Cactus League Game 7, Indians at M’s

P Bedard

Bedard could be followed by Jamey Wright, Chris Seddon, Dan Cortes, and Manny Delcarmen on the mound today. I’d tune in early and then see what happens later with Cortes. Jack Wilson was a late scratch from the lineup because he was sick or something, which is better than the usual reasons he’s not in the lineup.

• Paxton signed yesterday, and I’ll probably talk about that more in the links dump on Monday, but two early and very important bits of info are that he’s been working out at Boras’ complex and that the Mariners view him as a starter.

• Yesterday, someone asked me when we might see Nick Franklin in the Mariners lineup during the Cactus League season and my immediate answer was “whenever we get to split squads.” Seems like an easy response, right? After all, we’ve already faced a D’Backs split squad, are facing an Indians one today, and from here out will be facing the Angels twice, the Cubs, and the Dodgers. We only have one split squad day in all of spring training. The Astros have six this April, as do the Diamondbacks. This all seems weird to me, but it’s more common than I thought as the Nats, Pirates, Rays, Twins, and Padres are all playing just one split squad day too. I’m sure the Padres were just copying us though.

• Mauricio Robles and Erik Bedard share a birthday. That day is today.

Ryan, but not Ackley (at least to start). With all the changes in ST games I haven’t been able to keep track — have we had an inning with the Ryan-Ackley combo in the field yet?

Also: I hope we don’t see Choo. Of all the dumb-ass trades-for-nothing that Bavasi made, that’s the one that may linger as the worst from a missed value perspective. (Well, then there’s the 2005 draft, but that’s another thing entirely.)

Wow Bedard K’d the side in the top of the first!

I hope his shoulder holds up all year. But I know this is pure optimism.

    Bedard through 2IP:
    4-K’s
    1-BB
    0-H
    0-R
    34 Pitches

I think I’m starting to love Bedard all over again

So from what I’m hearing, Olivo came up lame on the run that just scored and Baron has taken over. With all the pitchers in camp that we have, there are only five catchers, and a possibility that we could be seeing Moore + Bard/Gimenez at the moment. The funny thing is I don’t actually know who they would bring up from the minor league camp if they could. I think Jose Yepez is still around.

any data on what a ‘Eric Bedard return to form’ would look like in the win/loss column?

  7. Sports on a Schtick on March 5th, 2011 1:45 pm

No one is allowed to bust Olivo’s balls until they heal.

People have complained about the Mariners’ hitting with RISP so far this spring – law of averages appears to be catching up with them. I’m sure someone on the radio will mention “clutch” or “situational” hitting though.

I can’t let myself think about the M’s having a healthy Bedard all season – I just can’t. But boy, it’d be sweet – or so I’d think if I let myself think that way, which I won’t.

Olivo’s out with a strained left groin. No word on the severity yet.

  11. spankystout on March 5th, 2011 2:12 pm

    Dan Cortes really sucked today:
    1-IP
    2-H
    2-ER
    3-BB
    0-K

Steve Baron (in for Olivo) leads off the 6th with a lead-off double over the head of Zeke Carrera! A guy who looked lost in the northwest league, but he’s got a 2B and a homer so far this spring.

Twitter World says Olivo fell face-first on home plate. That doesn’t sound good for him–but very amusing mental picture for me.

    (Stating the obvious)

That injury could be bad news for a catcher – hopefully he’ll recover quickly.

Manny Delcarmen’s velo still not right at all. 88 to start off Adam Everett.
Hey, he gets one above 90 to Jack Hannahan!

  16. spankystout on March 5th, 2011 2:23 pm

Yeah I would be hating life if I was a Catcher with a pulled groin. Ugh, it hurts just thinking about it.

  17. spankystout on March 5th, 2011 2:24 pm

You mean to tell me that Bedard is throwing harder than Delcarmen? Wow, something is not right with this picture.

Olivo’s injury doesn’t sound good, he’s off for an MRI. Still, it could be worse. Philadelphia’s top prospect Domonic Brown suffered a broken hamate bone which may require surgery. This is the injury that nuked one of Doyle Snelling’s seasons. Houston lost one of its best (and only) prospects, C Jason Castro, to a busted knee.

The M’s don’t have much depth at C, but I was pessimistic about Olivo this year. Adam Moore, it’s time to be decent.

    C’mon Halman, swing that bat!

(Like he needs any encouragement) 😀

So I know Baron was not impressive last year (to say the least) – was it just him being young and new to all this, or was he so bad that people were wondering if he was likely to ever amount to anything?

I actually have some hope for him this coming season which isn’t entirely irrational. The scouting reports I’ve been reading seem to indicate correctable problems and we had a bunch of players who broke out last season after tweaking their swings. That’s assuming right off the bat (rimshot) that it was the coaching staff that was assisting in these breakouts, but I suppose crazier things have happened.

Ouch, that sucks that olivo got hurt. I am not a huge fan of Olivo but I was definitely ready for don stability at the C position.

    bedard again was encouraging, though.

Thank you, thank you! Jay’s here all week, two shows a night! Be sure to try the buffet!

I agree, but I still have hope for Adam Moore.

(The rest of this is aimed at Geoff Baker, not at jordan)

The M’s were “counting on [Olivo] big this year”? C’mon, based on what? Olivo’s been better than RoJo or Moore over the past two years, but that’s setting the bar awfully low – he’s not exactly the second coming of Pudge. His career OPS is 710, and he’s another RoJo when it comes to passed balls.

I do hope Olivo’s injury isn’t severe – I don’t like to see any player hurt. And certainly Moore will have to show significant improvement just to get to Olivo’s level. But let’s not kid ourselves about what we have in the guy.

First game I’d heard on the radio all spring. In the fall, I cried for Dave’s family and the incredible loss to the Mariner community. Hearing Rizzs and Sims today, I was crying just for me. This is going to be a tough spring and summer.
