Cactus League Game 23, M’s at Rockies

This game is being broadcast on Root Sports/FSN at 6:40 pm. Let us all bask in TV’s warm glowing warming glow.

2B Jack Wilson
1B Kennedy
LF Tui
DH Cust
RF Mike Wilson
SS Ryan
CF Langerhans
3B Josh Wilson
C Bard

P French

All of our Wilsons in one lineup! Oh, spring! What novelties you bring! If only we could get Dan Wilson behind the plate and Wilson Valdez at short…

Earlier in the day, the M’s made a number of roster moves, sending Dustin Ackley to Tacoma and Steve Baron, Sean Kazmar, Gabe Gross, and Fabio Castro to the minor league camp. You’ll notice that Ackley articles had been fewer and fewer in the past couple of weeks. That was the first sign. Baron will probably start out with a repeat tour of the Midwest League, at least initially, Castro will likely be in Tacoma, and Sean Kazmar or Luis Rodriguez, maybe even Josh Wilson, will be at shortstop for the Rainiers. Gross’ job security seems far less certain as you’re likely to have Halman, Peguero, and Mike Wilson down there at the very least, with a strong possibility of Saunders turning up as well.

    Love The Simpsons reference!

The following “urge to kill rising” comment fits this lineup well, I think.

  3. Jay Yencich on March 23rd, 2011 7:06 pm

Hey look everyone, it’s Jose Lopez.

  4. Carson on March 23rd, 2011 7:07 pm

The Rockies announcers are impressed with how Lopez can hit in all sorts of different situations.

I’m surprised FSN didn’t run the ’95 M’s/Yankees game after seeing this lineup. Their old “fail safe”… On the positive side, I do like that French is channeling what we had hoped Hyphen would become– including the trademark glasses… I wouldn’t mind a long relief lefty in the bullpen, since it appears there’s no room in the rotation at this point. Although i suppose he’ll more likely start in Tacoma, and keep stretched out as a rotation stop gap if/when Bedard buckles, or Pineda struggles, etc.

Langerhans has been amazing this spring.

  7. MyOhMy on March 23rd, 2011 7:10 pm

    French looks like RR-S

  8. Jay Yencich on March 23rd, 2011 7:12 pm

Nate Robertson was originally channeling the Hyphen look but then his elbow turned out to be a mess.

If Jack Wilson and Erik Bedard are as healthy as they look this spring, they could both be pleasant surprises… And at his lower weight, Jack has been swiping a lot of bases this spring as well. He looks like he’s running well, even though it scares the crap out of me anytime he runs at 100% (you can almost hear body parts popping, and pieces flying off)…

There’s one for the “why Mike Wilson isn’t ready”– with that bounce off the seats that should have been an easy play at 2nd.

Nine pro seasons, still bad at defense.

  12. Jay Yencich on March 23rd, 2011 7:27 pm

    Luke French just slipped up.

  13. lalo on March 23rd, 2011 7:27 pm

Jay, do you think the M´s should trade for Kevin Slowey?? What kind of package would be fair?

  14. MrZDevotee on March 23rd, 2011 7:30 pm

That was an awful Lefty-on-Lefty pitch there… Heart of the plate, belly high fastball. Why?

  16. MrZDevotee on March 23rd, 2011 7:44 pm

Next piece in the “Why Mike Wilson isn’t MLB ready” puzzle– can’t hit a curveball. From a lefty no less. Belt high, coming across the middle of the plate. Doesn’t even see it well enough to SWING, with 2 strikes.

  17. Carson on March 23rd, 2011 7:46 pm

Jose Lopez, hitting in another situation. Same result.

  18. MrZDevotee on March 23rd, 2011 7:48 pm

Carson- I don’t know, somehow it was so much more enjoyable watching Lopez bat in a different uniform.

  19. MrZDevotee on March 23rd, 2011 7:54 pm

I have to admit– I like Brendan Ryan. He’s a baller. Always hustles, always seems focused. Sort of a more athletic David Eckstein. If he can bounce back, he’ll be a nice guy to have around (basically, who we THOUGHT we were getting with Jack Wilson).

  20. Nicbp253 on March 23rd, 2011 8:07 pm

Brendon Ryan gonna be a great pick up. JJ Putz deal keeps getting better.

  21. lalo on March 23rd, 2011 8:13 pm

Thanks Bill Bavasi, Jeff Clement over Tulo…

  22. Jay Yencich on March 23rd, 2011 8:14 pm

It’s an hour and a half into the game and I just now noticed that Jason Giambi is not only playing baseball, but playing it for the Rockies.

Words can’t explain how much I want the M’s to swing a deal for Kevin Slowey.

I would normally get excited and check everyday to see if Slowey has been moved yet, just because MAYBE, just MAYBE we would make the move..

    it never happens that way.

  24. Nicbp253 on March 23rd, 2011 8:32 pm

Times are different in seattle. Jack will make a move. Mike Wilson no bueno!!!!

  25. Westside guy on March 23rd, 2011 8:32 pm

    Yeah! He’s not a Mariner!!

  26. Carson on March 23rd, 2011 8:34 pm

Same old Lopie. Except I enjoy it now.

Me too, but I think Jack will push hard for him because Pineda isn´t ready and Slowey could be our #3 starter right now…

    Felix
    Vargas
    Slowey
    Bedard
    Fister/Pineda

That rotation should be very good

  28. Westside guy on March 23rd, 2011 8:40 pm

Man I am ready for regular season baseball…

  29. Andrew34 on March 23rd, 2011 8:59 pm

The problem is with Slowey is that the Twins want late-inning bullpen pieces and we don’t have any to spare right now. With Aardsma on the DL and Cortes in AAA we couldn’t afford him.

  30. Westside guy on March 23rd, 2011 9:07 pm

Hey, I get to see Saunders “new swing”…

  31. Nicbp253 on March 23rd, 2011 9:19 pm

Looks good….he’ll be in seattle soon.

  32. jordan on March 23rd, 2011 9:26 pm

Yeah, when you plug in a decent 3 starter like Slowey, that allows you to let Pineda start in AAA. When/if Bedard gets hurt, then Pineda can come up if he is ready. If he isn’t ready, then it’s a good thing we didn’t count on him so early.

I wonder what it would take to get him.

  33. groundzero55 on March 23rd, 2011 9:47 pm

Slowet isn’t a decent 3 starter. Maybe on the Mariners he is. He isn’t even a number 5 on the Twins….and let’s face it, the Twins pitching isn’t all that intimidating after Liriano.

Sure, I’d like to trade for him, but more for purposes of keeping Pineda at AAA to season, not because I think Slowey would be more effective.

  34. Shawnuel on March 23rd, 2011 10:37 pm

I think that at Safeco, Slowey is a fine #3 in light of his flyball tendencies that are neutralized quite a bit in Seattle. Off the top of my head, I’m pretty sure that only Lee, Halladay and, maybe, Nolasco have a better K/BB rate the last 4 years or so (amongst starters). His Achilles heel has been injuries. A healthy Slowey is a pretty solid starter.

  35. Breadbaker on March 23rd, 2011 11:11 pm

This would have been the game for Ken Wilson to announce.

Careful with The Simpsons references, Jay. Dave won’t understand any of them……
