Mariners Add Jose Flores In Rule 5

Dave · December 9, 2010 at 6:42 am · Filed Under Mariners

The Mariners used the second pick in the Rule 5 draft on relief pitcher Jose Flores out of Cleveland’s system. He was so highly thought of that John Manuel didn’t even write him up in his Baseball America Rule 5 preview. Ben Badler, also of BA, called it a “strange decision” on twitter a few minutes ago. Apparently, he has a decent fastball but no secondary stuff, and he’s only pitched in A-ball. He did have a nifty 51/7 K/BB ratio last year, but again, it’s A-ball.

We’ll see if the M’s find a spot for him at the end of spring training. I’d bet on no.

Bummer. I thought they might go with someone like Ryan Adams, or some other middle infielder with a bit of pop. What do we need another reliever prospect for?

They can run him out to the bullpen in spring training and see if he’s good enough to stick. If not they haven’t lost much. They must see something in him that they like.

He throws hard and he throws strikes. Sweet Lou would have liked him.

So he can only throw a good fastball. How different is that from Brandon Morrow when we first brought him up?

The thing about taking a reliever as a gamble like this…

If everything goes perfect, and you get lucky, and he turns into a major leaguer, you have a … relief pitcher.

I’d much rather take a gamble on a position player or a pitcher who projects to be a starter someday.

Josh Rodriguez And Brad Emaus were probably the only MI’s worth gambling on at overall #2, and the Pirates took Rodriguez at #1.

Ryan Adams just got his first taste of AA last season at age 23 and was eaten alive. Brutal glove, too. He is miles from the major leagues.

Am I correct in remembering that you have to put a Rule 5 prospect on the 25-man roster? It does seem unlikely that he will stick in that case.

Can you immediately trade someone you picked up in the rule 5 draft? If so, perhaps he’s part of a trade package.

I guess the question we should be asking ourselves is this: Why are the Mariners stockpiling guys named Jose Flores? They had 2, now they have 3. The 4th and final Jose Flores belongs to the Giants. Brian Sabean might as well wait by the phone:

    “Hello, Jack.”

“Hey Brian- wait, how did you know it was me?”

    “Looking for Joe Flower?”

“Yes. Now give him to me!” *thunder/lightning*

“Never! You and I both know what will happen if the 4 Joe Flowers are united as one!”

“Total roster annihilation! Mwuuaaaaah haaa haaaaaa!”

Sounds more like one of those guys that the Mariners will remove from the 25 man roster but trade some worthless piece to Cleveland to keep him.

How about we trade him back to the Tribe for Valbuena?

Depends on what Z has on Shapiro, perhaps we could get some chewing gum back as well?
