It’s something fun to watch anyway.

I got to see him in Tacoma from the first row, and the cheese is pretty sweet.

I actually stopped watching football so I could watch him pitch. Makes you drool thinking about him being a starter. I know he was moved to the pen, but can he transition down the road like CJ Wilson did???

He is quite good…to say the least!

Felix seems to like him too, at least based on the dugout shots I saw late in today’s game.

    Sayonara Aardsma!

It would be really nice to have a door slammer like JJ and Kaz were for us. I think Felix would appreciate it too (maybe he won’t even be upset at getting pulled after the 8th).

That said, I’d like to boost League’s value by getting him some saves next year and giving him the “proven closer” label to give us the option of flipping him. Who knows, maybe he will remember his splitter was the most unhittable pitch in baseball next year and Cortes can work the 8th to get some experience in high leverage w/out closer’s pressure. Then we could even take Felix out after the 7th inning sometimes.

    Thank you, Dayton Moore!

That’s hot. Add the slider, and you have twice Aardsma’s repertoire.

    HOT.

I wouldn’t put Cortes down as our closer just yet (I still believe in letting him get his feet wet first), but man oh man seeing all these legit bullpen arms down there is really nice. I can’t wait until Sweeney, Wright, and Olson are gone for good.

I think a better way to put it would be like this:

    (Reid Brignac, LHB)
    Fastball, 95, called strike (0-1)
    Fastball, 95, swinging strike (0-2)
    Fastball, 97, ball (1-2)
    Fastball, 96, swinging strike (K)

    (Carlos Pena, LHB)
    Fastball, 98, ball (1-0)
    Slider, 84, called strike (1-1)
    Fastball, 96 ball (2-1)
    Fastball, 96, swinging strike (2-2)
    Fastball, 97, swinging strike (K)

    (Kelly Shoppach, RHB)
    Slider, 85, ball (1-0)
    Fastball, 97, foul (1-1)
    Fastball, 97, foul (1-2)
    Slider, 86, ball (2-2)
    Fastball, 97, foul (2-2)
    Fastball, 98, swinging strike (K)

That’s 15 pitches, 10 for strikes including 5 swinging strikes. Those swinging strikes combined with the control are what I’m excited about.

This is what the future Mariners bullpen will be looking like! Got to love it!

I’m just crossing my fingers that Geoff Baker doesn’t dig deeply into Cortes’ public urination conviction and find some more serious dirt that grabs headlines.

I’m crossing my fingers that Geoff Baker doesn’t write another column. Period.

  14. B13a on September 26th, 2010 5:54 pm

Geoff Baker already wrote an article on Cortes in February detailing his personal issues, but it was written to show how Cortes wanted to move on from them. It was a pretty positive article, so I doubt Baker will suddenly turn around and write crap about him now.

Let’s not sink down into the “blame the media” muck, again. I’d hope we’re better than Howard Lincoln.

Hope he doesn’t get cut for his off the field problems. Clearly, that is what the front office cares about.

Well unlike Lueke he’s pitching now, so it doesn’t appear that the front office cares as he didn’t commit a major offense.

    I like this plan.

Seems Justin Smoak broke the law in South Carolina when he was caught jaywalking near his elementary school. Geoff Baker should have the details soon.

Seriously, urinating in public? I was caught when I was 19 urinating outside the Brewers Spring Training complex in Chandler with a beer in hand. Officer simply said to throw the beer away when I was finished. My Lord, if you are young, like to have fun, and have a pair of balls, you do stupid acts such as this. In Liberal Seattle if you spit a sunflower seed on the ground you maybe subject to a protest by SCASS, citizens against sunflower seeds. Find something a little more interesting to write about, or go hug a tree.

Way to get political Justin, that’s productive.

I saw the Cortez meltdown during one of the rainiers’ playoff games at safeco. It can get ugly when guys who have seen cortez’s stuff sit dead red.

When the league has seen Cortez once or twice, he’ll need his command. Until then, hitters are going to flail like brignac did.

justinh don’t bring politics into this. it’s not only the left or the right that hates fun. stick to baseball please.
