I like this, despite the skunk batting 6th.

  2. Chris_From_Bothell on August 5th, 2010 7:08 pm

    Kotchman batting 3rd. Sigh.

    Hurry up Mr. Smoak…

  3. Jasper_C on August 5th, 2010 7:11 pm

Sweeney to the Phillies for a PTNL or cash.

  4. SODOMOJO360 on August 5th, 2010 7:15 pm

Kotch has actually hit well lately and at least Lopez is where he belongs at 6th though I would like Saunders there.

  5. juneau_fan on August 5th, 2010 7:15 pm

I hate to say it, but Tui wouldn’t have made that catch that Lopez did.

  6. JerBear on August 5th, 2010 7:27 pm

Ugh… that was pathetic. Even Dave N was complaining about them playing for 1 run in the first…

  7. juneau_fan on August 5th, 2010 7:37 pm

Even Dave N was complaining about them playing for 1 run in the first…

And wasting an out in that pursuit.

I just tuned in, but my question is in the contrary, why the fuck wasn’t Kotchman doing the suicide bunt to bring Ichi home?

This lineup is not an “average” lineup. It’s one of the most inept lineups (asides of Ichiro and Branyan) in the recent history of MLB. That’s why I think those blindly applying WPA arguments are completely wrong.

In a close game, with a runner on third and one out or less, and the batter is anybody except Ichiro, Branyan (and maybe Guti), I want to see the suicide bunt to bring the run home, At least until opposing teams adjust. These batters (asides from Ichiro, Branyan, and maybe Guti) have shown over two thirds of a full season that they can’t fucking get the job done.

  9. joser on August 5th, 2010 7:51 pm

“Nelson Cruz, a man you could’ve gotten for nothing a couple of years ago, now on his way to being a superstar” — Dave N

And, Dave C. too… a couple of years ago. (The M’s did eventually sign onto the half-nelson plan, but picked the lesser half). And to be fair, it would’ve taken slightly more than “nothing.” But still.

  10. samregens on August 5th, 2010 7:51 pm

The batters you’re counting on to bring the runs home are not an average MLB lineup. They are: Figgins, Jack Wilson, Lopez, Moore, Saunders, Kotchman, Josh Wilson, Tui, etc. (man this lineup sucks).

One run is better than zero, and having to watch the no-talent guys who messed up hanging their heads down as they wander back to the bench after they GIDP, popout, strikeout, whatever, is no fun.

Especially with Felix on the mound, I want to see those fuckers bunt the run home in a close game (especially for the lead).

  11. Chris_From_Bothell on August 5th, 2010 8:11 pm

OOZ, UZR and RZR in a between-at-bats graphic during a game. Freaky.

  12. lalo on August 5th, 2010 8:23 pm

If the M´s lose today they will be 5 games ahead of Baltimore and two games ahead of Pittsburgh, Anthony Rendon could be a consolation price for this terrible season, he´s proyected better than Bryce Harper

  13. nvn8vbryce on August 5th, 2010 8:27 pm

If When the M´s lose today they will be 5 games ahead of Baltimore…

The way we’re playing it’s not a matter of if…

  14. GoldenGutz on August 5th, 2010 8:35 pm

Felix hasn’t been walking many batters lately, but unfourtanetly unless he has a a couple innings of multiple K’s then his K/9 will drop below 8.

  15. bookbook on August 5th, 2010 8:42 pm

Look out Wak, Rick Dempsey’s available…

  16. juneau_fan on August 5th, 2010 8:52 pm

    I hate Lopez.

  17. Swungonandbelted on August 5th, 2010 8:54 pm

This team couldn’t score in a whore-house with a pocket full of $100’s

  18. Carson on August 5th, 2010 9:01 pm

    Sigh. Poor Felix.

  19. henryv on August 5th, 2010 9:04 pm

This team isn’t worth watching. At this point I wouldn’t care if they didn’t finish the year, and just stayed home.

This isn’t just maddening, or frustrating, this is disgusting.

At this point we’re just waiting for some no-one pitcher to throw a perfect game or no hitter against us.

  20. lalo on August 5th, 2010 9:06 pm

I feel bad for Ichiro and Felix, this team is awful, they should be in playoffs, this team is depressing, except 3 or 4 players, the rest are material of AAA, AA, unemployed list and Baltiore O´s, no for a team of 90 millions budget…

  21. henryv on August 5th, 2010 9:09 pm

I have full confidence this team can chase down the Orioles.

Heck, we’re probably capable of losing 110. We’re one major injury away from that, I’d wager.

  22. henryv on August 5th, 2010 9:16 pm

Have the M’s come back from 3 runs to win after the 7th this year?

(4 prepositional phrases in 1 sentence!)

  23. samregens on August 5th, 2010 9:23 pm

Poor Felix. I can’t help feeling that the Rangers would have been hitting differently (or Felix pitching differently) if they had been down 2-0 instead of tied at 0-0.

Which would have been the case if freaking Casey Kotchman had bunted to bring Ichiro home, instead of sucking like usual.
And if that moron Lopez had bunted the runners to 2nd and 3rd, one out. Followed by a Moore suicide bunt.
That would be 2 runs there which is much better than the elusive (for the M’s at least: please realise this!) “big inning” that some people complain would be killed by the bunting.

Fuck the traditionalists who complain about bunting. Please realise already that this lineup outside of Ichiro, Branyan, and maybe Guti is composed of a bunch of clowns.
In the case of Figgins, Jack Wilson, Lopez, Moore, Saunders, Kotchman, Josh Wilson, Tui, etc. they are more productive bunting in scoring chances.

Especially with a guy like Felix on the mound who won’t easily give the opponents many runs.

  24. GoldenGutz on August 5th, 2010 9:25 pm

Felix has a K/9 of 7.85 now…Don’t know if it’s a good thing that his K’s are down but I know his walks are down.

  25. Swungonandbelted on August 5th, 2010 9:29 pm

Felix has a K/9 of 7.85 now…Don’t know if it’s a good thing that his K’s are down but I know his walks are down.

    He’s being more democratic….

  26. scott19 on August 5th, 2010 9:32 pm

How sad is it that you can’t even get in an upbeat mood for a Felix Day anymore ’cause you just know these schmedroes aren’t going to score any runs for him…

Oh, yes, but I forgot about the 25-hit-shutout greatness that is Tommy Hunter tonight…sigh.

  27. henryv on August 5th, 2010 9:34 pm

    Storm won.

Wonder if Lauren Jackson can play 3B.

  28. scott19 on August 5th, 2010 9:39 pm

The Storm are apparently the polar opposite of the Mariners these days…in that they never lose whereas the M’s never (seem to) win.

  29. lalo on August 5th, 2010 9:41 pm

Jamey Wright is preparing the grand slam…

  30. henryv on August 5th, 2010 9:46 pm

The Storm are apparently the polar opposite of the Mariners these days…in that they never lose whereas the M’s never (seem to) win.

They lost 2 in a row before tonight.

But, yeah, they’re good, for sure.

Funny thing is all of them put together don’t make as much per year as Chone Figgins makes per unearned arrogant comment made.

  31. henryv on August 5th, 2010 9:48 pm

Why are our catcher playing in lead shoes?

Maybe that could be part of the problem.

Best comment of the game… After Seddon throws a 2-1 pitch in the dirt down by 5.. “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?” from the one guy left in the crowd.

  32. henryv on August 5th, 2010 9:51 pm

Why is Seddon throwing so hard? Why is he pressing? He’s not even playing for a major league team. Now if he’s pitching for Eric Byrnes’ softball team, then I understanding pressing, but these games don’t matter like those do.

  33. Westside guy on August 5th, 2010 9:53 pm

Wonder if Lauren Jackson can play 3B.

Well, I’d much rather look at her than at Lopez, all things being equal.

  34. scott19 on August 5th, 2010 9:54 pm

Funny thing is all of them put together don’t make as much per year as Chone Figgins makes per unearned arrogant comment made.

Exactly — and what does that tell you about the state of primadonnas in professional sports these days?!

  35. joser on August 5th, 2010 9:54 pm

What’s funny is that I’ve been up in Canada, watching a lot of Jays games on TV, and while they’re also 4th in their division (despite being over .500 and winning 16 more games than the M’s so far) in most ways they’re the opposite of the M’s — HRs up the ying-yang, lots of high-scoring games, lots of exciting young talent. And yet their home games seem to draw fewer fans than show up at Safeco. For all the complaints about boring M’s baseball, and all the green seats you can see on TV, the fans haven’t deserted in quite the way they have in Toronto (or Oakland, or Cleveland).

Of course, there were some hopeful ticket buyers this spring that won’t be back next year. Unless the M’s start winning again, of course.

Wonder if Lauren Jackson can play 3B.

    Isn’t she on the DL?
Of course, that just means she can still hit better than Lopez.

The Storm are apparently the polar opposite of the Mariners these days…in that they never lose whereas the M’s never (seem to) win.

Yeah, but the couple of times they’ve lost it’s been to teams comprised entirely of girls.

    😉

  36. Swungonandbelted on August 5th, 2010 10:07 pm

God just put Lopez out of his misery and DFA him….

  37. joser on August 5th, 2010 10:13 pm

Why Washington bring Feliz into a non-save situation against a toothless offense?

  38. Paul L on August 5th, 2010 10:19 pm

We’re on track to lose a million games and we’re playing for one run.

    Unreal.

  39. jordan on August 5th, 2010 10:20 pm

There is only like 4 people I actually want on this roster next year. The rest, DFA them all.

Why Washington bring Feliz into a non-save situation against a toothless offense?

Because when you win every game by 5 or more, your closer never gets any work! The Rangers are going to win the world series, this team is crazy good.

  40. scott19 on August 5th, 2010 10:24 pm

For all the complaints about boring M’s baseball, and all the green seats you can see on TV, the fans haven’t deserted in quite the way they have in Toronto (or Oakland, or Cleveland).

    Joser —

Is it just me, or have the Jays become another of those teams which seem to get much better ratings on TV than their attendance might indicate? (Like, allegedly, the infamous Florida Marlins do — if Seth Everett’s reports on them have any accuracy, that is.) The reason I ask is because I know they have fans from coast-to-coast Up North and are on virtually every cable system across the country. Unfortunately, though, I fear the stupidity of having both the Yanks and Saux in that same division without the presence of extra wild card teams (as is the case in other major sports) has taken its toll on Jays over the years — even to the point of when they actually go out and play a competitive season hardly anybody shows up anymore because they know they’ll have to win over 100 games to get to the playoffs.

And for that happen to a franchise which once drew over 4 million fans several years in a row is a damned shame.

  41. Diehard on August 5th, 2010 11:09 pm

Just got back from the game and yeah tonight was a big dud. Gotta feel for Felix, he was pretty good and is now 7-9. Sucks to be him right now. The offense was so frustrating, so many guys left on base! UGHHHHH!

  42. jephdood on August 5th, 2010 11:50 pm

God dammit, Jack! Start DFA’ing some of these worthless pukes! How long do we have to watch these crap players that have NO future with this organization? What’s the f’ing point? NOBODY wants the turds that we have, so he can’t be “showcasing” anyone. This is so damn exasperating.

  43. spankystout on August 6th, 2010 12:33 am

If the Royals can muster up the courage to DFA Jose Guillen, the Royals HR, and RBI leader–Jack Z needs to do the same, and dump Jose Lopez. I detest the paperboy, and Tui is questionable, but both are better options than Lopez. Please, please, please?

  44. joser on August 6th, 2010 11:30 am

I suspect virtually the whole team is on waivers and Jack is just waiting to see if there are any suckers out there before he moves on to the next step.

Is it just me, or have the Jays become another of those teams which seem to get much better ratings on TV than their attendance might indicate? (Like, allegedly, the infamous Florida Marlins d

It’s possible, but it’s worth remembering the entire Canadian market is smaller than a major metro area in the US…especially for baseball: on the Canadian “SportsCenter” right now the Jays only get a little more highlight airtime than Toronto FC or other European soccer news, and all the baseball highlights as a whole take third place behind the CFL and, number one, off-season hockey news. I’m not kidding: most nights the lead story involves a reporter standing in an empty hockey arena talking about some trade or signing in the NHL, and there’s been much air-time spent angsting about the world Jr team. Next year’s World Jr Team. (Not to mention the story that involved a former NHL player signed as the new captain of the Victoria SalmonKings WHL team: the only highlight clips of his NHL career they showed was of him fighting. Seriously. There’s your “veteran leadership,” Mike Sweeney.)

But, yeah, the Jays are essentially the national baseball team and most of their TV audience has never seen them in person and probably never will. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Marlins also have a higher TV viewership relative to in-person fans, but that’s easy to do when your actual paid attendance is a few hundred for some games. (Though even that can be questionable, when they have been known to sell tickets for games already played). But the Marlins are a bit of a special case anyway, since their entire business plan (as conceived by evil genius Loria) involved driving away fans in order to plead penury (while turning a profit on the revenue-sharing) until they got the public to pony up for a new stadium (and they had to drag their fight on that until the time limit expired on forgiving the loans MLB gave him to buy the team in the first place). Suffice to say that a baseball team in south Florida could draw a lot of fans if it was actually run in a way designed to attract them.

And while it sucks for the Jays and O’s that they’re in the worst arms-race division in baseball, we used to say that about the Rays, too, right?

  45. scott19 on August 6th, 2010 3:43 pm

And while it sucks for the Jays and O’s that they’re in the worst arms-race division in baseball, we used to say that about the Rays, too, right?

Exactly (and, BTW, thanks for passing along the additional dirt on Satan, uh, Loria — I never tire of reading that stuff! :)).

I know what you mean about TSN’s SportsCentre, too. I’ve watched it a few times before while I’ve been up in Van-City on hockey weekends…they basically do all the intensely in-depth hockey coverage that ESPN does with college and pro football in the States (i.e. even all the peripheral gossip which has little to do with the actual games themselves)…though, ironically, I was pleasantly surprised that they give a rundown of the all the nightly scores from the junior leagues as well. (I say “pleasantly surprised” because half the time I can’t even find out how the T-Birds did that night/the next morning from our stupid local sports media around here even though they are a local team!)

And, yeah…that fiasco of a “game” last night got me so pissed I was actually looking at the Canucks home page to see how far off we are from their opening night. At least I can feel pretty confident about the ‘Nucks playing another good season — even if they do run into the Blackhawks again in the playoffs and get leveled by those guys for the third year in a row.
