Cactus League Games 25/26, Split Squad Action

Jay Yencich · March 25, 2011 at 1:14 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

Today is the only split squad day we will be having. Treasure this moment.

Day Game Lineup:
2B Jack Wilson
SS Ryan
DH Cust
1B Smoak
CF Langerhans
3B L. Rodriguez
C Moore
LF “C. Jimenez” (I think they mean “Gimenez”)
RF Mike Wilson

P Laffey

The early game is on MLB Network right now. Cesar Jimenez (and not Chris Gimenez), Tom Wilhelmsen, and Chris Ray are available to pitch, along with minor leaguers Steve Richard, Robert Rohrbaugh, and Bobby LaFromboise, all kind of fringey guys who would either make an impression or not.

Jose Flores was returned to the Indians today. This was probably the least surprising move of the spring. The jump from the Midwest League to the MLB is a pretty substantial one. I guess my question would be why we picked him in the first place, but the team deemed it a gamble with some upside and little loss, so whatever.

The night game will be on FSN/Root Sports. It will feature the other half of our lineup (Olivo included?) with Erik Bedard on the mound. Some other guys you may have heard of will show up as well.

Edit: Look, here’s a lineup for that

RF Ichiro!
3B Figgins
LF Bradley
2B Kennedy
C Olivo
CF Saunders
1B Tui
SS Josh Wilson
DH Bard

P Bedard

Why, we’ve already scored two runs, bolstered in part by a Smoak double. Of course, he was batting lefty against a RHP…

Minor league backups for today might include Mario Martinez, Matt Cerione, Nate Tenbrink, Josh Fields, James McOwen, and Brandon Bantz.

Smoak did it again. Bizarre to note that these are his first two doubles of the Cactus League season.

  4. Jay Yencich on March 25th, 2011 2:43 pm

Denny Almonte and Kyle Seager in as subs.

Folks, Cesar Jimenez is still just awful.

I really hope Smoak is getting it going…

If the M’s season consists entirely of games against bad Cubs RH pitchers, he’s MVP!

The only real reason I hope Josh Bard makes the team is so we can have a battery of Bard and Bedard. I would love to hear Rizz say “Bedard pitches to Bard…” or “Bard and Bedard work well together.” Make it happen.

The sights of Sedona and Vegas? Get this crap off my TV and put on the damn game!

Yeah, I’m ready for opening day, why do you ask?

    Saunders swing looks nice.

Hmm, maybe my eyes are fooling me – but it seems to me the announcers were giving Kepler (Kapler?) lots of credit basically for recovering from some bad reads.

  12. juneau_fan on March 25th, 2011 8:26 pm

Isn’t that the Ancient Mariner of Baseball, Gabe Kapler? And of course they’re going to make excuses for him; they played with him.

  13. Westside guy on March 25th, 2011 8:29 pm

Whoa. Tui, please don’t hurt Olivo.

  14. Westside guy on March 25th, 2011 8:44 pm

Oh, yeah, Juneau – I used to love him in “Welcome Back Kotter”.

  15. Westside guy on March 25th, 2011 8:49 pm

Someone, please help me be realistic with my expectations regarding having Bedard in our rotation this year…

  16. juneau_fan on March 25th, 2011 9:08 pm

I going to miss Dave so much, I can see that already. This drivel is killing me.

  17. Westside guy on March 25th, 2011 9:27 pm

I’m in total agreement with you Juneau (on all counts).

I’m sure Rizz is a nice guy and all, and when he’s actually calling the game he’s fine (in my opinion anyway); but he just doesn’t know how to do the “small talk” part of the job.

Dave was interesting to listen to, even if he was talking about a sandwich.

  18. Westside guy on March 25th, 2011 9:36 pm

Ooh, I want to see Lueke in this game – I haven’t had the chance to watch him pitch yet.

  19. Breadbaker on March 25th, 2011 9:36 pm

Dave’s other talent was that he could drive drama by saying nothing. Rizzs has trouble keeping his mouth shut.

I saw Leuke pitch at Safeco for one of the Rainiers’ playoff games. His ball smokes.

Steve Baron looks like he’s 14.

  20. Slippery Elmer on March 25th, 2011 9:43 pm

    Lueke looks great. Aards-who?

  21. Westside guy on March 25th, 2011 9:48 pm

Seriously – Baron looks like a junior high kid. 😀

  22. Westside guy on March 25th, 2011 9:52 pm

Ha ha, when Baron walked out to fist-bump Leuke, he looked like one of the batboys wearing a “grown ups” uniform.

  23. Nicbp253 on March 25th, 2011 9:52 pm

M’s look good. Olivo solid, kennedy nice pick up, Bedard please stay healthy.

  24. MarioMangler on March 25th, 2011 11:22 pm

Baron signed autographs for my kids the other day after the White Sox game, and you are absolutely correct. When you are standing next to him he looks like he’s about 14 years old. He seems like a nice guy and all, but I couldn’t believe this guy was a professional baseball player.

  25. jordan on March 25th, 2011 11:53 pm

Man, I am having a hard time controlling my excitement about Bedard.

  26. Shawnuel on March 26th, 2011 7:19 am

Baron resembles Archie “Moonlight” Graham as contrasted with all the grizzled veterans in Kevin Costner’s “field”.
