Game 27, Mariners at Red Sox

Jay Yencich · April 29, 2011 at 4:21 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

RF Ichiro!
3B Figgins
LF Bradley
C Olivo
1B Smoak
DH Cust
2B Kennedy
CF Saunders
SS Ryan

P Vargas

Jack Wilson is still out with that eye thing, which meants we get to see more of Adam Kennedy. Olivo remains in the four spot because if it ain’t broke and all.

The Mariners have won six of their last ten and in that span allowed thirty-four runs and scored fifty. The Red Sox have won seven of their last ten and allowed twenty-five and scored forty-five. One of these teams is regarded as an up-and-comer in the power rankings and fulfilling the promise that they opened the season on. The other is not looked on in the same way.

    What in the bunt, Ichiro?

  2. Westside guy on April 29th, 2011 6:55 pm

I get home from work, turn on the game…

The GOOD: We’re up 5-4, 2 guys on.

The BAD: While Dice-K is gone, yet ANOTHER glacially slow Red Sox pitcher of Asian descent is pitching.

The UGLY: Figgins is batting (and hit into a double play).

  3. msfanmike on April 29th, 2011 6:55 pm

Figgins hit that ball hard … and Boston simply had the defense placed in the right position.

I think I would have rather seen a bunt in this situation…

  5. msfanmike on April 29th, 2011 6:57 pm

Jamey Wright … not Chris Ray.

    Phew

  6. Westside guy on April 29th, 2011 6:59 pm

How on earth did Youk ever develop that batting style in the first place?

  7. nvn8vbryce on April 29th, 2011 7:00 pm

Jamey Wright … not Chris Ray.

    I guess I don’t need to do this now…

  8. StatBoy on April 29th, 2011 7:02 pm

Haha, I don’t know how to quote on here, but good one msfanmike.

  9. lalo on April 29th, 2011 7:02 pm

It was a strike, shut up Youk…

  10. msfanmike on April 29th, 2011 7:03 pm

    Alright, Wright!

  11. nvn8vbryce on April 29th, 2011 7:04 pm

It was a strike, shut up Youk…

I think he was thinking more than that after Ichiro’s catch…

  12. CarpCarter on April 29th, 2011 7:05 pm

    Am I watching this.

    Is this actually happening.

  13. Westside guy on April 29th, 2011 7:06 pm

Bradley, this guy hates black people!

    Olivo, prove me wrong again!

    Smoak… just be yourself!!

  14. msfanmike on April 29th, 2011 7:06 pm

    I guess I don’t need to do this now…

    Nice … that was good!

I was also thinking about who might be the most likely candidate to leave once Guti comes back. Chris Ray is probably a better choice to jettison than Cust (hard to believe I am saying that). My logic being that if you can keep a reliever out of a game for over a week, then you don’t need him or his 12th man pitching presence within the pen. Cust would be choice #1A … running a real close neck and neck with Ray, though.

After that weak grounder, I’m going to start calling him “Uncle Milty”.

After that weak grounder, I’m going to start calling him “Uncle Milty Wilty”.

    Fixed it for ya.

I wish I had something to say that hasn’t already been said a zillion times about Bradley. I guess his performance can speak for itself. He is bouncing while he is swinging and it’s hard to keep head on ball when doing that. He always does bounce a bit, but it is more pronounced and SHOULD be fairly easy to correct. Either that, or its part pf that nervous tick development process that Clouseau’s boss developed in the original Pink Panther movies before heading to the Bell Tower.

  18. MrZDevotee on April 29th, 2011 7:11 pm

    “Uncle Milty”– I like it.

Hey, are those hearing aids in his ears? Maybe THAT’s what those are… All his anger issues have really just been that he misheard what people were saying.

    That explains a LOT.

  19. msfanmike on April 29th, 2011 7:14 pm

Nice catch Guti … err Michael!

  20. lalo on April 29th, 2011 7:14 pm

    Saunders!!

  21. Westside guy on April 29th, 2011 7:16 pm

I’m assuming several of you are old enough to remember the real Uncle Milty – Milton Berle. Otherwise my comment could really go awry.

For the young-uns – I was comparing Bradley to a rather old Jewish comedian.

  22. lalo on April 29th, 2011 7:19 pm

    Mariners!!! Here we go .500!!

  23. nvn8vbryce on April 29th, 2011 7:19 pm

    Another win!

The Fangraphs is rather interesting as well…

  24. msfanmike on April 29th, 2011 7:19 pm

    Awesome!

Great game. Probably their best played game of the year. Got the lead, came back to regain the lead. A left handed, fly-ball pitcher in Fenway against a good Boston lineup.

Great to see it. It is making me tingle (Cust and Bradley hatred aside.

Our stud is pitching on Sunday. Tomorrow they can go out and relax and maybe steal one there too.

With League pitching I get so nervous, though, with RoJo behind the dish.

  26. Westside guy on April 29th, 2011 7:22 pm

nvn8vbryce, when I saw your link on the word “win”, at first I thought it might be a dictionary link for those of us who’ve forgotten, over the past couple of years, what the word meant. 😉

Oh yeah, I remember. He wore a dress – and people really thought it was funny. Bradley is hitting like a dude wearing a dress, so the parallel comparison did not escape my discerning eyes.

Man, I only made it 2 minutes before hating on Bradley again.

  28. MrZDevotee on April 29th, 2011 7:24 pm

What is a win worth again? I think Cust came close to earning his contract today. Credit where credit is due.

A game winning RBI for our DH. That’s the bottom line.

    And it’s about time.

    Thanks, JC.

You know Westy, League’s problems last year could have been more related to Rojo than any of us might have known. League’s ball obviously has a lot of movement on it with the way it pops out of gloves occasionally, but he looks a lot more comfortable and it might be related to who he is throwing the ball to.

Speaking of League … he has got to keep the closers job when Aardsma gets back, doesn’t he? Isn’t the plan to get Aardsma healthy and somewhat productive in order to showcase him for a trade, anyway? That was the offseason plan until he needed surgery

  30. FetalPuzishun on April 29th, 2011 7:27 pm

    Love it, great game.

Im trying not to get too optimistic but this is a game a bad team would have lost after going down 4-2 in Fenway.

  31. FetalPuzishun on April 29th, 2011 7:31 pm

Hey at least if Milton flames out for us, it won’t be because of his fiery temper for once.

That’s what I believed last year, actually. But I typed that as I watched Olivo pulling a RoJo, which he does too often for my tastes.

I think we have ourselves a 4-man bullpen (Laffy, Pauley, Wright, and League). Somehow it feels like that’s all we see, and it’s working!

  34. greentunic on April 29th, 2011 8:17 pm

Let’s all give Cust a break. He traditionally and consistenly…

    1. …has had a good eye and drawn walks
    2. …has strong center-oppo power
    3. …has induced many pitches from opposing pitchers, driving up their pitch counts.

These are relatively stable skills. I think they will come back. He’s not doing much better than Crawford and do you think Crawford will stay terrible? I know Crawford is better, but Cust has been as consistent as Crawford has the past few years.

  35. Diehard on April 29th, 2011 8:32 pm

I am loving this! An average offense with good pitching is making for a much more watchable team. I can’t wait for Ackley to come up this summer and make this offense even better!

I sure wish I could get some of whatever it is you have been ingesting. In what context has Cust been as consistent as Crawford for the past few years … showing up on time, cashing a check the day it is issued, being left handed?
