?

  53. spankystout on July 27th, 2010 6:06 pm

It may not be time to cut ties with RRS, but it is time to send him to AAA to figure things out. If he has any options left.

  54. MrZDevotee on July 27th, 2010 6:07 pm

I agree with Dawson… The fact that there was a row of scouts with speed guns watching RRS pitch today tells me there are folks out there who don’t believe the “suck” is a permanent thing.

I was actually shocked to see them, but if teams have scouts here looking at RRS then more than one team out there thinks he has upside and might be had for cheap BECAUSE of his crappy year.

    (He’s out of options, Spanky…)

  55. matthew on July 27th, 2010 6:09 pm

I suspect that Auburn VW guy in the convertible is addicted to crack.

  56. msfanmike on July 27th, 2010 6:10 pm

What … nobody has commented on the “poetic justice” associated with Jack Wilson filling the cleanup spot for the rest of the night.

If that isn’t poetic justice – there is no such thing. Cistuli must be doing cartwheels. There has got to be a story in there somewhere Carson.

  57. MrZDevotee on July 27th, 2010 6:10 pm

I wouldn’t mind flipping him with someone in the bullpen though… As a total “out there” idea, when’s the last time League started a game? If no one was on base, he’d have way more opportunities to throw “the hardest pitch to hit in baseball”.

  58. Marinersmanjk on July 27th, 2010 6:11 pm

But where they actually there to watch RRS? I’d doubt it. It’s basically been a shit storm this whole season. It’s not just today.

  59. spankystout on July 27th, 2010 6:11 pm

    Well there goes that idea….

  60. MrZDevotee on July 27th, 2010 6:12 pm

    MsFanMike–
Jack Wilson batting cleanup is proof of the existence of Randomness…

Although, couldn’t it be argued he’s an upgrade over Lopez at the 4 spot?

  61. heychuck01 on July 27th, 2010 6:12 pm

I was actually shocked to see them, but if teams have scouts here looking at RRS then more than one team out there thinks he has upside and might be had for cheap BECAUSE of his crappy year.

I am thinking the more likely scenario is that the scouts are seeing if he is worth picking up after he gets DFA’d.

  62. SODOMOJO360 on July 27th, 2010 6:13 pm

There are scouts at every game. Hyphen has had plenty of time to try to work out kinks this year, he just isn’t good. He is saved by Safeco with all of his fly ball outs but that hasn’t even helped him this year. It’s time to try someone new like Olson or Seddon.

  63. msfanmike on July 27th, 2010 6:14 pm

Seriously – if Wak comes out after the game and once again proclaims that “Really Really Shitty” (RRS) is going to remain in the rotation, doesn’t he pretty much have to be canned himself? He has to say something other than this – doesn’t he?

Something like, “we will evaluate his situation over the next couple of days – or as long as it takes to get Pineda from there to here … or to properly prepare Seddon to take his spot.” Something … anything other than what he is probably going to say!

Wak is a classy guy, so he isn’t going to throw anybody under the bus (that’s for us to do), but come on !!!

  64. Marinersmanjk on July 27th, 2010 6:14 pm

I think Seddon is the second coming of Cliff Lee.

  65. MrZDevotee on July 27th, 2010 6:16 pm

    MarinersMan-
All I know is they were clocking his pitches, and taking notes, in the early innings.

Why? I can’t tell you. But there they were.

(On a related note, it must be a sucky life right now to be a scout sent to watch Aardsmaa… You’ve got about a 15% of even seeing him pitch on any given night… pretty much a 0% chance tonight…)

  66. msfanmike on July 27th, 2010 6:16 pm

Jack Wilson batting cleanup is proof of the existence of Randomness…

    Good call … LOL!

  67. msfanmike on July 27th, 2010 6:19 pm

All I know is they were clocking his pitches, and taking notes, in the early innings.

This is what scouts do … all the time – regardless of who is pitching or where the game is being played. They watch and track whatever is in front of them. They probably put a clock on the time it takes the bus boy to replace the pan of potatoes at the buffet.

They clock pitch, location, speed … 150,000 times per year, write a report, submit it to the FO and drive to the next town. All day every day. It might be a fun life. Then again, maybe not so much.

  68. SODOMOJO360 on July 27th, 2010 6:24 pm

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. What’s worse, how bad they Hyphen is or the fact that I’m still watching?

  69. msfanmike on July 27th, 2010 6:25 pm

    Bet the over

  70. MrZDevotee on July 27th, 2010 6:25 pm

    MsFan…
That would make the most sense… I would look for a new career if I was being sent specifically to watch Hyphen pitch. Maybe coalminer, crab fisherman,or something fun like that…

(I think we can officially change Hyphen’s nickname to “Minus” at this point).

  71. msfanmike on July 27th, 2010 6:27 pm

I know the Mariners are in love with Mike Sweeney, but why is he pitching?

  78. Westside guy on July 27th, 2010 6:38 pm

Oh man, I couldn’t take it. I turned it off.

Figures Lopey would ground into a double play AND hurt himself. How many more ways can he continue to hurt the Mariners? He’s mixing it up, coming up with new ways to keep it fresh!

Oh well – goodnight folks. Have fun.

  79. matthew on July 27th, 2010 6:38 pm

I think I’ll go have a listen to that for the duration of this misery game.

  82. matthew on July 27th, 2010 6:44 pm

Sorry I’m drunk. 11 shots. Last time I ever play “take a drink when RRS gives up a run.”

  83. SODOMOJO360 on July 27th, 2010 6:47 pm

What happened to Smoaks BB/K ratio. He has 1 BB since becoming a Mariner vs. 38 as a Ranger

  84. matthew on July 27th, 2010 6:47 pm

Why are all Internet/cellphone plan commercials so painful to watch? There’s a special place in hell for those who create commercials for Broadstripe, Comcast and Qwest.

  85. msfanmike on July 27th, 2010 6:51 pm

Can I deduct the last hour and a half of watching the Mariners play?

Only if you properly amortize the additional expense associated with watching the replay of tonight’s game – which you will inevitably do. Come on, admit it … you will watch the replay.

  86. msfanmike on July 27th, 2010 6:54 pm

Hey, I looked it up. Loosely translated, the word “SMOAK” is an old Indian word that means, “please start me off with an 0-2 count.”

WTF is with him. Too much spit in his gloves?

Maybe we need a new hitting coach. Yeah, that should turn it around.

I presume with the Mariners affinity for overloading the 1B position and with Sweeney, Kotchman and maybe Branyan gone after this season (hope not, but it is a maybe) – the FO is in no hurry to trade Carp any time soon They might need him for “backup” if not “front up.”

  87. kozmo on July 27th, 2010 6:58 pm

Hope everyone has finally jumped off the RRS bandwagon. He was sure hyped before the season, without really backing it up (small sample size). He is a nice guy, but that’s not an excuse to let him off the hook, his play is garbage.

  88. msfanmike on July 27th, 2010 7:00 pm

Hope everyone has finally jumped off the RRS bandwagon

I don’t think you have anything to worry about. The wagon has been “jumped off” burned, flambayed, petrified, liquified and simonized … or so the saying goes.

  96. jephdood on July 27th, 2010 7:45 pm

What do you want to bet they do something stupid like put RRS in the bullpen.

  97. Seattleken on July 27th, 2010 8:01 pm

True in the last three years lefties have outhit righties vs RRS. He might done as major leaguer as I was thinking he could be a lefty in the pen but not if he can’t get lefties..
He was never a top prospect so he wont be getting many additional chances, probably just till 2011 spring training.

  98. IwearMsHats on July 27th, 2010 8:46 pm

According to the Rainiers box score today, Carp is no longer a first baseman, but a left fielder!!! :|

  99. Marinersmanjk on July 27th, 2010 8:55 pm

According to the Rainiers box score today, Carp is no longer a first baseman, but a left fielder!!!

Lol he does have the build of an outfielder.

  100. jefffrane on July 27th, 2010 9:45 pm

Huh. Just checked the box score. I’m sure that it could be more pathetic but I’m having some trouble imagining how.

  101. nvn8vbryce on July 27th, 2010 10:39 pm

I think that we need to get the pitching machine that starred alongside Ichiro to replace RRS… At least we wouldn’t have to pay per-diem.

  102. Breadbaker on July 27th, 2010 11:34 pm

Just to add insult to injury, did you see who made an emergency start for the Nats when Strasburg couldn’t get loose today?

  103. SonsofBuckyJacobsen on July 27th, 2010 11:40 pm

RRS is obviously done as a starter, but I think that after some time in Tacoma to generate some sort of confidence he could be a decent lefty in the pen. At least I would give that a try before giving up on him altogether.

As far as Lopez goes…he’s the most frustrating player the M’s have had since Bobby Ayala. He can’t even make it 5 more days ’til the trading deadline so we could get something for him. He’ll be out of baseball in a year or two. Until then, let him torture some other team’s fans (KC Royals perhaps?)!

  104. ctdawg on July 28th, 2010 5:40 am

I just saw this story. If Bonderman wants to pitch in Seattle for say 3-5 million bucks, is he worth bringing in? This story mentions retirement which is a little scary but he’ll only be 28 next season.

The last time I saw an asswhipping that bad on the South Side gangs were involved.

Just to add insult to injury, did you see who made an emergency start for the Nats when Strasburg couldn’t get loose today?

I liked Batista’s comment: “Imagine, if you go there to see Miss Universe, and you end up having Miss Iowa.”

Fill in your own punchline after RR-S’ outing yesterday.

If Bonderman wants to pitch in Seattle for say 3-5 million bucks, is he worth bringing in?

2007 was the last time Bonderman was better than average and able to stay healthy. This year, he’s better than his 5.06 ERA, but not wildly so – 4.46 xFIP. He looks like maybe a servicable back-of-the-rotation guy. I’m not sure I’d go $5M, but a lower contract with incentive clauses maybe. I like the idea of loading up on cheap fifth-starter types and betting on one or two coming through as nice suprises.

Those do happen sometimes, you know. Well, for some teams anyway.

Is RRS afraid to pitch inside or “let one get away” every now and then? The M’s could use a nice brawl — they’re playing like zombies.

Imagine if Lou was here… the rubber would be implanted somewhere and it would take Minus a week to get rid of it…

I just saw this story. If Bonderman wants to pitch in Seattle for say 3-5 million bucks, is he worth bringing in? This story mentions retirement which is a little scary but he’ll only be 28 next season.

Actually, it sounds as if – unlike most people – Bonderman has intelligently managed his money.

Most of us are living testaments to the fact that you don’t need millions a year to live a decent life. So if you’re one of the lucky few who will be paid several million dollars for even just one or two years, as long as you don’t try to live like a rich person you have no financial need to work after that.
