Cactus League Game 27, M’s at Brewers

It’s Pineda’s turn in the rotation again, this time vs. the Brew Crew. If we get Pitch f/x, prepare to scrutinize the heck out of those at-bats vs. lefties. Or maybe you just want to sit there and listen to the game on the radio. That’s cool too, I guess.

2B Jack Wilson
SS Ryan
RF Langerhans
1B Smoak
CF Saunders
3B L. Rodriguez
LF Tui
C Gimenez
P Pineda

In most spring training seasons, the biggest cut from camp typically arrives the day after the team plays its last split squad game. Camp has been quiet, perhaps too quiet, today, and the only news is that OF Gabe Gross asked for and received his release. Dave and I have both been talking about how little room there is in the Tacoma outfield, so it only makes sense.

If you must know, the next game to be broadcast will be Sunday’s game on MLB Network, then we have an afternoon game on FSN/Root Sports on Tuesday and another one with them on Wednesday. After that, it gets real again.

No DH huh?? Would suck to see Pineda get hurt batting.

Yep. There have been rumblings about the possibility of him being the first pitcher to get an at-bat for a little while now, and neither of the lineups I saw posted listed a DH spot.

I hope that he’s also been taking hitting lessons from Felix.

Question….can a player choose to stay with a team, go to the minors and be drop from the 40 man roster without going through waivers????

  4. Jay Yencich on March 26th, 2011 12:40 pm

The rules regarding that are weird and complicated.

Players that are designated for assignment and removed from the 40-man roster do have to go through waivers based off a reverse of the win-loss records. It’s just part of the process no matter what. The additional stuff gets complicated.

A player can be designated for assignment to the minor leagues and removed from the 40-man only once without his permission. If it happens again, the player can either refuse and become a free agent or accept the assignment and become a free agent at the end of the season. Players who have three years of service time can refuse whether or not they were ever DFA’ed before and those with five years get money as per the terms of their contract.

Yeah looks like Cesar Jimenez won’t make the team. I remember him being pretty good, just coming of an injury. Still young, Lhp, throws in the 90s, would be nice to kept him.

Listening to the game on mlb.tv to the Brewer’s broadcast. (The play by play guy is good btw) The broadcaster is GUSHING about Pineda. And seems to think Pineda is under orders to not swing the bat.

Pineda might go the distance at this pace.

    5IP with just 33 pitches

    Thanks Tui.

I really wish I could watch this masterpiece.

    6IP, 40 pitches, 32 strikes.

Jay, do you see possibilities for Pineda to be the rookie of the year, who are the opponents in that department??

  11. Jay Yencich on March 26th, 2011 3:14 pm

I came in thinking that this was going to be another all right, but flawed start for Pineda, and wanted to pick apart any little issue that surfaced. There wasn’t anything to complain about, aside from the avoidance of Prince Fielder, which is more or less justified.

    Welcome aboard, Mr. Pineda.

Jay, do you see possibilities for Pineda to be the rookie of the year, who are the opponents in that department??

He’s going to get some pretty stiff competition from his fellow pitchers. Jeremy Hellickson for the Rays is one and Kyle Drabek for the Jays is another. Mike Moustakas for the Royals is probably the strongest hitter in the group, but his spring hasn’t been too impressive. It’s the top two that I’m worried about, I think.

possibilities for Pineda to be the rookie of the year

Not everyone is high on PINEDA.
This from BA’s ASK jIM (JIM CALLIS):

Chris (S.I.N.Y): Who makes the biggest impact in the big leagues this season. Gibson, Drabek, Pineda, Britton, McGee or Banuales?

Jim Callis: I think Gibson. Britton may be the best prepared to succeed right now, but he’s on a bad team. Banuelos is intriguing, but the Yankees are going to limit him to 140 or so innings, so he may not get a ton of big league starts.

    Hmm!

Question(s): Have the questions about Smoak’s defense been answered this spring? Seems like he’s been making some good plays and has shown some range. Did we all panic and accept that he wasn’t as good as expected when in reality the hype of his glove was legit?

  15. Jay Yencich on March 26th, 2011 4:04 pm

I think he has answered a number of questions about his glove. I don’t think I’ve heard him really bungle anything yet.

Brian Moran seems to have the yips in a bad way.

  16. groundzero55 on March 26th, 2011 4:19 pm

Safe to say Moran doesn’t make the cut?

  17. Jay Yencich on March 26th, 2011 4:23 pm

Safe to say Moran doesn’t make the cut?

He’s not even on my current version of the Future Forty!

(oh no, I’m talking about it, quick, escape!)

    Pineda IS ready!!!
